- thewade, on 05/05/2009, -1/+29How is snooker like sex? If pink is blocked by red, then go for brown.
- slingr, on 05/06/2009, -0/+9Glad to see Snooker on the front page :)
While it's here.. take a look at the fastest Maximum Break by Ronnie O :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McThDshEgU0
His shot at 1:25 is absolutely amazing :) - smacksaw, on 05/05/2009, -1/+10I wish those guys would stop playing pool and bring me my ***** gin and tonic!
- smacksaw, on 05/06/2009, -0/+8I thought you were going to say it was like throwing a hot dog down a hallway, but I guess I've just got my analogies in the gutter.
- borez, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5Snooker was a lot bigger here in the UK in the 70's 80's and 90's, it's died down a bit now. Still love to watch a good game though. It'll be interesting to see if it takes off across the pond.
- geesamba, on 05/06/2009, -1/+6So you're saying it's really quite simple?
- cresswga, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4You pot a Red then any colour until there are no reds left. After a colour is potted then it is placed back on its spot.
When there are no more reds then you pot the colours in order:
Yellow, Green, Brown, Blue, Pink, Black
Red = 1 point, Yellow = 2, etc up to Black = 7
Maximum score in a single game is 147 which is very hard. - NobleWolf, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4Pot the reds then, screw back
For the yellow green brown blue pink and black - sneakysam, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4the irony is lost in you, the reason he nicknamed "Interesting" was because he won so many tournaments during the 80s, people thought he WAS boring to watch.
- mickstephenson, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4Well really you should go for blue next, but innuendo wise that's probably hard to make work.
- yocouchdigga, on 05/05/2009, -0/+3you're thinking of a "Stranger", I'm giving myself one as I type this... typing with one hand is hard but practice makes perfect!
- NealeT, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3i can't see snooker without thinking of Mitchell and Webb. if you haven't seen That Mitchell and Webb Look you need to go check it out
- IHaveCrayons, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3My personal favorite is carom billiards. Awesome game where you have to really have great control over the ball (spin, placement etc).

And there are no holes involved! - cawpin, on 05/06/2009, -1/+4Snooker is a great game. It's also a great way to train for playing pool. If you can make a pool ball in a snooker pocket (Yes, they will fit), playing on a standard pool table is like putting a football through a tire from 3 feet.
- billricardi, on 05/05/2009, -0/+2The championship was great. The final was a total blowout, but that's OK. A lot of young talent really strutted their stuff.
I also liked the 6 ball demo event. I think it could have real appeal for those of us more used to faster paced cue games like 9 ball. It could have a much broader international appeal. - Feener, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2I enjoy watching snooker when it's on, but I have absolutely no idea how the points system works or which order the balls should be potted in.
- wejmahtin, on 05/06/2009, -1/+3I play it almost every time I go to Brasil. Rail shots are almost impossible.. pockets are super small. If you get good at it, when you come back to the states and play billiards, you've got a seriously unfair advantage. For about a week. I tend to fall back to my previously mediocre level of play after that.
- cawpin, on 05/06/2009, -2/+4Um, no? You just have to click the link like everybody else.
- hakluytbean, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2Don't know of any American players but there were some decent Canadians back in the day, when men were men and drank extraordinary amounts of beer, for example the great Bill Werbeniuk: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/tools_and_service ...
- elf25, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2And about snooker, it's not that the pockets are that much smaller, it's that the corners are rounded. If you are off a tiny bit, your ball hits the round rail, bounces across the pocket and out. On a pool table with square corners, you can use the rail to bounce a ball in the pocket.
- smacksaw, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2Actually, they used to show it (and pool) on ESPN and ESPN2 all the time. I certainly watched it. That is some tense *****.
- scarwars, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2Only reason why I watch snooker is for the extremely hot referee Michaela Tabb.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHi9H6R5Ta0 - Klaky, on 05/06/2009, -1/+3@Residents,
You get the woman to help type and use both hands on your penis? Is it easy to tell her what you want her to type as you are busy with yourself? - Lefts, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1I wish I could play snooker, it looks incredibly hard, shooting wise.
