- mlssls, on 08/08/2008, -1/+17wow, thirteen random pictures with almost no description, and never an argument for why any of the matches are "important". that was really neat.
- WalkerTXclocker, on 08/08/2008, -4/+17#1 should have been Shamrock vs Gracie.
I miss the days when it was more amateurs, no weight classes, and they fought for the glory not the money. - PullingTeeth, on 08/08/2008, -8/+19What's with the hate on the UFC? It's much better than boxing or any of the fake stuff.
- Gndoab, on 08/08/2008, -4/+15Buried for 13 pages.
- Trunkhouse, on 08/08/2008, -2/+11Terrible list.
- Pongo0415, on 08/08/2008, -1/+9I get the feeling Maxim just picked 13 semi-random UFC fights to get people to click through 13 pages of ads.
- Ellrick, on 08/08/2008, -3/+10Matt Serra gets lucky and it makes the list?
These people dont follow the sport. - nkstn, on 08/08/2008, -5/+12Wow.. I guess we have a lot of ice skating watching men on digg today. UFC is awesome!
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 08/08/2008, -1/+6True, but there would be no UFC right now if they kept that format. They were a dying company that was about to go under. They could not get anywhere until they created weight classes and followed a boxing style rank system. That is the only way they could get permissions and venues from the boxing commissions.
- Aaronontheweb, on 08/07/2008, -11/+15The #1 most important fight should have been the finale for the end of the first season of the Ultimate Fighter - Griffin vs. Bonner - no one would have ever even watched UFC were it not for how spectacular that fight was and how it built so much more anticipation for the reality series. Remember - the UFC was something that a bunch of die-hards watched prior to the reality series. It was the reality series that catapulted the league into prime time.
- badwithcomputer, on 08/07/2008, -2/+6Wait just a minute...Who the hell do you think you're calling a moron?
- AmyVernon, on 08/07/2008, -2/+5why, oxy, of course.
- axpdocbrown, on 08/08/2008, -4/+7How dare you post this article on Digg. It's not about Steve Jobs or Obama! If it doesn't mention the I-phone or have a pejorative reference to McCain I won't read it!
Seriously though I agree Aaronontheweb, should be Griffen vs. Bonnar. Without that fight the company would still be in the red ink. - Takfam, on 08/08/2008, -1/+4Forrest Griffin taking the belt really cemented the show's legitimacy too. In a landscape of shows like The Apprentice where applicants have to perform wacky stunts for what I assume is a janitor's position in Trump Towers, The Ultimate Fighter is more of a skills competition than a reality show. Unlike so many reality shows out there where the prize is a shot at the big time, the winner of TUF is actually prepared for the big time. That's probably a large part of the appeal.
- chispito, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Some people don't like Boxing or the fake stuff, either. I like UFC well enough, but I'm not a fan of the three hour PPV that features about 30 minutes of decent fighting.
- chispito, on 08/08/2008, -1/+4"no one would have ever even watched UFC were it not for how spectacular that fight was"
That was only three years ago. Just because you didn't watch it prior doesn't mean other people didn't. - Surfrock66, on 08/08/2008, -0/+3Watch a fight nowadays, if you cut your opponent, you better believe they attack the cut. And look at how Forrest attacked Rampage's leg after he hurt it.
- Bordak, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3What an offensively bad list. 6 of the matches on their "most important" list are nearly irrelevant to their weight divisions, and then the couple they do manage to call correctly, are put in an absurd order.
I shouldn't be surprised, it is Maxim afterall, and they are catering to morons that watch the sport for a brawl, and not the technical aspects. (the "frat boy special", if you will) - chicagodj, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2Please dont digg me down it was a serious question from someone who doesn't know anything about the UFC.
- Pinkertinkle, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2Blah blah blah fanboy
- tontobalboa, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3Jesus... what a lousy list. Those are all exciting an entertaining fights, but important? A few... maybe.
Where's Randy v. Chuck 1, Mo Smith v. Mark Coleman, Frank Shamrock v. Ortiz, etc.
Damn, Maxim is a terrible magazine. - gutterboy, on 08/08/2008, -7/+9Love UFC but buried for Maxim. Sorry.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2Dana White has made comment that that was the most important fight in UFC history, because it brought UFC to mainstream media. If this list were ACTUALLY about important fights, and not just a random compilation, it probably would've recognized that.
- TCFrancis, on 08/08/2008, -4/+6What about Dan Severn vs The Human Ragdoll? I can't remember the dude's name, I just remember the fight. The poor bastard kept getting German suplexed all around the octagon. That was one of the last David vs Goliath fights and weight classes were instituted soon after. Isn't it fights like this that should be considered "important", fights that changed the very foundation of the sport and created the product that exists today?
- icurnvs, on 08/08/2008, -0/+2Ehh this is a pretty subjective list. Some would agree with you; some would say it's because of fighters like Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz. And many others would say something totally different.
- Takfam, on 08/08/2008, -1/+3Smash TV?
"Big money! Big prizes! I love it!" - aklu, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1I dugg you up because I couldn't agree more.
I want someone to name three world class fighters who haven't ever fought in the UFC. There are plenty to chose from. I can do it... can anyone else?
