- Topher06, on 01/31/2009, -6/+78Why is this being dugg up. You are going to go to a store, walk up to some dork in a Best Buy uniform and say "I am here to tell you I am not buying this game which has DRM on it." and then walk out? You think they give a rat's ass what you think?
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+58If I want to play Quake 2 I take the CD, install it, PLAY IT.
In 10 years if I wanted to play any DRM'd game of today, I would take the CD, stare at it and do nothing, because the activation process is no longer available and the game is expired.
>>>>> I refuse to pay full retail price for a game rental. <<<<< - techtock, on 01/31/2009, -5/+60Actually, it's not a DRM issue: http://digg.com/pc_games/VP_of_Epic_Games_Responds ...
Though I do agree, DRM is trash. - inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+50GTA 4 is already broken on PC.
- grungegbunny, on 01/31/2009, -0/+37DRM is anti-consumer.
- CoD4, on 01/31/2009, -0/+34a better idea would be to email those ea cox suckers
- noipv4, on 01/31/2009, -2/+34Sorry, you have driven your car 100,000 miles. Please buy a new car!
- THUORN, on 01/31/2009, -0/+28this is just brilliant... i mean that. you see its STUPID decisions like this that produce backlashes and continue to show legitimate consumers the disdain that the content providers have for them. i am also willing to bet that crackers will have a workaround for this as quickly or quicker than microsoft.
- SOS84, on 01/31/2009, -2/+26Solution.
1. Buy the boxed (broken) copy of the game.
2. Put it in a box in the closet.
3. Download a copy of the game.
4. Play the game that is not broken.
5. Problem solved.
DRM is not meant to stop or contain piracy, period. What it is meant to do is destroy the market for used games so that the legitimate customers are forced to pay retail prices for boxed copies. - CrazySpaniard, on 01/31/2009, -10/+33http://www.thepiratebay.org
- Billistic, on 01/31/2009, -0/+22If you own an xbox/xbox live account you're already in DRM hell.
Did you know if you were to move to a new country you cannot keep your live account? That means all your achievements, your halo 3 stats, your content add-ons are basically left in the country you were from and you have to start all over. - CNAIF, on 01/31/2009, -0/+17This DRM debacle is really starting to look like a determined effort to destroy PC gaming for console gaming.
- CrazySpaniard, on 01/31/2009, -0/+16We’ve just discovered that the pirated ‘razor1911′ release is also affected, meaning that it’s taken down every copy available.
l2article - EmperorAwesome, on 01/31/2009, -0/+12I'm really hoping Valve stays in business for at least another 60 years.
- vagarach, on 01/31/2009, -2/+13So this problem has nothing at all to with DRM, but people are using this as a platform to call for a stop to all DRM?
- doctordbx, on 01/31/2009, -1/+12I like that, the guy basically admits they ***** up and will fix it.
Refreshing instead of blaming others. - Billistic, on 01/31/2009, -0/+11I know more about it:
http://www.qtzar.com/blogs/qtzar.nsf/d6plinks/DLYH ...
Try for yourself, go into your settings for billing and see if you can change the country field. It's static.
The worst is they set my country based on my hotmail account which I made when I was 18, that was 10 years ago.
When I called them regarding this their only answer is "We can't change your country." Xbox escalations called called me and even they can't do anything about it. Their basic fix was to create a second live account, which I could download the new halo 3 maps with.
This worked fine and dandy until recently when I got the Red ring of death.
After a few weeks I got my new console with a new serial number, I had to use Microsoft's license transfer tool to sync my live account to my new xbox (this is stupid as well).
However my second account that I created for credit card use to purchase halo maps is not tied to the new console, therefore I could not apparently play halo3 maps that were on my hard drive and that I had played a few weeks before (With proof since i have videos of me playing extra map content on my file share).
So I had to give up my first live account and now have to play Fallout 3 all over again and then download it's expansion packs. This also means I have to play Halo3 and get back up to my 35 rank with 850 XP.
