- padrebuf, on 01/01/2008, -1/+65this is a great story and i'm sure it's true, it just sounds like it was written by a high schooler.
- playaj20008, on 01/01/2008, -2/+59So he did nothing but jog for over 130 hours? How is that possible.
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -2/+44Guarantee they make a movie out of this one. I'm thinking Disney and the farmer from Babe plays the guy. That Babe, he sure was a smart pig
- RonObvious, on 01/01/2008, -2/+42He didn't say WHY the sheep were running from him for days.
- imcostalong, on 01/01/2008, -0/+32Beats the hell outta shooting at kids picking shrooms

- deff, on 01/01/2008, -0/+18I.. I don't know how to... to, uh... Tell you this, but, Cliffs dead, man.
- egonSchiele, on 01/01/2008, -0/+16when Cliff Young does pushups, he's not pushing himself up, he's kicking Chuck Norris in the face.
- Myztry, on 01/01/2008, -0/+16Lots of great long distance runners train with animals. It's much safer to be chasing sheep than be running from Kenyan lions though.
- mearom, on 01/01/2008, -4/+19Ron Paul
Sorry, had to say it - UnterDenLinden, on 01/01/2008, -0/+14Well you should, because it's true.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Young_%28athlet ... - jhuebel, on 01/01/2008, -1/+15So, in the area of the US I live in, I actually overheard someone say this:
"Ya know, the way ya keep um from runnin' is to stick their back legs into yer boots."
WTF? - Misaiato, on 01/01/2008, -0/+14I'll buy the book, watch the movie in theatres, buy it on DVD, and I hope all the proceeds go to the same kids Cliff tried to help. /standing ovation
- THEROC, on 01/01/2008, -0/+14lol, that was random.
- stevea1210, on 01/01/2008, -0/+13Wait a minute, I know this one.... It was the rabbi right?
- aukxsona, on 01/01/2008, -0/+13His endurance is amazing. I couldn't do that for 12 hours let alone 5 days!
- deff, on 01/01/2008, -4/+16I'd really like to believe my government isn't run by crooks. But, it is.
- craznar, on 01/01/2008, -2/+13The story is entirely true, I remember seeing it on the news at the time.
Here is a link to a news story about his life and death :

- KingGorilla, on 01/01/2008, -1/+11No you didn't
- craznar, on 01/01/2008, -0/+10Try again, the digg URL interpreter broke my first go:
http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/11/07/10680 ... - langzaiguy, on 01/01/2008, -0/+10Bad ass. Favorite quote from the article: "He finished the 875-kilometre race in 5 days, 15 hours and 4 minutes. Not knowing that he was supposed to sleep during the race, he said when running throughout the race, he imagined that he was chasing sheep and trying to outrun a storm."
- headzoo, on 01/01/2008, -0/+10Did it even cross you mind to google his name?
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -0/+10But some people are witches. They should be hanged.
- TalksInMaths, on 01/01/2008, -0/+10It involved running or cycling (and in some cases swimming) to mind-boggling distances. For running, the most common ultra race is 50K - that's a full marathon and another 6 miles. But there's also races of 50 miles and 100 miles. To find the two big ones, google "Western States 100" or "Badwater" and you'll see. There's also some ultra races for time, like 24 hours.
In cycling, ultra cycling starts at going beyond 100 miles. Double centuries (200 miles) is the most common. Two big ones, google "RAAM" or "Furnace Creek 501". - jimmiss, on 01/01/2008, -0/+9I've heard this story a few times over the years and it's always good to hear.
- aflaks, on 01/01/2008, -0/+9its just as possible as being a life long potato farmer
- Tyrghast, on 01/01/2008, -1/+10says the guy on digg who is spending his time reading comments and replies to comments...
- SnarkFish, on 01/01/2008, -0/+9whoever wrote this keeps saying "the race takes 5 days"
then says he beat the race record by 9 hours with a time of 5d15h
that would make the best time up to his run at 6 days
maybe i'm nitpicking - avatarpalin, on 01/01/2008, -1/+10The only trouble is that is quoted in saying that he 'lives on a ranch'. In Australia we don't call Farms a Ranch. We use terms like, station, farm, property... I can only assume its be Americanised...
...ooooh I have a hang over, why does that matter? - TalksInMaths, on 01/01/2008, -2/+11Good article!
I've participated in ultra-runs and have been crew for ultra-cyclists and basically NO ONE sleeps any more. They go through hallucinations and crazy mood swings, but guys like Cliff in the article, proved that it can be done and has now become standard practice. RAAM has been won on less than 24-hours of sleep (that's 3000 miles, over 9 days, avg less than 3 hours/night sleep) and "short" races like The 501 (501 miles across Death Valley) are impossible to win if you stop for any length of time. - dn11, on 01/01/2008, -0/+8Having met ultra marathon runners and extremely fast hikers on the pacific crest trail - I completely believe this story. this is the same phenomenon where a very fast walker who keeps an even pace will always beat a runner across these sort of long distances - and the speed record for the 200 mile John Muir Trail was previously held by a man in his 60s
- inactive, on 01/01/2008, -3/+11***** CHUCK NORRIS!
- bullox, on 01/01/2008, -1/+9you're not your
- avatarpalin, on 01/01/2008, -0/+8I saw it on the news daily when it happened.... its true
- tbranch227, on 01/01/2008, -1/+9This is truly inspirational! Definitely a lesson in mind over matter.
- Ithaxa, on 01/01/2008, -0/+8i cant find a video of the "young shuffle", i want to see what it looks like and if its worth emulating
- has2k1, on 01/01/2008, -0/+8Wow. A person of search extraordinary ability yet remained humble and modest even when fame came knocking on his door. Now, compare that to todays' athletes.
- Majhem, on 01/01/2008, -0/+8I have memories of that race from news casts in the early 80's as a child.
100% true story... to the point that the "Cliff Young Shuffle" was not really being designed for wind resistance and physical dynamics, but more so that the freakin' rubber GUMBOOTS he ran in wouldn't fall off his feet! Has anyone ever tried running in those things? He should be remembered for that if nothing else.
Interesting that he has had to run everywhere his whole life, kinda explains his level of endurance. - UnterDenLinden, on 01/01/2008, -1/+9Only 20 minutes before someone brings up government/politics on an unrelated topic...
Record? - Gigabutt, on 01/01/2008, -0/+7"The Long Walk" by Stephen King/Richard Bachman anyone?
- Aensland, on 01/01/2008, -0/+7Athletes talk about being in "the zone".
- Chameleongoo, on 01/01/2008, -1/+7His agent would have to be real ***** good... Because the guy is god damned under six feet of dirt, RTFA?
- TotalHalibut, on 01/01/2008, -2/+8Spend less time on Digg and maybe you could.
