Freespace's title is actually: Descent Freespace: The Great War - it's an FPS/Simulation in the Descent series where you get to drive an assortment of spaceships, as you take on a campaign of missions. You later on get to command squadrons of ships, including huge battlecruisers!
Plot:
"As a pilot in the Gallactic Terran Alliance (GTA), you've known the Vasudans as the enemy for a long time. But things are about to change... An unknown menace, with technology beyond both ours and Vasudans, are destroying both sides... And now... "Get the game for only $10.95" and there not even a link to buy it... - berb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Something not on the list that I'd definitely recommend is "The Ur-Quan Masters", known on the 3DO as "Star Control 2". The developers released the source code to the public, so a group of people took the project as their own and changed the name so as to avoid any copyright problems.

Unfortunately, it is legal... because it's only the demo, so you can only play for a predestined amount of time. I don't know how many times I have fallen for this in 8 whole years since this game came out. The copy protection on this game is immaculate.
