- Egotrippin, on 06/25/2009, -0/+22The 72 Olympics one was an abomination.
- beegee82, on 06/25/2009, -0/+12Because there's nothing more American than Diego Maradona. In Mexico.
- TinternAbbot, on 06/25/2009, -1/+10Everybody knows that taking Ryan Leaf 2nd overall is the worst call in sports history.
- marshdabeachy, on 06/25/2009, -0/+9Thank you for your comment. I'm excited to learn you are not interested in the content of this story but are still interested in telling us you are not interested.
Are there any other stories you are not interested in? - Bonesy17, on 06/24/2009, -2/+10The Kobe Bryant elbow on Mike Bibby in the 2002 NBA Western Conference Finals comes to mind...although that was more of a "non-call".
- dmanmax99, on 06/25/2009, -0/+8It wasn't a call. It was a foul ball.
- Falldog, on 06/25/2009, -0/+7One of the best written articles I've seen on Digg.
- mcoulter876, on 06/25/2009, -2/+9OMG! It's sports! Provide a ***** video, amog!
- fitzoh, on 06/25/2009, -0/+7This lack of moving pictures upsets me.
- blackinthmiddle, on 06/25/2009, -0/+6I checked the list specifically for that one. I'm American and understand that I have a bias, but any objective person looking at that game would come to the same obvious conclusion. Basically, they were going to continue to find some bull ***** reason to keep playing that last play over again until the Russians found a way to win.
- MMusick, on 06/24/2009, -2/+7Not top ten material but Kent Hrbek pulling Ron Gant's leg off first base in the '91 World Series still haunts me.
- Egotrippin, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5Sam Bowie over Jordan.
- Dragotha, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5In 1999 the Stanley cup was awarded, not won. No goal.
http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/galle ... - Poochyfud, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5Oh how I hate Jeffrey Maier. The Orioles haven't done well since...
- Vulphaestion, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4RTFA.
The Hand of God Goal is there. - faraggi, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5mano de dios.
- Nekogao, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Antonio Ubaldo Rattin protested what he thought was an unwarranted red card by sitting on a red carpet reserved solely for the Queen of England.
??? Where did this come from? I remember him refusing to leave the pitch for ages then taking forever to walk around it and go down the tunnel to the dressing rooms. A special carpet reserved solely for the Queen at Wembley? I think the author's been had.
enraged Brits everywhere
??? Also not sure about the alternating of 'Brits' and 'English'. Maradona is a hero in Scotland for this.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internati ... - JKGuy16, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Or Alex Gonzales could have just fielded that easy double play ball that any little leaguer would have turned on the next play instead of doing his best windmill impression.
- cptcliche, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Because it was hardly one of the 10 most controversial calls in history.
- giveer, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3I'm still remembering the blown call in the '92 World Series where the ump somehow missed a clearly obvious tag on the foot and blew what would have been the first triple play in the World Series since 1906 or something crazy like this.
- porkins21, on 06/25/2009, -2/+4Nothing about Steelers vs Seahawks in Superbowl XL. That was a lame ass game because of the officials...
- blackinthmiddle, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2FTA:
"After receiving confirmation from New York third baseman Craig Nettles"
Especially when they can't even get the names correct. It was Graig Nettles. - Anubis2051, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2The Orioles can't play the Yankees in the World Series...It was the ALCS...
- gsenechal, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2I was getting ready to point out the foot in the crease "goal", but thankfully they covered it. (btw - NO GOAL).
- NaziHatinChimp, on 06/25/2009, -1/+3Oklahoma versus Oregon about 3 years back.
There is a reason the PAC 10 doesn't allow out of conference refs at there games. The Oklahoma player had the ball in his hand and they called it Oregon ball. Look it up. - FreddieD, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2***** Don Denkinger. Thanks for breaking a nine year old kid's heart that night, you four eyed bastard.
- ButterBuddha, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2yeah, that Brett Hull goal was total *****
- Spotacus, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Maybe if they had had the chance to take Manning and still took Leaf. Which is why Bowie over Jordan is worse.
- cptcliche, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Right there with you. That little ***** ruined it for us
- Niubai, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Ferrari / Schumacher / Barrichello 2002 in Austria. I don't know if it can be considered a "controversial call", but shameful for the sport, anyway.
- mrpunman, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Nine Most Controversial Calls in American Sports History
/fixed - Egotrippin, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2Yes, his is career avg of 10pts and 7reb per game takes the sting off skipping over one of the greatest players in NBA history.
- Ne007, on 06/25/2009, -0/+2How about when the Browns clearly had completed a play and then the refs go and reverse the play before that one?
Browns fans almost killed the refs with beer bottles:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQjaPVwmnAM&eur ... - Klak, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1i like the descriptions. this guy should be a (paid) sportswriter
- blackinthmiddle, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1This link has a good little look on the whole matter.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJYBV9BXQNY&fea ... - sprkoolguy, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Bartman?
- KibblesnBitts, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Of course Bowie was no Jordan, but he was still a decent player.
- robbiedo, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1I have to agree on this call because it not be overruled, and it directly led to Shanahan's gutsy 2 point call to win. Without the blown call, I doubt he never went for the win, and went for the tie.
Interestingly, it led to the season ending San Diego shellacking of Denver, and ending Shanahan's career in Denver. - KibblesnBitts, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1It wasn't controversial, it was a flat out ***** up call and denver should not have won - the referee even apologized.
-Broncos Fan - woofers07, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Didn't they actually call the "foul" on Bibby?
- cdnbmatt, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1The year.....1993.....two words......Kerry Fraser.
- infinitespecter, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1This was more like the nine most controversial calls in US sports history with one non US call thrown in for good measure.
- Stavrosian, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1With Schumi, I'd be tempted to include the way he was never punished for deliberately ramming Damon Hill off the road to win the world title. You'll never see more blatant cheating in motorsport than that, and the FIA completely bottled it.
- mrogi, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1The Immaculate Reception tops my list. The gattdam ball ricocheted off Frenchie Fuqua not Jack Tatum. The ball bounced directly from Fuqua to Franco Harris. The reception was illegal. Two offensive players could not touch a pass in succession. Raider Nation is still pissed.
- Stavrosian, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1To be fair to Gizza, the Hand of God seemed to be tacked-on towards the end in a desperate attempt to disguise the list as international.
- carter5434, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Worst call I ever saw was Larry Johnson's 4 point play in the Eastern Conference Finals in 99. Pacers/Knicks. Not even touched.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gex2CpfWkwg - yacks, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1How could they miss that one?
But the refs have been screwing the Browns as of recently... I mean one even threw a flag at a Brown injuring his eye and taking him out for quite a few weeks,, - MikeOSX, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1No Milt Pappas?
- TwoKill, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSIykYoM260
Heres your link, not really controversial just piss poor officiating. -
