- piratearggghhh, on 04/30/2008, -8/+35Let's see, design a game that only a tiny percentage of the PCs out there can adequately play then complain about the low sales. Forget piracy, this is just a stupid business decision. Also, they need to think of a new setting instead of keep using tropical islands.
- quomen, on 04/30/2008, -7/+28This is bad for everyone. Multi-Platform = lower quality. 99.99% of the time.
- inactive, on 04/30/2008, -9/+28PC is superior, and it is the only gaming platform I will ever own.
- TommyTikal, on 04/30/2008, -3/+18My $800.00 build is by no means a super computer...and the graphics look much better than the PS3.
- BlackKnight6, on 04/30/2008, -3/+18All PC games are experiencing extremely low sales compared to console, so its not their game requiring powerful PCs. My dads Pentium D with a 7600GT plays at 1280x1024 all on low at 30-60+FPS on Vista with 2 GB of ram and the game still looks ok compared to others.
As for the tropical islands...its only their second game. Why don't we yell at Valve about the same old run down buildings with European-like architecture...
I am so tired of the Digg community saying PC devs are cop outs for blaming piracy yet all they do is promote bit torrent use for downloading games. - inactive, on 04/30/2008, -1/+12I seem to recall when the developers of Sins of a Solar Empire gave that interview about piracy not so long ago, they basically asked why developers still targetted their games only at hardcore gamers, willfully restricting themselves in the amount of units they would sell as only that hardcore would consider costly system upgrades just to play a game. I don't doubt that The Sims' low running requirements were a significant factor in that games' phenomenal adoption.
Not only that but Crysis further hobbled itself by becoming a DX10, Vista-only exclusive when only that same gaming hardcore will truly appreciate the differences in DX10 and DX9 (even then you'd probably have to point the differences out first). The slow, unenthusiastic adoption of Vista and the frustrations gamers had with it (driver support, frame-rate compared with DX9 etc) would obviously have played a part in Crysis' poor sales.
I don't doubt that piracy is a problem: there will always be people who feel they don't want to pay for whatever. But take all these points into consideration and you really have to wonder what Crytek expected...how sad, then, to see them placing the blame squarely at the feet of pirates and not assigning any blame on themselves for either their own questionable decisions or those of Microsoft. - Evocati, on 04/30/2008, -4/+15People probably pirate it because they spent all their money upgrading their computer in order to play it.
- MrMax182, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8you can attach your xbox 360 controller to your pc, and your HDTV too. by the way.
- Asianwaste, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8Good advice. I'll take it one step further and recommend that everyone BE awesome!
- latova, on 04/30/2008, -11/+17And another developer plays the piracy card.
- thebaron2, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7Who made the claim that the ratio of torrent downloads to lost sales is 1:1? I agree that isn't, but it's an odd claim to base your post on when the claim wasn't made.
Piracy will affect sales, that's just a fact. And developing exclusively for the PC will drastically shrink your available consumer market. Another simple fact. These two facts, in conjunction, make moving towards consoles a pretty easy decision. - SSCrow, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7If you have an HDTV you can hook a computer up to it and sit on your couch with some wireless mouse and Keyboards.
My roomate does that and has 5.1 surround sound hooked up to his computer. (so he can play Dota) - InsaneWookie, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6Adblock Plus
- bulgingbritches, on 04/30/2008, -2/+7I guess if you're only talking tech specs and control options, then "superior" may apply. When it comes to the experience, the console is "superior" for many people. It's nice making use of the HDTV many of us already have, couch comfort, and a fairly simple controller.
- lamiaconfitor, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6What idiots are digging this guy down? console nuts? seriously, he is right. cutting edge is PC. it is and always will be. it is called the theory of system constraints: any system that is bottle necked can be corrected. computer gamers will always upgrade before companies will. [period] FTW
- hybridcreation, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4So have you played it? Or are you basing your claim that "...the gameplay is pretty much *****"" on some possibly biased reviewer's opinion?
- Gizza, on 04/30/2008, -5/+9They always pull the piracy card. Maybe they should read a couple of their reviews. They all go something like "it looks pretty but requires a super computer to run and the gameplay is pretty much *****".
- frazw, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4yes and multiplatform from ubisoft is even worse
- SSCrow, on 04/30/2008, -1/+5Its too bad Crysis has such a bad rap. People seem to be underestimating the quality of games lately for no reason. Assassins Creed for example was great but no one seems to think so. As far as Crysis, It has so much freedom and is just a wonderful game.
