- ArthurSucks, on 12/31/2007, -1/+50Lets face it, Any company has got to be high not to take advantage of distributing through BitTorrent or other shared hosting solution.
- mrloco, on 12/31/2007, -0/+42I just wonder if they will be happy when people "promote" the full game through BT.
If it ever comes out that is. - Scrappy1850, on 12/31/2007, -2/+38why do you always sign your comments? we can see at the top that you posted it.
- Shrubber, on 12/31/2007, -5/+36Jeez. As EatingPie said, I have no clue how (or why, really) 3D Realms manages to stay in business. How does 3D Realms even earn income? Maybe six or seven years ago, the employees thought to themselves, "You know what? We're never going to be able to finish this game. Let's not even try. You know what we should do? Take advantage of our reputation for once, and use the company as a front for a drug-running operation. Yeah. . . that's it!"
*Ahem* Not that I'm making accusations or anything. . .. :) - inactive, on 12/31/2007, -0/+26They should work on seeding their development team so maybe they can actually produce a game.
- Hale, on 12/31/2007, -0/+24Yeah, they don't have any income at all..

- altodarknight, on 12/31/2007, -1/+17Using bittorrent to distribute the video wouldn't save them money. More often than not, trailers/teasers are released to major online media outlets for distribution. The media outlets like this because they can charge for HD downloads of the trailers and get more revenue from advertising. In fact, what they should have done was look to a media outlet like 1up or IGN and sold a limited exclusive on the trailer. This is quite common in the industry and they might actually make some money of DNF.
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -4/+20Who downloads trailers, legal or illegal? These shmucks do realize that gamespot, ign, and 1up give it for free, and gameTRAILERS gives it in HD for free?
- dunezone, on 12/31/2007, -0/+15Prey and Max Payne, plus they license the Duke Nukem franchise to mobile devices and such. Plus even though they've taken years to develop Duke Nukem Forever they made a crap load during its hey day and they could've easily invested that money into anything and just been building off of interest and the other franchises. 3d Realms is also a private company so they can do whatever they want with their capital, even things not even related to gaming.
- Tippis, on 12/31/2007, -3/+16You mean like Opera does? ;)
- whahaa, on 12/31/2007, -0/+11i choose 'not'.
- Sedako, on 12/31/2007, -0/+113D Realms is a publisher above all else. They develop some games in-house though.
- iceman0113, on 12/31/2007, -1/+11Here's the trailer at youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWuteFLUPSY
the torrent: http://www.mininova.org/tor/1054025 - bradym80, on 12/31/2007, -0/+9They only know how to distribute stuff by BBS and CD's in PC Gamer.
- FredSpeaking, on 12/31/2007, -0/+9Not sure if you've ever seen Blizzard's update software (Bittorrent) for WoW -- even my grandma can patch her MMO addiction with that.
- Tippis, on 12/31/2007, -0/+8Depends on the engine, really.
UnrealEngine has been capable of both ever since UE2.0 came out, 5 years ago... granted, if you wanted the kind of detail that is shown in the teaser, it would require some pretty well-tweaked, non-dynamic systems, and you'd run at roughly 2fps ;) - Protoss, on 12/31/2007, -0/+8Not yet, but something will come along in the next 10 years...
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -0/+7Nukem
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -1/+8Pre-rendered means it is ray-traced aka not in-engine. Smoke simulation (from Duke's cigar), and volumetric shadows (cast by the fan above Duke) are a few of the give-aways.
- whahaa, on 12/31/2007, -0/+7DNF? i'm still waiting for the new Commander Keen!
- yournamehere, on 12/31/2007, -0/+7They DIDNT make PREY. they PUBLISHED PREY, big difference.
Human Head Studios made PREY.
http://www.2kgames.com/index.php?p=games&title=pre ... - tidu, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6not to mention at most a day after a trailer is released it's put on youtube.
also, no one would exclusively use BT... but 50% of users using that instead of their servers would be great for saving money - inactive, on 12/31/2007, -0/+6"What are you waiting for? Christmas? "
- sp0rk, on 12/31/2007, -1/+7No? The difference between alpha and beta has absolutely nothing to do with who is testing the product. You fail miserably at trying to be a smartass.
- smek2, on 12/31/2007, -3/+8"The PC game ‘Duke Nukem Forever’ has been in production for 10 years" -- STOP saying that. One must be very naive to actually believe this game still is really in production. This "teaser" they just released is poor looking crap. I felt ashamed for them just by seeing it. And what kind of delusional freak is George Broussard anyway? Releasing some poor quality media every now and then (remember that "screenshot" sized in thumbnail resolution?) and then acting like "oh that? oh thats nothing really, that's just an actual in game screenshot of duke standing in a hallway. are you excited? please tell me you still care, please"
- solidhubris, on 01/01/2008, -0/+5Since this game was announced, I graduated high school, finished my BS in Economics and Math, Got an MBA in Finance and Accounting and wrapping up my PhD in Econometrics. I fell in love twice, got married and have a kid old enough that I play video games with her. Jesus ***** Christ.
