Photographer Gets Speared by Javelin at School Track Meet
msn.foxsports.com — A newspaper photographer from Utah got a little too close to the action at the State High School Track Championships — and was speared through the leg by a javelin. The thumbnail to this story is the picture he shot of himself, while others tended to him.

- DanielJoel, on 05/20/2008, -18/+1Soon they'll be standing in the gun ranges at the local police training academy trying to grab a few good shots (literally).
- michaelb323, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3Yea, and javelin throws will be banned in the US because they could be used as a weapon. Why do people have to stand down range anyway?
- beargrylls, on 05/20/2008, -1/+5No they won't.
- AtomicTheory, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1you suck
- over900000, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1That's what I really dislike about Olympics. All those field judges are just standing there while things like discus, javelins, shot puts, hammers are flying towards them. Recipe for a disaster.
- kickoff22, on 05/20/2008, -9/+17Ouch. You would think the photographer would be more careful with sharp javelins flying around the sky...
- shutaro, on 05/20/2008, -0/+37Yeah... Perhaps he didn't see the point.
- ikcilabd, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1aparently his lens was pointed in the other direction
- erichw1504, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2maybe that was the point
- theRIAA, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2the javs in my district all have metal mushroom heads with protective rubber tips...
- Aereo, on 05/20/2008, -3/+247I give this guy major man points for taking his own injury photo with a ***** javelin in his leg. Badass.
- davidsmero, on 05/20/2008, -0/+42Would have got more points if he pulled it through and threw it back at the kid.
- forceuser, on 05/20/2008, -2/+3Wouldn't that damage him more by pulling it out?
- 4rp4n3t, on 05/20/2008, -1/+11No, you think?!
- SSUK, on 05/20/2008, -1/+6WOOOOOooooo...oo..o....... ooooOOOOSH.
- forceuser, on 05/20/2008, -2/+3Wouldn't that damage him more by pulling it out?
- aelias, on 05/20/2008, -1/+27Sign of a good photographer. Always get the shot.
- fultron89, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1You could say the same thing about marines.
- R4mbini, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2THAT is dedication to the job :P
- HoldenDapen0r, on 05/20/2008, -0/+12He is an ex-Marine....
- jezsik, on 05/20/2008, -0/+14Badass? C'mon, the guy's a marine fer pete's sake. It's just a minor inconvenience for him.
- petebot, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6He is Vigo! You are like the buzzing of flies to him!
- VVCephei, on 05/20/2008, -1/+0Not really.. all you need is morphine.
- aeiou, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3bahh.... I just broke my back, arm and leg a couple weeks ago... they gave me morphine at the hospital- did nothing. Oxycodone is where its at.
- davidsmero, on 05/20/2008, -0/+42Would have got more points if he pulled it through and threw it back at the kid.
- terrizance, on 05/20/2008, -1/+162"One of the first things that came to my mind was, 'Good thing we brought a second javelin,"
...and that is a great example of human compassion.- gurellia53, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1probably the same guy that sprayed pee on the vegetables
- mnemy, on 05/20/2008, -7/+4Ehh. If the guy was dumb enough to get in the way of a javelin... kinda hard to feel sorry for him
- feoren, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7"Ohhh nooo" you said. "We don't need two Javelins" you said. "What could possibly go wrong if we only bring one" you said. Well I guess you weren't counting on one getting stuck in a photographer, were you, huh? That's why I'm the coach, bitch!
- iSamurai, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1If I could infinitely digg you up I would

- castevens, on 05/20/2008, -7/+47This is far from the first time something like this has happened. People need to stand further away. This is why God created Telephoto lenses
- santaliqueur, on 05/20/2008, -1/+17I thought it was for peeping toms? Either way, good times.
- kkitsune, on 05/20/2008, -6/+26http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephoto_lens#Histor ...
God didn't create it. Give credit where credit is due. - Duositex, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1So you have other examples of photographers who took pictures of javelins piercing their shins? I bet bears to beets that you don't.
- coheedcollapse, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1I took a picture of my foot when I stepped on a fishhook and put it straight through it somehow. Does that count? The skin is all crinkly because the barbs caught on the inside and squished it all together.
- EserVerx, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Actually Thomas Rudolphus Dallmeyer is credited with the invention of the telephoto lense. Although it was first conceptualized by Johannes Kepler.
Although, as is very common with a lot of things, others were also recognized as having invented the telephoto lens in other parts of the world around the same time period.
I study photography. =P - coheedcollapse, on 05/20/2008, -1/+7A lot of photographers prefer to get closer to the action rather than hanging back and using a telephoto.
That, and freelance photographers have trouble getting them because a quality telephoto costs more than a small car. We have to buy all of our own equipment.
- Sikarian, on 05/20/2008, -13/+2I would have dug you up had you left off literally.
- chanop, on 05/20/2008, -0/+9That little blue "reply" under the red and green thumbs isn't there for decoration
- Sikarian, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Gah, ***** me and my failure at the new comment system. Bury me to oblivion, thanks.

