- voisine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+165The guy is Dan Osman, died in '98 doing a "roped cliff dive". RIP
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+104I stand corrected. Aparently he died in 1999 from...... .you guessed it! a climbing accident.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Osman - thesauce, on 10/12/2007, -3/+99Yeah, at first glance of the title I thought it would be someone running horizontally up the side of a cliff, and I kept thinking "it's just going to be another one of those fake lame videos or a commercial." When I actually watched it I almost ***** my pants.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+69There's a not-so-fine line between extreme and stupid... This guy lost sight of that line a long time ago. I get the feeling he'll soon become a shining example of natural selection.
- radarx, on 10/12/2007, -9/+51"Props to him"? No. This guy, according to accounts of his life, was a loser, jackass, and a self-centered *****. Did you catch the part in the wikipedia article about leaving behind a daughter? He was in his mid 30's, so his daughter was young when he plunged to his death. I'm all for stupid people doing stupid things when young and without children. There's a good chance they will kill themselves before making more little morons to run around on this planet. But he was lucky, and survived long enough to have a daughter and completely disregard his responsibilities to being a parent and be there for her so he could "have a good time" by jumping off of a cliff. Once you take on the responsibilities of a family, stuff like this needs to go away. If you are still jumping off of a cliff when you have kids, please hit something hard, so you don't limp away. Oh, and don't give me that "we're all going to die of something" crap, either. Dying of old age and flat broke is the best and most revered way to kick it, because it means you took care of yourself and your children. Leaving this planet better than you found it, and leaving your children a better life than you had.....that's honorable. That's what life is about.
- CypherXero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38Crazy bastard, geez! Good climb though. Mad props.
- jcims, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29My palms literally started sweating from watching that video...that vertical leap at 1:12 is truly insane.
- MasterDirk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Nah, not what you'd call a "climbing accident". Apparently, this guy liked to throw himself off cliffs with a rope attached to a rope going across the chasm. Thus the tension of the ropes when they caught each other would halt his fall, without the lameness of being slowly retarded by a bungee. Once upon a midnight dreary he miscalculated.
Not climbing, falling. Darwin-award material. - da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28What if one of the cracks he jumps for breaks off or something? I mean one loose piece of rock and he's *****
- stoanhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24I nearly choked when I saw that!
I'm used to seeing "extreme" videos on the net, but that was absolutely, 100%, completely ***** nuts! - flightmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22@radarx
See the beauty of life is that we all get to decide what a good life is for ourselves. While Dan's choices may not be your choices neither of you are "right". Dan's lessons to, and relationship with his daughter are his and hers, not yours. And while you are welcome to an opinion sharing it on such a personal topic about people I'll assume you don't know is at least obtuse if nothing worse. If his daughter is "ok" with him what right do you have to enter that discussion?
Here is an entry by his daughter Emma, from Rockclimbing.com:
------------------
Hi, my name is Emma Osman and i am Dan's daughter. I am 19 years old now and trying to go to college at the UNR. I know from reading the other comments that you figured out how exactly he died. Just so you know, don't send money to that address anymore. My aunt was in charge of that account and she not only moved 3 times since then but she was locked up in jail once and she was stealing money from that account. My dad may have not left me with much money but he had plenty of stuff that was worth money, but unfortunately when someone dies the true evil comes out. All of my dads stuff was taken by "friends" and "family" I got just a few things like his red jump suit, his guitar, and his pictures, that was all that was left to me. But I can't be anymore happy because he left me with not only memories but because he did all the stuff he did, I have pictures, posters, movies, magazine articles, and all the clips of him on TV. I love that every time I want to remember him or see him I can just type in "Dan Osman" in Google or turn on Spike TV when Max X is on and they show him so often that i can just see him. If you have any questions you can just ask me.
-------------- - twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I disagree, this guy totally has that russian video you just posted beat. Mad props to this guy. The parts where he jumps to get up is mad crazy. wow. If I just did this climb alone in 40 minutes, I'd be super happy. geeze
- MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+18@gmillered... no he really doesn't.. at all.. There are tons of people that can do backflips and I'll hand it him, crazy acrobatics, but parkour isn't new (to me) and I've seen better anyway - however this guy climbs a VERTICAL CLIFF FACE barely any time UNASSISTED and you can see he literally jumps up sometimes to catch a crack in the cliff face.
- soil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Wow. I will never trust my physical strength that much! That was somewhere between amazing and stupid.
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Yeah, I was looking up more on this guy and oddly enough a Digg link from two months ago came up third: http://digg.com/videos_people/Insaner_Rock_Climbing_Falling_Video_(Dan_Osman_Tribute)
and a direct link to the video of the type of stunt that killed him:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TokjJrMB9qs&search=dan%20osman - TheSeeker11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17It's been rumoured that this guy's balls have their own congressman.
- batguano, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16"He lived life more then anyone of us could ever hope for."
I don't know about you kev26, But while this guy was risking (and ultimately losing) his life, the rest of us were having sex.
