Elder Scrolls MMORPG confirmed!
destructoid.com — Elder Scrolls Online is a go, and I think it's safe to say that World of Warcraft may have its first legitimate challenge to the MMORPG throne, don't you? We'll see what happens in the future, but for now, Hines is saying nothing else.

- digg it
- thedigger1010, on 11/11/2007, -34/+26hope this comes out for the 360........
- johnhummel, on 11/10/2007, -2/+13Actually, that's an interesting point. Will this be PC only, or, with the work the company has done on the consoles, is there a chance it could be truly multi-platform? There will be issues on how to work out payments (such as through Live, of course), but this idea of having it on the PS3/360/PC is not an impossibility.
- TheFoolyCooly, on 11/10/2007, -1/+4It is for console makers that wont allow it.
- davidbattley, on 11/10/2007, -7/+3I would say iPS3/360/PC is an impossibility. I can see Pc/360 but i can't Imagine MS allowing 360 players to play against PS£ owners and they are the ones that control xbox live. They (MS) might even go as far as saying If they (Bethesda) want pc/360 they need to make it Vista only. i bet it will kick a lot of arse anyway
- xino, on 11/10/2007, -0/+21FFXI which runs on PS2, PS3 running the PS2 version, Xbox 360, and PC all inter operate with each other.
- Elranzer, on 11/09/2007, -0/+6Interestingly, FFXI 360 bypasses Xbox Live, you do not need a subscription in order to use it. This is contradictory to Sega's Phantasy Star Online which requires Xbox Live (Gold) even though Sega has their own servers and fees.
- xino, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1It's also interesting that the game has achievements. Does that mean if I do some of these achievements on PS2, PS3, or PC and then login to FFXI on my X360, it will instantly check all that stuff and I can have achievements unlocked? Also, are FFXI accounts tied to the Xbox Live account(silver or gold)? I am just curious as I could see people letting FFXI players they know, that play on X360, use their gamer tags just to login to FFXI and have all the achievements unlocked if it was not tied.
- MouseCircus, on 11/09/2007, -0/+3Um, are you sure you're not talking about Phantasy Star Universe? Because if I remember correctly, PSU doesn't require a gold subscription either.
- JapaneseEconomy, on 11/11/2007, -15/+3I hope not. If it comes out for the 360 it won't be able to have Oblivion quality graphics. Imagine how much the 360 would slow down with 60-120 people running around in the same area on Oblivion. What level of graphics would we expect if it was on 360? I guessing WoW level.
- NinjaBoy, on 11/10/2007, -1/+6Different client settings could change that. Smaller texture maps and such for 360
- logandurand, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2You just proved his point, the game would look worse.
- JapaneseEconomy, on 11/10/2007, -7/+3Seems most people want it to come out on the 360...
- worldgate, on 11/13/2007, -1/+1I hope it /only/ comes out on the 360. And whats with all the '360 couldnt do it' when consoles are way better then pc's.
console = place game in console, press play.
computer = check box for compatibility, verify that you have 20gb of hard drive space, 4 gb of ram, the latest video cards. Then wait 2 - 6 hours for the game patches to update. Then hope it doesnt crash. - worldgate, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1BLAH
- worldgate, on 11/13/2007, -1/+1I hope it /only/ comes out on the 360. And whats with all the '360 couldnt do it' when consoles are way better then pc's.
- VenTatsu, on 11/10/2007, -1/+1By the time the game is out we may have another generation of consoles. Even if that is not the case graphics quality tend to improve over the life of a console because game makers learn the tricks to get the most from the fixed hardware. The lessons learned from Oblivion could allow a better game that could allow more characters on the screen at once without reducing quality or dropping the frame rate.
- NinjaBoy, on 11/10/2007, -1/+6Different client settings could change that. Smaller texture maps and such for 360
- jwiegmann, on 11/11/2007, -12/+10As if oblivion already didn't dumb down the elder scrolls series enough for nehanderthal console players to grasp... MMORPGS are already simplified and carebear enough, keep it on the PC platform where a good MMO elder scrolls game belongs!
- worldgate, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1Uh, i played both the pc and 360 version and they are both the same. Tool.
- threemagic, on 11/10/2007, -4/+6Can a true MMORPG come out for a console? Given that most MMORPG content is keyboard/mouse driven?
- geartype2, on 11/08/2007, -1/+4ffxi plays amazingly well. I thought the same way you did until I had the chance to try it out. I think the only reason I touched the usb keyboard was to chat, the game worked much better on a controller than a keyboard in my opinion though, which is saying a lot.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I tried to play that game with a friend via my computer, and the controls were horrible. I assume it's a lot better on the console.
- McGrude, on 11/09/2007, -4/+3Right because you can't possibly use a different control scheme.
1) Is the game multiplayer? check
2) Is the game massively multiplayer (e.g. hundreds) ? check
3) Is the game online? check
4) Is the game an RPG? check
So yes it can be.
It isn't necessarily a MMOKMRPG (massively multiplayer keyboard and mouse RPG)

