Empires Mod 2.0 for Half-Life 2 Releases Today

press.empiresleague.com — Empires 2.0, the award winning Half-Life 2 mod that combines FPS and RTS genres and features customizable tanks, is releasing at 4 PM EST today. The new release contains hundreds of new features, bug fixes, and new maps. Empires has been the recipient of many awards, including ModDB.com's Best Mutli-Genre Mod of 2006.

    One of the only games that relies on tactics and skill rather than blind luck.

      Sure games like CounterStrike have a 'spray factor' but when you play with better people there is no denying it takes a lot of skill.
      • Deif, on 12/01/2007, -2/+2Sure, but I'm talking about a near complete elimination of luck. TF2 has a blatant consistency with the luck factor with the inclusion of critical hits. In Empires a skilled player can sneak into an enemy base and sabotage buildings and surpass defenses undetected. An unskilled player will have no chance, and you have a true sense that when you are beat, you have been beaten by a superior player, not beaten by the system.

    • MrBojangl3s, on 12/01/2007, -1/+2Also CS:S and BF2 are now maintained by companies.... and they aren't neccesarily in development. Mod communities crack down on exploits like crazy, and if you were a part of v1.0 of Empires you would know just how many exploits were stomped out.

    Look around, there is a torrent for this to help in DLs, great game, awesome community. Can't wait to see more people in game.

      Anyway, the trailer was certainly well done and the mod seems sorta neat, but with the deceitful comment spam apparently originating from the emp forums, I no longer have any desire to download it

You're just doing it out of spite because new people on digg aren't participating in the rest of the site.

      It could very well be that you still see parts of BF in there, although I have never seen it :P

    One team consists of ONE PERSON: The "Commander" who builds and then sends out his NPC soldiers and tanks for great justice upon the rebellion. One of the units he controls is, well, himself, who must be protected.
    The other team consists of a bunch of "heroes" each of which have their own slightly different weaponset. They must prevent the empire from capturing certain command posts (sort of like BF) Their advantages are that they are human, and thus individually smarter, and can go inside buildings to fire from windows or take back-alley shortcuts.
    I played an early version, and felt it was very unique. Assuming they have gotten rid of most of the bugs, this is definitely going to be one of the better mods for Source.

      There are two gamestyles: Objective capture the flag, and skirmish RTS. You sort of correctly explained the objective capture mode, but not really. Go read the website.

Empires is a RTS/FPS mix with both teams having one commander that places buildings and commands the rest of the team. The rest of the team builds the buildings placed by the commander, kills the other team, and drives tanks/jeeps/etc to take over the map. The commander also researches tech for the rest of the team to use on the vehicles (better armor/engines and different kinds of firepower). It is like playing battlefield, but better.
