- Feasoron, on 10/10/2007, -7/+282So why do we get to have multiple users on windows then? I didn't buy a copy for every member of my family . . .
- airwalkery2k, on 10/10/2007, -5/+245It's funny how people who pirate the game don't have to worry about all of these silly restrictions.
- naterg, on 10/10/2007, -6/+176That is some retarded crap right there.
- Jakester156, on 10/10/2007, -5/+167Wow. I've been dugg!
I really wanted to buy this game, but there seems to be some sort of conspiracy by 2k against those who actually care about 1) what gets installed on their machines and 2) the rights of the end-user (which are not outweighed by the rights of the developers and publishers to protect their property). - ut2k4king, on 10/10/2007, -2/+147And these people wonder why there's so much piracy.
- redrain85, on 10/10/2007, -10/+124The tech's response is utterly absurd. If you want to watch a movie with your family, do you buy a DVD for every member of the household? Is this really the way 2K's management thinks? They have lost their minds.
- BamaStangGuy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+112There goes family movie night.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -4/+82I think at that point I'd pick up the crack from gamecopyworld and tell the tech to screw off.
- pbaehr, on 10/10/2007, -3/+80I'm pretty sure the DVD license is forbidding public showings, not enjoying a movie with your friends. Though, these days, who knows.
- Ouze, on 10/10/2007, -0/+69I must say 2K has really managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with this game. Never has so much potential goodwill been so squandered so quickly.
- Blackmane, on 10/10/2007, -5/+74This is probably one of the only things that has spoiled the release of this game. Why can't we go back to putting the DVD or CD in pressing install and playing the game. I don't mind putting in a serial number (because then it feels even more like mine). I don't want to have to jump through 20 loop holes and download and sign andy other crap just play the game.
Companies need to start realizing fast that people can be trusted to keep the game and not pirate it. Many people (in my experience) pirate a game because they can't be bothered to loop through the loops. Most cracks on the internet remove the pestering that is associated with DRM. - Darmog, on 10/10/2007, -3/+69This Digital Restrictions Management crap is getting way out of hand.
I won't be purchasing this game. Too bad, because I was seriously considering it, but ya gotta draw the line somewhere. - f4nt0m4s, on 10/10/2007, -0/+66a couple common sense solutions:
1) install the game on a global account that everyone can use
2) get out your eye patch, strap your peg-leg, and work around the DRM
3) buy 5 copies of the game
i bought bioshock because it was 39.99 at Circuit City, but at this point I would say just pirate it...DRM doesn't stop piracy, it just makes life difficult for the people who BUY THE GAME SO THEY DONT HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE HASSLE OF PIRATING. Developers need to make note of that...when DRM becomes more of a hassle than PIRATING a game there is a serious problem. - pseudo.hero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+64A shame 2K is doing all this to such a great game. Tarnishes the PC user base greatly.
- spyrochaete, on 10/10/2007, -0/+61I bought this game on launch day but the activation servers were down so I couldn't even install it - if you can't activate after installation the installer deletes the directory. This really pissed me off. Why am I being treated like a criminal when I have the box right beside me?
Circumventing the activation was a snap. I just installed the game, renamed the directory, and then cancelled out of the activation. The installer couldn't find the directory so it remained. Then I was able to play with my original CD.
Screw you, 2K. You pissed off your legit customers and your game was still pirated on release day. 2K even had the nerve to brag that they weren't using Starforce, which is why I bought it, but this was just as bad. - jsd8cc, on 10/10/2007, -2/+62Each individual computer. Not each individual.
- spudnic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+55Perfect example of DRM only making life harder for those who actually buy the game.
Pirated versions don't suffer any of these problems.... if they really want to stop pirates then they need to stop releasing crippled products. - Antiproton, on 10/10/2007, -3/+55This is not even close to true. You are not allow to exhibit a DVD for money. You are allowed to show it to friends and family, you can even use it for a "movie night" for a gathering as long as you don't charge for it. The Bioshock DRM is over the top absurd.
- Roger, on 10/10/2007, -5/+56Just download the cracked version, let 2K Games do whatever the hell they want.
If you feel bad then mail them a check. - Slovenian6474, on 10/10/2007, -0/+49Hell no my brother doesn't play my games for free. That's why i charge him.
- raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -6/+50Not sure if it's an official 2K policy but regardless they have sure blown ridiculous amounts of good press with their DRM & activation issues.
We've already got the game (for the 360) but if I were considering buying for the PC I wouldn't be at this point. - whatthefu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+40This is what I really dislike about computer gaming. While I'd prefer to use the mouse and keyboard, it was just easier to rent and play this game on the 360 without having to worry about shoddy business practices. It's a pity, though. The game deserves better.
- AlmostEvil, on 10/10/2007, -2/+38"I don't mind putting in a serial number"
Say that after installing C&C The First Decade... - ryanknapper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35You're admitting to it? Quick, log-off!
