- str3ama, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14GTA 2 and Freespace are the best on the list IMO. Freespace's title is actually: Descent Freespace: The Great War - it's an FPS/Simulation in the Descent series where you get to drive an assortment of spaceships, as you take on a campaign of missions. You later on get to command squadrons of ships, including huge battlecruisers!
Plot:
"As a pilot in the Gallactic Terran Alliance (GTA), you've known the Vasudans as the enemy for a long time. But things are about to change... An unknown menace, with technology beyond both ours and Vasudans, are destroying both sides... And now... Old enemies must unite to fight this common enemy, and the dissenters and traitors on both sides..."
If you haven't played it, now would be the time. - bhattsan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+37Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is a great online multiplayer game. It hasn't lost its game play value since the first time I played it about 4 years ago.
- snypa, on 10/24/2007, -112/+4Gunz is only at 41? Should at least be in the top 20.
- acdcfanbill, on 10/11/2007, -4/+173@snypa
Well you would first have to petition for a change in the order of the alphabet... - Jleagle, on 10/11/2007, -42/+5Thank god, Grand Theft Auto was above GunBound.
- SamKellett, on 10/11/2007, -8/+23Worms Armageddon and Worms 2 are available on download.com: http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-2012&qt=worms&tag=srch
Considering it's CNET I'm assuming it's legal... - TwoKill, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2They spelled toblo wrong, which is funny because its the first game to win the first IGF student award. One of the guys proposed to his gf in his acceptance speech you guys should check it out! Also, they made their own physics engine which is ridiculous.
- Decimator, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I'm surprised I didn't see Spring RTS on there: http://spring.clan-sy.com/screenshots.php
We usually have 100-300 people in the lobby at any given time. - musicaltech, on 10/24/2007, -2/+26Wow, a free games list without the best two free games I've played. So wrong.
Cave Story - Doukutsu Monogatari
http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/
Wonderful little acton RPG. You have to play it to realize how great it is. And the really amazing thing about it is that the whole game was created by one person, if I remember correct.
N - Ninja puzzler platformer
http://www.harveycartel.org/metanet/n.html
Object is to get to the door. Crazy amount of levels and tons of fun.
Both games are extremely small, btw. - th2edrrfs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I don't understand how they could get paid for the hard work it takes. Do developers really get enough money from donation buttons? anyone here a developer?
- theRIAA, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12True Combat Elite!!?!??!!
http://www.truecombatelite.net/
100 spots and no TC:E? - ferrofluid, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1@ SamKellett
Clicking on the 'download now' and Worms Armageddon 1 starting from download.com causes my Avast anti-virus to throw a wobbly and warn of Win32:Adware-gen. and bsrwcvd9.exe in the cache
C-NET and download.com or whoever supplied them with the programs are pulling a nasty here with worms or maybe a spyware trojan. - daviddiaz, on 10/11/2007, -10/+1They should've put Second Life in there IMO. It's really a great game
- Rekzai, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Yes but which ones are actually fun
- foolfromhell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@str3ama
Freespace 1 and 2 and expansions and all addons have taken 50+ hours of my life... and I loved every minute of it! - L4WL3RS34L, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4No Dystopia? Great FPS game!
http://www.dystopia-game.com/ - kuchino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Dark space is not a free game, you play on demo account.
- rnelsonee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4ferrofluid:
download.com has been doing this for years now - they're notorious for having virus-infected software. It used to be my #1 site, but now I won't download anything from them. - Nazuel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1No love for Megamek? Any Battletech fan should have it.
http://megamek.sourceforge.net/idx.php?pg=main

http://www.mekwars.org/ - shagen454, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8"Worms Armageddon and Worms 2 are available on download.com: http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tg=dl-2012&qt=worms&tag=srch

