- maximilen, on 03/20/2009, -25/+98Comparing your gutter-ball bowling attempt to the respected American Special Olympics organization in a mocking remark as President of the U.S. is bad form.
- insomniacal, on 03/20/2009, -5/+70I'd like to see a match between Obama and McConiughey. It'd be a good-sported way for Obama to apologize for the offhanded insult. Plus, what a great promotion and fundraiser for the Special Olympics. I've never watched bowling before, but I'd watch that match.
- AwakeningAZ, on 03/20/2009, -8/+70*****. He does not average 266. Top pro in the PBA currently averages 224.66.
Wait...unless he's impaired at math...oh, now I feel bad. - ryanhayn, on 03/20/2009, -30/+69Proof that bowling is a retarded sport.
- Chewie67, on 03/20/2009, -23/+56Lighten up, Francis!
As soon as I heard that comment last night, I knew there would be a firestorm.
He's comparing his bowling skills to someone with a physical disability. It's self deprecating humor. Anyone who feels that the comment was made with the intent of hurting the feelings of a disabled person is a moron.
We need to step out of this Political Correctness manure pile that our Country is mired in. It's become ridiculous. If your feelings get hurt by this innane crap, then:
a) How did you ever survive elementary school
and
b) Lighten the hell up. - mrogi, on 03/20/2009, -10/+39Let's suppose Obama accepts the challenge from Kolan McConiughey and wins the match. Can the President take pride in defeating a retard?
- ironhide, on 03/20/2009, -4/+29I'm very amused that all the folks slamming Obama for this on Digg are also the ones who complain about excessive "political correctness".
To be fair however, I would have slammed Bush for making an error like that also. - phosphite, on 03/20/2009, -1/+24Pat Healy: I work with retards.
Mary: Isn't that a little politically incorrect?
Pat Healy: Yeah, maybe, but hell, no one's gonna tell me who I can and can't work with. - joe7845, on 03/20/2009, -4/+26Absolutely. I've always supported Obama, but that was very disappointing. Using disability to either make fun or insult people is something that should not be done. I get that people do it all the time, and it would be difficult to change the way people view disability, but a higher standard is expected of the President of the US.
- bffoley, on 03/20/2009, -2/+24Yea, and I can see the headline on Fox News later that day:
"PRESIDENT HUSSEIN OBAMA BEATEN BY RETARD. CAN WE TRUST HIM TO STAND UP TO IRAN NOW?" - dannykeene, on 03/20/2009, -6/+27uhhh, it was all good when obama calls for imus to be fired for saying "nappy headed hoes" on a show no one listened to, but we should lighten up when the president of the United States makes fun of people with mental and physical handicaps on national tv?
- Avaseal, on 03/20/2009, -3/+23Average of 266..but like Ishmael, he plays a 15-frame game. Ten frames? That's for Quakers.
- meruru, on 03/20/2009, -1/+20I think he should take up the challenge, it would be good PR. Bowl a game, get your ass kicked, congratulate him, and say how remarkable the special olmpians are.
- TheRealness, on 03/20/2009, -4/+23Arguing on the internet is like bowling with Obama: even if you win, you're still retarded.
- UglieJosh, on 03/20/2009, -2/+19Maybe he is Amish?
(((EDIT: I, unknowingly, stole this reference from further down in the thread. I swear I hadn't read it yet but go ahead and bury me, I feel like a total Munson.))) - Dreeon, on 03/20/2009, -4/+21I don't vote for president based on whether or not I think s/he can beat a retard at bowling.
- WhoismP, on 03/20/2009, -4/+17Sorry to ruin your rant, the special olympics is not for the physically disabled, it is for those with special needs. Your comment would be correct if Obama said "para-lympics". Not everyone in the special olympics is physically disabled, and it is wrong to think in that manner.
Obama's comment was not politically incorrect. It was simply wrong, self deprecating or not. For a man who's inauguration was centered around the idea of equality, he sure demonstrated that even he has a way to go before he sees everyone as equal.
Also, mind you, he is now THE PRESIDENT. He is no longer Barry the candidate superstar. He is the most powerful man in the world. He cannot be degrading himself by going on Leno. Nor can he be making "jokes". He and Biden need to stop with the superstar mentality and get to work. Uphold the image of the President, not the celebrity! - RuffRidr, on 03/20/2009, -14/+25To be fair, he didn't have his teleprompter with him last night.
- Narbo, on 03/20/2009, -0/+11Sure, why not? The 'retard' as you put it is a professional bowler. The odds of Obama winning are pretty much zero.
In his shoes I would take the offer up, apologize in person and remember that when the camera is on he needs choose his words more carefully. - senlei23, on 03/20/2009, -2/+12when the ***** did we get ice cream?!
- Junkyardjim, on 03/20/2009, -0/+10he wasnt even talking about the government, he was talking about his own personal bowling issues, him an leno were talking about if the bowling alley got renovated into a basketball court at the whitehouse.
i knew there was gonna be something like this on digg today, right when i heard him utter those words. - akchrs, on 03/20/2009, -1/+11I certainly didn't vote for Obama but as soon as I heard he said that I thought he should have known better, but I'm sure right when he said it a light went off and he knew it wasn't good. But because I'm a Republican I'm going to feign outrage elsewhere in the comments.
- stevensj2, on 03/20/2009, -3/+12Yeah, he was making fun of himself..by _comparing_ his *poor* performance to the special olympians.
