Future Crytek titles will be multi-platform, no PC Exclusive
strategyinformer.com — The PC Play magazine has released an English version of an interview it did with Cevat Yerli, president of the German Studio Crytek, which is well known for developing Crysis. In the interview they discuss the success and failures of Crysis, but more importantly the state of the PC gaming industry.

- lacronicus, on 04/30/2008, -7/+8Did anyone else notice that their source was Crysis online? While that in itself isn't particularly interesting, but what *is* interesting is that Crysis online's source is this article. In case you didn't catch it: *They're citing eachother*!
Given that this hasn't been reported on any of the other major Crytek following sites, and that Crytek and EA have said that Crysis has beaten their expectations in sales, I'm quite skeptical of the legitimacy of this article until someone can prove otherwise.- lacronicus, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4Ok, there was a link to the interview in there, so I was wrong on that, but reading the interview reveals that it was done some time ago, given that the SDK he mentioned has been released for some time now, and Cryengine2 has been shown on consoles behind closed doors. The fact remains, however, that if Crysis cannot run on consoles, Crysis 2 cannot run on consoles, and since Crytek plans to release crysis 2 within 2-3 years (http://kotaku.com/354571/crytek-talks-crysis-2-far ... which is well before when they'll have their engine ready for those consoles, they'll have to make Crysis 2 PC exclusive.
- JamieSI, on 04/30/2008, -3/+5I'd imagine that they'd downscale it for consoles, PC versions normally have better graphics.
- lamiaconfitor, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6What idiots are digging this guy down? console nuts? seriously, he is right. cutting edge is PC. it is and always will be. it is called the theory of system constraints: any system that is bottle necked can be corrected. computer gamers will always upgrade before companies will. [period] FTW
- thebaron2, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1How much more clearly does it have to be stated than:
"We are going to support PC, but not exclusive anymore."
He also says that similar games on the console sell 4-5 times more units; going console is a no-brainer as far as a sound business decision is concerned.

- Kingoftherings, on 04/30/2008, -7/+2I say its not legit, especially after seeing the second comment on the page. He seems to think Crytek has something to do with Far Cry 2, if the users are this misinformed the article probably isn't real. :P
- atgmac, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1And the same goes for Digg I see...
- lamiaconfitor, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1where does the engine come from?
- frazw, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2What the ***** are you talking about?? That's like saying a car is ***** because one user can't figure out how to turn on the lights.
- latova, on 04/30/2008, -11/+17And another developer plays the piracy card.
- negative3, on 04/30/2008, -5/+8I don't know why people are digging you down. Each bittorrent download does not translate into a lost sale. There is probably 1 lost sale for every 50 downloads. For example, I know of SOMEONE who downloaded the full game twice off two different torrents, and didn't even bother to install either one. But zomg that's 2 lost sales!
Everyone I know (that isn't playing WOW) is playing CS:S, Warcraft III, and other games that they have been playing for the last 4-5 years. And it's not just people I know, Battle.net and the CS:S servers stay awfully busy. These classics that people have formed habits with are the main obstacle of newer PC titles.
BTW - Crytek shouldn't have released a Crysis demo. All people wanted to do was see the engine run on their system. They got their fix from the demo, and then went back to CS:S (or BF2 or whatever). Very sad.
And the physics sucked. People aren't buying quadcores in order to have sucky physics.
BTW - Consoles don't seem to have the problem of everyone playing the same games for the last 4-5 years. However widespread internet use on consoles is new so we'll see what happens.- thebaron2, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7Who made the claim that the ratio of torrent downloads to lost sales is 1:1? I agree that isn't, but it's an odd claim to base your post on when the claim wasn't made.
Piracy will affect sales, that's just a fact. And developing exclusively for the PC will drastically shrink your available consumer market. Another simple fact. These two facts, in conjunction, make moving towards consoles a pretty easy decision. - SSCrow, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3I don't see how the physics could suck when its the exact same ***** physics engine that every game uses. Havok is awesome!
- thebaron2, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7Who made the claim that the ratio of torrent downloads to lost sales is 1:1? I agree that isn't, but it's an odd claim to base your post on when the claim wasn't made.
- Yazilliclick, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3Yeah. It'd be nice if those interview these developers actually did some journalism and asked some follow up questions on these and delved a bit deeper. Good questions to ask, how exactly are they rating piracy and relating that to lost sales? What numbers did they expect? Were they realistic given the technical specs of the game they were releasing and the controversy between dx9 and dx10 version at the time of release?
- aggies11, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Piracy or no Piracy, console games typically sell more then PC games simply because the console market is larger. Consoles are more accessible and so target a wider more "mainstream" audience. This means there is more money to be made. However "it's due to piracy" is a more palatable excuse for developers then "we want to make more money". But as long as the PC market is still large enough to make developing games profitable, there will be those that develop for it.
To be honest, Crytek's ties to EA made most people believe that console development was in their future anyhow. If Crytek doesn't compromise future development of their PC titles to support the console (eg. Epic and UE3) then nothing changes anyway. Crysis is awesome and more people should play it.- Kingoftherings, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Consoles sell better because there are three different consoles. If PCs market is only 1/4 of the total gaming market, that would be about average. ;)

