- Slashered, on 08/12/2008, -1/+197I'm one of the commentators on this video and I'd like to point out a few things about the video and the game in general.
For the video, simple items are turned on for all ammo, health and weapons, which is why you see square icons instead of the actual models. Most professional players use simple items on because they don't care about such nuances, and I forgot to turn them off to make it look prettier, so my bad. We could have maxed the settings also which would have made it look a bit nicer. Those of you who think the graphics 'look like Nintendo 64' or focus on it at all are probably the same who would say the same thing about Counter-Strike 1.6 and StarCraft, therefore missing the point entirely.
The game (www.QuakeLive.com) is coming along quite nicely and has greatly exceeded my expectations. This will not just be Quake 3 for free, but will have an entire development team behind it. The second map shown in the video is a new duel map created specifically for Quake Live, which took months to create from scratch. The graphics and lighting have all been improved from the original, and several features from mods like CPMA have been added including the addition of brightskins on players. Not only has the look of the game changed, but the gameplay itself has been (and continues) to be heavily modified. The railgun no longer does 100 damage and now does 80, and the lightning gun's damage has been decreased slightly. Rockets now have a larger splash damage and may actually travel faster than before (not sure about this). Precision mice and other equipment, along with a highly increased skill curve over the past decade, have made hitscan guns (those that hit you instantly) too overpowered. Id software have taken these things into account and are changing the gameplay to fit the current needs of the gamers. Personally I've always felt rockets should dictate Quake's gameplay to begin with, so I can't really complain.
Later in the day after Carmack gave his keynote speech, he came over to the tournament area to watch a couple of the games. No one seemed to notice so I went over to have a chat with him, and boy was I impressed. He's definitely a no-***** kinda guy that can take some heat, dish it back out, and also listen to the concerns of everyday gamers. Besides listening to my thoughts (and actually agreeing with me at times) on Raven's inept failure with Quake 4 and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars' par performance in general, he gives a very positive look on Quake Live. He says that matchmaking should be implemented soon, which will have advanced algorithms on matching up players with each other so that newbies don't end up joining a server with players who have been going at it for 9 years and lose 80 to -2. Modes like CTF, TDM, Clan Arena and Instagib will have priority focus instead of creating dozens of modes that no one will play. There will be more stats and numbers then ever before. Carmack joked and said that they have enough info to be able to find out 'how many times you died with the flag within a 20 ft in-game radius of the quad'. Wins/losses, frags/deaths, accuracies, captures, defense career stats will be amazing, on top of all the new stat categories we could come up with. Batting averages and RBI stats come to Quake.
I will have a much more extended interview with one of id software's top men, Marty Stratton, regarding several of the issues I noted and many more that I haven't. As someone who's been part of the Quake community for a long time and seeing the community develop all the mods for the past decade, I think id finally have a good grasp of what they need to do to succeed and what they need not to do to piss everyone off - see Raven Software.
Here's footage of the other games from the tournament. The finals video between the 17-year old Belarussian Cypher and the American ZeRo4 -is- online, but we captured it without brightskins and is being recaptured/reuploaded and will be done by today. The CTF upper bracket finals (three overtime games!!) and grand finals are also being done by today.

- Slashered, on 08/12/2008, -0/+34You guys are really weird.
We only had one reach-around. - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -4/+36sounds steamy...
- SolInvictus, on 08/12/2008, -0/+30This really brings back old memories.
- Murrabbit, on 08/12/2008, -10/+37I uh, actually didn't know this Franchise was still going.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 08/12/2008, -11/+34"We're seeing some great Quake 3 uhh... Quake Live being played right now!"
I like how they're talking about Stamina, Mental Game and Potential, just as if it was a sports competition. - supermanly, on 08/12/2008, -0/+19It's free and based on Quake 3.
Why the ***** are you complaining?
I can say it's pretty fun to play since I'm in the beta. - mlvassallo, on 08/12/2008, -2/+19So did Slasher get a room or did you have to host?
- Evi1d33d, on 08/12/2008, -0/+17Server got gibbed.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -2/+18@Slashered
stopped playing Quake in the Pentium 2 days, but after that comment, I have new respect for it dude. Thanks for giving us the 411, and Quake On! (sorry that sounded lame) - 9mmCensor, on 08/12/2008, -1/+17Thanks for the great coverage slasher, it was sweet to hook up with you at QuakeCon.
- cdrz, on 08/12/2008, -0/+15Looking good.
- jasonbrad, on 08/12/2008, -1/+15i loved that game. those guys are really good though. they predict where the other will be and shoot....
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -0/+14Digg effect > BFG?
- T00LB0X, on 08/12/2008, -0/+12Will there be any ability to make mods for quakelive? I remember 90% of the fun of owning a copy of quake3 is that you were a Google search and a download away from making it into an entirely different game with new challenges.
If not...then i'm still excited to give it a shot. (I just hope they have kept the same physics that allow vertical and horizontal overbounces...any word on that?) - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -1/+13This is only my opinion, don't get me wrong I liked and played Quake 3 a lot but I think the best multiplayer action was in Quake1 (quakeworld), the weapons had a better feel, rocketjumping was faster, portals are less annoying than jump pads, the action was faster, and way better maps (DM2 - DM6).
