  • iota, on 12/01/2007, -0/+21I'm shocked that no one has mentioned Quake... In 1996, the ability to go underwater (and get a watery effect processed in software) was unheard of in games.

    Plus, it's the only game that I've ever played which featured physically impossible water that the player could jump into, swim around in, then drop down out of and look up to from below (enterance to the E4 slipgate from the "main menu")

  • tschau, on 12/01/2007, -1/+19I absolutely agree... it was the water that made that game. I rode around for hours just playing in the beautiful waves. It was fun to jump off the jumps, but so much more satisfying with the waves. That game had the feel of the water near perfect, just as I'd have to say its contemporary 1080 Snowboarding really captured the feel of the snow.

Why are we "comparing" 2D water effects to 3D water effects in this article? And why are some games that were hardly revolutionary in their water effects included? How about games like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance that had the smoothest water effects on the PS2?

    As a side note, they should have included the Nature tests from 3D Mark, those have always impressed me - from 2001 through to 2006.

    I was around 10 at the time so that was a real treat haha. Good times...