- PueSi, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4Same here, $760 machine, runs Crysis just fine
- Asianwaste, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3Bought a $250 dollar barebones server with an Intel dual core. I threw in an Nvidia 8800 GT for another $299. $550, a bit cheaper than a PS3 when I bought the parts and a lot more use per dollar spent than a 360.
Can play any game with great performance. - lamiaconfitor, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4same here, two years ago $800.00 + an 8800gts card. handled it like a madman. Waiting for Crysis 2
- negative3, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1The problem with your comment is that more people upgraded their computers in order to play Crysis than actually bought Crysis.
- Asianwaste, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Actually yea I upgraded to my current rig for anticipation that Crysis would set the bar. I got the multiplayer beta and was so turned off on the game. I have yet to have bought it or play the single player. I hear I'm not missing much anyways. Oh well, I'm hoping the Cry engine 2 will reinvigorate the modding community much like how Quake 1 engine did.
- PueSi, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2The gameplay is very good the graphics are amazing, i having finished it so i can't comment on the history (i heard it's short and sucky) but the graphics are amazing!
- hybridcreation, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1I thought the story ruled. It's not just that, though...it's the cinematic nature in which it is presented. - Slade605, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Pfff, I put $3000 into my computer and crysis is a visual orgasm.
- Asianwaste, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1If you got $3000 to spare on a power system, then mark my words you'll be swapping parts in a year. Just cause you can. If not, then you'll be needing to swap something in about 2 or 3.
- hybridcreation, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1There is nothing to be learned...they intentionally built the game that way. Shocking, that people would want to witness the greatest visual achievement in gaming yet, I know.

- piratearggghhh, on 04/30/2008, -8/+35Let's see, design a game that only a tiny percentage of the PCs out there can adequately play then complain about the low sales. Forget piracy, this is just a stupid business decision. Also, they need to think of a new setting instead of keep using tropical islands.
- BlackKnight6, on 04/30/2008, -3/+18All PC games are experiencing extremely low sales compared to console, so its not their game requiring powerful PCs. My dads Pentium D with a 7600GT plays at 1280x1024 all on low at 30-60+FPS on Vista with 2 GB of ram and the game still looks ok compared to others.
As for the tropical islands...its only their second game. Why don't we yell at Valve about the same old run down buildings with European-like architecture...
I am so tired of the Digg community saying PC devs are cop outs for blaming piracy yet all they do is promote bit torrent use for downloading games.- lamiaconfitor, on 04/30/2008, -5/+2Bottleneck = vista

- BearinG, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2Yeah but that's the point .. when everything is on LOW.. fine, it "plays".. but then its just another game..
- BlackKnight6, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Actually it looks like detailed BF2 that lets me pick up bad guys, punch them in the face, chop down trees with bullets or run them over with a tank, throw ***** at people, drive a vehicle through shacks, fight in "zero g" (alot cooler and challenging than I thought it would be), customize weapons on the fly, sprint into bad guys knocking them down and waiting for them to get to their feet only for me to sprint into them again. I could go on but you get all that fun stuff which isn't graphics oriented.
But my point was my dad's system (an old one of mine) is pretty ***** (its a 2.0ghz Pentium D btw, pretty slow) and a mainstream 2 generations old video card and he gets 30-60 fps+. He could still bump some things to medium!

