- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Oh yeah, this is smart - give a bunch of techies the notion to go out in the woods during the winter.
- elitexero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19I camped out for a Wii. That was enough winter camping for me.
- schroduggity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I do winter camping here in Alaska, I got a bivy sack and a -30F bag. we get more than 1000" of snow in the places I camp. we digg crazy sweet snowcaves and smoke chron and have sweet midnight snowboarding sessions with the northern lights goin nuts.
- BigSlacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I like winter camping. Very peaceful, beautiful snow covered terrain, stunning night skies, no bugs, and you don't have to haul water. You don't get cold with the right gear.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"If you 're fortunate enough to live somewhere with snow, why not go camping?"
Because it's cold, uncomfortable, not very fun, there's nothing to do, there's no reason to, we get enough of the cold, anyway, and oh, did I mention that it's cold? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You all forgot your bipedal sleeping bag warmer or in other words GIRLS!!!
I used to go winter camping all the time, Why because at 20 below wine will freeze into bandy and any girl thats there will crawl into a sleeping bag with you just to get warm. - Arnold22, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10This is what I love about digg there is so much different information offered. I have always wanted to do this but could never find information and then this pops up. Maby I won't die now :)

- kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So true with the gear. Learned that with the right gear you don't get cold. And it doesn't have to be high-tech. When I did my conscription in the Finnish army we had felted wool boots with big rubber boots over them (we called them turbos - becuase they made you feel so quick and nimble). Never ever got cold feet in those even when it was -15 F. And of course we always were layers layers layers of clothes. The Finnish army learned a thing or two in the Winter War. Only time I got cold on the body was when I couldn't change clothes for a long time and the moisture would just stay in them. I guess modern undergarments would have helped a bit but this was when it was really cold for a week or so.
- kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I went winter camping a lot for a short period. Didn't like it much I can tell you. Could have been the company though... for some reason the Finnish Army wouldn't let us sleep in, didn't provide scenic routes and there was a lot of equipment that we really didn't have use for that we should have left home if you ask me.
- arizonagroove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"If you're fortunate enough to live somewhere with snow, why not go camping?"
Because there's snow. - gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mon pays ce n'est pas un pays, c'est l'hiver
(My country it is not a country, it is the winter) - Lean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3After going backpacking for 12 days in New Mexico this summer I'd love to try winter camping/backpacking.
- johnpombrio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Heh. Taught a winter school class one year. Also did the Northville-Lake Placid trail in the Adirondacks in upstate NY with a two week cross country ski trip. That is like carrying ALL of the gear and sleeping outside for two weeks. Some memorable experiences. The half butter, half milk hot drink that was our bedtime snack. The time that the leader almost fell into a great hole that suddenly appeared over a swiftly flowing river that looked completely frozen over. Having our beards and mustaches thaw with two weeks of frozen food bits while in a restaurant at the end of the trip. Stay fed, stay covered, stay dry, and stay safe.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 i gave up at the handy avalanch shovel !
cold AND dangerous - SourWorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3fire
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Freeze, you.
- SloppyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why not go camping in the snow? I'll tell ya why... ITS FRIGGIN COLD! thats why.
- HomeGrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2gotta make sure we still got wireless access though..not to mention the power hookup so we can keep the laptops charged..
- gaoshan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I went camping in the snow once. Woke up in the wee hours of the morning to find the tent had blown away (it was an army style tent so the floor was separate from the rest of the thing... and someone had pulled the tent stakes out) and we had to get out of our bags in the 0 degree fahrenheight night, throw on boots and jackets and go hunt for the damn tent through several feet of snow and then set it back up. NEVER again.

If you think there is nothing to do outside then your probably the type that doesn't do anything fun when it's nice out either. - absolin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this guide is great, it's really well put together
- zadadka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What? Like Rogue River Canyon, Oregon?
- kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4even more important: keys to the ski cabin
- badfishmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great guide, thanks for the info. It is real hard but can be real rewarding as well. Hopefully my first true winter camping experience will be in the Adirondack mountains this March. I would rather camp in the snow than try and run a marathon in good weather. It's all about what you like to do to push yourself to the edge of your comfort zone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Cronus6
Places where it doesn't get below 0 ever were mostly unfarmable until the 20th century... deserts in California and the west and swamps in Florida. Also there were those pesky indians who killed settlers and no realistic upriver transportation to sell your crops until the mid-19th century. So settlers in the 17th century and so on didn't much choice. Places like New England have seen a lot of farms abandoned as less harsh areas became useable. - algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2doesnt sound fun.
- noouch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Winter camping is for non-geeks, our gear makes the snow go all melty and stuff.
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.digg.com/offbeat_news/Screw_Bar_Ice_Pop_Increases_Women_s_Confidence_at_Fellatio
I was hoping to parlay that one into some kind of "Korean popsicle" joke. - xtr3m, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Enough for now...
When is the next Nintendo console coming out, anyway? - tuaregorama, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Wow! I dont get it.
- spd998, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm really going to go camping in the cold.
- wiremonkeymommy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1used to go winter camping all the time, before we get ***** winters due to global climate change
- gparkla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I love this!!... It's great to see a posting about living your life and maybe going outdoors. You know... Instead of playing video games. The only time most "diggers" go camping is outside of a Best Buy waiting for a Wii. You know its true!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0here's my winter camping guide: motel
- omgcthulhu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah...Nothing particular, but still interesting for me.
- lazyman0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Horray for Florida home of Disney and no mother effing snow. Hurricanes sucks but hell at least we can see them coming.
- mntbikeracer1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Camping in the snow can be a ton of fun. But if you have little camping experience reading this stupid guide is not preparation enough, but one in the same a lot of you sound like huge wimps.
- Amadeus2490, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"If you 're fortunate enough to live somewhere with snow [...]"
Gee, I can't stand it when people have such a hard-on for snow; "oh, I love the snow!" Yes, and I also love the high heating costs and the risk of hypothermia. Not to mention the ice all over the roads, and all the people that are terrible at driving on it. So yes, i'm fortunate enough to have to pay 300 a month for my heating bill, thank you. Okay, okay. . .so I hate winter. I'd rather live someplace warmer than Ohio.
And yes, the idea of camping out in it is ridiculous. I don't care who you are. - afbase, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i've tried winter camping/hiking several times. I found out that you actually had to carry alot of extra clothing to survive as opposed to summer/spring camping, and the experience is never fun.
1. way too much gear to lug around.
2. it is never warm. (bipedal mummy bags + girl = great idea!!)
3. it sucks when clothes get wet. - begbegbegbegbeg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Boy, that describes Diggsters to a "t"!
- Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I'll go so far as to say there is nothing "fortunate" about living where it snows at all.
I've never understood why people settled in areas where it snows/sleets/or the temp drops below zero. If I were an earlier inhabitant of a new area like, say, Canada, after the first winter I'd have packed my crap and headed south. - tenaciousdino, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0i love camping during the summer. I usually hesitate to knock something i havent tried, but this just seems crazy. Cold, risky, and requires a bit of an investment for all that new gear. I like just being able to bring a tent, a sleeping bag, a cooler, and a grill/stove.
- Chrissilvanet, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Hahaha, I was waiting for the James Kim one liners to start rolling in, next week: "A Third Grader's Guide to Staying With Your Buddy"
- zerocomm, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1We need James Kim's input on this idea
- p0und, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3this should have been posted earlier so james kim could have read it.
