- SBolivar, on 05/20/2009, -0/+26It's a gorgeous stadium from what the photos show.
- pookydirt, on 05/20/2009, -0/+18Cool concept... and I like the snakeskin look!
- ahamx, on 05/20/2009, -2/+15interesting read!
- AlKo, on 05/20/2009, -2/+13better looking than the Beijing Bird's Nest (or as my brother calls it,, "Giant bedpan") Stadium
- OswaldKenobi, on 05/20/2009, -0/+9Can we get some stadiums like that in the US? It looks nice, totally self sufficient, and it's giving back power on off days.
- doremon313, on 05/20/2009, -1/+9go Taiwan!
- inactive, on 05/20/2009, -2/+10Taiwan > China
- DecoyQ, on 05/20/2009, -0/+8Of course we can't. That's not how America works silly.
- gttim, on 05/20/2009, -1/+8Damn hippies! We don't need a green stadium! We need an ugly, poorly functioning, monstrosity! Where is your sense of tradition!
- FXNGLAS, on 05/20/2009, -0/+7FTA: "Overall, the stadium will generate 1.14 million KWh per year, preventing the release of 660 tons of carbon dioxide into atmosphere annually."
That is quite a substantial number of CO2. - IvanB, on 05/20/2009, -0/+7Impressive looking, to say the least.
- taylorhempel, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6Pipe down, Morpheus.
- DecoyQ, on 05/20/2009, -0/+5the sarcasm is strong with this one... dugg.
- FXNGLAS, on 05/20/2009, -0/+5I see your point and it's very valid, but you have to agree that if the stadium can do it's part to reduce emissions, they are moving in the right direction. Remember, they want to use the stadium to provide 80% of the power to the grid when it is not in use. That is also a big step in the right direction.
- Unreal411, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4AHHAHAH you think the oil/coal companies would want that?
ahahhaha - theaceoffire, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4Also, wouldn't those people be driving to the stadium regardless of how the stadium is powered?
So yeah, I say going with solar-powered is not that bad at all. - yehaww, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4regardless of the causes of global warming, what's wrong with taking steps to cut back on carbon emissions and get off dirty fuels?
- MWeather, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3"Whats the backup plan?"
It's probably grid-intertied, so the backup plan is the same as the normal plan: get power from the grid. The only thing that would change is they'd have to pay for the electricity. - kss42, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Now that's a bright idea
- iDiggr, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Come on, now. Don't be "that guy".
- b9gh47q, on 05/20/2009, -1/+4Yeah it really looks great, I'll definitely have to check it out on my trip to Taiwan next year.
- AmazingA, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2So do you think that there's ANY amount of pollution that would change the atmosphere and our weather? If so what's the cutoff of how much we can safely emit with zero consequences? My point is that there's *obviously* a limit to what our atmosphere can take. You don't need links or Al Gore to tell you that.
- shallowpro, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2taiwan's not a part of china u dingus
- EMGroup, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Go GREEN! the world needs it.
- yan89, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2What? How is that socialist?
- raleel, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Looking forward to seeing this. I'll be in Kaohsiung in a couple of weeks!
- DecoyQ, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2to build the building earthquake proof.
- skintigh, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1It's a theory. You can't prove a theory, only disprove it. But to become a theory a hypothesis has to withstand enormous amounts of rigorous testing and be accepted by the majority of the scientific community. They are smarter than you or me, so I defer to them.
"No amount of experimentation can ever prove me right; a single experiment can prove me wrong." - Albert Einstein - yan89, on 05/20/2009, -2/+3Taiwan = nice country
PRC = bad country - 029A, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1FTA, "8,844 solar panels that illuminate the track and field with 3,300 lux"
Pretty sure the interior lighting loads are negligible compared to that. - skintigh, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Better sorry than safe!
- askantik, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Nice
- nullcodes, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1it can still operate by moonlight then ... ha!
- CoD4, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Who knows what else is hiding behind the parts the photos don't show!
- TheIndigoSky, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Great idea! Curious as to the cost efficiency.
- krusher117, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1I will too. I can't wait to see it in person
- ligyron, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2No backup battery?
- inactive, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Your right about PRC, but when you use "Taiwan" and "China" in the same sentence, its usually pretty obvious.
Kinda like Apple and PC. - amasiancrasian, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2Taiwan is great, and so is Hong Kong. One place that a lot of people don't really know about is Macau. Just as Hong Kong is to London, Macau is to Portugal. Just think of Portuguese culture infused with traditional Cantonese superstitions and way of life: you get Macau.
Mainland China has still a long way to go before it becomes classy. Right now, Mainland China is passing into its industralisation era. Wait a few more years, and hopefully we will get a Mainland China that will remember its beautiful and ancient culture, such as traditional Chinese symbols instead of using the simplified ones it does (with exception to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau).
I know you mean China, as in the People's Republic of China, but China, theoretically, could mean Taiwan as in the "Republic of China." Just thought I should chime in since many people are unfamiliar with the history of the ROC era ;-). - popformula, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1http://www.jzcad.com/bbs/redirect.php?tid=80971&am ...
Some more pictures. - yan89, on 05/20/2009, -1/+2***** the PRC
- YojanV, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Brilliant idea, Taiwan FTW.
I wonder what the battery capacity is (if any) and whether it can stay self-sufficient if it hosts a concert... - PandaBearShenyu, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1I think it actually looks like a giant vampire fish...
- cashmonkey, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1All those arguments could be used against any stadium. This is people doing something positive to slow global warming.
- Elephant789, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Why is digg so down on China?
- Elephant789, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1Not sure what you mean!
- linagee, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1My house is 100% powered by the sun as well.
Dams: Water is heated by the sun, formed into clouds, rained back down at a higher elevation lake which can drain to a lower elevation lake through an impeller which turns generators, then electrical power.
Solar: Sun -> (electro-chemical stuff) -> electrical power.
Wind: Sun heats air and high/lower pressure and temperature differential causes wind which turn propellers which turn generators, then electrical power.
Nuclear: Ask a physicist.
Coal: Ask a geologist. - dygel, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1When they say the game is rained out, they're not kidding.
- OswaldKenobi, on 05/20/2009, -1/+1Rumors say it can play Crysis on FULL.
- Kahlim, on 05/21/2009, -0/+0Yeah! It's not as if a building would ever need more than one floor or a roof, silly Taiwanese.
