- EntropyGun, on 02/13/2009, -0/+120They missed a couple:
11. Unscalable 3 foot high walls.
12. Every hardened base and hideout can be safely and easily navigated by its spacious, clean, accommodating, and well-lit ventilation shaft system. - GoKings, on 02/12/2009, -0/+73Yeah because I want to play a game where if I get shot one time I die, or with no health packs, or if I'm some lame fat guy from Minnesota that doesn't know how to shoot a gun... What do you expect? Do people really want annoying reloads? Or to only be able to carry one gun? Or to not be able to find ammo? They're cliches because it's necessary for decent gameplay.
I will say though that the incompetent minions is ridiculous. Some games have gotten better with it, but there are still far too many FPS's where it's just guys running around in circles while you take them out one by one. - DrCyclops, on 02/13/2009, -0/+71In the first level you huddle for hours in real time during artillery barrages, trying to keep from crapping yourself in terror. If you fail, a French colonel comes and beats you for cowardice. In the next level, you're sent "over the top" where you're shot down by German machine gun fire within the first five seconds. After that there's a hospital level where you're taken care of by a pretty English nurse who doesn't seem fazed by the fact that you've got no legs beneath the kneecaps. In the final level you die of typhus from unsanitary hospital conditions.

100/10 EGM - terribly1, on 02/13/2009, -0/+67Everyone grunts when they jump?
- kd420, on 02/12/2009, -0/+49Hassle-free reloads is spot on. Goldeneye, with it's universal *move gun off screen and have a metallic sound*. I remember the first time I played Perfect Dark and she actually reloaded the guns, I was so amazed!
I wonder if there are any good games that don't fall into at least a few of these traps. It'd be hard to make a game challenging without including ammo and health packs. - Fejerro, on 02/12/2009, -0/+42There's actually a very good explanation for all the exploding barrels: http://www.hlcomic.com/index.php?date=2005-06-24
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -0/+37They should make a WWI FPS,but we'd probably just end up being stuck in a trench the whole game.
- merreborn, on 02/13/2009, -0/+37Hear hear.
Fun trumps realism. Game designers make unrealistic design choices because they result in a more enjoyable game. And that's a good thing. - krisscofield, on 02/13/2009, -0/+3611. Right before you run into any sort of serious boss or heavy situation, you'll know. Because the room/hallway/platform leading up to it will be conveniently jam packed with ammo, armor and health.
- divinediva, on 02/12/2009, -4/+37Personally I think this is hilarious.
- tenio, on 02/13/2009, -0/+31but in call of duty you regain health miraculously...
almost dead? just wait a few seconds and your fine! - FuZ3, on 02/13/2009, -0/+29I live in Minnesota and every fat guy I know can use a gun.
- aksn1p3r, on 02/12/2009, -2/+2710 Half-Life Add-Ons for console FPS games.
- wondertwins, on 02/13/2009, -1/+25Cant believe WWII didnt make it on the list.
- mrdeathgod, on 02/12/2009, -1/+25Dugg for "Sheik Chang von Jimenez"
- Madpony, on 02/13/2009, -1/+24... You can see your hands but you can't see your feet...
- Nintendesert, on 02/13/2009, -0/+21The first Rainbow 6 was like this. Perfect planned op and things went smooth. A flaw and you and your entire team got wasted in a matter of seconds.
Good game. - groo68, on 02/13/2009, -0/+20Call of duty has healing though. Counterstrike doesn't have health packs.
It would be funny to have a reload monkey, so you have a monkey on your back that will fill up the clips you give it, so it explains the no ammo loss. but if someone shoots your monkey you are stuck with wasting ammo each reload. - DrCyclops, on 02/13/2009, -0/+19I believe that game was called "Ghost Recon."
- loveddevol, on 02/13/2009, -0/+18we need a new timesplitters
- Sliver85, on 02/13/2009, -0/+18Isn't that even worse, though: having the ability to magically recover from any sort of injury and be back to perfect health in moments?
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -0/+18You know, I wouldn't mind the obligatory stealth level if it weren't mandatory. Like, if I actually alert the guards or set off the alarms or whatever, at least give me a chance to face off against this unstoppable legion of enemies, rather than have an instant game over.
- buddamus, on 02/12/2009, -0/+18Nothing was more fun then nuking demons in doom with me BFG
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -0/+17It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum.
- Pr0v0st, on 02/13/2009, -0/+15Urban Terror, anyone? You lose unfired rounds when you change clips, and if you get shot in the leg, you bleed out if you don't bandage it.
- Flaptastic, on 02/13/2009, -1/+16I'm pretty sure a realistic FPS wouldn't be much fun, at least for most people.
*runs into a room*
*gets shot*
*bleeds a whole lot and then dies*
Game Over (no save points, extra lives, or anything else that will give the player a second chance).
Yep, I'll take the cliches if they are fun. - bigteebo, on 02/13/2009, -0/+14There's a website that measures "time to crate" in FPSes, where it lists the time it takes from the beginning of the game/level until you first see crates.