I still play it once in a while with a few friends, for old times sake, because even with all the Quake and UT sequels that came after, no one provided as much fun as the first Quake.
I hope Quake Live brings that back.
Or maybe I'm just getting old. - Jadael, on 08/12/2008, -0/+12It... WAS a competition.
- puttly, on 08/12/2008, -0/+12that duel was for $10 000 ...
- louiebaur, on 08/12/2008, -4/+16nice!
- cwpeck, on 08/12/2008, -0/+11painfully slow loading =/
- damndj, on 08/12/2008, -0/+11That's how you win.
- Atomic1fire, on 08/12/2008, -0/+11Dont forget reaction time and hand eye cordination
- Slashered, on 08/12/2008, -0/+11The video CAN be watched in HD. As the description says, click the 'Watch in High Definition' link on the bottom right of the video for HD footage.
- inactive, on 08/12/2008, -3/+13Show some respect, will ya? This is Quake-*****-3 we're talking about here. It's a goddamn legend.
- happytedium, on 08/12/2008, -0/+10I'm in the QL beta but unfortunately there are no Australian servers yet. Still, I've played around with bots and I was glad to see that you can still customize pretty much everything just as you can in Q3, and I was really surprised at how well the browser integration works. It's not like playing a flash game or anything ridiculous like that, it's really smooth and going full screen, you can't tell it apart from a normal launched .exe game.
Just wait 'til you see Cypher play this game (he won QuakeCon; undefeated once again as far as I understand). Absolute beast :) - tsquez, on 08/12/2008, -0/+10Oh yeah this is gonna be good
- etherreal, on 08/12/2008, -0/+9Still on AOL dial-up, are we?
- captmorgan555, on 08/12/2008, -0/+9Mirror anyone?
- jnisme, on 08/12/2008, -0/+8I still actively play the Q3 mod Urban Terror (also available as stand-alone for free). www.urbanterror.net Lots of fun. 30+ CTF highly recommended!
- IronPwnage, on 08/12/2008, -0/+8Big ***** Gun
- pjisback, on 08/12/2008, -0/+8Quake has never been about the sci-fi atmosphere. It's about fast paced gun-play and twitch movement. If you have time to stop and admire the scenery in a quake match you're probably in multiple pieces all over the floor.
- DaemonNivas, on 08/12/2008, -0/+8Hahaha, we destroyed Quakeunity site =)
- thePTS, on 08/12/2008, -0/+7I'm one of many who read your comment and don't know why the hell you posted it. Thanks.
- aydoubleyou, on 08/12/2008, -0/+7Finally, redemption for the Quake series.
I wish more people understood how perfect of a game Quake really is... there is nothing that makes me happier than shooting a rocket in someone's face. - supermanly, on 08/12/2008, -0/+7It's based on Quake 3 fyi and it's going to be free to play.
- DyceFreak, on 08/12/2008, -1/+8video streams are down
BOOOOOO! - Krodren, on 08/12/2008, -0/+7We've played several different games at work, but we keep coming back to Quake 3. I just realized the other day that I've been playing with basically the same people 3-5 times a week for 5.5 years. I've also been running the server for most of that time, so I have a pretty big collection of stats. It is both neat and sad to know that I've shot over 2 million rockets. Don't get me started on plasma.
We still think that the Threewave mod is the best, especially for scaling well between 4 and 20 players. In the CaptureStrike mode, teams take turns attacking or defending, you start with all weapons and full armor, and a death lasts until the end of the round (3 min or less). 4 or less players lends better to Rocket Arena.
To this day, I've never found anything as fun to play multiplayer. I'm looking forward to Quake Live, but I'm guessing we're going to be screwed out of it by our firewall. - inactive, on 08/12/2008, -1/+7Does your Mighty Mouse prevent good grammar?
- minorgods, on 08/12/2008, -1/+7I want my grapple hook back
- seldon452, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6This isn't engadget. No need to go around spamming to get the first comment.
- robatjones, on 08/12/2008, -1/+7Oh man, there go my nights. Once this arrives in my room you won't see me for weeks!
- Slashered, on 08/12/2008, -0/+6mod support has not yet been revealed, either creation or porting existing mods, but info should be available soon. the physics have been changed sliiightly but overbounce is still there
- ldkronos, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5You probably didn't bother to look to the right and see 930MB 1280x720 download option, did you?
- Slashered, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5Personally, I never found ETQW to be anything other than just a good/decent game. To me, Return To Castle Wolfenstein, along with RTCW:ET, were much more influential and longer lasting games than ETQW. I don't see anything special about ETQW's singleplayer or multiplayer that makes it a must-have.
- blogosphear, on 08/12/2008, -2/+7Damn im getting hella lag just trying to watch the video
this server sucks - angers, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5guys, try downloading the video instead of playing the stream.
ZeRo4 vs. rapha w/ Slashered commentary in low quality for faster download (119.16 MB)

- hormel, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5video stream not found
- baseballerkra, on 08/12/2008, -0/+5Should've gone to Quakecon. We all have been beta testers for the past month.