This is no joke, it's honestly how bad their DRM system is, in this day and age I don't understand how they could have ***** up the logistics of live so badly. - wolferz, on 01/31/2009, -0/+10more like piracy 2151324 DRM 4
but it should be noted this is not a point in favor for ether of them. - FLUX, on 01/31/2009, -0/+10I have to disable spyware doctor with antivirus to play crysis because the drm sees spyware doctor as emulation software and will not let the game run
if the drm expires I will definitely be looking to join the class action law suit that will follow - dizam, on 01/31/2009, -3/+13Ain't related, but ***** THE RIAA
and this is sorta amusing : http://www.*****.com/ - Syraxis, on 01/31/2009, -6/+16Until the developer closes down.
- BooLag, on 04/23/2009, -12/+21Steps 3-5 are sufficient...
- bigbangbuddha, on 01/31/2009, -0/+9I'm a veteran game dev, and I hate DRM too. Its a waste because it punishes and hassles the fans out there while only making it mildly inconvenient for those who really wish to pirate software. But I'm also pissed off that I work for two years on a great project just to see it given away for free; that's my @#!%art dammit; I bled to make it.
Apple figured out a better way to deal with this in music (finally) with fingerprinting so that if it does leak its easier to track it back to the originator; while not a perfect solution it beats the crap out of what they were doing. We need more ideas like this. Steam is a great software solution and instead of punishing users it enhances the experience allowing for easy access to ones library. These are the right ways to deal with DRM, locking out users based on their mac address, time bombs, or forcing them to ping a server is NOT. - DeathRay2K, on 01/31/2009, -1/+10Actually, ktetch, it's the cheat-detection for online that caused the problem.
- BooLag, on 04/23/2009, -2/+10More like until there are no more seeds...
- tgc1, on 01/31/2009, -2/+10I hate to say this, because some may take great offense to it. But this kind of thing just goes to show how stupid and mislead people have become over issues like this. Let's get things straight, DRM does not help you, the customer, at all. Not in any way. If you know, full well, that there is DRM on a game and you buy it anyway, then you are a moron. I'm sorry to say that. Again, it's hard to put that any other way without making it seem like i'm going out of my way to insult people. But you have to give your head a shake.
If I told you that there was this really cool car, but you could only drive it if it called home first, and that the dealership who sold you it would have to authorize you to drive it... would you buy it? Dont' answer that question. I know there's just another group of idiots who would buy it "Because it's cool."
Until people flat out REFUSE to purchase games with DRM on them, the makers of these games are not going to get the hint. If you buy a game with DRM on it, and they ***** you out of the ability to play it, then YOU ARE THE IDIOT. Quit buying these games. Let the makers know that you will not tolerate this kind of *****. Otherwise everything is going to become DRM crippled.
"We're sorry, I cannot heat a new piece of toast. Your daily quota of 4 slices has been reached. Please try again tomorrow."
"'We're sorry, You cannot turn this light on, it has reached its daily allowable light limit. Please try again tomorrow."
"We're sorry, but this door cannot be unlocked. You have already come in and out of the house once today. Please try to come in again tomorrow"
"Car ignition sequence failed. Could not establish connection to manufacturer. Please try again."
Are you starting to get the hint? - spiffyfitz, on 01/31/2009, -0/+7I like to download a pirated copy of the game to demo it. If it's a crappy game then I'll just uninstall it and forget it, but if it's a decent game that I know I'm going to play a lot, then I buy it on Steam. Piracy lets me figure out which games don't suck.
- Darkaged, on 01/31/2009, -0/+7I'm so angry, I am going to write a strongly-worded letter!
- lcmatt, on 01/31/2009, -0/+7It's nothing to do with DRM. The games borked because of the anti-cheat detection signatures being out of date.
- Pixelante, on 01/31/2009, -0/+7"Open the pod bay doors, HAL."
"Sorry, Dave, I can't do that." - punkcat, on 01/31/2009, -1/+7are you sure telling a part time teenage worker isn't the best way to reach the execs?
