- Stavrosian, on 02/06/2009, -2/+16I'm glad to see he made the right decision. There's nothing left to prove to anybody - undefeated world champion for more than a decade. He said in his autobiography that the last thing he wanted was to be one of the fighters who carries on a bit too long, takes a few too many blows to the head and is never quite all there for the rest of their lives. Fair play to him for sticking to his guns and not being tempted by the money.
- NMed04, on 02/06/2009, -0/+8I think that's a good decision to go out in this fashion... some athletes hang around, lose their luster, and just fade away. Besides, I'm sure that boxing takes quite a toll on the body... another good reason to call it quits "early."
- aduric, on 02/06/2009, -1/+7Joe, say it ain't so.
- inactive, on 02/05/2009, -2/+7what a shame... such an awesome fighter to watch
- phyx726, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3domination
- kjd84, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Not a shame at all! Celebrate his career! We don't want every fighter to be beaten senseless because they had that one last fight.
- bossm4n, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Give me a break. An aging Hopkins? The same guy who destroyed an undefeated titleholder (Pavlik) his next fight. If you think Joe never proved himself, you never watched him fight.
- slyzxx, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Undefeated i`d quit.
- Jacare, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Antonio Margarito, Paul Williams, Kelly Pavlik, Bernard Hopkins, Shane mosley, ricky hatton, Wladimir Klitschko are all still going strong. two extremely entertaining up and comers are Yuriorkis Gamboa and Andre Berto.
- Jacare, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1yes, williams, berto, gamboa, pavlik and cotto are under 30, while pacquiao, margarito and hatton are 30. klitschko is 32 and king of the hw division.
- ndcadzdsc, on 02/06/2009, -1/+2While there ARE a few pushovers on his record, and he didn't beat Hopkins or Jones in their prime, Calzaghe is still a great, classic boxer, and ALOT of fun to watch! I'm glad to see him retire at the top of his game, and not drag his career into embarrasment like some former greats (*cough* Tyson)! I've become more of an MMA fan over the last few years, but when it's good, and craptastic judges/promoters(*cough* Don King) don't assert undo influence, boxing can still be a great spectator sport!
- bunnybash, on 02/06/2009, -1/+2he spoke the truth though...
- Sheepsterbaby, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1I think you made a reference to Mike Tyson?
I'm not entirely sure, just a guess, shot in the dark. - ooxo, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1since when is "ain't" acceptable??
- octodd, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1I agree 100%. There is a good reason he retired. If he stuck around the fights werent going to be gimme fights and he had a higher chance of losing in his next few fights so he took the easy way out and retired undefeated.
He is a good boxer, but he will never be remembered as a great boxer. had he fought a few of the elite fighters he choose not to fight and retire he had a chance to be a great. - bossm4n, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1Well, we certainly have common ground regarding Manny. He's a witch and is without a doubt the reigning P4P greatest boxer on the planet.
- fs88, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Yea he fought an overweight Pavlik who was so slow I could have knocked him out. Not to mention Pavlik also had a bad elbow injury and was sick the night of the fight. The fight between Calzaghe/Hopkins was not really that great of an achievement simply because it was so close. Alot of people actually had Hopkins winning that fight too. Calzaghe only won because he threw about a thousand of those stupid little slap punches. He even admitted in the Roy Jones Jr countdown that he slapped a lot just so the judges would think he was throwing a lot of punches when Hopkins was on the ropes. Besides even if you count the Hopkins fight as proof of his greatness that was ONE FIGHT. Why do you think Manny Pacquio is the P4P champion and not Calzaghe? Because Manny is an actual fighter. He fights quality fighters in their prime anytime/anywhere and beats them. Ask any real boxing fan or even any fighter/trainer/commentator and most will agree that yea Joe is a champion but he isn't respected as a great fighter.
- sleepy35758, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1Best time to come out is when you're on top
- superterrorizer, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1I agree. He earned his legendary status. I'm glad he didn't burn himself out and fade away. He pure and simply owned.
- 1337d00d, on 02/06/2009, -0/+1saying it like he ain't never gonna come out of retirement 5 times
- bossm4n, on 02/06/2009, -1/+1...at being a plague on society, a total waste of stem cells and oxygen, raping women, being an overall douchebag.
- kyle343, on 02/06/2009, -0/+0Ledge!
- pandaboy99, on 02/06/2009, -1/+0Who are those guys? are any of them under 30?
- pandaboy99, on 02/06/2009, -4/+2Boxing is running out of super stars! They got to hustle up and bring in some new talent and names before mma takes over the combat sport to go to.
- saucy05, on 02/06/2009, -6/+1I'm still not convinced of this guys greatness. Most of his opponents were either no namers or out of their prime.
- bubblewang311, on 02/06/2009, -9/+4Mike Tyson is better
- fs88, on 02/06/2009, -8/+2Honestly Joe really never proved himself to me. Beating an aging Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. to end his career wasn't that impressive. Also openly bad mouthing boxing as dying sport that no one cares about, a sport that made him everything he is, was also a pretty douchey thing to do to.
- GoldenBoy1993, on 02/06/2009, -7/+1He was a good champion...to bad he spent most of his career fighting in europe......
he came to the usa and beat hopkins and roy jones when they were already 43 and 40 years old........his resume is pretty much trash sorry but i had to say it
kessler???lacy????40 year olds?? lol
