No. 10 Houston Texans Football $1.17 billion - gincarnated, on 01/22/2009, -2/+16The wealth of the European soccers team is really increidble when you consider they are not franchised to their respective leagues. Bad results and they could find themselves dropped into the lower divisions. The NFL teams should consider themselves lucky. Not making enough money in this city? Pack up and move to a more lucrative area. What I wouldn't give to see the promotion/demotion system applied to American sports.
- cheese0089, on 01/22/2009, -0/+14He changed "Soccer" to "Football".

Ka-ching, bitches!"
I would like to thank fabkebab for the quick-hit list. Saves us all some time. - damack, on 01/22/2009, -6/+14Manchester United are probably the only real global brand on that list.
I remember watching Manchester United vs Chelsea and the commentator commenting on expected worldwide viewing numbers of upto a billion people.
Manchester United have popularity in far reaching pockets of the world from India to Africa and China. It's quite incredible.
Of course they can't commercialise a lot of those regions so their missing out on a lot of revenue due to the location of some of their fans. - spect3r, on 01/22/2009, -0/+7I thought Manchester City would be the richest, in theory, because of being funded by Abu Dhabi United Company and having access to alot of cash..
- arizona01, on 01/22/2009, -2/+9Bill Gates could buy all those teams.
- Tron007, on 01/22/2009, -1/+8glad to see the TRUE football on top
- EQGelu, on 01/22/2009, -0/+7GIve me lists not paragraphs!
- theg3neral, on 01/22/2009, -1/+7Real football aka soccer FTW!
- EnderMB, on 01/23/2009, -1/+7Dugg for being right.
- kesin, on 01/22/2009, -1/+6cuz
- DarkStar3333, on 01/22/2009, -1/+6I expected to see the Detroit Lions on this list. After all they provide the world with countless hours of laughter.
- DickyT83, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5My assessment completely.
- george2gfm, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5everything's bigger in Texas?
- dudestuff, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5My thoughts precisely.
- frenchmailman, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4Interesting how the teams that are worth the most all play in stadiums, as opposed to arenas (hockey, basketball). I thought that the LA Lakers or the Toronto Maple Leafs would be worth more than the Houston Texans, but apparently not.
I like the idea that the pro-sports economy could be a bubble. For years now we've had ups and downs in the economy and meanwhile the professional sports teams never really had a crisis (not counting lockouts, since those are essentially fights within each league to determine who gets a bigger slice of the money cake).
Or maybe it's not a bubble and the sports economy is just confirming the old roman saying, "panem et circenses" - shamos, on 01/22/2009, -5/+9Why do you call this rugby with helmets thing football?
- cowboy86, on 01/22/2009, -1/+5My sentiments exactly.
- rocketman42, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4Yeah, I was expecting the Harlem Globetrotters to be on the list, too.
- mrnobody546, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4shut up ya ***** Hammer
- sumsuni, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3i like how 4 of the teams are from new york area alone.
- Supernova36, on 01/22/2009, -2/+5I think you'll find Barcelona's brand is worth substantially more than a million dollars..
Plus, there is less competition in the world of American football when compared to 'soccer' so more chance for money. Think about any major city in Europe and there are probably multiple soccer teams, wheras US cities tend to have 1 team for each sport (with exceptions). - Dhekke, on 01/22/2009, -2/+5I think Real Madrid also has a global reaching brand... So does Barcelona (even though it isn't worth a million dollars)
I also think it says something when the list is dominated by sports that only reach a small demographic, specially compared to football (soccer)... - Fishn2, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3My evaluation specifically.
- eastwood24, on 01/22/2009, -2/+5Not one team from California.
- Jagot, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3Manchester City have the most amount of capital available to them, but it does not make them the most valuable. Loot at it in the sense that you would have to pay more to buy United than City.
- neocr0n, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3You can fit more in a stadium, so... not that interesting really.
- kamakazitp, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2you're not my guy, buddy.
- bobloblaw4, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Arsenal 7th on the list but can't afford to pay for Arshavin. *****' hell.
- Peko, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2It's a bit apples to oranges - but it would be interesting to (try to) compare F-1 to the members on this list. F-1's revenue streams seem a lot harder to quantify.
If you had a to make a financial magical choice - would it be better to own F-1 or the NFL? - Wubsy, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2It's hardly a great name.
Deportivo Wanka is much better. Wiki it. - meruru, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2You are crazy. Even the Detroit Lions, who have never been a great team, make a profit every year.
- Cottrell36thAIR, on 01/22/2009, -3/+5WTF this article is outdated... Manchester CITY became the richest team in the world a couple of months ago, when they got taken over by a Multi Billion pound take over.... They are offering £110 Million, for just 1 player... That's how rich Manchester CITY is.
I am afraid to say, being a United fan, that City is above them, in the riches scale.
EDIT: by the way I looked it up city have $26 billion - beatlemaniac007, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2A lot of european football clubs have popularity in far reaching pockets of the world.
AC Milan (fine inter and juve too)
Bayern Munich
Real Madrid
Barca
Liverpool - theg3neral, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2No Boston Red Sox, AC Milan, Liverpool, or Barcelona?
- EnderMB, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Who?
- lepetitmousse, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2I was not expecting football teams to be worth that much at all. I always assumed baseball teams were worth more since i live in red sox/yankees territory.
Then again, i also own a houston texans hat. - xyqxyq, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2It doesn't work that way. It's about revenue and "fair market value."
- AlterLite, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2I see what you did there
- rblancarte, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1Tell me about it. I was shocked about this entry.
- hammburglar, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1is there a wrong choice to this one?
- Jeffler, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1On paper, about $300M. If I recall correctly, they're 4th in the NHL (Leafs[By a mile]/Habs/Rangers/Wings)
- cdubd, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1pretty ridiculous
- Jeffler, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1These are on estimated values, not what they'd actually go for. The Leafs estimated value is $460 million, for example, but I guarantee MLSE wouldn't sell for less than $1, maybe even $2 billion. For the amount put in, I seriously doubt there is a sports team in the world that prints money like the Toronto Maple Leafs. They could sell pre-broken condoms if they had Leafs logos on them.
- corbinat, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1Because long long ago when the rich played games on horseback this game was played by the peasants on foot. I guess the name just stuck even though the game got changed up quite a bit since then.
- impei, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1MLSE includes the Raptors, the Rock, Toronto FC, the ACC, LeafsTV and Raptor TV. The Leafs do not have the television revenues of the NFL teams or the international reach of the european football clubs to be in the same class as these teams.
- bld1777, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1i think this is talking about money generated by the team
not money that the owners have
and thats why manchester city isnt on the list -
