- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Sorry, I didn't see a freakin' marching band on the field in that video, so it's got nothing on The Play
Moreover, plays like that are common in Rugby because that's how that game is played. In American football lateral passes are rare. Show me a rugby play where one player goes 60 yards to score WITHOUT passing the ball, which is more common in American football.
They are different sports. What's amazing in one isn't going to be amazing in the other. An Ace is fairly routine in tennis, but virtually unhead of in ping-pong. - OverloadUT, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Seriously. Stanford actually tried complaining that there was interference so the play should be invalid. But the interference was from their OWN BAND!
- Midnightbrewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17"I can actually see John Elway's point-of-view, that a touchdown can't be scored when there are more than 22 people on the field."
Except that the people in question were not members of the football team, and were part of his school to boot. It was the band's own damn fault and they shouldn't have been where they were. If the refs had let it stand based on the too-many-people rule, you'd be setting a precedence to sabotage future games on purpose by the same technique. The message was quite clear: "If you're not a player, stay off the field." - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I wonder what was going through that saxaphone player's mind when he was being laid out - right before he hits the ground...
W....T...FU... - ani-pockdotnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Here at Cal (UC Berkeley), we call this "The Play". You can even buy shirts diagraming how the play was carried out (including the impact with the unfortunate saxophone player from Stanfurd's band)
- rprins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"The Bears Win! The amazing, sensational, dramatic, hart wrenching, exciting, thrilling finish in college football."
I couldn't agree more. This is pretty amazing. Right up there with Flutie and his hail mary pass when he was with Boston College. - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Not really a football fan but I digg that. Is it normally legal to plow through the band to get to the end zone?
- soapdev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10basically if the clock stops, u wait till the play is over. once the play is over, the game is finished.
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12that's why we have the saying "it ain't over until it's over". Assuming you won is un sportsman like conduct and they got owned for it.
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11yeah, i'm sure the "calue" of digg took a major hit...
Shut the ***** up already. You don't like it, don't digg it... there's an option to filter out only technology news if that's all you want to see. - KMehthas, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14I HATE football, but thats an awesome clip. Dugg.
- soapdev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://youtube.com/watch?v=FPaLGvZK--c&mode=related&search=
another version :) - RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Overload - yeah, but that's not the Stanford players' fault. I can actually see John Elway's point-of-view, that a touchdown can't be scored when there are more than 22 people on the field. However, I'm glad the refs let it stand because the play was just too awesome to be anything but a touchdown.
- LexisNexis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Dude you're fricking stupid. This was in the Sports Videos section, it was in 1982, before many diggers were born, not everyone watches football but we can appreciate plays like this.
- MagicBobert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yep, it was a trombone player, not a sax player.
- ani-pockdotnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6well the band wasn't supposed to be on the end zone. Stanfurd thought they had it, so the band started their mob formation in preparation for celebrating...
- Joe091, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Does ANYONE read their headlines before they post them!?
- dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Since when is Digg a news site? From the "About Us" page:
"Digg is a user driven social content website. Ok, so what the heck does that mean? Well, everything on digg is submitted by the digg user community (that would be you). After you submit content, other digg users read your submission and digg what they like best. If your story rocks and receives enough diggs, it is promoted to the front page for the millions of digg visitors to see.
What can you do as a digg user? Lots. Every digg user can digg (help promote), bury (help remove spam), and comment on stories... you can even digg and bury comments you like or dislike. Digg also allows you to track your friends' activity throughout the site — want to share a video or news story with a friend? Digg it!"
So, this post, while not news, is well within the scope of what Digg is. And I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who haven't seen this clip, especially those around here that aren't old enough to remember such games. - fahadmp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5American football kicks ass!
- thehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love that part -- every time I see it, I think about that guy. You know, he's somewhere in life and maybe has an interview for a job or something and someone invariably asks him the, "tell me something interesting about yourself," question and he says: "Well, I don't know if you have ever seen the the video, but when Cal beat Stanford in '82 -- yes, 'The Play' -- well the unfortunate member of the band who was rendered unconscious by an overzealous athlete in the final seconds -- that was me."
- nickconsumtion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Okay folks, here's the deal...
According to the rules, the officials could have called a penalty on Stanford for interfering with the play. In fact, they could have awarded Cal the touchdown even if they hadn't actually reached the endzone, because of the interference from the band and the rest of the Stanford team. There was an interview with the head ref (portions available on Wiki) where he said he was relieved to learn that Cal reached the endzone, because before he was told that by the other officials, he was preparing to rule it a touchdown on interference and knew that he would be hated for doing so. So all the Stanford folks who whine about knees down and forward laterals is moot, because by the players and band running onto the field before the game was officially over would have handed the game to Cal anyway.
-Nick, Cal class of '97 - RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Also, a hail mary pass can't really be considered a showcase of skill. There is a ton of luck involved in that too.
