- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -0/+93This just gets worse by the day. Yes, a Maxis employee immediately contradicted the mod who said that, but they locked the thread and directed the poster to a sticky thread whose title has nothing to do with DRM. I've been keeping up with this a bit, and they are still locking threads that criticize not only the DRM, but even the game itself. These guys really shot themselves in the foot with this. There is even a class action lawsuit now. See here: http://www.simprograms.com/?p=2172
- CapEnt, on 09/24/2008, -18/+93First EA choose the most annoying DRM know by humanity for their games. After, EA cries that everybody out there are shouting at them unfairly. Finally, EA tries to silence anyone who tries to show to the world how crap their DRM is (like any DRM mechanism). Apparently their board of directors are wasting too much time with BSA/RIAA folks, i would call this "bad influence", their mothers should beat them with a wooden spoon.
- Novem30, on 09/25/2008, -1/+57The mod who made the original comments (now removed from the mod team) had this to say;

Funny how hypocritical he was willing to be about DRM for a tiny bit of power as a 'community mod' or whatever. - XFDRaven, on 09/25/2008, -2/+47So DRM is the corporate cookie to make up for bad game design? "Crap our game is boring! What are we going to do?" 'Let's load it down with DRM so that no one could play it!'
"BRILLIANT!"
Actually, why hasn't anyone made a game called DRM where the whole point is to learn how to bypass each level's DRM? - dalittle, on 09/25/2008, -1/+32I love it. This DRM is costing EA way more then they could have imagined in lost sales and bad press. Maybe they will finally wise up and drop the DRM.
- FredFredrickson, on 09/25/2008, -0/+26If only Maxis hadn't joined the EA fold... we'd not be hearing about all this DRM non-sense, and Spore would probably be a better game to boot.
- Stormwern, on 09/25/2008, -3/+24When in doubt, blame community organizing apparently..

FOR FREEDOM! - MarkusDee, on 09/25/2008, -0/+17I think one can hate both EA and Sony. It is not an either/or proposition.
- lacronicus, on 09/25/2008, -6/+22Did you even read the article? They condemned the mod that said users could be banned.
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -2/+17"Actually, why hasn't anyone made a game called DRM where the whole point is to learn how to bypass each level's DRM?"
Already done...

- presidentjapan, on 09/24/2008, -0/+13Just a bad tripup in their DRM campaign.
- jeremyduffy, on 09/25/2008, -1/+14And it serves them right too. I hope companies who are busy making games I actually want to play (cough, Starcraft 2, cough) are paying attention.
- NaziHatinChimp, on 09/25/2008, -2/+15They should've spent all the time they spent dealing with DRM on their game. Maybe more people would've bought it.
- mulling, on 09/25/2008, -0/+13It's well known that EA sucks, but this Spore debacle has shocked me at just *how much* they suck. *Golf claps*
- landmonster, on 09/25/2008, -1/+14It seems to me that in all the hoo-ha about DRM and censorship people are overlooking the fact that the game is a load of tedious ***** which gets so boring after about 2 days you never want to play it again, let alone install it on another computer.

- supertom, on 09/25/2008, -3/+15"How do I get diggers to digg my comment?
Ooh I know, I'll post an ascii pic from 4chan!" - Jhiaxuz, on 09/25/2008, -0/+11The same reason people are hush hush about RFID vulnerabilities I would imagine.
- kurtwinter, on 09/25/2008, -0/+10This is an illusion to get us believe that Spore is a good game crippled by DRM.
- bagboyrebel, on 09/25/2008, -0/+9no, EA is evil for treating the people who already purchased their product like criminals.
- fluxion, on 09/25/2008, -0/+8"D - R - M.
it's in the game." - inactive, on 09/25/2008, -0/+8http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4375656/Spore-RELO ...
- tumbler360, on 09/25/2008, -0/+8Seems like EA wanted to see what happens if they shut down forums discussion, and it slapped them back pretty hard and they backed off. EA is looking for someway to make people happy with the DRM and so far it's not working.
Don't buy anything in the future that uses this limited activation crap. Play other stuff. We have to stop buying their stuff. - robEstyles, on 09/25/2008, -0/+8It's not just to keep from Pirating which obviously as you can see doesn't work. It's for ***** companies like EA to pretty much make the re-sale value of the game 0 cause no body else can use it. They lose tons of money in the second hand videogame market (GameStop etc.) and DRM is another way to stop that.
- chazuk, on 09/25/2008, -0/+7In other news?
- robEstyles, on 09/25/2008, -0/+7I agree with you. I'm just saying the company's stand on DRM is more than just piracy.
- TheLichKing, on 09/25/2008, -0/+7Well you play with the devil, that's what you get...
- waspbr, on 09/25/2008, -1/+8too little too late?