- juicebag, on 11/10/2007, -4/+4If it does, I would expect them to dumb down the PC version to enhance the console version, like FFXI, and Oblivion to some extent.
- dillibob, on 11/09/2007, -3/+2i hope this doesnt come out. i personally like the singleplayer
- Unremarkable, on 11/09/2007, -2/+3Whoa, epiphany!
Don't buy it.
- Unremarkable, on 11/09/2007, -2/+3Whoa, epiphany!
- ats314, on 11/10/2007, -4/+4why would this comment be dug down? its perfectly legitimate. I also hope it comes out on 360.
- chrismgtis, on 11/11/2007, -0/+3The last thing we want is a bunch of you console jerks ruining our mmorpg. Stay away.
- johnhummel, on 11/10/2007, -2/+13Actually, that's an interesting point. - KrustyTClown, on 11/12/2007, -8/+34This game will be huge.
- SuperWinner, on 11/08/2007, -1/+2Like bull?
- tywolff, on 11/09/2007, -2/+1I want a Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy MMORPG
- VegaObscura3, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4There is a Final Fantasy MMORPG. Just google for Final Fantasy XI Online. It's been out for about 8 years now.
- HaltingPoint, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, huge as in in it will take you 2 full days (real time) to get between cities because you know, its all about the realism.
But yes, this will be incredibly cool, if just for the fact that they have an extremely flexible magic system and I can't wait for a game (besides Asheron's Call) where not every mage has the same arsenal of spells.
- king3vbo, on 11/10/2007, -12/+24***** YES!
- ats314, on 11/09/2007, -3/+1my thoughts exactly
- mayan, on 11/12/2007, -10/+161This MMO is going to be so HUGE, so MASSIVE that you'll be all by yourself. With your horse. And your horse armor.
- Klarth, on 11/13/2007, -3/+27£20 a month subscription fee. And that's just for the horse armour.
- SuperWinner, on 11/13/2007, -14/+8I WILL NOT pay monthly for a game.
- ajamison, on 11/13/2007, -3/+13Thanks for sharing?
- DMCer, on 11/12/2007, -9/+1I just buried this, PLEASE get a life, people.

....- Klarth, on 11/11/2007, -2/+20***** Destructoid. The place only exists because the founder submitted his stories to Digg, posted those Digg links on a score of forums, bitched when people told him to bugger off, and BAM! Tickets to E3.
Smooth move, but man, what an *****.

- Ganpachi, on 11/13/2007, -6/+55Great... another game without a pause button that I won't have time to play.
- skizzy, on 11/13/2007, -2/+25You can still play but you just wont be as good as the kids that do nothing but play all day.
- iticu, on 11/11/2007, -0/+1If you want to be the best at a game but don't want to play the game alot, then MMO's aren't for you.
If you don't care about the game and just want to have some fun with other people, and generally progessing, then an MMO is for you.
Why do people always expect free epics? It doesn't make the game any funner. =-
- NoMiT, on 11/13/2007, -8/+20Buried for proving nothing.

- Nildayan, on 11/12/2007, -2/+4Well, I believe he was referencing Maddox's balls. So I would expect it to be somewhere in the Sun range.
- RainNIU, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5Some balls are bigger than others.
- shadowblade989, on 11/12/2007, -3/+4I might actually get this one.
- drachemorder, on 11/13/2007, -4/+7I still won't. I don't want a freaking MMO. I hate them. I hate them with an unrivalled passion. They should be making another true Elder Scrolls game, but they waste their time on this steaming pile of bovine excrement instead.
- chirox901, on 11/11/2007, -0/+0Dude, please. That's very outspoken of you, but you have no idea if it's bovine excrement or not. You don't even know if it's going to exist.
So please, find some bovine excrement and muck around in it for a bit before you judge.