- quomen, on 04/30/2008, -3/+5In my case, I didn't buy nor pirate the game because my computer can't handle it... And it's pretty good too. Instead of making games that weren't meant to run on computers now, they should try to optimize their game so that it runs more efficiently on systems of today. If you need a super crazy (expensive) gaming rig to enjoy the biggest appeal of the game (the graphics), then most buyers aren't going to buy it. Never have I heard about Crysis' terrific game play and/or story line. Most games are needless memory hogs.
- kenok, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Haven't bought the game, played the demo.

- SSCrow, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7If you have an HDTV you can hook a computer up to it and sit on your couch with some wireless mouse and Keyboards.

- jacenat, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4with crytek's lock-in to directX, the chances of linux or mac versions are slim to none.
they had quite some difficulty to get their openGL renderer in farcry to work properly, so i guess they just thought they could take the easy way and focus on directX.- jayson040, on 04/30/2008, -1/+0What about DirectX emulation? Could that work?

- Evocati, on 04/30/2008, -4/+15People probably pirate it because they spent all their money upgrading their computer in order to play it.
- mirunit, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Or, because it is easy to do compared to a console. It is a problem for sure, the key to blocking PC piracy is base the game around online play (which requires a key). This is the model CSS/TF/BF2/WoW etc have used and been largely successful. With a console you need a bit more knowledge and effort in order to play backup games.
- PueSi, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2I agree, the only game i bought recently was The Orange Box (for TF2), pirating PC games is too easy, you don't need to modify hardware, just apply a patch and you are done. I'm ashamed of myself, really.
- ablacksunrise, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Should be more ashamed if you actually forked out money for some of the absolute garbage they've been rolling out. Shoddy console ports DO NOT get my money. Ever.
- mirunit, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Gears of War for PC was solid, San Andreas was good, even Viva Pinata was interesting. Not all ports are bad. I also really like Orange Box and BF2.
- ablacksunrise, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Should be more ashamed if you actually forked out money for some of the absolute garbage they've been rolling out. Shoddy console ports DO NOT get my money. Ever.
- catchneyez, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1That is exactly my mindset. I feel like after forking out $500 to Nvidia for a high end graphics card I am entitled to get something out of it. I wish I could buy all PC games released, but after dropping $2000 on a system that won't let me down after 1 year I just can't afford it. And I know those powered by Intel and Nvidia splash screens at the start of every game were not free. Surely those hardware companies are giving game developers a kickback.
- Gizza, on 04/30/2008, -5/+9They always pull the piracy card. Maybe they should read a couple of their reviews. They all go something like "it looks pretty but requires a super computer to run and the gameplay is pretty much *****".
- HolyChimp, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Ah, that's what 'Universal Acclaim' means these days...
http://metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/crysis - hybridcreation, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4So have you played it? Or are you basing your claim that "...the gameplay is pretty much *****"" on some possibly biased reviewer's opinion?
- HolyChimp, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Ah, that's what 'Universal Acclaim' means these days...
- Neorio, on 04/30/2008, -7/+1I bought Crysis and a new computer to play it on. I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority here. I tend to view my new computer purchase as a very expensive anti-piracy dongle for Crysis.
Fantastic game visually - but I only played through it once and don't intend to again. It just lacked replay value and the kind of depth you can get with other games.
A Playstation 3 with GTAIV offers more replay value than a new hulking PC with Crysis currently. Sorry to say, but that's how the market plays out. - Balath, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Oh, good. That'll last for about a game. Then they won't release for PC anymore. At least the trend seems to be that consoles are becoming more like PCs. The piracy excuse isn't going to last much longer if that keeps up. As hard drives get bigger, internet gets faster, and console OS's become more comprehensive, piracy on those machines is going to become just as widespread.
- Tyrghast, on 04/30/2008, -7/+7Since when is Crytek a big player in the industry? The create a game that doesn't deliver on it's hype, and is basically a glorified graphical toolkit. Don't fool yourselves, this isn't as "ZOMG REVOLUTION!" as it may seem.
And Far Cry was crap.- kenok, on 04/30/2008, -2/+1Anything with CRY in the game was crap.
- fLUx1337, on 04/30/2008, -3/+2I like console games because when the hardware is brought, its brought. (Of course consoles break, but touch wood, my 360 is STILL working fine.)
I really don't care about the best of the best graphics, I don't want crap (else I would get my PS2 out and buy all games on ebay dirt cheap), but I don't care if a game isn't crysis quality on ultra high. So I know ALL games I buy for my console before the next console (5yrs+?) will work, as intended and designed. No slowly lowering the quality on games or upgrading to keep up, it just works out of the box....my only reason to sticking to a console...- palehorse864, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3A lot, if not most pc games detect quality fo you. The reason you don't lower quality on the console is because the developers do it for you. If you want the bells and whistles when a cross platform games, you can't have them because they've been removed. Look at Doom 3 for the xbox. The pc version had high graphics while the xbox version was toned down to low-medium on release.
The computer you buy now will actually behave like a console. The graphics level you buy now will last for as long as you own it. You don't have to upgrade. You can just treat your pc like a console. Give it the graphics quality it can handle. Why does it matter if there is some ultra high option in the menu? If you're used to running consoles with their preset graphics, it shouldn't really matter unless you feel good looking at the slider set to ultra high.- bilbohicks, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1here here.

