- SuperKewlGirl, on 10/01/2008, -0/+70EA has looked really bad in this whole situation
- Darksoul, on 10/01/2008, -4/+42That's the hole problem once you buy it its your ***** software you own it their point of view is your renting it from them which is ***** you didn't pay fourty to six bucks to rent anything. They really need to get their head out of their asses.
- geenope, on 10/02/2008, -7/+35Spore sucks anyway.
- ErickStevenson, on 10/02/2008, -0/+23is the TOS written on the box? If it is fine, but if I see it only when I am installing then you are still being ripped off. You can't return it because it's software.
- kingmanic, on 10/02/2008, -1/+22How to re-enact playing spore, only richer and deeper:
1- Play flOw for exactly 5 minutes
2- Play WoW for 15 min
3- Play Warcraft 3 for 20 min
4- Play Risk for 45 min
5- Play sins of a solar empire for 4 hours
There, you've played spore. - JMilton, on 10/02/2008, -4/+24"Thanks to DRM, Spore may well be the most downloaded game of all time, if not now, then in the next month."
Nah, I'd say it's the most pirated game because of all the hype it generated before the official release. The DRM scheme just made the legit customers pirates, so they can enjoy the game without online verifications. - Nosferotu, on 10/02/2008, -0/+18They can say whatever they want, it doesn't change the reality of the situation, which is that they are shooting themselves in the foot here. Pirates don't lose anything by pirating the game, only their customers are being hurt, and in the future will be more willing to pirate rather than put up with their ***** DRM. The only person REALLY hurt by all this is EA - if they don't want to face up to that, it's their own loss.
- V1ncent, on 10/02/2008, -0/+16Copy Protection does not work and has been proven to impact sales negatively. It's time software companies spent less time on copy protection schemes that will be bypassed even before software goes gold and more time on creating a good bug-free game that is worth the prices they charge!
- dchaosdx, on 10/02/2008, -1/+16the game sucked after the 40 minutes it took to get to space. i'm glad i "went to my friends house that bought the game and play on his account to test it out before i went and threw 50 bucks down the drain".
- LoveYouSomeEric, on 10/02/2008, -1/+15actually you agree to that upon installation, at which point it is impossible to return the product.
- dsting, on 10/02/2008, -1/+15I think there were 40,000 people downloading it just from one torrent.
- carnivore0311, on 10/02/2008, -0/+13I was actually going to buy spore until i found out about the DRM. Sorry EA.
- jla1987, on 10/02/2008, -0/+13Agreed. It's not even worth pirating and is an EPIC FAIL on all levels. Sadly, the DRM crap makes reselling it impossible...
- dalittle, on 10/02/2008, -0/+12DRM is all about money. EA paid big money to have DRM put in Spore, and now they are going to pay really big money in lost sales and lawyers. When the accountants are done, DRM will be a big fail for EA's bottom line and that will cause them to change what they are doing. Not that I care much though as the minute I know that EA is involved, I generally re-consider my purchase as I know the game will be hamstrung, dumbed down, or DRM'd to death.
- Lungkisser, on 10/02/2008, -0/+12I mean, it was out on thepiratebay before release in-stores, already cracked and ready to play, yet when it came out in retail actual consumers were treated negatively, with limited installations and activations. That's criminal.
- kweee, on 10/02/2008, -2/+14I don't even want to play the game and I still might pirate it.
- sn0wmis3r, on 10/02/2008, -0/+11Agreed, take away all the drm issues and everything. Still a terribly boring game.
- NinjaSeg, on 10/02/2008, -0/+11"We’ve talked to people that made several unsuccessful attempts to download the game and ended up with incomplete, slow, buggy or unusable code."
I successfully paid $50 at Wal-Mart for Spore and ended up with incomplete, slow, buggy and unusable code.
And the patch only made it worse... - enclaved, on 10/02/2008, -0/+9stop thinking like a tool, tool. you can't agree to something before you buy it that they didn't tell you about until after you buy it.
- palehorse864, on 10/02/2008, -0/+9Hmmm, I do think their DRM policy effected their large piracy problem.
- drachemorder, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8TOS = terms of service. EA is not providing a service, they're providing a product. The only thing that might count as a "service" is the content-sharing feature, which is not necessary to play the game. You buy a PRODUCT, you can do whatever you want to with it (with the exception, of course, being anything prohibited by copyright law --- but so long as you aren't distributing copies, copyright law has no jurisdiction.)
You buy a copy, you own that copy. Period. - jengerer, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8"Yeah, let's dig our own grave deeper by insulting the intelligence of the people who downloaded the game instead of dealing with the issue that may have brought them to that end."
What kind of idiots do they take us for? They said some of the downloaded copies were "unsuccessful" and had "buggy code". How is that possible, if it's the same build of the game? - Radan, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8What I really don't get is how come about EVERYONE who has ever used a computer understands this, but not the boons at EA who are paid professionals.
- ironhide, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8Heh, I actually picked up a copy of Spore at a local Goodwill for a buck. The auth. key hadn't even been used.