MMA != UFC
***** TUF fans. - aklu, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1But I like the semi-nakedness of the semi-hot women on the cover!
- Ellrick, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Boxing isnt a sport? Durrr durrr.
- aklu, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1I hate you for being right. I'm one of those die hards who has watched UFC FOREVER. I love the sport, but I think all the TUF fans who don't know ***** are ruining my sport!
You're smart though for recognizing the truth. I have to give you that.
If you watched the last Affliction PPV event though, you'd realize MMA is only just beginning to blossom. It's not going anywere. I think the UFC definitely has some competition now. I haven't seen an event put on by the UFC that could rival the last Affliction event for quite awhile. - Ellrick, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1I wasnt saying they are synonymous, and UFC is the alpha and omega of MMA, I was just defending the ufc and arguing that they do indeed fight mixed martial arts. Maybe I missed the point of the original post though.
Im a former Pride fanboy, Ive followed the sport since I was a kid. Back up off my sack.
I would say UFC can lay claim to the best lightweight division, its at least arguable. BJ Penn would destroy Aoki, Alvarez, and Hansen if you had dream in mind when you say that. - troyfoley, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1that was stupid.
- yohnstoppable, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1i mean to say mma is in no way synonamous with the ufc. oh well
- machobullshit, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1How is Matt Hughes vs Royce Gracie not on the list? It popped the biggest buy rate at the time: 600,000. It really put forth the format of hyping fights that they have now, with the count down special before hyping up a rivalry that the average fan can follow instead of catering to the hardcore fans.
- Nooze2k, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJmpBhWCbGc
- subliminalurge, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Not sure I agree.
I'd have to go with Rampage vs Griffin. I'll explain why. TUF opened up the sport to a much wider audience. Griffin winning the belt legitimized the talent pool coming from the show.
If you define "important" as helping to ensure the UFC's continued existence, then if that fight isn't the most important, it's at least got to be in the top 3.
Maybe not the "best" fight, most "anticipated" fight, or even the most "entertaining" fight. But it was sure as hell a damned important fight. - aklu, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Civilization didn't die with Rome. Your analogy is fail.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2I'm with ya brother, but like gay-assed wrestling before it, this travesty will just have to run its own 10 ten year course into oblivion....
- dysonlu, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1You're new to Maxim?
- chicagodj, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Thank you. That's exactly what I was wondering. As someone else pointed out to me it always seems to be about grappling and submission instead of injuring your opponent and putting that injury in so much pain they back down. Dont get me wrong I know that submission moves hurt or cut off oxygen but to me it's more entertaining to see someone pounding on an opponents injury than to see two grown men trying to hold each other in painful positions.
- inactive, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2I guess if you don't like truth you can always suck Mike's *****, good job ma6ic.
- yohnstoppable, on 08/12/2008, -0/+1I guess people don't like to read. I never said Pride went under, because of the ufc. I said without the ufc succeeding, new orgs would not have sprang up.
People saying "ufc didn't kill pride, durrr" are ***** retarded in this conversation, because that furthers MY point that mma would be dead without the ufc. Without the ufc, you are saying pride would have died anyway. So without tuf, pride would still be dead, the ufc would also be dead, affliction/strikeforce/elite xc wouldn't exist, so what ***** mma would still be around? Dream is on the verge of dying as well, so there would be no US mma, and there will shortly be no japanese mma either. Who would be around? Learn to ***** read, and comprehend that, and you'll feel foolish for arguing with it.
The stupidity around here is legendary at times, and reading comprehension just plain sucks. This isn't sherdog, where any compliment of ufc or pride means "zomg you are an elitist/noob, and I hates you for liking the org I don't like". - yohnstoppable, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1"Pride FC didn't go down because of no one watching MMA... it went down because the promoters were Yakuza, and the tv networks didn't want to be seen associating with a criminal organization."
I know why pride went under. My point is Pride DID indeed go under. If the ufc failed, who would be supporting mma in America? No one. And Dream is about to lose it's tv deal and go under as well, so mma is all but dead in japan at this point as well.
If the ufc failed, affliction, elite xc, and others wouldn't exist. pride failed, and now dream is failing. Who would be around right now if the ufc failed?
MMA would be dead right now without tuf. - inactive, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Dana White is a business man and the president of a recently successful company. You can't bash on him for selling prime advertising space.
- speedk0re, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1we want your soul
- dysonlu, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Yeah, young boys should instead spend time with you so you can show them your "manliness".
- Takfam, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1Don't get me wrong, Dana White is a hell of a business man, but he's also a bit of a whore. Nothing wrong with that, but there's no reason to make him out to be better than he actually is.
- Ellrick, on 08/08/2008, -1/+2All football is, is run, run, run, pass, pass, pass, maybe with some field goals and end zone dancing here and there.
Look I can do it too!! - gmanolatos, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1If you read it, it's the fight where GSP defeated Serra.
- chicagodj, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1I wasn't talking about killing people I was talking about the potential to seriously get injured. As in aiming to break a rib instead of it happening by chance. Or aiming to fracture an arm.