- Xondar, on 11/09/2007, -1/+12Star Trek Online is going to be a ***** WoW clone. It's seriously going to suck quite hard.
- manifestdata, on 11/09/2007, -1/+5Afraid not. Not everyone is 30 and living in their parents bassment, so I think Elder Scrolls might be bigger.
- MerryMortician, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2stfu red shirt.
- whatthefu, on 11/13/2007, -7/+86The Elder Scrolls games are good because of their incredibly strong single player. This doesn't guarantee it'll be a good MMORPG.
- heartcoldfusion, on 11/13/2007, -9/+16The incredibly strong single player is good because of a really good development team. I'll let you connect the last two dots.
- SKick, on 11/12/2007, -4/+8Because developing single player games is equivalent to developing multi-player games? Your dots suck.
- Cid420, on 11/12/2007, -0/+8If they an incorporate the gameplay their previous games had into a multiplayer setting, they will do just fine ;)
- slimscane, on 11/13/2007, -1/+11Exactly, honestly, I just don't see it working all that well. Or at least, I should say, I don't see PvP working all that well. Everyone would either have to be masters of illusion or alteration, or they would have to have some really "nifty" enchantments, I'm of course talking about combating paralyze. On top of that, masters of restoration would be almost invincible.
Besides the PvP issues, there is the whole thing where you can become epically powerful at high levels, but on that same note, you can also be relatively underpowered at your cap. I say this because of the natural level caps in elder scrolls game, you can only either go until all of your major (and minor, depending on the skill system they want to borrow from) are maxed, or until your attributes are maxed. Alright, that's fine, I mean, 100 on all attributes is the best you can get, and it's unlikely that you'll max you luck before you max all your skills, but depending on what race and class you pick, you could easily max your skills before you max your attributes, leaving you with a character that's capped, but not as powerful. The main problem that would arise from this, is that you will have characters that are great in the early game and at start because they chose a race and class that compliment each other, but then they are underpowered at end game because their skills start at a higher level. On the other hand, you have the other characters who suck at game start, but are maxed at end game, this can generally only happen if you make a character with very low skill levels to start (achieved most easily by having a class that doesn't utilize your races strong suit). Your average player would more likely than not be the former, so try imagining putting a hundred hours or two and capping your character only to realize that you can't ever be as strong some of the other players.
Probably the biggest thing that bothers me, though, is that I can't imagine an MMO letting you be anything. I love the elder scrolls games in part because of what I can do, and I just don't see TESO letting you, say, become the head of the fighters/thieves/mages guild, or to become the Nervarine, or the lord of the shivering isles. Will elder scrolls online let me kill every inhabitant of a town, or assassinate someone along the lines of Vivec? And if it does let me do those things, they would have to regenerate, "what if one of them gave a quest?" couldn't have them gone forever when there are other players would want to use them. In the Elder Scrolls games you actually feel like you singularly make a huge difference on the world you exist in, your actions have permanent consequences and your word is law as long as you can back it up. But in an MMO, you can't have that, it just wouldn't work - and there goes what makes TES TES.
Those fears aside, I am very excited to hear more about this, maybe it'll be a scaled down MMO, with only hundreds instead of thousands of players.- timjim31, on 11/13/2007, -3/+2Ok that was way too long to read but I dugg you up for the effort :)
- yohnstoppable, on 11/12/2007, -1/+6I dugg him, because I agree completely. My main issue would be tweaking my character, which is my main source of fun in the Elder Scrolls games since Daggerfall. How would you allow that level of modification in an mmorpg? So many things would be crazy overpowered
- Tyrghast, on 11/13/2007, -4/+0buried for wall of text. split that one paragraph to at least 2 honestly...