- drachemorder, on 10/02/2008, -0/+8Absolutely. I own a legitimate copy, complete with game disk and manual and everything. That copy has never been inserted into my drive, because I refuse to tolerate the DRM. So maybe in an absolutely technical sense I'm a pirate, but I haven't deprived EA of a sale in any form or fashion.
- jla1987, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7I may just pirate it to spite EA at some point though...
They don't deserve any money for this game. - emotecontrol, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7So now we have proof that DRM causes piracy.
When will they learn that we don't enjoy being dicked around? - enclaved, on 10/02/2008, -2/+9dur my name is achalemoipas and i don't have a clue.
- clickwir, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7I think DRM is only half the story. To be honest. I stopped playing the game when I realized that all the "creature" hype only makes up about 5% of total game play. The rest is some spacey flying around taking over worlds and selling spice crap. WTF is this? This isn't SPORE.
- Scrappy1850, on 10/02/2008, -0/+7is your friend named Thepiratebay and does he live on internet st?
- aladrin, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6lol You almost got the grammar nazi in me to come play. Nicely done.
- CNAIF, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6One thing DRM has done for me, it's made me stop with the impulsive game buy during the first week of release.
I now wait before purchase so I can find out if it's infested with anything, DRM, massive bugs, unfinished product etc etc.
I started doing this after the Sony rootkit fiasco. I was a big pc game buyer, I no longer am. - ahhell, on 10/02/2008, -0/+6WTF?
Why in the ***** would anyone want an "itunes like" pc authorization system? You bought the ***** thing why should you have to be "authorized to play it". - statrick, on 10/02/2008, -1/+7all this crap made me not even want the game.
im going to play wii bowling - qbthemc, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5EA you of all companies shouldn't even speak on this issue.
- FalconJones, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5"That's the hole problem..."
Really? It was spelled correctly one post above yours... - Sirocco, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5All the Dude ever wanted was his rug back.
- elitebmo, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5"The download did not lead to a lost sale - the lost sale lead to a download."
Ya i'd DEFFINATELY agree there. - greevar, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5Skip 1-4 and go directly to 5 and you have a much better experience than Spore.
- tonaros, on 10/02/2008, -0/+5Nice one. So you get to use your legit CD Key and go online and everything, but just bypass the DRM. Props.
- ExRe, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4It did have a lot of hype. I was planning on buying it before I read some of the articles about it. Because of the horrible DRM and bad reviews I decided to grab a copy from the torrents instead and am damned glad I did. I haven't played the game more than an hour or two.
- john2kx, on 10/02/2008, -1/+5I downloaded it, seeded it, and deleted it..
I think I was averaging about 175 kbps up over a period of about a week. - VinnieDaMac, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4If they really believed this: "BitTorrent download doesn’t represent a successful copy of a game, let alone a lost sale." Then piracy wouldn't even be an issue.
- drachemorder, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4I do not respect EULAs. I respect only laws and morals, and neither of those say anything about having to abide by restrictions after buying something.
Guess what? I do not agree to those restrictions, I do not abide by those restrictions, in fact I've probably broken several of them --- not really sure, because I simply don't care what they are. As long as I'm not violating copyright law by distributing copies (which I'm not) then EA has absolutely no right whatsoever to restrict what I do with my own property in my own home on my own computer. And I thoroughly resent and condemn their attempts to do so. - fattony89, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4it would be nice if the average consumer knew about all this, how EA have tried and failed to spin their ridiculous DRM, yet i doubt they will.
- aladrin, on 10/02/2008, -1/+5They're claiming that they weren't the same version, obviously. Some 'pirate' copies come from betas or release candidates... but most come from retail discs or gold masters.
But hell, if they're willing to slap DRM on there and insult all their customers, why not lie, too? - Cerialthriller, on 10/02/2008, -0/+4the LHC could create a hole problem
- palehorse864, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Yay got one *reels him in*
Heh, the gag is that affected means 'had an effect on', while effected can mean 'created'. Either would work in the sentence, but in different ways. - solidcube, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3If anything the DRM flap was GOOD for Spore because it kind of presupposes that the game is worth having. This game is NOT worth having. It's a terrible, shallow piece of garbage. Not worth the download. I was all set to go out and blow $50 on it and then I thought "hmm, I had better go over to my friend's house to check out the game." Boy, I'm sure glad I have that friend, and that I didn't give my money to EA for yet another ***** sight-unseen purchase. I guess I finally learned my lesson after ***** game #41341234.
- fzammetti, on 10/02/2008, -0/+3All of this crap is so much sadder for us older geeks who remember EA from the days of Mail Order Monsters, Realm of Impossibility, One on One, Archon and Boulder Days back on the Commodore 64 and Atari 8-bit computers. I remember all the time I wasted on those games, and I loved every minute of it and thought EA was a great company. I know things "evolve" and change, but I can't believe this is the same company that used to (seemingly anyway) be so great. Very sad indeed if you lived those bygone days as I did.
