- SDM187, on 06/14/2009, -4/+22YOU GOT KNOCKED THE ***** OUT!
- kilodelta, on 06/14/2009, -0/+14TIM-BERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
- sRees00, on 06/14/2009, -0/+12I dont get why this is a huge setback... Sylvia hasnt been a good fighter since the Arlovski days. His days at the top are over.. Who cares, they're both washed up. I'd pay to see Mercer even attempt that on Fedor.
- bigp3rm, on 06/14/2009, -0/+12No one gives a ***** about your spam. No one is clicking your link. ***** off.
- m3arvk, on 06/14/2009, -0/+11Ya, I've always thought Sylvia was overrated. First punch of the first round and he goes down to an old boxer.
- scoot2006, on 06/14/2009, -1/+12That's 'cause Sylvia is a horrible fighter.
- suburbanWMD, on 06/14/2009, -0/+9Bye bye Tim.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -2/+11Anyone who wins the gold medal and HW boxing championship knows how to punch. Why the hell didn't he shoot ASAP? Tim, you are a retard.
- pitchblackjava, on 06/14/2009, -1/+10Because people are interested.
- whorunbartertwn, on 06/14/2009, -0/+7Has Tim Sylvia ever shot on anyone? He's show he can fight off his back a little but he's mainly a center-of-the-ring stalker puncher.
- inactive, on 06/14/2009, -0/+7Hahah, that's true, Tim isn't exactly a takedown artist. But seriously, any idiot could tell you that his boxing is nowhere near as good as Mercer's so what the hell? Even a crappy single leg or pull down is better than Tim's usual plodding to the center and jabbing routine in an instance like this. I mean, it's Ray Mercer, the guy who got subbed by Kimbo, the plan should have been obvious.
- dirtyhipster, on 06/14/2009, -0/+6This wasn't in the UFC, Tim has been getting boned since he left, he's washed up, this was some small no name org
- ElGubrush, on 06/14/2009, -2/+8Well if it only took 10 seconds at least it was "mercerfully brief"
- suburbanWMD, on 06/14/2009, -1/+6He almost triangled Jeff Monson, he has a ground game. For ***** sake, noted BJJ practitioner KIMBO ***** SLICE tapped Ray Mercer. It's not that hard.
- Jimmerz, on 06/14/2009, -0/+5Tim is in no way among the best of the UFC. He was the 'champ' of a weak division. A boxer, even the best boxer, will lose to an MMA guy using MMA rules 9 out of 10 times. Conversely an MMA fighter, even one who is one of the best strikers, will lose a boxing match against a good boxer 9 out of 10 times.
- BrokenVisage, on 06/14/2009, -1/+6Tim Sylvia could still kick my ass in 5.
- knodi, on 06/14/2009, -2/+7Tim Sylvia is a moron. I'm glad he got KTFO!
- TheRealness, on 06/14/2009, -1/+5Dude... what are YOU talking about. Ray Mercer WAS ranked in the top 10 active heavyweights SEVERAL times throughout his career... and he DID fight Lennox Lewis right around his prime, and Evander Holyfield a bit past his prime.
http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Mag ...
Ray Mercer was in the top 10 in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, and 1996. - m3arvk, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4Not sure if you're suggesting that most or all of the MMA fighters would lose this way. I can assure you that if you put an Emelianenko or a GSP in the ring with Mercer the fight'd be over just as quick but the result would be a submission in ten seconds.
- ZzFDKzZ, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4Tim is not a grappler.
- macmcraeart, on 06/14/2009, -2/+6Kerr-kickboxing, you ever heard of kickboxing? Sport of the future? Don the Dragon Wilson? Benny "the Jet" Uriquez? Mercy Mess on the Champions of Sport? I can see by your face, no. My point is, you can relax because your daughter will be safe with me for the next 7 to 8 hours, sir."
- ZzFDKzZ, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4This fight didn't take place in the UFC.
- tyler90wm, on 06/14/2009, -2/+6This is making Fedor look bad, what with Arlovski getting beat so easily and now this.
- Jimmerz, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4A boxer, any boxer but especially a heavyweight, always has a puncher's chance. Add to that the gloves that are only there to protect the hands? Don't blink.
I know this wasn't a UFC fight, but the idea that Sylvia was the HW champ in UFC and lost to an ancient Couture says a lot about the weakness of that division, just as it's been a weak weight class in boxing for years. Dana needs to get Fedor and some other guys in there to lend it some credibility. - thekajunpimp, on 06/14/2009, -0/+4Tim Sylvia is no longer a draw.
Mr Mayonnaise belly should focus on training white belts in mcdojos - judahhertz, on 06/14/2009, -1/+4I would have been upset had I actually bought tickets.
- damack, on 06/14/2009, -4/+7Dude this is Ray Mercer he held the WBO title 15 years ago(if you know anything about boxing the WBO title is worthless to all but unification fighters).
