In swedish (maybe other languages too) you say "lycka i olyckan" which roughly translates to having luck within the bad luck.
Another thing people don't know is that at the time the poles didn't have any top to cover the pole. So basically the cylinder was open and empty inside making the border easily penetrate the skin. As a professional athlete, he'll be strong, fit, healthy, etc etc. He has brilliant genes. Being a pole-vaulter doesn't give him any sort of evolutionary disadvantage; quite the opposite.
