- Joeshie, on 11/27/2007, -16/+124Honestly, I would be excited, but seeing as the second game was extremely disappointing, I'm not going to get my hopes up for this game.
Once again, my biggest concern will be the dumbing down of game mechanics to appease console-kiddies. - TGMD, on 11/27/2007, -9/+80There was a Deus Ex 2?
- inactive, on 11/27/2007, -3/+66Shhh..we don't talk about that one.
- merper, on 11/27/2007, -1/+53Hell, if they just redid the graphics and came up with a new story, I would be all for them reusing the exact gameplay/upgrade system from the first game.
- beyondinfinity, on 11/27/2007, -0/+47This is great. Deus Ex is a game that MUST be played if you haven't. It's quite a captivating game. Excellent storyline, dialog and fun gamplay. I highly recommend it. Here is a taste.
"What good's an honest soldier if he can be ordered to behave like a terrorist?" -JC Denton - consoneo, on 11/27/2007, -13/+54Agreed, screw consoles and their lack of precision movement. You just can't enjoy an FPS with incremental controls like you can with the mouse. (I can't anyhow... just can't do it!)
- Zettabyte, on 11/27/2007, -6/+43Hell yeah!
Please don't develop simutaniously on the console platforms. Because, Xbox ruined DX:IW, due to User, specfication and control limitation. - TotalHalibut, on 11/27/2007, -3/+39THERE WAS NO SEQUEL. DO NOT TALK ABOUT IT.
- roystgnr, on 11/27/2007, -1/+34Hell, if they just redid the graphics and reused the same story, I'd happily pay for another copy of the first game.
- TantrooM, on 11/27/2007, -3/+29Deus ex 2: The Invisible Game..
- ShatteredBlade, on 11/27/2007, -1/+25But compared to the first game, it was a huge disappointment.
- 4Paws, on 11/27/2007, -8/+31I love Deus Ex. But Deus Ex 2 sucks.
Don't ***** up Deus Ex 3 Eidos. - Tempest261, on 11/27/2007, -2/+23No Warren Spector, no $$$ (at least not mine) Eidos. Harvey totally F'ed up DE2. I couldn't touch it after playing it for an hour. And DE1 is possibly my most favorite game of all time. Get Warren back in charge.
- TotalHalibut, on 11/27/2007, -1/+22Because you played the sequel first. On it's own, DX2 is a 'solid' title, worthy of a good 6.5/7.0 out of 10. Deus Ex 1 is one of the most highly rated PC titles of all time. An 'average' sequel is not good enough.
- walkar, on 11/27/2007, -2/+22We can only hope for the best.
In the mean time, brb, reinstalling - roystgnr, on 11/27/2007, -2/+21There was a Deus Ex 2. Its creators are to this day locked in a sealed dungeon, where they are forced to subsist on New Coke and McDonald's Arch Deluxe burgers, using Windows ME to watch endless repeats of the Matrix sequels.
Lest we forget. - inactive, on 11/27/2007, -0/+16J.C. Denton better be the main playable character.
- danwallace, on 11/27/2007, -1/+17It has been a few years since I've played it, but I don't recall it being too complex at all.
- Diggtatorship, on 11/27/2007, -2/+17Delusional fanboy FTL
- Abjure, on 11/27/2007, -12/+27I'm probably one of the very few who actually liked Deus Ex 2. The only part I didn't like was the fact that it was dumbed down for consoles. Other than that I really liked the story and gameplay.
- rpapi100, on 11/27/2007, -0/+13Deus Ex represents for me the sole argument in favor of gaming. It's a never repeated iteration of the full narrative power of the format. People show the Godfather for movies or Macbeth for litterature to show the value of the format. We gamers present Deux Ex
- stoanhart, on 11/27/2007, -0/+13How? I ***** love that game. One of the greatest games I have ever played, bar none.