And this whole "But can it run Crysis?" is retarded, people expect an average machine to be capable of 2048x1600 resolutions with extra high textures and Anti Aliasing. Thats just foolishness and you can't have those kinds of expectations. Crysis was designed to look good now and look especially good with new computers that are coming out. - Slade605, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Pfff, I put $3000 into my computer and crysis is a visual orgasm.
- SSCrow, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3I don't see how the physics could suck when its the exact same ***** physics engine that every game uses. Havok is awesome!
- negative3, on 04/30/2008, -5/+8I don't know why people are digging you down. Each bittorrent download does not translate into a lost sale. There is probably 1 lost sale for every 50 downloads. For example, I know of SOMEONE who downloaded the full game twice off two different torrents, and didn't even bother to install either one. But zomg that's 2 lost sales!
Everyone I know (that isn't playing WOW) is playing CS:S, Warcraft III, and other games that they have been playing for the last 4-5 years. And it's not just people I know, Battle.net and the CS:S servers stay awfully busy. These classics that people have formed habits with are the main obstacle of newer PC titles.
BTW - Crytek shouldn't have released a Crysis demo. All people wanted to do was see the engine run on their system. They got their fix from the demo, and then went back to CS:S (or BF2 or whatever). Very sad.
And the physics sucked. People aren't buying quadcores in order to have sucky physics.
BTW - Consoles don't seem to have the problem of everyone playing the same games for the last 4-5 years. However widespread internet use on consoles is new so we'll see what happens. - mirunit, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Or, because it is easy to do compared to a console. It is a problem for sure, the key to blocking PC piracy is base the game around online play (which requires a key). This is the model CSS/TF/BF2/WoW etc have used and been largely successful. With a console you need a bit more knowledge and effort in order to play backup games.
- jacenat, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4with crytek's lock-in to directX, the chances of linux or mac versions are slim to none.
they had quite some difficulty to get their openGL renderer in farcry to work properly, so i guess they just thought they could take the easy way and focus on directX. - dsmx, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3but not as good as it should of been
- PueSi, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4Same here, $760 machine, runs Crysis just fine
- hybridcreation, on 04/30/2008, -3/+6SWEET!!!! More piece of ***** console ports on the way. ***** AWESOME!!!!
Consoles are for amateurs. - dungbeetle, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3The reason PC gaming is failing is because no one can seem to make a game that doesn't suck game-wise and will play on computers with current hardware and they all seem to include intrusive, unremovable copy protection schemes anymore. Sins of the Solar Empire is a perfect example of a game done right. It's a game that anyone can play on almost any current computer. It's fun and not a lick of useless copy protection on it. We all have these mind blowing tech demos games that in the end were only designed to sell hardware.
- ruded0g, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Where do they get their piracy numbers from? They always blame piracy but never release the source of these so called facts?
I want to see piracy numbers vs units sold (break it up by country). I also want to see exactly how they get these piracy numbers, unless the RIAA is suppling them the info then it must be true........ - Balath, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Oh, good. That'll last for about a game. Then they won't release for PC anymore. At least the trend seems to be that consoles are becoming more like PCs. The piracy excuse isn't going to last much longer if that keeps up. As hard drives get bigger, internet gets faster, and console OS's become more comprehensive, piracy on those machines is going to become just as widespread.
- HolyChimp, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Ah, that's what 'Universal Acclaim' means these days...
http://metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/crysis - lamiaconfitor, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4same here, two years ago $800.00 + an 8800gts card. handled it like a madman. Waiting for Crysis 2
- Bender1001, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Ahem, except for Valve and Blizzard :D.
- ablacksunrise, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Should be more ashamed if you actually forked out money for some of the absolute garbage they've been rolling out. Shoddy console ports DO NOT get my money. Ever.
- JamieSI, on 04/30/2008, -3/+5I'd imagine that they'd downscale it for consoles, PC versions normally have better graphics.
- lacronicus, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4Ok, there was a link to the interview in there, so I was wrong on that, but reading the interview reveals that it was done some time ago, given that the SDK he mentioned has been released for some time now, and Cryengine2 has been shown on consoles behind closed doors. The fact remains, however, that if Crysis cannot run on consoles, Crysis 2 cannot run on consoles, and since Crytek plans to release crysis 2 within 2-3 years (http://kotaku.com/354571/crytek-talks-crysis-2-far ... which is well before when they'll have their engine ready for those consoles, they'll have to make Crysis 2 PC exclusive.