DO I TAKE IT OUT OR DO I LEAVE IT IN?!- macaddct1984, on 05/20/2008, -0/+15Ahh! Take it out, take it out!
[Blood spurts out]
Ahh! Put it back, put it back!
But seriously, never remove objects from puncture wounds, let them do it at the hospital.
- macaddct1984, on 05/20/2008, -0/+15Ahh! Take it out, take it out!
- Treshnell, on 05/20/2008, -8/+2I thought that javelin was illegal on the high school level. They never had it at our school or any Meets I went to.
- murraj2, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1It's based on the state. Though I think most do allow the javelin, but not the hammer throw.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 05/20/2008, -0/+12You went to Wimp High
- rabidbob, on 05/20/2008, -2/+40Pics or .... ah ... yes ... I see.

- erichw1504, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1He'll be feeling that in the morning
- macweirdo42, on 05/20/2008, -2/+4Wow, and he wasn't even photographing the javelin competition. You know, I have a general rule of thumb for situations like this - wandering around near high school students throwing sharp, pointy objects is just asking for trouble.
- enivid, on 05/20/2008, -1/+8In this episode of Teen Girl Squad the ugly one gets JAVELINED!!!!
- blackjack75, on 05/20/2008, -3/+4Javelins don't kill people. Precisely-aimed javelins do.
- fultron89, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1No, video games kill people.
- blackjack75, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1I have been saying for decades that Summer Games II is a creation of the Devil. But nobody would listen..

- Dumbledorito, on 05/20/2008, -1/+18M.E. Elizabeth Rodgers: I got another body coming in. Guy took a javelin to the chest.
Det. Lennie Briscoe: Why are you still in this line of work?
M.E. Elizabeth Rodgers: Free javelins.
- Law & Order - bdbr, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Some states don't allow javelin as a track sport for this very reason.
- purelithium, on 05/20/2008, -2/+2Damn! The dude survived a tour in the 'gan to be ***** up by a javelin back home.
If any of you military fellows are out there, did any of you at first think "Damn! He got hit by a javelin anti-armour weapon?"- SlapTard, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Actually, no. "Private Pyle, what in the ***** are you doing wandering around my impact area!!!"
- ikcilabd, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3...meanwhile, the shotput photographer got stoned, the hammer throw photographer got nailed and the discus photographer got...uh... Tron'd?

Wow... that was nice of him. - NeoCortex, on 05/20/2008, -0/+20He's an ex-marine. I'm surprised he didn't just take it out himself and walk it off.
- odyss3y, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4He only did 6 months in Afghanistan. Clearly he wasn't up to the challenge.
- yowhat2002, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1That a love, honour, obey reference? :S
If so

- Duositex, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1Painful accident or trend-setting body jewelry? You decide.
- musicforus, on 05/20/2008, -6/+1Can we stop throwing sharp, pointed sticks through the air and calling it a sport now?
- Duositex, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4In his defense he was trying to invent a new sport by combining soccer and the javelin... Because he is a pioneer in the sport he has saved countless lives by demonstrating a pressing need for protective gear.
- RazorUK45, on 05/20/2008, -4/+2Erm.....boom legshot?
- erichw1504, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1javelin

- elamr, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4as bad as this is. It could have been much, much, much, much much much worse.
- Duositex, on 05/20/2008, -0/+12Yeah, like if it was a radioactive explosive javelin tossed into a bus full of handicapped orphans with cancer causing it to careen out of control and plow into a rehabilitation clinic for paralyzed burn victims during rush hour in New Delhi.
- Miche1987, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4You are a sick, sick man with sick, sick thoughts.....