- RoboB0b, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5Why are you getting dugg down? The update on the Destructoid article says that they were wrong and it's not confirmed. I'd say that qualifies as inaccurate.
- necbone, on 11/09/2007, -2/+1A PLACE AT THE TABLE!!!!!
- floatingpoints, on 11/08/2007, -8/+1I dunno... they're gonna have to mimic a lot of they wanna live up to WoW, which is currently the only MMO to widely support a casual AND a hardcore player base without alienating or favoring one group over the other.
- Defuser, on 11/09/2007, -5/+1What? WoW lost all of the hardcore gamers when they drove a spike through the heart of the 40-man raids. The players now days think they're "hardcore" if they've run Steam Vaults twice with a pickup group.
- floatingpoints, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4Nah.
Obviously you don't play ;)
Tons of hardcore content - the reason 40 mans were done away with is because it was next to impossible to have everyone successfully scale their gear to progress (which is why hardly anyone ever did Naxx)
SSC, Black Temple... very hard stuff. - Tebixan, on 11/09/2007, -1/+3There never was any hardcore players in WoW. Maybe people that played way too much, but not hardcore.
Go play Meridian 59, Ultima Online, or EQ1 before it was pussified. Back when dying actually ment something, 40 was a medium sized raid group, and it took years to reach the end game.- allenthar, on 11/13/2007, -0/+4And the games were more like jobs than games.
- floatingpoints, on 11/08/2007, -0/+4Nah.

- Tserk, on 11/12/2007, -0/+11Just don't forget an auction house please Bethesda.
- floatingpoints, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5Auction house is a necessity in any MMO.
The only way to automate player driven economy.- Lehawk, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Consignment is also a great way to sell large quantity items that can be purchased in partial amounts for a set price immediately. Useful for crafting resources, but not so much for rare drops.
- datastorageguy, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Too bad Tabula Rasa devs apparently didn't have time to include one in launch.
- floatingpoints, on 11/12/2007, -0/+5Auction house is a necessity in any MMO.
- Dustin00, on 11/12/2007, -3/+27Waitaminute -- a company with a long line of successful single player games is going massively multiplayer?
This should go smoothly.- ucbmckee, on 11/12/2007, -3/+11You mean, like Blizzard?
- GreyICE, on 11/12/2007, -0/+19Because Battle.net wasn't the best multiplayer system ever or anything...
- Dustin00, on 11/12/2007, -1/+4I mean exactly like Blizzard, which went from Diablo to StarCraft, ran Battle.net, saw how hackers mess up the systems, how lag effected play, etc. They took that experience and THEN created an MMO.
They still had difficulties, but I think any company launching an MMO without this experience is diving into the hurricane end of the ocean first.
- ShiggyPop, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1What about Square-Enix? They were the first company that popped into my mind for kicking ass when it comes to single player and then throwing Final Fantasy Online out there. Not the best MMO game, but I think it counts as having a good solid user base and gameplay to it.
- ucbmckee, on 11/12/2007, -3/+11You mean, like Blizzard?
- swiftekho, on 11/12/2007, -8/+13This just in, Blizzard announces Wrath of the Lich King release date a week before Elder Scrolls Online...
- Defuser, on 11/12/2007, -3/+25Yeah, like Blizzard has ever announced a release date. You sir, are Epic Fail.
- aazn, on 11/12/2007, -0/+12Starcraft II, I still wait for you!
- Defuser, on 11/12/2007, -3/+25Yeah, like Blizzard has ever announced a release date. You sir, are Epic Fail.

- Cid420, on 11/09/2007, -0/+5Its not a "waste" if you are enjoying yourself.
- SharkyTech, on 11/13/2007, -0/+13Said the person criticizing MMOs on Digg.
- noumuon, on 11/09/2007, -0/+7almost everything is a waste of life according to one perspective or another... so you may as well enjoy yourself while wasting away.
- chubbstar, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1and you dont have to waste if there arnt monthly (ie addiction inducing) rates. i hope the learn that hourly rates are the way to go but im the only person ive ever met thats even thought of this.