- nbcaffeine, on 11/27/2007, -4/+16Agreed. Not sure why everyone complains so much. Sure, the first game is better, but IW wasn't that bad.
- Dorepoll, on 11/27/2007, -0/+12I dugg the ***** out of this. While the 2nd one was inferior, the original pretty much blew my mind at the time. I never played System Shock, so RPG meets FPS was a novelty, but what I really loved was the freedom. I played that game 5 different times, 5 different ways.
I have never genuinely cared for characters as much as I have for that game. Paul was a champ. - EuphopiaB, on 11/27/2007, -4/+16Same. I got Deus Ex 2 before I researched the games I purchased and I hadn't seen a review for it. I got it on the Xbox and loved it. I beat it twice and then beat Deus Ex original on PC. I still don't know why everyone hates it. I think it might be a little groupthink. I would agree it was dumbed-down from what Deus Ex was, but to me it was still fun to play. Perhaps if I had played the original before the sequel I would be thinking otherwise.
- ApokalypseNow, on 11/27/2007, -0/+11Deus Ex: Invisible War - how it was dumbed down for consoles:
1) Universal Ammo
2) Skill system from original thrown out
3) Only 2 mods per weapon
4) Slot-based inventory system
5) No location-specific damage beyond sniper rifle (until patch, and even then only headshots for pistol), no player-based location specific damage (ie. my arm is damaged, targeting is affected)
6) Targeting bloom from original thrown out - all weapons are as accurate as they will ever be from the start.
There's more, but this ought to be a good start for you. - toastjam, on 11/27/2007, -2/+13Yeah, I haven't been able to get the hang of anything past Pong myself.
- magpulse, on 11/27/2007, -0/+11Teaser here:

Not much content but if you're a DX fan you'll get chills. - demonsnake69, on 11/27/2007, -3/+13I got a feeling Deus Ex 3 is going to suck just based off these two quotes:
According to [Eidos Montreal's general manager, Stéphane D'Astous], "We’re only working on AAA, major titles. We’re going to be developing only major AAA games, using only next-gen technology...."Some developers are really trying to push titles out the door within 12-15 months; we're working on plans for our first few titles that will only be released after 24 months."
So they're going to want Deus Ex 3 to be some sort of "blockbuster" game, and at the same time they're locking the devs into a cycle -- that means the game will be toned down for the consoles and the PC version will suck. - onwardknave, on 11/27/2007, -0/+9The original DX:IW development videos were excellent. I think Harvey Smith found himself in way over his head shortly after the game was slated for XBox. Word to Eidos: Take your time. Get it right. We want good, consistent plot -- you can even retcon DX:IW if you can't figure out how to integrate all of its compromises. We want good voice acting -- not like the voice in the promo video on IGN. We want a world which changes based on our choices -- we want real options, real thought, and some real research in the science and technology area. And we want a highly configurable multiplayer with significant input from the old development team and modding community.
- thecrazyd, on 11/27/2007, -2/+11The game performed like *****, even on top end machines at the time. The areas were small with horrendous load times. The mechanics were five steps back from the original game. If there was never an original Deus Ex, I am sure that more people would have appreciated the sequel, but as it is, it doesn't hold up at all.
- mkameli, on 11/27/2007, -1/+10I think they'd really need to reexamine the combat system. If you go back and play it today, there's a lot that could be improved upon. Deus Ex + Bioshock ftw.
- neferiousrich, on 11/27/2007, -0/+7As long as I can turn on ballistic protection, healing, and battery regen, and run around the game slicing up everyone with a dragon sword..... i'll be happy ;)
- stwobie, on 11/27/2007, -0/+7I had the extreme pleasure of being good friends with the late Jeff Groteboer, who voiced Gunther in the original game. And in those early days of Ion Storm, I was able to see Deus Ex in the pre-infancy stages, they had 1 main programmer, and he used Bryce on the only mac in the place to create many of the textures. We're talking very early on.
