- bubbameister33, on 06/09/2009, -36/+399This will only further sales of the game. If you ignore it, it will go away. Just vote with your wallet. Why aren't people boycotting Madden, if anything needs boycotting its that.
- Rob1n, on 06/09/2009, -40/+376The point is that Valve promised them dlc for the game, and they didn't release any dlc. Instead they just made a new game. I can understand why ppl can be disappointed because of that.

- bmcnally, on 06/09/2009, -36/+229I'm fine with buying L4D 2. The first one gave me $60 of enjoyment - much better buy than a lot of other comparable games, even without continued Valve support.
- mu0p, on 06/09/2009, -9/+189There was a post by Owen Good from Kotaku on this a few days back that i think said it best:
"For in all its justifications of L4D2, Valve is going to be faced with its own history regarding Team Fortress 2, one of the standard-bearers for how DLC can help evolve a game and sustain fans well after its release. Even if TF2 began as (and its updates remain exclusive to) a PC game, argumentatively, everyone will ask why the same thing can't be done with L4D, or at least its PC version.
... I do respect Valve's perfect right to do what it wishes with its own IP, and anyone in the industry would agree the success of L4D fairly demands a sequel. But doing it so soon, and in this form and context, one of the most respected and evangelized brands in gaming risks taking a dent to its reputation. The game we see in November must be night-and-day different from the original, and I don't mean new maps set in the New Orleans sunshine."
Valve set the standard for post-game support with TF2 and it's sad to see the greatest dev in the world (in my eyes) getting corrupted by EA and the Xbox 360 sales models of frequent sequels, micropayments, and constant DLC. - rhesusattack, on 06/09/2009, -45/+202Waaaah.
- Mejogid, on 06/09/2009, -12/+156To be honest, I think the reason people are making such a fuss is that the graphics haven't developed massively and it's only been a year - everything else has been completely overhauled. Furthermore, there will most likely be some sort of incentive for existing customers - Gabe originally wanted to release it as free DLC but the L4D team felt they had too much to release to reasonably integrate it into what was already there.
This makes me think that they're not doing it to milk consumers for money, but because they think it's the best way to do the game justice, so don't assume they're going to rip us of. I think over the last few years Valve has been more loyal to its fan base than any other company, but that's still not enough to stop the hissy fits every time they do something slightly unexpected. Gamers need to grow up... - lostinseganet, on 06/09/2009, -9/+145I have not signed this thing. I want 8 player coop. They are thinking about it. I hope enough people voice their opinion, and this event is enough pressure for them to bring the old survivors back and 8 player coop.
- Tarokun, on 06/09/2009, -1/+96Dear Valve,
*cough*HalfLife2Episode3*cough* - TheVirus, on 06/09/2009, -44/+120An FPS cannot be properly enjoyed on a console, I don't care what anyone says, it's an injustice to any FPS game to waste time playing it on a console.
- jayhawk88, on 06/09/2009, -46/+116My God, you petulant, spoiled children. Seriously, look at what Valve has done for you over the years. If you're making a list of "Game Companies Who Consistently Make the Best Games And Are Also Responsive To Their Fanbases", the list begins (and probably ends) with Valve and Blizzard in some order. Good grief, the TF2 updates themselves should bank more goodwill than most game companies could generate in 10 years. Not to mention that it came in the Orange Box with a Half Life 2 compilation and Portal! Steam is pushing the boundaries of digital distribution. Valve is also incredibly responsive and supportive of people developing their own mods/maps/etc for various games.
Yes, they're turning LFD around quickly to make a holiday sale. But come on, a boycott? - mattman202, on 06/09/2009, -2/+64I guess it's because Valve promised TF2-like updates for Left for Dead.
Treyarch or Infinity Ward hardly says a thing about their game after launch other than map packs and the like. - ba5e, on 06/09/2009, -17/+77Yeah, I am thinking 18,500 will become hypocrites
- kvgirard, on 06/09/2009, -5/+60An interview with Valve’s VP of marketing Doug Lombardi. It's a pretty interesting read, and i would say it is too early to pass judgment.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/06/04/valve-o ... - macp, on 06/09/2009, -6/+53i respectfully disagree. L4D is pretty great, provided that you play with a team of friends vs another team of friends. it makes for a lot of laughs. you need solid team work to succeed on either side.
if people aren't communicating through mic or typing, u are playing a different, more horrible game. - TheVirus, on 06/09/2009, -7/+53I think another reason is it'll split the modding community. You can only play L4D so much before the gameplay modes get tedious and repetitive. They do need more campaign content and this sequel is not the way to do it.
- graemee, on 06/09/2009, -16/+61There was DLC, the new survival mod and extended versus to the rest of the maps. New Achievements.
Modders can add melee weapons, PLEASE. - rabidbob, on 06/09/2009, -1/+44While the idea is good I think in practice left 8 dead would be a bloody nightmare. Getting a team of 4 people to work together in game is bad enough, getting 8 people to work together would be downright impossible.
- Daemastrius, on 06/09/2009, -7/+50I think it'd be hilarious if Valve gave a beta release to all the members of this group.
- Secretion, on 06/09/2009, -13/+51There seems to be a new Call of Duty out every year - why is this any different?
