- vanguardanon, on 07/07/2009, -0/+21LeMond's win was incredible. The one thing they left out was his team. After his hunting accident LeMond couldn't get the lead position on a good team so he didn't have the support that other riders did. Every time he was in the lead his opponents had multiple people helping to reign him back in. Greg had to do it all on his own.
- Phi01, on 07/07/2009, -0/+14Avergage speed of 54.5 km/sec OMFG, i'm a cyclist and i cant even imagine having an average speed of that, and back in 1989... WOW
- Citationdriver, on 07/07/2009, -1/+13Let's see you do it, fatty.
- vchavanon, on 07/07/2009, -0/+11Normally it would not be allowed, but because he gained no advantage by going off-road (he wound up getting back on the road behind the group originally chasing him and Beloki) and because the alternative was crashing, the race committee allowed it.
- bradleybell2, on 07/07/2009, -0/+11Cutting the course is prohibited but in these circumstances, it was allowed..
No penalties because if he hadn't of diverted off course, he would have crashed.. The stage referee decided that he shouldn't be penalised as he gained no advantage and his decision was reasonable and fair. - oliphoto, on 07/07/2009, -1/+11#2 lance's look & #10 armstrong goes off-road are awesome!
- extratired, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8This list is retarded, no Indurain, Merckx only on nr 4, that clip of Armstrong on 10...
- vanguardanon, on 07/07/2009, -0/+8I did the conversion. That's 132,840 mph. Unless you meant 54.5 kph which would make it 36.9 mph.
- Alreadyinuse99, on 07/07/2009, -1/+8You are right about that. It takes a very self centered bastard to devote all that time and money to trying to find a cure for cancer. And you know what else? That ***** is an inspiration to millions of people around the world. I've met him a few times and he's even had the audacity to be a pretty nice guy. Such a prick.
- DjAshes, on 07/07/2009, -1/+8HE RIDES THROUGH A ***** FIELD! (#10)
- bradleybell2, on 07/07/2009, -1/+7You, my friend are the naive one.
Lance Armstrong has been tested 40 times this year.. Not tested? Shady doctors? I dont think so. - Alreadyinuse99, on 07/07/2009, -0/+6"hes not a real contender this year"
You must not be following the race. He's in 3rd place right now. - Krissam, on 07/07/2009, -3/+9Burried for bias... 2 armstrong, yet no Bjarne Riis?
How can they not have this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwHlCl2s0UM
Indurain's C-C-C-C-COMBOBREAKER! - EastCoastGnar, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5The Look really does deserve to be number one in my opinion. That video is as bad ass as a video full of men in spandex can be.
- stormgren, on 07/07/2009, -0/+5>> I can however remember him "missing" quite a few drugs tests and mysteriously going missing when he was called to give samples.
[Citation Needed] as these are put down as failed tests. - dougm68, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4It's funny because he probably isa fatty.
- Alreadyinuse99, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4"hes not a real contender this year"
You must not be following the race. He's in 3rd place right now.
Let me update that. As of a couple of minutes ago he is now in second place. Although they had to go down to the 100ths of a second to determine that. Not to bad for someone who is not a contender this year huh smart guy? - xutopia, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4I don't know who you are replying to. Check Armstrong's twitter feed. He tells people when he gets surprise visits.
- sunnycuts, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4That is a crazy avg. When I bike that is usually my top speed I cant imagine that being an average.
- Phi01, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4lol yes not per second, hahah, he isnt that fast.... 54.5 kph!!!
- COLiNx86, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4Yes thank you Thoku, exactly what I wanted to say.
I would bet you lots and lots of money that if they tested football players, track runners, baseball players, etc. like they test cyclist, then there would be a lot more of them banned than cyclist. Look at that one baseball player that was busted a while back (look it up I don't follow baseball so I don't know his name.). He was busted but they still talk about him on TV like he was the best, but he used steroids then admitted to it. And then all those track runners, no one is that fast and that big. Especially the women, women's arms aren't supposed to be that big anyways (there giant).
But don't get me wrong there's people in those sports who probably don't do anything, just like cycling. - deslock, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4I suppose there is a case for replacing the second Armstrong clip as @krissam suggests but I hardly think that spells a "strong American bias".
LeMond had the fastest speed time in any stage... ever, to win the race from a 50 second deficit.
The Armstrong offroad had to be in there in the top regardless. It was talked about endlessly for weeks and was very climactic.
So there was, what, one extra American clip there? I don't think you can blame them for having two Armstrong clips since he is the best the race has ever known.
