- jcgreenx, on 01/08/2009, -0/+23I really liked the first photo. Who knew boxers back then were gay?
- nahsrocketeer75, on 01/08/2009, -0/+16Found particularly interesting No. 17, the one with the 3 rings lined up side by each. I'd never seen that kind of setup before.
- ohnoerino, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12Put em up! Put em up!
- QsheiK, on 01/08/2009, -0/+11I admire these people who had a truly natural physique....back in the day where there weren't all these protein shakes, whey powders, and steroids or any other enhancements being used.
- pitchblack16, on 01/08/2009, -0/+11cool photos
- acmaurer, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10#21 - with the outdoor ring is pretty sweet

http://www.chicagotribune.com/media/photo/2008-08/ ... - dse78759, on 01/08/2009, -0/+6Jack Johnson in pic #2 looks like an ox. Why would anyone step into a ring with someone that big?
- dronesixtyten, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5My favorite was #13. Look at the expressions on those faces. The kid on the left is classic.
- diggum85, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5I think his parents knew when they named him Packey...
- Mackofalltrades, on 01/09/2009, -0/+4Watch the documentary on him. Probably one of the most interesting boxers ever.
- Larssonk22, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4ignore the sluggers, looks at those that quick and evasive footwork is an art, getting into perfect position to throw that shot, I admire the boxers that do it with ease like Mayweather and Ali.
- publishcron, on 01/08/2009, -0/+4#11, what a great shot
I wish boxing had some of the great characters that it used to. Seems like there are just too many divisions and belts now, and I wish you didn't have to get pay per view to watch all the good matches. They could actually take a page from the UFC's book as far as reaching new fans - fatfonzie, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Sure kind of easy to say now, but then? Anyways some nice pictures.
- ninerskeet, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3I love boxing!
- KingGorilla, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3like the living room curtains for example
- neocr0n, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3I still prefer boxing. MMA has caught on pretty quick and I do like it but I still think it has a long way to go.
- Jabb0, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3I love hovering Wii advertisements, they are the best!
- Callidus, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3Whey is produced from milk.
- tamakino, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Its amazing to see the changes in the physique of athletes over the century as we really didn't know anything about nutrition, lifting, and sport-specific exercises back then.
- fredtheman, on 01/08/2009, -0/+3now compare those pictures to a modern day boxer... these guys wouldn't make it past the first round.
- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2When you are that bad a mofo, you can wear what you want ;-)
- cfuse, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2We fight way better than you lot do.
- AddiX, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2picture number 5 with Jack Dempsey is amazing. It looks like they are really looking at you through the picture. It feels like there's ghosts in those pictures.
The 2nd picture with Johnson is awesome too, it really shows you what boxing was in those days with all the white people in the crowd in suits. The picture brings me to a whole different world. For those that don't know, Johnson was the first black champ in a time when black people were getting hanged. He had a white wife, and a white girlfriend and often told people if any white person called him a ***** he would KO them.
Boxing truly has the most amazing history and characters of any sport. The true American past time. - ninerskeet, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Treat it like boxing, stick and move, stick and move
- punkcat, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2***** that, keeps making click on a circuit city flash overlay.
- AddiX, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2one of the best things i seen posted in Digg in awhile!!
- Bender, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2How do you NOT have a picture of John Sullivan. You know the guy who fought in, and won, the last sanctioned bare knuckle brawl in the US.

- Ftown13, on 01/08/2009, -2/+3Alright, put 'em up! Put 'em up! Are you having a Bully day? I'm having a bully day. Is everyone having a bully day?
Bully!
Bully!
Yes, Bully!
Oh, thank god we live in this time! - alanocu, on 01/10/2009, -0/+1Back in those days, photos like that weren't uncommon. They would practically sit in each other's lap; although most likely they would be family members. Patrick "Packey" was married in 1914 to a woman named Margaret Loughran.
Here is one additional photo of him with 3 friends. circa 1920: Lightweight boxer Packey McFarland (left) - http://i39.tinypic.com/20g1vl5.jpg - Jareth86, on 01/08/2009, -1/+2Bully!
- kurupttek, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2wheres Rocky?
- immatellyouwhat, on 01/08/2009, -1/+2LLllllllllllllllllllllllllllleeeet's Get Ready to DDDDiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- geoboy, on 01/08/2009, -1/+2What's your point? Micro processors are produced from silicon. Just because they had silicon back in the day doesn't mean they made micro processors from it. I'm not sure when the benefits of whey protein were first realized or when it began to be used by athletes and bodybuilders. But I'm guessing it wasn't until the post World War II era.
- SemperFly, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1You guys wanna go do some curls?
- mapls, on 03/06/2009, -0/+0Boxing looks way cooler nowadays. Only the boxers are not so good. I hope that will change.