- TheVirus, on 06/09/2009, -4/+38So instead of downloading large content for an existing game, we have to download large content for an entirely new game. That logic makes no sense. Regardless of where the content is going, it's going to be downloaded eventually.
- dhjackburton, on 06/09/2009, -2/+34I've put soooo many hours into L4D it is sick. Could they just tack on new weapons and maybe a crappy map or two? Sure. Instead, they're redesigning the AI Director and adding dynamic pathway generation. Plus new event mechanics and adding melee weapons instead of just projectile.
Stop bitching about having to pay a developer to develop a game. You can either get crappy improvements for free or great improvements for some money. Stop being cheap! - inactive, on 06/09/2009, -10/+39I want the SDK before a sequel.
- graemee, on 06/09/2009, -4/+33That game is called Grammar Wolfenstein
- Shazbuckle, on 06/09/2009, -4/+32Are you serious?
Every cod game is merely just a skinpack with different maps. - eviscerator, on 06/09/2009, -28/+55Why the hell would you want to put a stop to a sequel to mind bogglingly awesome game? I simply don't get it.
- DemiRonin, on 06/09/2009, -25/+50This has gotta be the strangest boycott ever...
human rights, world trade, genocide.....nah.... ZOMBIES!! - MonkeyNews, on 06/09/2009, -18/+43Wrong.
They did release DLC (Survival mode) and will release more DLC in the future (based on recent interviews). - studiopenguin, on 06/09/2009, -1/+26Err... the Genesis was released in 1989, and the Sega Saturn was released in 1995. The Super NES and Nintendo 64 were closer together than that.
- inactive, on 06/09/2009, -2/+25@Elranzer:
That scenario is a bit different. Final Fantasy XIII is a regular Final Fantasy game, whereas Final Fantasy XIV is a MMO sequal to the original FF Online. They aren't competing with each other. - Tr33fiddy, on 06/09/2009, -1/+24This petition is about ending the world's hunger for BRAAAAIIIINS.
- alexforcefive, on 06/09/2009, -1/+24It's definitely too early to pass judgement. I can't think of a single example of Valve dropping the ball on anything (except deadlines), and yet all this year people have been jumping on everything they do. I wish we could just tone down the internet mob ***** for like five seconds
- Shazbuckle, on 06/09/2009, -1/+23I suspect most of them will end up buying it anyway
- apzdsx, on 06/09/2009, -0/+22That explains a lot, geauxtig3rs. Xbox360 players are used to getting ripped-off and a sequel every year, so I can see why they'd buy this sequel without a fuss. PC players, however, hold Valve up to their promises. Before and after L4D was released Valve promised free content updates similar to TF2, so when this sequel was announced people got understandably upset, not only because Valve broke their promises, but because now the already small community would be split in two.
- directedition, on 06/09/2009, -1/+22It's a GAME. Not an expensive LITERARY device.
- billyelliotmann, on 06/09/2009, -2/+23Try getting 40 people to work together! Oh how I miss the old days of WoW raiding.
- themastersb, on 06/09/2009, -1/+21I've boycotted Madden forever.
- Drakenking, on 06/09/2009, -10/+30The Call of Duty's were vastly different to the point where they only shared a name. Even that has come to an end. Modern Warfare 2.. Awwwwww yeahhhhhhh.
- plague, on 06/09/2009, -0/+20Your comment is longer than the article.
- cloudberries, on 06/09/2009, -2/+22I'm sure they'd rather L4D2 was deployed based on an Episode-3 style timeline.
- norman619, on 06/09/2009, -9/+29Exactly. The people boycotting the game can miss out if they like and more to them for exercising thier right as consumers. I for one will be buying it when it comes out. I will be enjoying all of the zombie holocaust goodness.
- Greedfeed, on 06/09/2009, -0/+19Wait... you signed the boycott... but you will be buying l4d2... I don't think boycott means what you think it means...
- specialcases, on 06/09/2009, -4/+23I bought the game for £40 (UK) back in January and am still consistantly playing it; the quality of the content of the first one would spur me to buy the second one in Novemeber regardless i think.
- pat0neill, on 06/09/2009, -37/+56BREAKING: 18,500 need a hobby
- Wesside, on 06/09/2009, -1/+19He missed the point that L4D shouldn't be played on consoles at all. Which is where he played it.
Yes PC users are going to download it all through Steam. - BrendanJB, on 06/09/2009, -1/+19Dude, I'm not sure where you've been, but Valve is not a small company anymore, and its userbase is far from "a small number of very dedicated followers".
- Metalcard, on 06/09/2009, -15/+33Didn't Valve say that in order to get all the features they are adding to L4D 2, dismemberment, hand held weapons, and Director 2.0 mainly, would basically require a huge download because it would have to add on to characters, and completely change out the zombies, which is like recreating the game in a sense. Then state its far easier to simply make a newer version of the game rather than force long downloads and try to get everything to play nice with the new stuff.
I never bought the game myself, only rented, so I guess I don't feel the same as people who spent $30+ but Valve's argument seems pretty valid to me. - TheVirus, on 06/09/2009, -5/+22Sorry, but Survival mode was a cop-out. Sure, it's great fun but let's be honest here, it's not as enjoyable as a full campaign. Plus, there's only 1 new map, the rest of it is just segments of existing maps.