- eejbm, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1you've never met a bloke with red hair named "Blue" have you? Or a very tall person nicknamed "Tiny"?
- Nick519, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1well, andy capp will be thrilled.
- cuesporttv, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1I think anything that can be played competitively can be classed as a sport, so your suggestions are not unreal
- kimme, on 05/05/2009, -1/+2It's showing every major tournament on Eurosport and every "century" that's achieved on an snooker table.
- dpop416, on 05/06/2009, -1/+2FTA: "Even the quiet Steve Davis, who won six world titles in the 1980s, earned the nickname Interesting."
"Interesting" is the most boring nickname I've ever heard. At least call him Stevie McQuiet or something. There, that took a whole two seconds to think of. - deadboot, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1cush to cush
- ThatsNotPudding, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Occasionally played this when i worked on a security ward at a State Hospital (no kidding).
- Kallius, on 05/06/2009, -1/+2Apparently the definition of "sport" is very loose these days. Snooker, darts, and even Texas Holdem are shown on certain Sports Networks, which makes me think a lot of people actually believe these games are "sports." If Holdem can be a sport, why not chess? Backgammon? Dungeons and Dragons?
- gravylookout, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1It took me a bit to figure it out but that was incredible! You rarely see 9 ball players move that fast.
- slingr, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1When Ralf Souquet gets in his groove he can get kinda quick... Alex Paguylan too..
but yeah.. 5:00~ for potting 40 balls in order is nuts (even with randomly being able to choose which of the 15 reds you can pot) - eejbm, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1not snooker, but worth mentioning while a cue sport is on the front page
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Lindrum <- legened
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Charlton <- I have a cue signed by this gentleman... thanks Eddie! - eejbm, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1this man speaks the truth!!
- cuesporttv, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1What is needed to update snooker? I don't think changing the game to play with less balls is the answer, it kind of dumbs down those the game is trying to appeal to. I agree it needs updating and I would say the clothing would be a start, plus making tournaments outside of the UK (all are in the Uk except 3 this year) into ranking events. If Belgium, Germany, USA, South Africa, Australia etc... could have fully fledged ranking events then the game would truly be global and grow exponentially. Just look at China.
Eurosport coverage has contributed massively to the growth of the sport in Western and Eastern Europe, The World Series of Snooker has certainly helped with this as well by taking the game to new countries like Russia. - geesamba, on 05/07/2009, -0/+1@eejbm <-- fails to pick up on a light-hearted joke on makes an incorrect and sweeping generalization to prove his/her ignorance.
- fotoman, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1Baseball, football, and basketball are also games..... yet we call those sports.
Being a sports photographer, we have lots of discussion as to what a sport really is. What about cheerleading? Highly competitive, high risk of injury, and very athletic, not a game... sport?
What about anything that requires a judge to determine the winner? Is that a sport? It might be athletic, but at least with darts or snooker you have an opponent. - eejbm, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1"screw back" eh? don't get technical on us now!!
- bavatara, on 05/07/2009, -0/+1its really big in India.

- olliholliday, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1they should bring this show back instead:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv7qY1TVnAY - AquaOSX, on 05/06/2009, -0/+1I'm definitely being forced to login / register on this machine. It looks like the Times is doing A/B testing with login screens and speed bumps. Hence why I'm being f'd with, but you're not.
We do this stuff all the time where I work. - inactive, on 05/06/2009, -0/+0yeah...sure it is! (well, not in the US, which is the country of this newspaper.)
2009 is the year of Snooker! - cawpin, on 05/06/2009, -2/+2Billiards doesn't have pockets.
- Residents, on 05/05/2009, -1/+1I was never reasonably fast typing one handed, so I get the woman to help and use both hands all the time.
- yocouchdigga, on 05/05/2009, -1/+1from downtown!
- eejbm, on 05/06/2009, -2/+2@geesamba - yes, for anyone thats not a stupid american...