Ray Mercer has never been a ranked fighter and he never fought anybody of the likes of Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield or Lennox Lewis during his "best" years.
Nobody especially not Sylvia was expecting a guy whoose had a hard time cracking the top 50 active heavyweight boxers list in his career would defeat an MMA fighter who is currenly ranked in the MMA top ten.
It really goes to show that people say boxers the likes of Mike Tyson wouldn't last 5 seconds in the cage but if Ray Mercer of all people can pwn a top ten ranked HW a good boxer would tear through that division.
Well to be honest its already happened with Chuck but Chucks punching has nothing on Tysons ability.
Some mash up fights would have been a lot of fun. - mrogi, on 06/14/2009, -1/+4Merciless Ray Mercer. That was the best knockout since Merciless destroyed Tommy Morrison in the 5th round back in 1991.
- whorunbartertwn, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3It was a fluke... by your logic of using the single win as proof of what a boxer can do one can easily use the Slice fight as proof opposite. Sylvia didn't take the fight seriously, was out of shape, had a stupid plan, and he got caught on the chin.
Chuck was a Division I wrestler, and he's far from a classic boxer look at his hands out no-footwork stance he's just looking to catch someone with a counter punch.
Throw top MMA guys in the boxing ring they don't stand a chance, and vice versa. - KnightMareInc, on 06/14/2009, -5/+8heres a gif of the action
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/3134/mercer.gif - EvilDeadAsh, on 06/14/2009, -1/+4get a grip, douchebag. maybe we should watch an exciting game of chess or old people playing bingo? when you have a name that doesn't suggest you are a 40 year old, cartoon watching man-baby then maybe you'll be taken seriously. until then... show me the gorillas.
- wondertwins, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3love how he just freezes and slowly goes down in that same position
- Jimmerz, on 06/14/2009, -0/+3Then you simply don't like MMA. Which is fine, stick to watching boxing and K1, those are great sports as well. No need to be ignorant about it though.
- JigoroKano, on 06/14/2009, -1/+4No man, just no, you're bleeding ignorance.
A "UFC style fight" doesn't mean anything. It's nonsensical like a "WBA style fight" or an "IBF style fight". The UFC is the biggest MMA promotion in the world. This wasn't even a second rate promotion. It was an unsanctioned fight in Alabama.
If Tyson fought anyone in MMA, he'd probably lose... unless he fought a striker who doesn't properly keep distance with leg kicks and push kicks. Tyson could probably beat a Tim Sylvia, Brett Rodgers, Paul Buentello, and a handful of other top heavy weights. The vast majority would beat Tyson easily, though he would always have a puncher's chance - the fight does begin standing.
Fighters without a wrestling background can't just will a fight to stand up. If it was that easy they could just waltz into the Olympics and take all the greco and freestyle gold medals. Because all they have to do is keep standing.
And finally, boxing isn't in the worst shape in its history. The heavy weight division might be, but the remainder is making record profits. - SarcoBlaster, on 06/14/2009, -3/+5KTFO.
- shniper, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2Maybe a fighter just isn't the same after taking a beating from Fedor...
- Trunkhouse, on 06/14/2009, -1/+3Say Anything FTW
- praisethelard, on 06/14/2009, -1/+3It was called by his friend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlLmvsmjuow
- VinnieDaMac, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2It just goes to show that although a lot of skill is involved, but luck also plays a big part. One lucky right and you could win.
- painting, on 06/14/2009, -1/+3yet he got a beat down to submission by Kimbo

- csimpkins, on 06/15/2009, -0/+2I enjoy a good MMA fight every now and then. But these 10 second knockouts just aren't entertaining.
- buakaw, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaXTuyHu5oI

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k142/brr9q/MISC/ ... - sklassen, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2Haha I was waiting for someone to do this.
- PatchesOhulihan, on 06/15/2009, -0/+2Tim Sylvia was the big fish of the UFC heavyweight division when it was still a small pond. Some people are trying to suggest that the HW division is still thin but if you threw Sylvia in the octagon now with the likes of Shane Carwin, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, etc., it would easily prove that this isn't the same division any more.
- diggerpleez, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2nope, just you.
- ZzFDKzZ, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2LMAO Kimbo Slice choke out Mercer in less than a min.
- JigoroKano, on 06/14/2009, -0/+2According to Tim, he hadn't trained ground work in months. This was supposed to be a boxing match, but apparently there was some legal trouble with that and it became an MMA fight at the last minute.
Mercer got royally ***** over by this change. He does not have any extensive grappling background at all. Even for the Kimbo fight he figured they'd just be two boxers trading with small gloves on... and Kimbo ended up choking him.
I'm very happy that Mercer was able to pull out the win, just because of the bad situation he was placed in. -