The game became the flagship game for Ion, but much too late, as Daikatana was an absolute flop! Eidos took back the child it had spawned off, and Deus Ex became the mega hit it was.
Jeff often told me that it would be his legacy, at the time he was unmarried, and had a 3 year old heart- his having failed at the ripe old age of 32.
I believe he never spoke truer words.
Deus Ex really brought together the best of gaming at that time, though I often found it way ahead of it's time. The ambiance, the thrill of discovery, and the use of force was always an option.
Long live Gunther! - ShatteredBlade, on 11/27/2007, -1/+7Yeah, cause obviously there is no market in the PC/360/Wii realm for this game.
/end sarcasm - Christbait, on 11/27/2007, -2/+8I love both, can't I love both?
- TotalHalibut, on 11/27/2007, -1/+7Because the first game is a complete masterpiece and nothing less than absolute perfection would have satisfied for a sequel. They should have just left the hell alone, or done a graphical revamp with some gap-filling.
- stonedgeek, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5Fingers crossed for a new Thief game too
- Slickviper, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5I love half life and I love half life 2 but they dont compare to deus ex
- EdgarVerona, on 11/27/2007, -0/+5Not even! They definately stole some gameplay elements, but in terms of plotline they were miles apart. Yes, they both had an AI in it. But Deus Ex was a plot that addressed a lot of modern day conspiracy theories as well as a feasible "not to distant future" worst case scenario for the real world. System Shock was a much more unlikely bit of Sci Fi, far more fantasy and far less historical context/references.
I enjoyed Deus Ex more than System Shock, primarily because of the historical and historical fiction driven plotline. - DocHoliday22, on 11/27/2007, -2/+7If you can afford a new PC with every new Game release...
- policewhale, on 11/27/2007, -2/+7I spilled grape soda all over my screen when I read this.
- SigmaDraconis, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4So will we get to use an actual Skul-Gun this time?
- mtrip, on 11/27/2007, -3/+7And after they've patched it twice and you've updated all of your drivers and looked past the random inevitable crashes to desktop.
- ApokalypseNow, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4I'm with you up to the multiplayer aspect - I can take or leave that. People love DX for the single player experience - the original didn't have multiplayer for some time after it was released, if you recall. If having a few people working on multiplayer will in any way detract from the single player experience, then I vote to skip it. Granted, it is difficult to make a FPS today without having some form of multiplayer, but with DX I would not be focusing on it.
- onwardknave, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4Don't forget the 7Crows team that had a big hand in writing the dialog for the game -- they really brought the world alive. A bit of info is here on their site: http://www.7crows.com/archives/2000/01/entry_28.ht ...
- onwardknave, on 11/27/2007, -1/+5Actually, Warren gave most operational control to Harvey Smith for the sequel. I'm not sure that alone was responsible for DX:IW for being a bitter, diluted, shell of a game, since Harvey did a lot of work on the original DX. The trick now is getting multiplayer to work better than it did for the original.
- stonedgeek, on 11/27/2007, -0/+4I have to agree with you there Joeshie. The original was far superior to the sequel though I still liked it very much.
Personally, I thought at the time I was playing it that DE2 was set too far in the future. What I really liked about the first game was that the locations were strongly tied to current real world locations.
I'm hoping for Deus Ex 3 to be set in between the 2 games or even before, though it would be harder to explain the physical augmentations. - TotalHalibut, on 11/27/2007, -1/+5Deus Ex pissed all over System Shock like the Boo-in-the-Closet scary little brother it was. Deus Ex thrashes it in story-line, level design, character development, weapon mechanics, replayability, difficulty and concept. Having beaten SS1+2 and Deus Ex 1+2 I cannot, even straining, think of a single thing that SS ever did better than Deus Ex and I can't imagine what kind of nutter would think otherwise.
- limezor2, on 11/27/2007, -15/+19They better not mess this up!
And by that I mean not make it for the PS3. -
