2007 Mod of the Year Winners
moddb.com — The 2007 Mod of the Year Awards Players Choice winners have been announced, capping off a great year in gaming. This year titles which were influenced by the War in Iraq fared well, with Half-Life 2, Battlefield 2 and the GPL'd ID Tech 3 engine polling strongly in the indie games and released mods categories.

- Turambar, on 01/30/2008, -0/+13ID Tech 3 polled high, but not as high as FS2_Open with BSG: Beyond the Red Line, which took Indie Game of the Year

BTW Insurgency and Battle Star Galactica: Beyonde the Red Line were awesome! - Chirp08, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1awesome to hear BSG did so well, I have a friend on the modeling team for them so I knew they were in the running.
- vertigoblue, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2why the hell are they even including unreleased mods?
- TiMMY8765, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4hell yeah space sim games. Also very excited someone's making a mechwarrior mod. I now have a reason to upgrade my pc to play crysis.
- Icyfenix, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4you can't, it's impossible. I, HAL 9000 still cannot play crysis, and I have achieved backwards time travel.
- estvir, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1MechWarrior mod?! Link, NOW!
- Lunarbunny, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/
They also have legal authorization from Microsoft (current Battletech license holder) to create it, so they won't be getting C&Ds.- estvir, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Really? That's awesome, thanks for the link.
They chose Crysis? That's.. ambitious, good luck to them though, I wish I could help out. As long as they get the Mechs fine I can't imagine the mod being too bad.
- estvir, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Really? That's awesome, thanks for the link.
- Lunarbunny, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/
- rz8472, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2Awesome; if anyone is interested in the demo (2 missions + 1 tutorial mission and limited multiplayer), you can download it here:
http://www.game-warden.com/bsg/downloads.html
Looking at all the other independent games and having played BtRL myself, it's clear that it is far more visually stunning and has much more polish than any of the other games. (Not to belittle the other games)
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 01/30/2008, -0/+15Sorry for the comment abuse. Didn't want to watch but had to so here you go:
- l0k0, on 01/30/2008, -0/+30Minerva is really professional stuff. Almost up to Valve quality, and he didn't even need to use the gravity gun to make it interesting.
- DFENS, on 01/30/2008, -0/+9In some ways, better then Valve quality. Much of it is simply fascinating with many 'a-ha' moments.
- MadceltUK, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4Dugg for Minerva
- Foenetik, on 01/30/2008, -2/+15Congrats to Insurgency. They've put so much work into it since the first beta release.
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 01/30/2008, -13/+4Realistic combat my ass. One guy can camp a corner and one-shot everyone. The insurgent's voice acting is terrible. "rrrEEALOADING"
- CallanHans, on 01/30/2008, -2/+7It's free. Hoorah.
- XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 01/30/2008, -13/+4Realistic combat my ass. One guy can camp a corner and one-shot everyone. The insurgent's voice acting is terrible. "rrrEEALOADING"
- Mexicore, on 01/30/2008, -5/+3Yea congrats, but I think you mispelled "Empires."
- juicebag, on 01/30/2008, -0/+22I can't take Tremulous seriously with Tenacious D's The Metal playing in the background.
NO ONE CAN DESTROY THE METAL- Lokishot, on 01/30/2008, -1/+11I think it made the mod 300% more badass.
- PoeticExplosion, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4I make it a habit to turn music off on games anyway. But Tremulous is an _amazing_ game. The (playable) aliens are completely different from the humans, for once! It also has ridiculously fast-paced gameplay.
- ours, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1"aliens are completely different from the humans, for once"
You haven't played AvP/AvP2 I presume. Not one but 2 types of aliens (Xenomorph and Predator) plus the marines as humans. - Jektal, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1I take it you haven't played Natural Selection for HL(1) either?
Between the lack of any description for the Unreleased Mods, fuzzy definition of "independent" and "mod" in the Indie Mods category, no credit for earlier mods like Natural Selection which Tremulous is a near clone of, and putting everything in a long video instead of a list, this article gets a big bury.- PoeticExplosion, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Nope, don't have NS. I've heard it's similar, though Tremulous started development sooner than NS, so it's not a clone. They are both inspired by an old Quake mod.
- ours, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1"aliens are completely different from the humans, for once"
- Varz, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3Yeah the game is pretty fun like a free version of Natural Selection.
- quaunaut, on 01/30/2008, -1/+3Yeah, except less balanced, fun, or professional.
- Zaggynl, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2zing!
- quaunaut, on 01/30/2008, -1/+3Yeah, except less balanced, fun, or professional.
- Genma, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1you can't kill the metal. the metal will live on. unless someone deconstructs the metal, then you will have no spawn.
- bonedead, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2but techno was proven wrong
- Grjemo, on 01/30/2008, -3/+4I can't wait to check some of these out!
- hydratedsquash, on 01/30/2008, -0/+6The dinosaur sounds like a little girl.
The BF2 engine- Great for Modders.- Dustmuffins, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4Maybe it's a little girl raptor? You ever think of THAT?
- spidoman, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1It's just ripped from the movie. GTFO of my world if you don't think the velociraptor scream is terrifying.
- ClockworksNine, on 01/30/2008, -2/+5I feel dumb, I thought it was going to be case mods. Oh well, still dugg.
- Lokishot, on 01/30/2008, -2/+12I'm kinda interested in that Zombie Panic mod.
- undershirt, on 01/30/2008, -2/+7Me too, but I'm saving myself for Left 4 Dead, hehe.
- Checkerd, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4Its a little buggy, but still pretty fun if you can get your team organized.
- arcooke, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4Wait until it's more polished. I downloaded it a few weeks ago and it's still really undeveloped. There's only one character model for each team (zombies/survivors), bad animations that need updating, and the gameplay needs some serious tweaking. At least when I played.
Graphics looked nice though.. and it has a lot of potential. - MASTERPL, on 01/30/2008, -0/+6I think zombie panic source is great. The atmosphere is easy to get into, and when you are the last survivor with just a few bullets left.. Let me just say, I got freaked out a few times when ambushed from the shadows.
- TrevorBradley, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4It actually is an awesome mod. The trick is to find a good server. Some servers are filled with jerks, others are great.
The mod has convinced me that deep down in every man there's a need to role play in a zombie outbreak. The best servers have human screamers. Occasionally someone breaks out Thriller or Queens "Don't Stop Me Now" from Shaun of the Dead over VoIP. It's fantastic.
Most critical bug to fix at this point, getting the player list working so you can mute people. Otherwise, ZP:S is fantastic. - Lunarbunny, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2I personally think that it could be really good if it gets some polish. I think the speed needs to get increased a bit too...I don't like the fact that I have to empty a whole magazine into a zombie just to kill it (I mean come on, you start out with what, 1.5 mags?) Also the movement speed feels like walking through molasses.
- Misinformant, on 01/30/2008, -4/+8Natural Selection 2, please.
- soot, on 01/30/2008, -4/+1Did that ***** go vaporware? I saw one video they put out for dynamic mesh geometry or whatever almost two years ago, and then total blackout.
- DeviantDragon, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4They post fairly regular updates and podcasts at their site. Not vaporware.
- OreoJackson, on 01/30/2008, -0/+7They're still in development, going commercial on source
- HotBaconSauce, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2They went SC first so you can't see how development is going. I wish they went MC for celerity..
- stereoa, on 01/31/2008, -0/+1I love going sc first.
- soot, on 01/30/2008, -4/+1Did that ***** go vaporware? I saw one video they put out for dynamic mesh geometry or whatever almost two years ago, and then total blackout.
- Uncle_Joe, on 01/30/2008, -2/+12I'm apart of the MechWarrior: Living Legends mod team and I have to say while I don't participate in the actual modeling (I do web administration) the dev's work very hard day in and day out, and getting their work highlighted to millions of gamers is really what keeps them going. What ModDB does is in many ways essential to the entire modding scene.
- Psi57, on 01/30/2008, -0/+2I do believe I'll need a new pair of trousers when your mod is released...
- arcooke, on 01/30/2008, -0/+3I tried out Padworld and it wasn't all that great. If you download it, make sure to download the v1.2 patch as well, otherwise you'll get kicked out of multiplayer games.
- RadiatedAnt, on 01/30/2008, -6/+3im interested in a you guessed it Portal mod with a Space Invaders twist!
It's Gold, Jerry! It's Gold!! - Rizzen, on 01/30/2008, -0/+6Insurgency is alot of fun when both teams play right. Spawn campers can go ***** themselves.
- markwilcox, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5They could have given the winning mod more screen time.
- Danl, on 01/30/2008, -4/+3TLDNW
- Landeyda, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Holy crap, talk about having too many games to play now...
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 01/30/2008, -0/+41This having to watch the movie thing was kind of annoying. Here you go:

- diggeon, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1BtRL is not thrid person.
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1The video showed you driving spaceships in 3rd person view. I didn't do extensive research, I just wrote what the video showed.

- gldfshnpcklejar, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1The video showed you driving spaceships in 3rd person view. I didn't do extensive research, I just wrote what the video showed.
- sevenalive, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1i believe Operation Black Mesa is just called Black Mesa, infact it was never called operation black mesa
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1It was in the video :/ sorry.
- carlonchox911, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1It was called Black mesa:Source before , Valve made them change the name
- Zaggynl, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1THANK YOU SIR.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4That Jurassic Park mod better deliver.
- Rekzai, on 01/30/2008, -1/+4I wish there were more Portal mods and maps on that site.
- markwilcox, on 01/30/2008, -1/+3http://portalmaps.net/
- mattyice11, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1They need to implement some kind of user rating system.
- markwilcox, on 01/30/2008, -1/+3http://portalmaps.net/
- sixthree, on 01/30/2008, -2/+8That video ruined the awards for me. Holy hell that was annoying.
- psychoticD, on 01/30/2008, -3/+1INDEPEDENT
- diggeon, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1FPS sweep, time for some categories.
- Psi57, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4Beyond the Red Line FTW.
- sevenalive, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Does every site that streams video steal this player, http://www.jeroenwijering.com, then change the right click menu to there site. That is a downside to open source i guess, people can steal and you can't do nothing about it.
- sevenalive, on 01/30/2008, -0/+5look at the license for the player

I wonder if they bought it for the lousy 20 euros, if they didn't they should die for being cheap bastards.

- thydzik, on 01/30/2008, -2/+1hmmm, i thought it was going to be about case mods.
- geoffreyireland, on 01/30/2008, -0/+4Whatever happened to Black Mesa Source being in the finalists? Its got massive community hype but obviously not ModDB hype.
Its taking forever to make but then again how many complete game remakes take a short time? - solid12345, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1Is it just me or have the quality and speed of which mods come out has declined the last several years? I remember back in the days of Counter-Strike there was a new competing HL1 mod every couple of weeks it seemed.
Is it because games are becoming more complicated to mod for or is the industry growing so fast that talent just gets snatched up quicker? - protogenxl, on 01/30/2008, -1/+2Best Unreleased mod of the year is Starfox: Shadows of Lylat http://www.game-warden.com/starfox/
But than again this whole category is dumb it should be called best hype of the year - TechCF, on 01/30/2008, -0/+1There was actually some good Indie games there for my Ubuntu system!