- clubby, on 10/10/2007, -3/+36Yup. I've been proudly playing my illegal copy of Bioshock for a few days now. Me and my buddy were all set to run out and buy it on payday, but then we found out that 2K hates its customers, so to avoid the hatred, we both decided to not be customers.
- HalFTW, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33http://thepiratebay.org/search/Bioshock
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+282K games should be smart enough to know that locking down games and putting up red tape for legit PAYING customers is going to
#1 cripple your customer base
#2 encourage piracy since pirated versions dont have BS to deal with (IE windows activations and keys do not exist on Tiny XP, etc)
#3 lose future or potiential legit PAYING customers
also with some pirated versions there isnt even an install (IE Halo 2, the instructions are to extract the archve and run the game) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27You're missing the point. The point is that 2K Games is trying to control what we do with the stuff we PAID for.
- Orion682, on 10/10/2007, -2/+27I doubt that that specific 2K tech moderator designed and implemented their DRM scheme for the game. It's the company's stance on the policy of their DRM that's the issue, because it echoes exactly what that moderator said.
- Konrad9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+24What the ***** people.
You made an AMAZING game and now you pull this *****? - oddmanout, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23i've actually legally bought software, then cracked that legal software because it was easier than calling the number, and waiting for someone to give me some authorization code
- joeyjojo402, on 10/10/2007, -8/+30You mean, you were always going to download it illegally from the start, right?
- Stormran, on 10/10/2007, -2/+24There's always a cracked version. Its called internet piracy.
- beatbox32, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22I think at that point, nobody will be buying their *****...I know I wouldn't.
- MosX, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25Obviously a lot of people care. That's why the article is on the front page.
- xenovis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+212k games delt a major blow to the PC gaming industry with Bioshock. The introduction of DRM, and policies that go agaist product fair use, more and more gamers are sick of the headaches and driven to the consoles for their games. As more PC games migrate over to consoles more and more developers move toward consoles. The PC gaming industry is in a serious slump, and I will not let 2k games forget that they stabbed the already wounded PC gaming industry in the heart by placing an asinine DRM into one of the most anticipated games this year.
I had to return my copy of Bioshock on the PC for the xbox version, due to getting a virus and not being able to uninstall the game properly. This began a 3 day headache not being able to activate my game and play it on my PC while pirates were playing with a NoCD crack released a day after the game. DRM will kill the PC gaming industry, and 2k is their white knight. - xxrealmsxx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22dugg up because its a no brainer, I hope someone from Bioshock is reading. We will always be able to pirate your games, stupid ***** like this just makes us do it because we don't like your company and spread the word to ppeople who would usually buy the damn thing.
- HolyChimp, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1910 years ago I would have thought that I wouldn't buy anything from anyone that made activate software over the internet, but it's pretty much the norm these days.
- zybron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19You should probably buy a copy for any pets you own, too, just in case they happen to glance towards the monitor while the game is on. Wouldn't want them to possibly glean some form of entertainment for free.
/sarcasm
Like 2k isn't making enough off the game already. - AlmostEvil, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19The uninstall credit thing has turned out to be false, it doesn't actually credit you. It's meant to be in a future patch.
- Antiproton, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19We're grown up. You're incredibly naive. That is NOT how licenses work. And this game needs to be boycotted so software companies understand we are tired of being treated like de facto criminals.
Ordinarily, I wouldn't pirate a game like this. But I will now just to demonstrate in my own small way that DRM hurts only legitimate customers. And you can take your sanctimony and cram it up your ass. - stormbine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17How has all this protection helped them though? Bioshock is already all over the web with apparently full working cracks. The pirates, or as you call them parasites, are playing this game, without all of this copy protection, and didn't pay a cent. And everyone that actually forked out some of their cash has to jump through all of these stupid little hoops to install this game on their pc.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Dl'd it, installed with no rootkit, played it in a day and a half, deleted it. Its a GAME, not the second coming.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17You've never downloaded a crack for a game you legally own? Actually, I've been tempted to pirate games I legally own just to avoid all the *****.
- musters, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17replying to AlmostEvil... I hear that, 9 serials later, I don't feel like playing any of the C&C's
replying to Blackmane... I totally agree with you, I'm almost temped to wait for RELOADED's release just because the install is going to be simpler than the install on the legit game. That is sad. It used to be the opposite. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17 per user per machine is the same as each user on a single machine
- shakin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17People who pirate the games aren't the problem. You see, those people are still pirating this game and they won't have silly restrictions. All the anti-piracy efforts are completely in vain because they are an obstacle for purchasers, but not for pirates.
- brasso, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Why support DRM?
- jgrossma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Right, because DRM schemes that cause problems for legitimate customers while having no effect whatsoever on pirates discourages piracy how?
- jkgm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Whiskey - Tango - Foxtrot. Is it really *that* easy to bypass their activation and copy protection?!?