- mrelusive, on 11/13/2007, -0/+7Hey! Aren't you the hero who saved Kvatch?
- sathias, on 11/13/2007, -8/+1I heard a rumour that you're an idiot, any truth to that?
- sathias, on 11/13/2007, -0/+2Obviously there is a lot of people who haven't done the Arena missions :P
- crossmr, on 11/12/2007, -7/+4oh goody.. regardless of the glowing praises oblivion was just shiny, and had lots of flaws. I don't see how this is going to be any better and why it would be any more of a contender then anything else out there.
- warcin, on 11/12/2007, -3/+9And I was really starting to like that thing people called real life.
- Stevethegreat, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3Real life (TM) sucks, you don't save princesses and the reward system sucks...
- zate, on 11/12/2007, -13/+22"and I think it's safe to say that World of Warcraft may have its first legitimate challenge to the MMORPG throne, don't you?"
No, I don't. I don't think any of the new games understand how/why WoW is so popular.
-- EQ2 is trying to discover the secret sauce by systematically copying WoW mechanics till it finds the right one.
-- Vanguard thought the secret sauce lied in pretending it was a poor mans version of E1.
-- WHO has semi tanked.
-- Hellgate discovered being Diablo 3 didn't find it either.
-- LoTRO thought the interface was the secret sauce
-- DDO, well I don't think they were looking.
So far not a single new/recent MMO has worked out why WoW is so popular.
So forgive me if I don't get all warm and gooey over some vaporware that doesn't even have a beta yet. The secret sauce does not lie in butchering a great single player game and slapping it into an MMO model. The secret sauce isn't the content.- UtopiaInTheSky, on 11/12/2007, -1/+32All this talk about "secret sauce" is making me hungry.
- manifestdata, on 11/11/2007, -17/+8WOW fanboy to the max. Try playing an Elder Scrolls game, then talk. For now, keep farming gold with your newb hunter.
- UwasaWaya, on 11/09/2007, -2/+12Buried for using 'to the max'.
But probably should be dugg for being able to connect to the internet from the 80s. - zate, on 11/09/2007, -1/+3Ah no, if anything I would be an EQ2 fanboy. WoW is fun though, and there are reasons its fun. Not so much a special sauce as a 11 secret herbs and spices. Other MMO's are only getting part of the recipe right.
- UwasaWaya, on 11/09/2007, -2/+12Buried for using 'to the max'.
- VinnyD, on 11/12/2007, -5/+11How about Guild Wars? Decent graphics, decent story, and a price that can't be beat -- free. Not sure if the mechanics are the same, as I don't play WoW, nor any of the others, but I frequently hear the WoW vs. Guild Wars arguments.
- JLecker, on 11/12/2007, -1/+6Guild Wars is an awesome game, no doubt--I've been playing it (off and on) for two years. As much as its relative success draws comparison to WoW, the two are really very different beasts. For one thing, GW isn't a true MMORPG, as the whole world is instanced. From what I've read, GW2 is going to be more similar to WoW.
- noumuon, on 11/12/2007, -8/+2yea yea, that whole "true mmorpg" bs... just ask, is it massive? is it multiplayer and online? is it an rpg? well, there you go...
- zate, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2I forgot Guild Wars, cant really comment on it though because I havent played it. I have to assume that they havent worked out the right mix of things yet either or we'd be using them as the yard stick.
- Leo21k, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Guildwars sucked, it's a pvp game with dash of pve added in.
- nallelcm, on 11/12/2007, -0/+13YAY for acronyms!

- stigma15, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3So what is the secret sauce? Or, if we knew, would we quit eating it?
- zate, on 11/12/2007, -1/+4haha.. its more like the 11 secret herbs and spices than a single secret sauce and I think, thats what most companies are missing. Its alot of different things combined, and that sounds very "well duh" but without writing a whole blog post on it that about sums it up.
- Gizza, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2I think it might have something to do with Blizzards decade+ long history of making great games.
- Cockslap, on 11/12/2007, -10/+4What's Wow's secret sauce? Starcraft and Diablo 2. B-net kiddies are whats making wow because they dont know any better and are all blizzard fanbois. News flash, WOW sucks. Starcraft > WOW
- lilbitmoreslyk, on 11/12/2007, -0/+9how the hell do you compare starcraft to WOW? they're completely different
- ajamison, on 11/12/2007, -1/+2Seriously! Totally different. The internets confuses me at times.
- Cockslap, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not comparing the two but SC is by FAR the better game fom Blizzards library and its TEN years old. WOW is gay.
- ajamison, on 11/12/2007, -1/+2Seriously! Totally different. The internets confuses me at times.
- aazn, on 11/12/2007, -4/+1Starcraft is ***** leet.

