If that isn't torture, perhaps you could walk us through what torturing a bull would entail, because I'm having trouble imagining it.

- N01SE, on 07/10/2009, -1/+4Okay, so I tried to find out why this custom was originally invented and it seems like there is no reason it is simply to move the bulls from their corral to the bullring where they are killed, and if you want to run with them you can which is apparently a very manly thing to do and women will me more inclined to go down on you or something.
So, some guy, not sure when, a long time ago, was like, "hey man, let's rally up some mean bulls, rile them up, release them and then run from them down a long series of blocked-off streets that funnel into a bullring, then we'll kill them with swords once we're inside the ring. Every year, I hope that those bulls just gore the ***** out of about 100 of those retards and make them wonder why they participate in such an asinine "event" while they lay on the street and choke to death on their own blood. Mostly the bulls run in a straight line and won't mess with people unless they are right in front of them. Also being drunk is the main reason people fall down and get trampled, more often than not by other people running from the bulls. The guy being flipped probably ran up and touched the bull....

- 1x253, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Then those are beginner bullfighters and teeny-tiny bulls compared to the bulls that would fight say in the Madrid Bull stadium (Plaza de Toros Madrid). They're not at all the size of the bulls that Jesulin de Ubrique (the MJ of bullfighting in Spain) would have fought. .
Those bulls that will die and the bullfighters that will kill them are very minor players on the bullfighting scene. Look at the scale of the size of the bull compared to the "gore-ees" and you'll realize they're not that big.
Upon reading this article I'm reminded that the bulls are distinguished by age. The ones in the encierro are usually very young indeed:

Exactly, "anyone" can participate. But I don't remember anyone ever killing a bull when I was in an encierro and I participated in a few when I lived in Spain. There might be some encierros where they do kill the bulls or (big shock) CNN might have gotten it wrong. I'll write my cousins in Spain and ask. I mean, one thing I'm damn sure of is that when I participated in encierros NOBODY was allowed to just walk up there with a sword b/c, frankly, while a certain number of those guys are trying to break into bullfighting as a career, many of them are just drunk fools. - 1x253, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1"... bullfighting is also just plain retarded."

It is a very strange mindset. My best guess is that it has something to do with TV programming that shows animal puppets talking like humans and so kids are raised up believing that these animals are on the same level as humans? So weird.. dog fighting is illegal yet I can turn on my TV and watch 2 guys kick and beat each other into a bloody mess while spectators jump up and down with glee. And if someone fights a couple of stupid pit bulls, they get thrown in jail. Hell... they will throw you in jail for FIGHTING CHICKENS!!! And what do they do when they confiscate fighting chickens ? They take them to a vet to "put them to sleep".

Actually, that's not right. The bulls that people run with are nothing like the Bulls that are put in Bullrings to fight. The Bulls that are used for bullfighting are massive Michael Jordan-like behemoths. The ones used for "running with the bulls" are more Rick Moranis-like and yet they can still kill people and do. If you were to have a running of the Bulls with the Bullfighting bulls you would have hundreds dead; the carnage would be inexplicably gruesome. It would make for a great dystopian plot, however! : )
Now, the Bulls that are used for bullfighting live a pretty sweet life up until that day and if they kill the matador they'll live a bit longer, too. However, they are pretty brutally tortured even before the matador begins his "fight": 1) the bulls balls are wound up to cause him excrutiating pain, otherwise he wouldn't be naturally that aggressive. 2) he is ceremonially mutilated to weaken him so that the matador will have a fighting chance and even then, sometimes it is not enough.