- mohsenxp, on 04/30/2008, -8/+7Crysis was overrated. If you think it was the greatest game of recent times then you are nothing but a graphics whore.
Great graphics do not come close to saving a game with OK gameplay. How many people have replayed Crysis? Does it really have the replay value all the reviews kept going on about? Point made.
I've been a PC gamer for a long time, the last console I owned was an N64.
I started to get tired of having to upgrade my PC once a year just to play first person shooters which were clones with updated graphics.
Then realising after FPS, the only games that were PC exclusives were strategy games, I swallowed my pride and bought a PS3. It cost just a little more than the graphics card I would have buyed on my yearly upgrade.
So far I have had more fun from it than any PC games I've played. I'm sorry to say but console gaming is definately the way forward these days. Developers know that too. If you love FPS and strategy, by all means stick to your over-priced PC. Stick to constantly upgrading your hardware. Constantly dealing with crashes. Stick to overclocking your already overclocked GPU to get that game to run at 95fps! Heck 60fps is sooo overrated! PC gamers have super-eyes don't you know?
I'm very glad they are stopping more PC exclusives. I love my PS3 and my high-end PC is now just an over-priced music player.
Viva la consoles!!- Heiminator, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2i was with you until the point where you called 60 fps overrated, have you ever trid to play quake 3 online with less than 120 fps?
i am console and pc gamer since the early nineties, both have their purpose, i love my pc for running games like c&c, wow, silent hunter (yeah, simulations like that CANT be done good on a console), and i love my xbox and gc for games like ninja gaiden, soul calibur and burnout
to each his own... - hybridcreation, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2A tad bitter, are we? If you needed to upgrade your computer every year (an all too common exaggeration that has almost lost whatever false meaning it might have once had) then you should have bought better hardware to begin with. Slapping a Band-Aid on a compound fracture doesn't really do all that much.
"If you think it was the greatest game of recent times then you are nothing but a graphics whore."
So I guess that super-engaging story, superb sound and ultra-cinematic presentation don't really exist, right? It was just a hallucination caused by the other-worldly graphics' effect on my cerebral cortex?