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It was a trombone player
- dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Reading takes time. That's why CAPS has been allowed so long. Why waste ten seconds checking over what you type when you can just look like a douche instead?
(For those who missed it, my reply is sarcasm; read your posts, people. Misspelling a word is one thing, using the wrong word or plainly wrong grammar... you know things like "best ending ... every," well, you drag the world down with you) - spadgos, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Seriously, I'm not just trolling here, but if you watched that and thought it was even remotely interesting, *watch a game of rugby league*. Any game. Tries (the equivalent of a touchdown) even better and more skillful than that happen EVERY game.
Don't believe me? Watch this video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=xTXcDLRmA_E
In the dying seconds of the deciding match of the State of Origin, Queensland makes a "60 yard play" which goes through 10 players (out of 13 on the field) to score and win the series. Just watch it, seriously. - mylavask86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ameircan football is amazing. It is coaches doing a chess battle with players executing their moves. Can't beat it.
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why would they have left early when Cal was winning by just one point with just 53 seconds left?
- talman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Pardon my ignorance of American Football, but wasn't there 4 seconds left on the clock and it took them longer than that to get the ball and run it to the end zone?
- Alphateam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If the clock hits ZERO and a play is still in motion, the play is still good until the play ends.
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3While I agree that people who put "The Best Ever" in their titles to get more diggs are annoying, most people who follow college football do agree that this is Best Play Ever.
- andrewrocks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That ***** was legit as hell.
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2holy ***** O_O
- kigabit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Of course there was a certain amount of luck involved... as in anything in life. But, Cal had actually practiced this play before the game, and executed it beautifully. Also, there didn't seem to be a large enough concentration of Cardinals toward the end, when the band got in the way, to have taken down the ball carrier anyway.
- Larke2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i almost didn't watch it because i saw john elway. i'm glad i stayed for the happy ending. :)
- skeesicks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Robopimp - "Show me a rugby play where one player goes 60 yards to score WITHOUT passing the ball, which is more common in American football."
To be honest, that's not particularly uncommon in rugby. Without timeouts and with play not stopping as frequently for as long, you can suddenly find yourself in a lot of space, particularly on the counterattack. Here are two of over 90 yards

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dogoCBGWviw
In any case you're right - different things are special in different sports, and I've never seen anything like this in American football. - OverloadUT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My parents were both at that game. My father likes to brag that he actually saw The Play live. He also said that a LOT of Cal fans had already left the stadium before The Play began so they missed out on seeing it (people often leave early when the outcome is a sure thing to try to beat traffic hell,) but most people who were at the game say they saw it anyway because it would be just too damn embarrasing to say you left early and missed THAT.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2holy crap. the play was great, but the band was priceless.. poor kid got decked in the end zone, though
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow...Just wow. I have heard of this play before, but never actually got to see it.
- LexisNexis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Jesus christ, he still doesn't get it.
- Khamel83, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i like how only one Stanford fan has mentioned the illegal forward lateral.
great play (i don't think the best) but no matter how great it was, it would have been negated if there was instant replay.
the lsu hail mary play from a couple years ago was better IMO
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZR-H-FQDenw - nugge7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yah, but there's no band. You lose! Good day, sir!
- LunarOcean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll trust ESPN's analyists over random fans of any particuar sport.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/sportSkills
There's arguments to be made against several aspects of that, but I think it's more or less accurate. - DrDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a UMiami alumnus I can honestly say that I hate that Flutie clip. They show it 100 times a football season, and it kills me every time.
Most people don't remember that the game before this one Miami lost the largest halftime lead (31-0) to loose to Maryland. What a horrid set of games for a Miami fan. - Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dont really care much for football. I dont hate it or the people that like it but it just doesn't interest me. That being said, I thought this clip was amazing, and I have never seen it before today. I'd say Videos like that make me want to check out football again.
So stop thinking Digg revolves around you and consider that not everyone has seen the things you have.
http://rampant.amplitude-x.com/?p=49 -- No I'm not trying to spam my blog, just something I wrote last month. A bunch of randomness really... - ig33k010011, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that will always be the most incredible play for the rest of this earth's existence-- even 1000 years from now when people are playing space ball.
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1The best mortgage rates, refinance, home loan, real estate, realty
http://tophomemortgageloan.com/ - borb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow...the entire clip I was sitting there thinking the big deal was in Elway's gain...then the last play happened and I lost it.
- awm4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was 4 secs. left. In American Football as long as the play starts before the clock runs out the play is allowed to come to a finish no matter how long it takes.
- bombcar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+153 seconds on the clock is not 53 seconds of real time (the clip is 6 minutes long).
Many people will leave early if there team is losing or winning. Heck, the only time I've seen a baseball game filled to the ninth is playoff games, ties, or record-breakers. -