- fluxion, on 09/25/2008, -1/+7he's a douchebag....UNLESS he was telling the truth about being instructed to say those things.
id imagine there is some truth to it....but who knows.
otherwise its rather ironic that, after being a forum nazi, he's dedicating himself to causing a ruckus - sHockz, on 09/25/2008, -1/+7EA, pissing people off everyday!
- wunksta, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6whats the number one rule of business?
you do not piss off your customer base - ociris, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6when i buy a game, its mine forever. Imagine if diablo 2 and StarCraft had DRM which only allowed 3 installs.... Its been a little over 10 years now, and i've gone through 4 computers and a few laptops. I may not install Spore in 3 computers this month, but i will eventually do it. Just because you can play it now, doesnt mean it is not a problem. If i legally paid for a product, i should have access to that product as often as i want to as long as i legally own it.
- inactive, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6Bypassing the DRM is insanely easy; it's leaving it intact and trying to play legitimately that's a challenge.
- ErickStevenson, on 09/25/2008, -0/+6Let's all hope for the best.
- pigfister, on 09/25/2008, -1/+7EA skirts first-sale doctrine with limits on resale of Spore
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080925-ea-s ...
While much of the buzz about Spore has revolved around the DRM and now the lawsuit, what's important to remember is that the DRM isn't in place just to "fight" pirates. No, the activation limit and the one-account system are also strong deterrents against selling your copy of the game; EA would much rather everyone bought it instead of taking part in a second-hand market. As one Ars reader found out, buying the game used may be a risky proposition. The question is open: is EA breaking the law?
According to the buyer, his copy of the game was purchased from "a crotchety old redneck," but the buyer didn't get the necessary information needed to get into the game's main account, and thus couldn't play. A call to customer support was no help; sellers have to give the purchaser the account name and password, almost like a World of Warcraft account. Unless buyers get that information from the person or store they get the used game from, nothing can be done. EA will not let you open another account.
The portion of the game's EULA that deals with sales is interesting; the company technically allows it, but EA won't make it easy on you. "You may not be able to transfer the right to receive updates, dynamically served content, or the right to use any online service of EA in connection with the Software," the agreement states. "You may not be able to transfer the Software if you have already exhausted the terms of this License by authenticating the Software on the allowed number machine [sic]. Subsequent recipients of this License may not be able to authenticate the Software on additional machines."
Could EA get into legal trouble by limiting the "first sale" doctrine, or is the company just trying to annoy you into not trying to sell the game? We brought the question to Fred von Lohmann of the Electronic Frontier Foundation to find out. - bagboyrebel, on 09/25/2008, -1/+6Yeah, but we actually have reasons to hate EA and Sony.
- PhishednPA, on 09/25/2008, -0/+5you people dont understand, this game isnt for "Hardcore gamers" that will even care about the DRM, Maxis has said this game is more for the causal then the hardcore, the average person who picks it up at a wal-mart isnt going to know or care about the DRM.
and those people who are saying the game isnt selling is on crack, its already sold 1 million copies and thats even with all the "Bad DRM press" looks like all press is good press. - toxicityj, on 09/25/2008, -0/+5I don't get the DRM thing at all. the point is that DRM is meant to keep people from pirating the game, right? But within DAYS people find a way around the DRM. So why do they even bother? They're wasting a ton of money on something that nobody wants.
- VigRoco, on 09/25/2008, -0/+5Or the DRM game could be about making games that are impossible to install and then selling them to customers
Call it: 'DRM Empire' - protogenxl, on 09/25/2008, -1/+5EA forbids discussion of DRM and Apple forbids discussion of Rejection Letters
They should merge so they can get Synergy. - Fhwqhgads, on 09/25/2008, -1/+5why pay for a copy and support EA?
- wafflesomd, on 09/25/2008, -4/+8Just torrent it and shut up.
- bagboyrebel, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4well they're also going to use the same thing in the new C&C game, is that one casual?
- bagboyrebel, on 09/25/2008, -0/+4go to jail? You're new to the internet, aren't you?
- 2Bnor2B, on 09/25/2008, -0/+31. Steam games do not limit installs, just the opposite. You can have the games loaded on as many machines that you want.
2. If you purchase the Orange box and already had some of the games, you were allowed to give the unused copy as a gift.
3. Stream is not a intrusive as SecuRom. It does not scan your computer looking for disk emulators etc..
http://store.steampowered.com/about/
Steam = online chat tool, update manager, only runs if you start it.
SecuRom = secretive, intrusive, runs in background all the time, difficult to remove, borders on spyware. Got in big trouble in the past for the use of rootkits.
Valve = a company responsive to users with a high loyalty
EA = a company with little relationships to users, who use their influence push ads in games, limited activations and microtransations. They force the developer to release titles that incomplete or a dumbed down shadow of the game's potential. They have one the worst customer loyalty ratings in the industry. They listen more to their internal marketing people then their customers. - GRTWHT, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3And that's the problem InfernoX.
- FredFredrickson, on 09/25/2008, -0/+3Somebody had to do it.