- lilbitmoreslyk, on 11/12/2007, -0/+9how the hell do you compare starcraft to WOW? they're completely different
- allenthar, on 11/12/2007, -0/+6At least there's EvE, which is significantly different from WoW and at least mildly successful.
- zate, on 11/11/2007, -0/+2yeah a friend is way into EVE and it is very different. I dont think they are looking for the secret to WoW's success either though.
- Pake, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3"Hellgate discovered being Diablo 3 didn't find it either." It's not meant to contend with WoW as it's not a MMORPG. I do agree with the rest of the list though. All these games claiming to be WoW's only competition, while they end up sucking. Also, Elder Scrolls can sit right next to Warhammer and Age of Conan, because those two have been anticipated for quite a while now and have been consistently viewed as a possible WoW contender.
- gr0ss, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2Actually Vanguard tried to implement an evolving world/game driven by what characters do, and it has some really well made classes and unique ideas. It had a really cool ***** concept. But they destroyed it by not doing what they told everyone was going to be in the game
- wilsonthecat, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2It's not a single component but more like (sounds like an advert)
- Very fast and flexible graphics engine. No loading of maps except instances and continents.
- Integrated easy-to-use chat. A large amount amount of people treat WoW as an interfactive chat room, every post-WOW mmo I've played has failed at this.
- Easy friends/group/guild system. Again every game I've played has also failed at this.
- Very easy to use interface
- Instantly understandable green/blue/purple item classification.
- Modable interface (a winning formula, look at winamp)
- Excellent character animations
- Music that fits each zone well
- Every type of geometry/weather catered for: sunny beach, snowy mountain, jungle, forest, volcano, plains of Africa and so on
Plus all the other obvious ones like lots of items with good 3d graphics. It was 5 years in the making by a very successful and experienced games company so it's no surprise. Elder scrolls will definitely compete on almost all of the list above, except the social factors which we will see. - TrueUSMarine, on 09/10/2008, -0/+0Thus we have all the ignorant people who think WoW is the best. This is rather simple, well for me anyhow cause I dont waste my life on WoW like you guys do, infact I dont even waste my life on games...
WoW is not the best MMORPG out there, not at all, FYI Darkfall is gonna be a very huge MMO coming out with many features they promised that are actually true considering they just released their 100% gameplay trailer a couple weeks ago, and the way that this mmorpg plays is what many many people want. See, people eventually get bored with WoW, and the only reason why it's popular is because it's been created by Blizzard and everyone knows blizzard for Warcraft 1, 2 and 3 and OF COURSE starcraft. Alot of the mmorpgs out there were never RTS games before, WoW used to be a RTS. Look at starcraft 2, thats not even a MMO and people are tripping over it, I bet if it became a MMO it would destroy WoW. WoW does not have good character animations, the graphics are not that great and I have a Nvidia 8800GTS graphics card and it's item classification is copied by many other games. FYI EQ 2 was huge and let's not forget WoW copied alot of features from EQ 2. The spell effects are way better in eq 2 then they are in WoW, Many games have easy friends and group/guild system. Warhammer is a very anticipated game too and is in beta and ive heard nothing but good things, Warhammer will be a challenge for WoW infact I think when Oblivion online comes out I highly doubt WoW will still be big as it is. Look at oblivion, it's a very successful single player game, people STILL play it and it's a single player game, now if they make it a mmorpg it is very clear that it'll destroy world of warcraft anyday...
Warcraft negatives - It has very bad PVP, the maps suck, there is hardly anywhere to go for pvping, everyone takes things seriously in the game. Ive met woman who left their boyfriends and/or husbands because of the game how pathetic. Let's not forget the spell shaders are bad and textures, the graphics period...some of the higher level spell effects are alright but the majority aren't that great looking. Oh and I really really hate the way the characters are animated it's horrible.
The game has been out for almost four years and they haven't done anything new. When I first got to the Outlands (the new land added in the expansion) I told my room mate that if I have to go on another boar hunting quest, I was quitting the game. Sure enough, within a couple of quest, I had to collect twelve samples of boar blood. To make matters worse, only about one in five boars had a sample on them. How the hell does a boar have no blood on them? Nearly every single quest in the game is a repeat of a previous quest and most have a ridiculously frustrating drop rate on quest items.
Now games like Oblivion, you can do ANYTHING. Enough said. You guys already know the capabilites of WoW and let's not forget that and Darkfall will be the first game with real time combat none of that target and click ***** and hotkey bars where u drag ur spell icons and just click you actually have to aim at the bastard and it actually takes strategy to fight. You all know how it works in Oblivion im sure, Darkfall is gonna have that feature too.
Darkfall - You can build your own cities, they are guild ran eventually and you can hire your own guards, hell you don't even have to be a damn adventurer you can join a guild or move into a guild city your friendly with and just be a smith or a shopkeeper or inn keeper. You can be a merchant, there are no set classes it works like oblivion you just level up the skills you see fit for your character and there is no major or minor. The game has stunning graphic effects especially the spell shaders and really good graphics engine. Look at their forums theres already hundreds of thousands of people waiting for JUST the beta and the beta isn't even out yet. They also showed like I mentioned earlier a 100% gameplay video no fancy ***** it was pure gameplay and I can tell and the game was beautiful. You can be a damn pirate for crying outloud and build a base of operations on a remote island. Everyone can be attacked ANYWHERE at ANY level and in my opinion that is very good for roleplaying purposes and not to mention the wars between guilds and their cities. Not like everyone is gonna be an ***** and kill you and im sure they'll have some kind fo penalty or youll have commited a crime and be hunted. Its a very good challenge to me and makes it more realistic. Now all this being said, and this is gonna contradict my argument as well but I dont even care, but everytime someone mentions a new game coming out and there is a subject about that game SOMEONE always brings up wow, I hope this will shut you wow lovers the hell up and focus on the subject and I believe that is Elders Scroll 5
- jasondragon, on 11/11/2007, -18/+4Competition for WoW? How? Quests in Elder Scrolls games and stories are horrible, predictable, and boring.
- bullhead2007, on 11/11/2007, -1/+8And WoW's stories werent?