Unless of course you have a strong anti-armstrong bias? - Thoku, on 07/07/2009, -0/+4Cycling is the sport where they check they most often for drugs. They do all they can to prevent doping and just because they catch a few bad eggs does not mean the rest of them are doping.
I believe you are the naive one to think there is such thing as a clean sport nowadays. Cycling at least bans those who do dope. - xutopia, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Definitely a strong American bias here. Armstrong is a great rider but I would have replaced that near-crash with that video of yours.
For those who do not understand French: Riis faked he was tired three times and attacked mercilessly again and again until everyone else was too tired to care. - jeriqo, on 07/07/2009, -0/+3Did he get any penalty for his off-road?
Is it allowed? - Thoku, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Agreed, and I would have to go down an 10+% to get that sort of speed.
- Epik, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3rjb4G8ZMI
I wish there was a better quality one. But this was pretty cool. - seanjohntx, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2This is one my memorable moments. Not because of the crash and the later nut rack but because Ullrich and Tyler Hamilton slowed down to wait for Lance. Ullrich could've tried to pull away and put some time between him and Lance but he didn't Hamilton also has to receive props for doing almost the whole tour with a broken collar bone.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrltVHjghsk - bigpappapunk, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2Thanks for saving me wasted time so I could get right to the good stuff.
- 1hrSleep, on 07/07/2009, -0/+2CRAAAP. =/ I'm not getting any of the live coverage and have to rely on recaps.
- xutopia, on 07/07/2009, -1/+3Indurain was an amazing rider but he never had any strong moments. He was a bore to watch. Show me one video where he showed some panache.
- fety, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1they forgot to mention Dave Watson's gap jump over the riders....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDLCuIlm8I0&fmt ...
oh well, he leaned back a little too much - ucffool, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1The Look in no way could be number one over LeMond. That's just incredible.
- vanguardanon, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1I just took a minute to check out the rest of these. #5 was seriously sad. Having said that, it's tough to be a champion unless you're at least a little bit selfish.
- ericdano, on 07/07/2009, -1/+2Best Sport Ever
- BenjB, on 07/07/2009, -1/+2Very Nice Indeed.
- eShinn, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1Yeah, no joke. Was falling asleep at the first vid.
- BurgGuy, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1Please, this is not about style or panache, its about going kicking ass fast on a bicycle over some mountains that makes every fiber in your body cry. Miguel held the record until Lance. Try going 130K (100M) fast on your bike in the hills and say what you're saying.
- fortheworld, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1He died alone, in a hotel room, on Valentines Day.
- Skewt, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1"Pantani's tale is ultimately tragic: dogged by allegations of doping, he gradually faded from the sport, competing only sporadically from 1999 to 2003. He entered counseling for clinical depression and eventually died of a cocaine overdose in 2004."
Man, that's sad. - fortheworld, on 07/07/2009, -0/+1That was supposed to be 1997 tour. My bad.
- fortheworld, on 07/08/2009, -0/+1I totally forgot about that. Proper sportsmanship right there.
- fortheworld, on 07/07/2009, -1/+1People need to remember the 147km lone breakaway of Cedric Vasseur in the 1197 TDF. He then held the yellow jersey for 5 days, including in the mountains. He was unknown then, and pretty much faded out after false doping alegations.
- fortheworld, on 07/07/2009, -0/+0Riis' win in 96 was definitely something special. I think Ullrich could have won that year as well - he looked so strong.
- dougm68, on 07/07/2009, -1/+1I think dudes that know how often other dudes get physicals are gay.
~owning gay diggers. - 50Arms, on 07/07/2009, -0/+0Awesome makes u want to ride
- xutopia, on 07/07/2009, -1/+1You should check out Bjarne Riis's look then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwHlCl2s0UM
They don't make more badass than this. - Kniveznor, on 07/07/2009, -4/+3Live Strong ftw. Lance is the man.
- Mattlikespeople, on 07/07/2009, -3/+014 times the speed of light
- inactive, on 07/07/2009, -9/+2He may well have been tested like crazy this year but hes not a real contender this year. He's just there to raise money for charity. He's not competing in the professional sense. Its just a lap of "honor" for old times sake. Of course he'll volunteer and submit to be tested like crazy now, its good press relations, and because he doesn't take any steroids any more, he's not a real contender.
So you are the one being naive kid.
Can you remember him being tested 40 times in the one year when he was competing to win back in the day? Nah me neither. I can however remember him "missing" quite a few drugs tests and mysteriously going missing when he was called to give samples. Google it. -