- GrantTLC, on 04/30/2008, -1/+12I seem to recall when the developers of Sins of a Solar Empire gave that interview about piracy not so long ago, they basically asked why developers still targetted their games only at hardcore gamers, willfully restricting themselves in the amount of units they would sell as only that hardcore would consider costly system upgrades just to play a game. I don't doubt that The Sims' low running requirements were a significant factor in that games' phenomenal adoption.
Not only that but Crysis further hobbled itself by becoming a DX10, Vista-only exclusive when only that same gaming hardcore will truly appreciate the differences in DX10 and DX9 (even then you'd probably have to point the differences out first). The slow, unenthusiastic adoption of Vista and the frustrations gamers had with it (driver support, frame-rate compared with DX9 etc) would obviously have played a part in Crysis' poor sales.
I don't doubt that piracy is a problem: there will always be people who feel they don't want to pay for whatever. But take all these points into consideration and you really have to wonder what Crytek expected...how sad, then, to see them placing the blame squarely at the feet of pirates and not assigning any blame on themselves for either their own questionable decisions or those of Microsoft.- Kingoftherings, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Crysis runs on XP with DX9.
DX10 is Vista only, thats just how Microsoft wants to do it.
- Kingoftherings, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Crysis runs on XP with DX9.
- t4m5t3r, on 04/30/2008, -5/+2its unreal, the world nowadays is just *****, realy, WE KNOW ITS NOT PIRACY, if i know, he sure as hell knows it, its the big ass cheques coming from sony and MS thats it. Also why do people think its easir to prate PC games? this is JUST RETARDED , ITS NOT ABOUT THAT, mabey its because the got caught trying to con people into buying vista AGAIN, (remember all those awseom DX10 effects, YOU COULD ENABLE AND USE ON XP AND DX9, and it ran better because its XP)
Now heres a little bit of info for you, since we are only told what to think, they will keep repeating this "piracy is killing PC gaming" until people beleive it, (same as with, WMD'S, Iram, being evil, and all the other *****, you repeat the same ***** enough times people will beleive you,)
To pirate a console game, you need, a chip, job done, after that download the image, burn to disk, you now have one console game, thats it, FAR EASIER, to copy a PC game you download the image, burn the disc (if you can, sometimes too big) or install via image, then you have to install the crack, to so this you would (in most case's but games can be different, some more complicated) you copy the cracked file into the games main directory and over write the original,
Now about 70% of pc users would look atr those and say "whats the main directory", or most wouldnt even know where to get the crack, This is about taking away your freedom to CHOSE, the PC gives you this freedom, with the PC your able to download games and test them, this way when you dicover the games BROKEN (as almost ALL of them are nowadays) then you havent waisted £40 of your cahs and then have to wait 5 weeks for them to fix it, on console, you have no freedom, you play what they allow you, and thats that, no little company can get off the ground, becasuse they cant afford the money that ms and sony want, again, this is just who business is done nowadays, kill ALL the competiion, and you become the best because theres no one competing with you!!
Consoles hold back the gaming industry always have, with their crippled CPU (called "in-line" processing, they crippled the CPU so it cant do things like, control advanced AI, but it can make water look SHINY) these systems would be laughed at if they where PC's because theres MOBILE PHONES with about the same "horse power" they may stop releasing games for the PC, but they wont stop making them, WHY? because there can BE NO INNOVATION on an OLD PC (thats all a console is), and their just not capacle of anything special, because of the in line CPU, this generation of consoles are THE EXACT same as the last, just SHINIER!!- HolyChimp, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1If people can find the image to download I'm sure they can find the crack.
- carlvjack, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0Piracy is not killing PC gaming even though the number of torrents outnumber sales. Its just that people are buying console games and stealing the PC ones. Hell look at console game sales, if piracy is not hurting PC game sales then WHY are so many torrents being seeded and downloaded.
- myshl0ng, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3Once again, potentially awesome looking PC games will be limited cause of the consoles` hardware.
- ruded0g, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Where do they get their piracy numbers from? They always blame piracy but never release the source of these so called facts?
I want to see piracy numbers vs units sold (break it up by country). I also want to see exactly how they get these piracy numbers, unless the RIAA is suppling them the info then it must be true........ - ortucis, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3Ha ha, I was reading the description and went from "yeah yeah, they already said that before crysis was out' to lolling really really loud when I read "..but more importantly the state of the PC gaming industry."
Is this a new fad (started by Epic) with most incompetent game developers out there to suddenly go out discussing the 'state' of PC gaming after their ***** games (UT3, GOW, Crysis) fail to either run or just be fun for 90% of the PC gamers out there?
Also, I must say that even though multi-platform games means ***** games for PC gamers, id Software is the only company which I think can pull it off with Rage. Others can shove Unreal 'ED' up their asses for all I care. Stick to Indie scene meanwhile and don't waste money upgrading PC until Rage is out. - hybridcreation, on 04/30/2008, -3/+6SWEET!!!! More piece of ***** console ports on the way. ***** AWESOME!!!!
Consoles are for amateurs.- carlvjack, on 04/30/2008, -3/+0and being a "pro" brings you what status in your metaverse?
- wafflesomd, on 04/30/2008, -3/+1Just an excuse for a mediocre game. Maybe developers will figure out that poor sales might be the result of a bad game.
- Trixrox, on 04/30/2008, -3/+1Is there anyplace we can contact crysis to tell them they are idiots? Citing piracy for poor sales is so lame. People *will* buy a good game if they like it and has good value.
- carlvjack, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0I doubt it, back in the in the early 90s when the only way to get a pirated game was at a local computer show, if I wanted a game I found a way to buy it either by saving up or working some overtim. If not I waited until it was in the bargain bin. Now if you only have enough money for 1 game you bought it and steal the others. I know several younger people with more disposable income than I had at their age and think torrents are a virtual shopping mall of goods you can steal.
- Trixrox, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1They ain't playing online...