I mean who could predict this stuff in WOW, it has never been done in any other MMOs before. Idiot.
- noumuon, on 11/11/2007, -0/+3horrible, predictable and boring... you just completely described every mmo quest in existence... they're all the same *****. find a person, go get/do some simple task for them. if you don't like rpgs, why are you playing them?

- Defuser, on 11/11/2007, -9/+2Just download Dungeon Runners. It's absolutely free to both download and play online, and it's about ten thousand times more fun than World Of Warcraft is lately. - adenansu, on 11/12/2007, -4/+12i'm really saddened by this. the elder scrolls games are some of the finest single player games around. warhammer is going to grab a good chunk of wow's players, focus on making elder scrolls 5, dump the online stuff :( they weren't as focused as they could have been with oblivion and it really shows.
- aazn, on 11/12/2007, -7/+6Really shows? Oblivion is ***** amazing and you need to shut the ***** up sir.
- noumuon, on 11/12/2007, -2/+3for some reason, there's always some idiot who will look at the new elder scrolls game and say "well, it's not as big land-wise as the last; therefore, bethesda didn't put in as much effort." of course, they completely ignore the fact that the engine requirements for world development have skyrocketed over the previous engine. yea, you know... there's no focus when you have to do 5 billion hours of scripted dialog, bump and parallax map everything in the game, script in world actions, etc... you know, because all that stuff was in morrowind and daggerfall.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+5The thing that killed it for me was the scaled enemies. They scaled way too high, unless you do some crazy calculations to decide how to level up your skills so you get that +5 ability boost when you level, and then it isn't fun anymore.

- Lane, on 11/12/2007, -0/+4It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, honestly most of my enjoyment of oblivion really came when i modded the crap out of it with all the free downloads. The official ones were all pretty lame stuff that really should have been there in the first place. Theres even a book in a cave with "horse armor plans" which upon reading tells you to take it to the imperial city, sigh just another thing they will most likely get 90% and have to force it out the door.

Yet another fantasy setting MMO. Where is cyberpunk (blow AO out yer butt, sorry that ain't it). Where is a mad max/gamma world MMO (autoassault was kind of cheap... sorry). There are SOO many other genres out there that can be turned into MMO's... give the ***** elves and wizards a break already, please. Innovate a little.- GreyICE, on 11/12/2007, -0/+3The problem is no one is going to fund those. It costs millions to make an MMO. I don't think non-WoW players know how complex such a simple looking game like WoW is....- GreyICE, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6Okay, I play WOW. I like WOW. It is ABSOULTELY NOT TRUE that WOW can't be beaten. It really has many areas that could be improved. The fact that every other MMO to date has had even more areas that sucked doesn't mean there isn't room for a better game than WOW.