Unfortunately, it is legal... because it's only the demo, so you can only play for a predestined amount of time. I don't know how many times I have fallen for this in 8 whole years since this game came out. The copy protection on this game is immaculate. These days it's one of the few games I've seen with a $3.95 "download insurance" fee... this game is good, but it should be free by now!! - insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4They forgot those half life games that are free if you have a radeon card. Or as long as someone you know has a radeon card will let you login to steam on their computer.
- Rowen7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Everyone forgets the original game of Subspace:
Subspacedownloads.com Get the Continuum Client
Classic Space Combat! - SamKellett, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Just to clear things up because I don't like to look the fool.
The Worms games are the full versions and they're not viruses. I have them installed, it's all cool. - jeff303, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5@SamKellett
When you click the link it says something like "License:Free to try; $14.95 to buy" - Wo1ke, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Anyone know any good, free, multiplayer RTS games? (not starcraft)
- Foamator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I would have thought Liero would be on there.
It's like Worms, but realtime, with more weapons and multiplayer locally/online. Way more fun IMO.
Liero Xtreme: http://iworx5.webxtra.net/~lxallian/LXRS/ - tech42er, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@Sam
That's shareware. It's not a free full version. It says "free to try, $14.95 (or $19.95) to buy." - kevisazombie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2how about Dink Smallwood free full RPG with incredible modding features. Has its own coding language based of C+ easy to pick up and make some sweet mods
http://dinknetwork.com/ - 4tygames, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1No Future Pinball?
Free download at http://www.futurepinball.com
With all of the free pinball tables you can download, it is like 30 free games! - imdwalrus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@SamKellett:
Really? Lookng at the CNET link posted earlier, all of the results seem to say that they only give you an hour of playtime. I'm curious as to how this is a free game.
- orientis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+79I'd like a basic description of each game, rather than a hundred-strong list of names. Well intentioned though. Dugg because this is still a good resource and should hit the front page.
- MackDiesel2010, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Ranked by popularity would be better than an alphabetized list
- Battleloser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Anybody remember infantry? That's free again on the 26th
- arunforce, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3One of the best games ever. :D
*cough* I was a 30ker. *cough*
EOL ftw. :) - KenOh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Repping Mech Skirm.
sup - rshotl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Infantry was amazing!!! It's going free again? Omg wow, time to get addicted......! I love you for telling me!!!
- rshotl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2any chance our old accounts works on Infantry or no way? I am sure there have been tons of wipes, but if I could on my original account, I'd cream!! What zone is about to be hot now a days? What's the game play like now a days? flagging or what?
I remember flagging.... then btying in EOL (I was sooo addicted to EOL... top 100 although I'll admit I wasn't the greatest, but I made good friends) - popeyerpr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Holy crap! Infantry really is coming back for free. http://forums.station.sony.com/station/posts/list.m?topic_id=11500004187
- rshotl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Hey guys! Spread the word about infantry going free again.... someone already posted an article on here about it, run a search for it and Digg it! I honestly can say I have not played a computer game since Infantry went pay2play, and I am already so excited about it coming back alive. I look forward to see you guys all playing in on the 26th! Ciao!~~
- MikeGrenade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Tanarus as well, I can't wait to give that another spin.
- KenOh, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Old accounts should work and have everything on them, but, the only stats I think that have never been wiped are for Skirmish. (btw, if you ever subscribed, the game is fully functional).
Anyway, let's try to get a digg story on this and get people to digg it up.
- arunforce, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3One of the best games ever. :D
- Turambar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20and Freespace 2 isn't on this list why?
Freespace 2 SCP has to be the absolute best free game i've ever touched. It's totally free, too.
this list makes me sad. :-( - dazreil, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1the site is dead already

- duel007, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2damn, 52 diggs and its already down? what a crappy host. anyone got a mirror?
- MtnXfreerider, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2go bluehost!
I swear people bash the hell out of godaddy, but my sites have made digg frontpage on one of their shared hosting plans and handled the traffic just fine.
(wordpress at that) - ccanni1028, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's the number of pageviews and not the number of Diggs that a site gets which causes it to go down. There could be 2000 pageviews where 1950 of them didn't like the page at the time there's 50 Diggs.
- MtnXfreerider, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2go bluehost!
- Jonny0stars, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3F.E.A.R is free ?