- aggies11, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Piracy or no Piracy, console games typically sell more then PC games simply because the console market is larger. Consoles are more accessible and so target a wider more "mainstream" audience. This means there is more money to be made. However "it's due to piracy" is a more palatable excuse for developers then "we want to make more money". But as long as the PC market is still large enough to make developing games profitable, there will be those that develop for it.
To be honest, Crytek's ties to EA made most people believe that console development was in their future anyhow. If Crytek doesn't compromise future development of their PC titles to support the console (eg. Epic and UE3) then nothing changes anyway. Crysis is awesome and more people should play it. - Yazilliclick, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3Yeah. It'd be nice if those interview these developers actually did some journalism and asked some follow up questions on these and delved a bit deeper. Good questions to ask, how exactly are they rating piracy and relating that to lost sales? What numbers did they expect? Were they realistic given the technical specs of the game they were releasing and the controversy between dx9 and dx10 version at the time of release?
- PueSi, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2I agree, the only game i bought recently was The Orange Box (for TF2), pirating PC games is too easy, you don't need to modify hardware, just apply a patch and you are done. I'm ashamed of myself, really.
- jp33miller, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3I'd have to agree with you, if you put "multiplatform from EA = lower quality 99.9% of the time"
- PueSi, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2The gameplay is very good the graphics are amazing, i having finished it so i can't comment on the history (i heard it's short and sucky) but the graphics are amazing!
- hybridcreation, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2A tad bitter, are we? If you needed to upgrade your computer every year (an all too common exaggeration that has almost lost whatever false meaning it might have once had) then you should have bought better hardware to begin with. Slapping a Band-Aid on a compound fracture doesn't really do all that much.
"If you think it was the greatest game of recent times then you are nothing but a graphics whore."
So I guess that super-engaging story, superb sound and ultra-cinematic presentation don't really exist, right? It was just a hallucination caused by the other-worldly graphics' effect on my cerebral cortex? - frazw, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2What the ***** are you talking about?? That's like saying a car is ***** because one user can't figure out how to turn on the lights.
- Heiminator, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2i was with you until the point where you called 60 fps overrated, have you ever trid to play quake 3 online with less than 120 fps?
i am console and pc gamer since the early nineties, both have their purpose, i love my pc for running games like c&c, wow, silent hunter (yeah, simulations like that CANT be done good on a console), and i love my xbox and gc for games like ninja gaiden, soul calibur and burnout
to each his own... - Kingoftherings, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Crysis runs on XP with DX9.
DX10 is Vista only, thats just how Microsoft wants to do it. - BlackKnight6, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Actually it looks like detailed BF2 that lets me pick up bad guys, punch them in the face, chop down trees with bullets or run them over with a tank, throw ***** at people, drive a vehicle through shacks, fight in "zero g" (alot cooler and challenging than I thought it would be), customize weapons on the fly, sprint into bad guys knocking them down and waiting for them to get to their feet only for me to sprint into them again. I could go on but you get all that fun stuff which isn't graphics oriented.
But my point was my dad's system (an old one of mine) is pretty ***** (its a 2.0ghz Pentium D btw, pretty slow) and a mainstream 2 generations old video card and he gets 30-60 fps+. He could still bump some things to medium! - quomen, on 04/30/2008, -3/+5In my case, I didn't buy nor pirate the game because my computer can't handle it... And it's pretty good too. Instead of making games that weren't meant to run on computers now, they should try to optimize their game so that it runs more efficiently on systems of today. If you need a super crazy (expensive) gaming rig to enjoy the biggest appeal of the game (the graphics), then most buyers aren't going to buy it. Never have I heard about Crysis' terrific game play and/or story line. Most games are needless memory hogs.
- Kingoftherings, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I never even owned HL2 until Orange Box.
- Hoov, on 04/30/2008, -3/+4Except the Half-Life games deliver.
- BearinG, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1with a controller i agree.. but you need a good setup for kb/mouse when on the couch.. I've done it but its not very comfortable.. some kind of platform on your legs or something would be useful
just like with steering wheels for example, you need to have a good setup or its sketchy to play -