- SSCrow, on 04/30/2008, -1/+5Its too bad Crysis has such a bad rap. People seem to be underestimating the quality of games lately for no reason. Assassins Creed for example was great but no one seems to think so. As far as Crysis, It has so much freedom and is just a wonderful game.
And this whole "But can it run Crysis?" is retarded, people expect an average machine to be capable of 2048x1600 resolutions with extra high textures and Anti Aliasing. Thats just foolishness and you can't have those kinds of expectations. Crysis was designed to look good now and look especially good with new computers that are coming out. - TwoLOUD, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1PC games are easy to get...hence why sales arent doing good. Plus they make the requirements insane on some games...half the people dont even have a computer to run most of the 'new' games...you think most are going to spend money on a $500 vid card to play a game..I think not.
Consoles will always win the market, just makes more sense for the current time and age. Im a PC gamer but this is getting lame how demanding the pc games must be.- Kingoftherings, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1But they'll spend $500 on a console to play a game?
- dungbeetle, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3The reason PC gaming is failing is because no one can seem to make a game that doesn't suck game-wise and will play on computers with current hardware and they all seem to include intrusive, unremovable copy protection schemes anymore. Sins of the Solar Empire is a perfect example of a game done right. It's a game that anyone can play on almost any current computer. It's fun and not a lick of useless copy protection on it. We all have these mind blowing tech demos games that in the end were only designed to sell hardware.
- Bender1001, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Ahem, except for Valve and Blizzard :D.
- kingUssop, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Well, *****. Whether you like their hw-pushing ways or not, they were the only one committed enough to try it. Guess the industry is just too unstable, and PC games are going to be relegated to low end caterers.
- brutalsponge, on 04/30/2008, -1/+0They cite piracy, but the true reason is because - in all honesty - Crysis was an average first-person shooter and glorified tech demo.
And as for it costing a lot to be able to run it? That might have been true on release, but it's complete and utter ***** now. You can pick up an 8800 GT/S for dirt cheap.
Perhaps if developers stopped producing half-assed ports of subpar console games then people would actually buy games. Hell, I know I buy games for the PC still. - arcooke, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3I've got no sympathy for game companies losing sales to piracy. The reason for this is that games are just too damn expensive. $40-60 is a lot of money for most people, especially the most common gamers (young, still in high school/college, working a mediocre job). I guarantee if they halved the price, they'd double the sales. I have no problem spending $20 or $30 on a video game.. I waited for HL2 to drop to that price before I bought it.
- Kingoftherings, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I never even owned HL2 until Orange Box.
- frostbytemike, on 04/30/2008, -1/+0I find it funny that pc games are generally cheaper than their console counterparts. I found a pc copy of call of duty4 at bestbuy and it was like 40 dollars and in the 360 shelf it was 60 dollars. The pc version allows free downloadable content and has more options than the 360 version. I feel sorry console gamers have to pay for overpriced games. The pc game market has never really reached the common 60 dollar per game that plagues the 360 and PS3, but atleast the wii still sell games at 50 bucks..
- LMN8R, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2Crytek going multiplatform is no different from how the vast majority of developers are multiplatform these days. Did Crysis make EA/Crytek a profit? After going platinum and exceeding expectations, probably. But could they make even more money? For sure.
Most games aren't a Halo 3, millions of copies on a single platform, or even a Call of Duty or GTA, selling millions of copies across multiple platforms. Even Vegas 2 at 2 million across both platforms in a short time is quite the accomplishment. A PC exclusive doing a million in a couple months? No less impressive than those console sales numbers.
But just like most developers going multiplatform, they want more. The PC isn't "dying" due to this news any more than the 360 is "dying" because the PS3 is getting so many of its titles.
Also, the argument that "no one can run it" is just as stupid today as it's always been. There are millions upon millions of graphics cards out there capable of running the game on high settings. Millions more at medium. Just because you don't have the computer or no one you know has the computer doesn't mean very few people have it. - manav08, on 05/02/2008, -0/+0Hey, are you a hard core gamer? check out the coolest International gaming tournament off all times – VIXTURE!