I am surprised that Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory barely edged onto the list (#99); wasn't Activision's plan to release the game free at the time revolutionary?
Also, shouldn't Civilization I or II have a mention?
- coldphoenix, on 10/11/2007, -46/+2I don't think the list was compiled in any sort of order.
- feathercat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+46It's alphabetical. Clearly.
- jebo4jc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30Why did I click "show comment"??!?
I feel so much dumber for reading those - rnelsonee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Haha, me too. Clicking on the second "show comment" made my day though - easily the funniest comment I've read, even if it wasn't supposed to be.
- rmeddy, on 10/11/2007, -7/+2Aaaaand it's down.
- ImYourRealDad, on 10/11/2007, -70/+8Enemy Territory is at 99 and Anarchy is at number 3? Buried as inaccurate.
- eatablog, on 10/11/2007, -3/+46It's alphabetized, dad?
- ArgaWarga, on 10/11/2007, -13/+2It's alphabetical, guys.
e:f,b - ultimazombie, on 10/11/2007, -15/+3It's in alphabetical order... (slow reply, digg down)
- psykiv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Dugg for GTA2. I wasted so much time in the middle school comp labs with that one
- funkydopeloven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10gta 1 was better than 2 imo
- tastypastry, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Frets on Fire is fun to play with the PS2 Guitar.

- Sikarian, on 10/11/2007, -9/+8Guys, its alphabetical. It's not going by order of best to worst.
- oriondr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I disagree, Allegiance is the best game on that list by far.
- DanaG, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Add MechCommander to the list: http://www.mechcommander.org/
- somekids, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2http://taspring.clan-sy.com

21. Digital Paint: Paintball 2
http://digitalpaint.planetquake.gamespy.com/
We've got about 8 co-workers hooked on it during lunch. Great game. - bwesterman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Link is out. Digg should really reconsider caching the front page stories. You don't have to cache them all... it's just so annoying to be shut out from the "lastest and greatest" stories... Yeah, I know there is duggmirror... but I really think digg could do something about it.
- StillAnonymous, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Don't forget Ultima IV, one of the best RPGs of all time:
http://www.enlartenment.com/ultima/u4download.html - SFX112, on 10/24/2007, -2/+5How could N not be on this list!?
http://www.harveycartel.org/metanet/n.html- BenKenobi88, on 10/24/2007, -1/+2Fun game...they're making a DS version now.
- madk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5What no Albatros 18!?
- nickelking, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If it was on there I bet it'd be #1!
- berb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Something not on the list that I'd definitely recommend is "The Ur-Quan Masters", known on the 3DO as "Star Control 2". The developers released the source code to the public, so a group of people took the project as their own and changed the name so as to avoid any copyright problems.
It can be downloaded in full and 100% legally here:
http://sc2.sourceforge.net/- demonotaku, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I totally agree. There was a story about it on here a while back and I downloaded it. It's a really small file and it's a great game. Also, it's for Windows and Mac. Which is always a plus.
- renskav, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11They forgot subspace. Why do they always forget subspace. It's free and will be free forever and it's more addictive than crack.
http://www.trenchwars.org- BrassMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Yeah, subspace is amazing.

You can burn 5min playing, or spend hours on it :)
- funkydopeloven, on 10/11/2007, -9/+4buried as Lame. not even a description of each game or genre even?
- funkydopeloven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6also inaccurate as theres only 99 games listed
- Godmil, on 10/11/2007, -12/+1In what way are there only 99 games?
certainly looks like 100 to me. - funkydopeloven, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8@godmil, whats game 69? now whats game 70?