- xceptionaly, on 02/13/2009, -0/+13The first Rainbow 6 games didn't have any of that *****, and they were awesome. It can be done. Developers are just lazy.
- geesamba, on 02/13/2009, -0/+13Well played, DrCyclops. You seem to have found all the achievements!
- inactive, on 02/13/2009, -1/+12The latest call of duty games don't have health packs. Neither did the latest halos.
- Jeepinator, on 02/13/2009, -3/+14clips =/= magazines.
- Lonewolfx77, on 02/13/2009, -0/+11In HL2 you carry every gun around with you all the time. There are health rechargers. And you reload perfectly every time. But I wouldn't call the developers of that game lazy.
- Jeepinator, on 02/13/2009, -2/+12Yes actually. A magazine actually contains rounds. A clip holds those rounds for insertion into a magazine. For example. With old bolt action rifles the rounds were held by a small steel strip. This is the clip. The magazine was built into the gun just under and behind the chamber.
Why did you think I don't know the difference? It's quite a large one. - shadowmanjack, on 02/13/2009, -0/+10SOCOM doesn't have automatic ammo adjustment; you reload before a clip is empty, it's gone.
- bagboyrebel, on 02/13/2009, -0/+10In all honesty, you could make the same argument about any genre of games, not just FPS.
- mcprogrammer, on 02/13/2009, -0/+10I wasn't aware that a slightly humorous article about common elements of FPS's was considered journalism.
- theanticrust1, on 02/13/2009, -0/+10Also, Half Life was one of the first (if not the first), to have all the levels fit together. So if you finish the level in a room, you will still be in that room when you go to start the next level. This is different from preceeding games like quake or doom where you end a level and are magically transported to a completely different place. Also, Half Life attempted to have med packs and guns/ammo in places that "made sense" instead of glowing boxes along the side of a hallway.
And the first to have NPCs that have their own loyalties. As in the marines would shoot at the aliens. Instead of EVERYONE being against just you.
And say what you want... but the iconic Half Life Tram Ride now has it's equivalent in basically EVERY first person shooter made after.
Goddam did I love that game. - entropysteak, on 02/13/2009, -0/+9i've got balls of steel.
- venomoushealer, on 02/13/2009, -1/+10How can the real thing sound more like a toy than the video game version?
“Charlie Chaplin once entered a Charlie Chaplin look-alike contest in Monte Carlo and came in third; that’s a story.”
-Mr. Goodkat - geesamba, on 02/13/2009, -0/+9...and I'm all out of gum.
- Jimbob200, on 02/13/2009, -0/+9I think that's a ridiculous assessment. People play games for all kinds of different reasons. I only play the best shooters cause I'm guaranteed a good time. Games like CoD4 do everything well AND have an awesome story. FEAR has great gameplay, and it's got a creepy story.
Great FPS games will never go out of style. - coldkill3r, on 02/12/2009, -0/+8I never understood why I always need to keep every weapon that I found in the game with me at all times. It's more challenging to pick an arsenal of 3 or so weapons: you need to consider your playing style and the possible enemies that you might face.
- venomoushealer, on 02/13/2009, -0/+8Someday I'm going to build a house that has a ventilation system that can be taken to any part of the house.
- bryceman111, on 02/13/2009, -1/+9Impersonally, I think this is hilarious as well.
- cannonball, on 02/13/2009, -0/+8my co-worker has the exact same toy gun pictured in the obligatory super weapon. he leaves it on top of his shelf, and every now and then i'll hear him yell "incoming!!!" and then he'll empty an entire round on someone or something random.
no one is phased by it at all. i'm still new here, so i'm sort of getting use to it. - bagboyrebel, on 02/13/2009, -0/+8You have to consider the time in which HL1 was released. Not many first person shooters had much of a story, and HL1 was one of the first games to actually try and integrate the story into the game. By today's standards the story sucks, but it was great at the time.
Although Balanced points out Marathon, but I haven't played it so I have no idea what the story is like in that game. - banshee90, on 02/13/2009, -0/+811. Any companion you have with you will become a Risk if you have to keep them alive, because they do not know how to dunk and cover when being fired upon.
12. All friendlies can only lay suppressing fire and will never kill an enemy. - Radan, on 02/13/2009, -1/+8Once there were these games called Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon. They were about hardcore realism were a bullet would actually hurt like hell and if you actually survived the first shot, you would most likely limp through the entire mission (a shot to the leg and you would have trouble walking, a shot to the chest would make the character have trouble breathing e.t.c). You also saved your old half full clips, which made it not entirely certain that you would get a full clip when you reloaded (you would always use the clip with the most bullets though).
Did you read that Ubisoft? Now stop raping my favourite franchises and start making good games again! - GTOFan350, on 02/13/2009, -0/+7Wow, once all these cliches are put in a list I really start thinking...hmmm...
Well nice list, I'm off the play some L4D. - FFXIfrohike, on 02/13/2009, -0/+7And I'm 10 years overdue...