- taintedzodiac, on 11/09/2007, -2/+2As much as I wish a new game would come along to challenge WoW (other than WH), this isn't going to be it. Not enough mass appeal to casuals.
- pixelfox, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2I don't think that, at first, this will be huge, unless it's for consoles. I mean, WoW is a similar MMORPG in the sense of a high fantasy-esque environment-- and will those gamers who have literally spent a year or more game time on one game switch so easily? It'll be interesting to see what happens, but I don't think just the Elder Scrolls name can do it.
- Krakn3Dfx, on 11/11/2007, -0/+4I think LotRO has been the first legit competitor, it's doing pretty well at this point, and they're adding content pretty frequently, new raiding instances, mythology characters, etc.
I like both games, I don't play em, because I don't have the kind of time commitment needed, but they're both great MMO examples.
Elder Scrolls MMO could be very cool, I'll be interested to see how it pans out over time.- alperea, on 11/08/2007, -3/+1If you don't play em, how do u know which is better? the graphics?? I hope not.
- Jrr6415sun, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1I have played both LOTRO and WOW, and I agree that LOTRO is a close competitor... it's a massive world that is amazing to explore, and doing quests is actually FUN. The stories and lore are amazing, and you actually feel like you have a purpose doing quests. I actually read the quests and enjoy it... there are definitely some downfalls but with some improvements it will be a fighter.
- Puphles, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but just watch PVP be leveled.
- VinnyD, on 11/12/2007, -0/+4The Elder Scrolls MMORPG will officially beat WoW when you get your first "first-person POV" "LEEEEEEEROY JENKINS" moment on YouTube.
- xixor, on 11/12/2007, -0/+4I have never played an MMORPG before, but as Oblivion is one of the most visually stunning and fun games I have ever come across, I may have to give it a try. However, a few complaints that I hope Bethesda will read:
- more monsters. Who cares how good the scenery renders, you get tired of fighing one of the 8 available monsters in the game
- different dungeon and textures, almost all dungeons have exactly the same textures, look and feel, the only difference is the layout (the monsters are always the same however)- noumuon, on 11/12/2007, -0/+2i agree that if bethesda comes out with an mmo, they need to beef it up, but i recommend to you to mod the ***** out of your oblivion game. vanilla oblivion is nothing like modded oblivion at all. modded oblivion is possibly the best single player game available right now.
- blaze4metal, on 11/13/2007, -0/+1More weapon types, for the love of God.
- lemur, on 11/12/2007, -0/+4You guys sure love protecting your horses. :-/
- Matteos, on 11/08/2007, -5/+5Elders Scrolls is dead now.
- ats314, on 11/12/2007, -1/+1that takes some massive talent to sell thousands of expansion packs for a dead game.
- dgh1973, on 11/12/2007, -2/+5Sorry, I just have to continue my rant here...
You have to be nuts to release a fantasy MMO unless you plan on redefining the genre. With all of blizzards rep and success with WoW, a WoW sequel will also dominate. It also appears safe to say that while MMO's are real money makers, they are also VERY costly to maintain and support.
You need to be innovative to last, and doubly so if you want to compete with blizzard in the fantasy space IMHO. That's what made them the winner, graphics, deep quest system with lots of pointers helping people find/complete them... they innovated by fleshing out the classic EQesque MMO and tried to take a lot of the pain out of it and succeeded for the most part. I think they've succeeded enough to own the space personally, however I no longer play because I'm SICK OF ELVES AND WIZARDS!

"[Update: It seems that the original story in which Jim sourced in this article jumped to more than a few conclusions. We just got off of the phone with Bethesda's Manager of PR and Marketing Erin Losi, who wanted to clarify a few things.
For one, Bethesda has not announced or confirmed that an Elder Scrolls MMO is in the works. As she points out, the $300 million dollars in question was received by Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media. This money will be invested across a "multititude of projects."
As for the an Elder Scrolls MMO, Losi told us that no such announcement has been made. Looking at the above quote from the original QJ.net story, it appears that some drastic leaps in logic were made to reach conclusion of a "confirmation." Regarding the registered Elder Scrolls Online domain, Losi points out that this is standard practice, where Bethesda will snatch up a number of domains related to their licenses.
We apologize for any confusion we might have caused with this story, and for now, the Elder Scrolls MMO simply doesn't exist."- alche, on 11/09/2007, -1/+0durr