The "joke" would not have even worked if he used a positive term, or the name of a bowler who is actually good.
Guess what it's called when you "make fun" of yourself by comparing yourself to another in a negative fashion?
An Insult. Off-handed or unintentionally, it was still an insult. - Grandpohbah, on 03/20/2009, -0/+9I've volunteered with Special Olympics for over 15 years and have learned just because you are Special Olympics athlete doesn't mean you are not athletic. Quite a few of our track athletes also run on their High School Track teams and even hold records. I've helped with the Special Olympics bowling teams too (i usually help with track though). There are more kick ass bowlers like Mr. McConiughey than you'd think. Almost all of them are in other normal bowling leagues.
Special Olympics is about competing and training with people who have to deal with the same issues. Special Olympics is more about community and dignity than it is about athletics, but that doesn't mean it's void of athletic talent. - inactive, on 03/20/2009, -2/+11At least Bush knows how hard it is for me to put food on my family.
- petemcfraser, on 03/20/2009, -6/+15He seemed OK with beating McCain.
ZING! - SaladCactusKing, on 03/20/2009, -8/+16Not one comment in this thread will end up being good.
- BenTheTank, on 03/20/2009, -1/+9Chewie67,
I would agree that political correctness in the U.S. has gone too far, BUT Obama's statement was legitimately offensive.
Making fun of the mentally handicapped and patronizing their abilities on a National level is NOT acceptable. Especially from the President of the United States.
btw, I would love to have seen your reaction if W. Bush had said this. - manjas8, on 03/20/2009, -2/+10I'm a conservative, let me get that out of the way right now.
I laughed when he said it, not because of the crap he would get because it was 'insensitive', but it was actually funny. Granted he should have known better than to say it on Leno, but whatever.
Political Correctness is ruining this country. - hooah212002, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7get what?
explain.... - dannykeene, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7MaxxusFlamus
So, in essence, obama said... I bowl so poorly, you would think i am a retarded person.
Obama was making fun of himself AND retarded people. Who would ever use the special olympics this context if it didn't have such obvious second class connotations of the people involved in the special olympics? - inigomntoya, on 03/20/2009, -1/+8No. He gets it.
- ehaugan, on 03/20/2009, -0/+6You sir, are a moron. Obama compared his bowling to something out of the Special Olympics last night on Jay Leno
- Remelox, on 03/20/2009, -0/+6If your family didn't move so much it would be easier to put food on them.
- MaxxusFlamus, on 03/20/2009, -2/+8Obama should've seen this coming-
but.
Dannykeene-
Imus's insult was directed to offend someone other than him- he was aiming at Rutgers.
Obama's insult was meant to be self depreciating, but in order for it to be self depreciating, you have to view the special olympics in a bad light.
That said- Obama should watch himself- he has a level of dry wit that is sharp, but will likely get him in trouble from folks like u. - seks03, on 03/20/2009, -3/+9*****, now were going to hear about this ***** stupid non-news story for about 4 months... there's going to be a bunch of stories and focus on these people.... geez! I love this country, lets all forget the important stuff
- Pstall, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5@useraccess
"He was making fun of himself"
How was he making fun of himself? Oh yeah that's right, by comparing his TERRIBLE bowling with someone who was born with a disability.
"However, let's not take the reprimand too far."
Any other public figure would of been fired for this kind of comment. If you do not believe this go look at Don Imus, or Rush Limbaugh when he made comments about a certain NFL quarterback. - CrankMyBlueSax, on 03/20/2009, -5/+10Prez got PWNED, and deservedly so. Move along, nothing more to see here.
- danwallace, on 03/20/2009, -2/+7Kinda funny how everyone's all over the guy for making one stupid comment, yet Bush made them so regularly that, over time, they just stopped being news.
- AgentOgre, on 03/20/2009, -2/+7if you can bowl a 300 game should you be bowling in the special olympics?
- carabou, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5...nope i didnt learn to spell, YOU FAIL!...
- ousthouse, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5Yeah, but at least Kolan (probably) didn't think giving money to failed banks and insurance companies was a good idea.
- akchrs, on 03/20/2009, -1/+5I can't believe he said that!! Not only am I completely disgusted I am saddened at his insensitivity towards the many Americans with disabilities.
- Charlotte_Web, on 03/20/2009, -2/+6I'd like to see how Kolan would handle the economy. He certainly couldn't do a worse job, that's for sure.
- Junkyardjim, on 03/20/2009, -2/+6it was a bad mistake, O knew it right away, you can almost see him cringe, he should however take this guy up and play him a round in the white house. that would be rad
- downneck, on 03/20/2009, -1/+5this is the only worthwhile comment in this whole thread.
- Rivetgeek, on 03/20/2009, -3/+7They get to play with the gutter bumpers.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -6/+10Probably at least 80% of people in the US has either made an offhanded joke about being in the special Olympics at some time, or would not be overtly offended upon hearing a peer make such a remark.
Obama's problem is he's too relaxed in public, and tends to speak like he's in a casual conversation with friends. This is great to some extent, but one does need to learn to be a bit formal in all public exchanges as president, or the media goes wild with this bullcrap phony and hypocritical indignation. - dannykeene, on 03/20/2009, -3/+7He was saying mentally and physically handicapped people suck, and that he sucks at bowling.
So, in essence, obama said... I bowl so poorly, you would think i am a retarded person