You can define 'living' anyway you want... - csimpkins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Being a dumbass is not a good excuse.
- mike667, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9For those who think this is a fake... its not. What he did is called a SOLO RED POINT. Solo, because he did not have a belayer... RED point because he did it in one try, without falling, but NOT his first time on this climb (thats called an ON SIGHT).
Not to take away from this guys skills (he is an amazing climber), but this climb is a 5.7... that's a very easy climb from a technical stand point, a climb like this come down to endurance. and as far as the camera angles go.... notice how chalked up all the hand holds are BEFORE he grams then, this is obviously a frequently climbed rout.
MAJOR props to the dude for his courage! - thebusdriver, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17He doesnt run, he climbs. You use "run" twice, why would you choose that word? Moron.
- sdub1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Interesting that they have multiple camera angles, but no sign of a camera. This couldn't have been shot in one take.
- quazywabbit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10the russian video is not rock climbing, it is parkour, which is a combination of aerobics, jumping, vaulting, and climbing. while parkour is a fun sport it is not rock climbing and does not try to be.
- hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yeah title is a bit misleading. It's not really running. Nonetheless, what an amazing effort.
- diqq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Me too.
Still sweating. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Walk -> Run :: Climb -> ???
The title does seem inaccurate but I can't think of anything that describes it better. Climbing suggest a slow, methodical ascent which this most definitely isn't. - jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Dan Osman, while he took unnecessary risks, was a pretty interesting person to read about. There's a lot of videos and documents about him you can find by searching the web. The last time this video hit the front page I spent about an hour just watching some of his videos and reading about his death.
- radarx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@flightmonkey
I dugg your reply. Yes, you are right in every aspect of what you said, in that everyone has a different idea of what is 'right'. I will never deny that what I think is 'right' and what someone else thinks is 'right' will hardly ever meet.
Thank you for the quote by the daughter. It does put some things into perspective, though. She have some mementos from his life, but who wouldn't trade all of those material things for just one more day with that person, much less a lifetime of more memories? My father died when I was 16 from a brain aneurysm, and not a day goes by that I don't wish I could speak to him just once more (it's been over 12 years). Life's lessons are best taught by those we trust. I was lucky to learn many of those lessons before he died, but there were some very important ones that we just didn't get to. That is exactly what I'm talking about, leaving your children better that you had it. By jumping off cliffs with a child, he ignored this. I'm sure there were videos of him doing this before she was born, so what would be wrong with having those videos AND a father? - PurpleMeteor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Got life? Balls don't matter when you're dead.
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5He uses his gigantic balls as a safety chute in case of an emergency.
- sarcasticninja, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10He is survived by his daughter, Emma Osman, thus he is automatically disqualified from receiving a Darwin Award.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Osman - 0zzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6GotBalls?
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So, if he said "Guy flys up a 400ft vertical wall" you'd mark it inaccurate because he didn't actually flap his arms and fly?
- Avengelist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Addiction to adrenaline? no... it's called a Death Wish...
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I thought it would be some guy running up a building like something from the Matrix but either way it still was cool.
- Volatile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Holy goddamn ***** Spazkake and fatdog789, talk about anal. The word "run" was used metaphorically. Take life less seriously; you'll enjoy it more.
- bbear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I don't understand why having a daughter disqualifies him from receiving a Darwin Award. Having no children before the accident isn't listed as a requirement for a Darwin Award. Only that the award winner be unable to have any children after the accident.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwin_award#Requirements - tehjames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Woah, my heartrate jumped watching that.
And no it wasn't the cheesy guitar.
What a crazy bastard, can you imagine the shape you'd need to be in to accomplish that? - wonderboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I could do that, but I don't wanna.
- frascellyboy273, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4my god, that guys a beast, not too smart though
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7How come I haven't seen the other 999,999?
- fugazi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8hat the hell I expected to see some guy defining gravity by running up a mountain literally running. Then it turns out he was just climbing what the hell...
- whatthehell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3AWPSWAJSTII? (At what point should we all just start talking in initialisms?)
- jjk5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Whole bunch more vids on YouTube:
http://youtube.com/results?search_query=dan+osman&search=Search - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Just as well as anyone digging this comment down without reason is afraid to admit it.
- wolvyne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Holy crap hes quick. I think it would take me longer to fall that distance if I jumped off the top.
- ToddPM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Disclaimer: no way could I even hope to attempt a climb like that.
Disclaimerer: no way would i want to.
I wonder how many times he climbed that before, looking for the perfect handholds. It's obvious it wasn't like he happened upon this wall and decided to speedclimb it on an impulse. He probably climbed that face a hundred times, memorizing the route and where to find the best places to grab. You do something a hundred times, you're gonna be able to do it pretty quickly. - lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Holy sphincter!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5blocked for ignorance.
- batguano, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Seeker, A digg for one of the funniest comments I have read here.
- Rymep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I climbed that route about 3 years ago, I think it's been downgraded to a 5.6 or 5.7- It's a fairly simple beginners route.
