Part of a photo set about surfing in Puerto Escondido and Barra de la Cruz in Oaxaca, Mexico:

- Junior612, on 11/27/2008, -1/+9Thumbnail totally looks like the silhouette of a big white shark behind the surfer.
- d2002, on 11/27/2008, -0/+8So you weren't sponge worthy? :D
- tmacfan123, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6dang...this man makes me feel really insignificant...oh well
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6I wish I could surf.
- d2002, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4I know what you mean. But this can also be inspirational. The waves are huge and this one lone man is riding it out the best he can. Who knows, maybe in the next split second he wipes out. Maybe he'll never catch a wave as great as this one ever again. But for one shiny moment he was immortal.
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4Puerto Escondido is VERY treacherous. I sponged there on a day with waves not even near this size, about 7 ft swells, and 5 swimmers had to get rescued after being swept out by the rip tide.
- crowbar77, on 11/27/2008, -1/+5Welcome to 2008, time for a monitor that actually has a higher res than 800x600.
- semengilligan, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4Hardest part of surfing at least for me is the take off. Towing into a wave takes the most difficult part of the wave away. Also when you tow in you have much more speed and can make sections you could never make when you paddle. As far as a tow in this is beautiful but weak compared to some of the waves that towing in was invented for.
- chuckDontSurf, on 11/27/2008, -1/+5I could totally do that. I just don't want to.
- surferben182, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4also, when you tow in, you get on the wave before it gets this steep so you are able to position yourself accordingly. when you paddle in, you have to position yourself while dropping down the vertical face of the wave

Biggest Tube and worst thrashing I have ever had

- MoonDog9, on 11/27/2008, -3/+5Yeah, yeah, yeah...before you all start in with the man-worship understand that it's tow-in-surfing. It takes bigger balls to actually paddle into, catch and take the drop on a wave than it does to just ride it after a PWC has towed you into it.
- surferben182, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2its a tow-in surfboard. its designed to be short so that it is able to have maximum control. in general, you ride a taller board for larger waves and a smaller one for smaller waves so that you can generate the speed to paddle into the bigger ones.
when you tow into a wave, you dont need to paddle into the wave and thus you can ride a smaller board which makes it look more like a surfboard.
also tow surfers generally have a wider stance which makes the board look smaller - aComa, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2OVER 9000!!!!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/konaboy/247538594/in/ ... - inactive, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1what is it?
- noknockers, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1Don't forget he's strapped in.
Tow-in has it's place in, but paddling-in is generally a lot more critical. With tow-in you can get yourself into way more dangerous situations because you can basically tow in to anything, the fattest thickest slab you can find. I live at Kirra and we tow-in sometimes when it's a decent swell because the current gets too strong, trying to paddle against it to stay in one place is impossible. So we tow-in and get 50 waves each and never have to paddle. - sensibledriver, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Laird Hamilton approves.
- DrLeePhD, on 11/27/2008, -1/+2dugg for star-road special.
- revenz, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1not that hard to do, but extremely hard to master, after a few hours at most you'll be standing on the board
- IceQwin, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1outstanding! - Bill
- fumelo, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1Only problem is that you can't paddle into a wave over a certain size. The wave is moving too fast, no human can paddle fast enough. You get into the 30-35+ foot range and you need assistance catching waves - boat, ski, sail/kite, etc. Plus, it looks like there's a decent breeze, probably offshore, making it even harder to paddle fast enough to catch it. I remember days when the Santa Ana's were blowing so hard we could barely catch 4" waves. Just not possible to paddle into a wave of that size.
And you have to have straps on something that big. The slightest ripple at that speed would bounce you off the board. Strapped in, at least you still have the board on your feet so you can recover. - crackerjohn, on 11/28/2008, -1/+1and you are prob 12 years old...go back to school and grow up
- deadapostle, on 11/27/2008, -1/+1I don't understand. That is a wall of water with a surfer on it instead of a wall of rock with a goat on it. What happened to you, digg?
- burjzyntski, on 11/27/2008, -0/+0are you on mushrooms? i understand what you're saying but i really think that you're putting wayy too much thought into this.
- rocyahsoul, on 11/27/2008, -1/+1Awesome!