- damndj, on 12/31/2007, -2/+7Not sure why this is even close to being news. The trailer wasn't that great and after all this time they couldn't come up with something better? This is filed under the Who Gives a ***** pile.
- ArthurSucks, on 12/31/2007, -1/+6Who the hell said anything about illegal?
- bunit03057, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4I think he just really likes pie.
- p51d007, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4I don't know what is more sad.......the fact they still believe that it has been in production for 10 years, or, if god forbid they actually release it, thinking there will countless suckers that actually buy it. Wait a minute.......yeah, they'll buy it :(
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -0/+4Its somewhat possible that UE can fake volumetric shadows, although I doubt it, but there's no way any current engine is capable of that kind of detailed smoke simulation in real time. Notice how the smoke reacts to Duke's geometry, that kind of calculation would only be possible (in-engine) with a parallel physics processor.
- yournamehere, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4I can tell you have low self esteem since you need to call attention to the obvious.
- inactive, on 12/31/2007, -2/+6Prey proves they can still finish a game well.
- Betrayer, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4Why would they spend money on mainstream media FOR A PRODUCT THATS NOT REAL.
- dsmx, on 12/31/2007, -1/+5Maybe companies will realise by then that people who torrent games wouldn't of bought the legitimate product in the first place.
- altodarknight, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4Talk like that stops creativity. It's defeatist. There are always many ways to improve things. I can think of one major issue, lack of sharing. It has a reliance on the few to serve the many. There are ways this could be improved.
- AngelicRaver, on 01/01/2008, -0/+4They work on Valve time
http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time - AngelicRaver, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3Psh.. 10 years and we get a video :) In 30 we may have a real game.
- AngelicRaver, on 01/01/2008, -0/+3lol
- nightstar, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3Rather wait for any new Shadow Warrior version...
- treed, on 12/31/2007, -0/+3Originally, all beta tests were closed. Only in the last few years has "beta" become a way for a company to get their users to test their software.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life ... - postal21, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2Im fairly sure George Broussard has always said that they develop the game still completely out of his pocket. Publishers offer money to get the game out the door, but he has so much invested that its not even worth the ammount they give out. Heres hoping it doesnt suck and he and 3drealms can recoup.
- antdude, on 12/31/2007, -0/+2And Digg gives links to other places too.
- altodarknight, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2Well, they had a video 6 and a half years ago, so...
- spawnfree, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2http://www.somethingawful.com/d/video-game-article ...
as they point out, the trailer contains no trace of any viable art assets beyond 4 or so models.
there is a truck in the background that has hexagonal wheels, probably made 6 or more years ago.
Where are these people getting their funding from? is it from the same gullible investors that lost their money to the Phantom game console scam? - Betrayer, on 01/01/2008, -0/+2the game will not release; unless its made by a Fanboy, like the latest "forever" video we saw..
- Makaveli604, on 01/02/2008, -0/+1Except, a free means does.. And you don't even get the full game, just single player..
- TxAggie08, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1Ok so I used to work for a Best Buy across the street from ID software and near where the 3d realms guys are. This guy came in to buy Doom 3 for his kid just after it launched. The guy asked me what I thought about Doom 3 and HL2, and I told him. He then asked me what I thought about Duke Nukem Forever. I told him that would probably come out just after the company went bankrupt. The guy got all pissed and told me that the company was in no danger of goin bankrupt, and he should know because he owned it. He also said Duke Nukem would be out soon and would look better than either Doom 3 or HL2. Well I guess we were both right, because its NEVER coming out, and for the foreseeable future his company isn't going under.
- altodarknight, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1These aren't give aways though. Yes these things weren't possible originally at any sort of high quality in the unreal 2 engine, but that isn't to say they aren't now. This game has been in development so long the unreal 2 engine is probably unrecognizable. Just look at what they did with splinter cell. That has always used the unreal 2 engine (apart from the latest installment, I'm unsure of that) and they have done some crazy things that the original unreal 2 engine would have wet it's pants if it thought it had to do it. .
Remember, ray-traced is part of an engine, whether it be part of a 3DS Max engine or any other 3D package and there is no reason why it couldn't be used in a realtime situation. I might have been but I haven't studied any particular engine in detail enough to see if ti includes this shawdowing method. -