- DustinHill, on 01/31/2009, -2/+7I agree with Topher. Those guys making slightly over minimum wage won't care at all about why you won't buy something. But let's assume that they did. Do you think that they or their managers (still assuming that all of the people care about you righteous cause) could contact a major publisher in any meaningful way? If you do, then you are plainly ignorant in terms of how all of this really works. What you're suggesting is something akin to yelling at a meter maid because our economy is in a downward spiral.
@CoD4 That's actually a great idea. I emailed Mark Rein last night explaining how upset and disappointed I was in Epic for using DRM like this and within an hour I had a personal response from him. Since (as far as I know) there hasn't been an official release dictating why this has happened I won't spill it here. But it had nothing to do with the DRM. Epic did make a mistake, but it wasn't with the DRM. The truth should surface soon from Epic, but I doubt that story will get very popular. - Tantrum, on 01/31/2009, -1/+6DRM only hurts the customers who PAY for a product, it never hurts the software pirates. In fact the pirates are still playing Gears of War right now when people who paid for the product can't. DRM as far as I'm concerned is justification for piracy. Had i known Gears PC had DRM in it, i would have pirated it instead of giving Epic my money, I certainly won't do that again !
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+5WTF!!!!!!!!!
- Ravatar, on 01/31/2009, -2/+7Any DRM that shuts off access to legimate users is _broken_. I fail to see how "it wasn't with the DRM" seeing as the DRM is what's shutting the game off.
Despite the fact they're blaming a bad signature or date problem, the game itself is shutting down after failing a check in the DRM. - Heiminator, on 01/31/2009, -0/+5are you serious? didn't know about that, i might move from germany to ireland next year and i expected this to be like wow, just log in from wherever i am,as long as i pay the bills
does anyone know more about this? - cqdemal, on 01/31/2009, -1/+6That's probably more of a fault on your side. Game never caused me any trouble at all save for sharp swings in FPS that can be eliminated by using an FPS cap utility.
- Ahnteis, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4Um.. install the game and just download the crack. Why waste time downloading all the content that you already have on the disc?
- Heiminator, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4thanks for enlightening me billistic,i didn't know how complicated easy ***** can get...
- beerhound, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4The same people that are burying others who missed the fact that the expired certificate is in the cheat detection, not the DRM. Probably not fair to do a "RTFA" type bury in this thread because the article referenced by the OP blames it on DRM, the part about the cheat detection was in a post linked from one of the comments in the thread. That also explains why the cracked copies that have the DRM removed aren't working either.
- Fredie007, on 01/31/2009, -7/+11And people who have actually downloaded a pirated copy won't have this problem. It's like an inversed world.
- Meocross, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4And the wonder why the ***** we pirate? that is just blasphemy Billistic.
- gamerzworld, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4Halo 2's certificate expired in 7/5/2008 but it's still playable. It's most likely due to something Epic forgot to disable.
- EvilFerret, on 02/01/2009, -0/+3Perhaps if you even bothered to click that link, you'd realize it had nothing to do with anti-piracy measures......
- Konrad9, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3Securom is the software that doesn't let me play the game I have paid for, LEGALLY PURCHASED AT A STORE, because it doesn't like other software I'm running.
I have the ***** CD I exchanged legal tender for in my ***** computer and that piece of ***** DRM says I'm not allowed to play my game.
DRM will be the death of the people who put it on their products. - fandyllic, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3Couldn't digg due to non-credible source, but good pointer.
To Epic Games: Learn2QA
This one of the most obvious and testable errors in the universe. If a game company were to make medical equipment we'd all be dead. - pheyze, on 01/31/2009, -1/+4Why should honest consumers need to go through the hassle of buying a physical copy AND downloading a digital copy? That makes very little sense and only punishes those people.
- DuMbGuM, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3I would... but they never released that GOW 2 model I was after.
- Meocross, on 02/01/2009, -0/+3Changing pc date will screw up more things than help the situation, i think most of you know this, i shouldnt gimp my entire computer just to fix one program.
- Gobuchul, on 01/31/2009, -0/+3Well, if setting your date back makes the game work again, you might solve your question about other games by simply setting the date to the future, can't you?