http://www.lasthalfofdarkness.com/bloodlust/
doesn't seem to work or even be free. "Get the game for only $10.95" and there not even a link to buy it... - Gogogo111, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4There is only 99 games. 69 and 70 are the same game.
- Jotaro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Why is Cave Story not on that list? I mean, freakin' 1up.com included Cave Story as part of a article they did on freeware!
- Balanced, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yup. Cave Story definitely deserves to be on any such list.
- avodrocyelir, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3soldat is another good one its kind of like a live actions worms.
- zapco03, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Glad to see someone posted this. The first thing I did when I visited the page was search for soldat. That game is amazing, multi player, still improving as the developer finds time to update and really fun. Get it here. http://www.soldat.pl/
- dsunshine1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2codename gordon is free with steam, soldat is awsome
- evilseth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Quake III is now free to download. Here is one of several links: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,4100-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html

- RainOfFire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yes, darkspace does have a subscription plan, $10 a month, but theres a 2 week free trial offered to everyone just for signing up.
you dont have to subscribe, and you can play as long as you want without paying, but you you wont be able to gain rank and prestiege (exp), and you'll be limited to small ships.

- bakeyman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8They forgot Warsow!

Even if it was misspelt. - BlackStar77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3What about Dink Smallwood? That game was awesome
- kevisazombie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1was awesome? still is.

- GarethSaxby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Don't forget that Ground Control (http://www.fileplanet.com/156136/150000/fileinfo/Ground-Control-%5BFree-Game%5D) is now free for download too... you need a free Fileplanet account, sadly, but it's still a game for nothing, and a good one at that.
- SpeakerCity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3GTA2 is unavailable on Rockstar's site. Any mirrors?
- toomuchfreetime, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2More like 99 games. "Scions of Fate" is listed twice.
...Still dugg for being neat. - SilverhammerMBA, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is a pretty good list, but there are some games on there that are definitely not full version games.
Puzzle Pirates and Bang Howdy, for example, are free if you don't mind having restricted features, worse items, and other stuff that's unlocked with a paid membership. I don't call that a completely free game - that's shareware.
Frets on Fire is a great, fun game, but hardly comes with any content at all. You either have to download (horribly crappy) user-made songs or import songs from Guitar Hero. And if you have Guitar Hero, why are you playing Frets on Fire? (Probably because you downloaded a torrent with the GH songs in it)
Pretty good list, otherwise.- Enfenestrate, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'll agree with you on that one, but I have to say that Puzzle Pirates is a great game, even with some stuff restricted.
- Battleloser, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How would you classify doubloon oceans?
- PoeticExplosion, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, you can still get all that stuff, it just takes longer as you have to buy the tokens with in-game money if you don't want to spend the cash.
- NamelessCoward, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11I'm digging this for the comments here, what a goldmine.
- redace25, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Dugg for Trackmania. Seriously guys, try this game online. Its the most fun racing game ever.
- SirG3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's a fun game. Sadly, it gives me motion-sickness.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Trackmania is infected with the StarForce virus. I'm fairly sure that the original article said it only included virus-free games.
- MaxwellTD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Starforce is evil, but it doesn't do *****! Seriously wouldn't call it a virus either.
Trackmania United is out on steam now!!! it too is awesome.
- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13No screenshots (not even small thumbnails) and no descriptions makes this list kind of pointless, it's not like anyone's going to install every one of them until they find something they really like.
- s0m3oNe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I strongly recommend Urban Terror (#96) to anyone who has ever enjoyed playing an FPS game.
www.urbanterror.net
It's a great game that combines realism with fast pace gameplay, I've been hooked on it for years now.- cquilliam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I second that. Now that Urban Terror 4.0 is released, it fully moves into the "Free" list due to the fact you don't need Quake III Arena to run it anymore. Just grab a copy of ioquake3 from ioquake3.org and grab the ioUrbanTerror package from their website. No more Q3 cdkey needed. The only downfall is that you don't get punkbuster with ioquake3, however, they do have BattleEye, and there are plenty of servers out there that use BattleEye instead of the often-troublesome pb.
- sk8errob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Urban Terror has great game-play with a huge following. (though the graphics are pretty old)
Addicting FPS
- Devroush, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Another one for the list: OpenTTD. Transport Tycoon Deluxe has become open source and some people still develop this game even further.
