- artwork, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27I was surprised. We don't know what the cause of his death is. Stress may or may not have been a factor.
Pakistan has been one of the best teams in the world. They were stunning in 1992 and several years after. Every team goes through bad patches, and this is Pakistan's bad patch.
I think cricket fans take the game way too seriously. Corporate sponsors exploit the madness and there is a lot of money involved. This puts too much pressure on the team.
How about we just enjoy the sport? Winning and losing is all part of the game, as they say. Nobody should have to die. - NasKa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Thank you Woolmer. We will miss you.
- Fantom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Pakistan lost to Ireland. It was unbelievable! The Irish don't even play cricket. Well, not really. Whereas Pakistan are amongst the game's elite. There was a ringer or 2 but mostly it was just clever play by the Irish. In a 2 horse race anything is possible.
It would have made headlines anyway but the fact it was St Patrick's Day gave it more media coverage than otherwise. It was a fairytale victory.
That media coverage included mobs of people in Pakistan literally chanting for Woolmer's death.
So I'm not surprised either. Just pissed off at people who suck.
RIP Bob Woolmer. - affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Damn Irish Luck
- Tr33fiddy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Pakistan are a team full of money-orientated egos (according to Imran Khan).
Their captain is a prime example of how a poor example can make a team perform less than the sum of its parts.
Two of their bowlers tested positive for performance enhancing steroids and were banned. The PCB then appealed and the bans got overturned (when they should have been hung out to dry as examples). They were then dropped from the Pakistan team - officially because of injury - but many believe it was because they would have failed a drugs test had one been administered at the World Cup (which it would have).
Last year, Pakistan refused to come back onto the field during the Oval Test because of an umpiring decision they didn't like and consequently became the first team in the history of Test cricket to forfeit a test.
I don't cry for Pakistan because they have a rich history of gamesmanship and rule-bending and frankly act like the have never heard of the 'spirit of cricket'.
Bob Woolmer, arguably the greatest coaching innovator cricket has ever known, dealt with all of this with dignity and loyalty. Finally though, the controversies and results combined with a previously diagnosed heart condition and it seems that this is what brought his fine innings to a close.
Rest in peace, Bob. May those in heaven give you as much time as you gave to all of us down here. - adamkhel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Wait a minute, nowhere does it say that any foul play was involved or that anyone murdered him. If anything, it seems that he overdosed on some sort of drugs.
Plus, this didn't even happen in Pakistan, but in Kingston, Jamaica. Why don't we wait to see what the cause of death is before blaming it on the 'seedy underworld'.
Oh, and as for Pakistan being a "proud countr[y] that don't tolerate failure", are you frickin kidding me?! Have you BEEN to Pakistan?! - AeroZeppelin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Cricket is serious business.
- sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7??? i'm not Muslim, but was that suppose to be funny?
- dugdal, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8They love an effigy in Pakistan dont they? Greg Chappell's been burnt recently, Inzi was scorched after the Ireland loss. I recall that even Imran was set alight a few years back. Its quite humorous. Woolmer's death however, is not.
It's been said that Woolmer had been crook for quite a while due to the stresses of his coaching duties.I seriously doubt that he was murdered. More like he topped himself. Poor guy. RIP - dirtyharry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You are thinking of the '94 World Cup. From the wikipedia entry:
Andrés Escobar Saldarriaga (March 13, 1967 - July 2, 1994) was a Colombian football player, who was shot and killed in Medellín. The motivation for the murder is unclear; some attribute the murder to the own goal that Escobar scored in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, since that goal brought terrible gambling losses to several drug lords. Another theory is that his death was unrelated to soccer and was instead the result of a bar fight that left several people wounded.
Escobar's infamous own goal occurred in a match against the United States on 22 June during the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Stretching to cut out a US cross, he deflected the ball into his own net in the second match of Group A. The USA won the game 2–1, and as a result, Colombia was eliminated from the tournament in the first round.
I might not be able to cite wikipedia at school, but digg is still fair game:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrés_Escobar - zeeshansyed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@Tr33fiddy: ***** of *****!
Now when that's off my chest. I think he was a great coach. There are people in EVERY COUNTRY that take games very seriously! How about that jerk in USA who killed his own family and after investigation it was found that he was crazyyyy about an arcade game Virtua Cop. Some people might have used harsh language for Woolmer but I have been watching international TV and Pakistani TV, the whole nation is in shock and I haven't come across one Paki who is happy about Woolmer's death. They are all sad and like I said, very much in shock.
Mr. Woolmer, we'll miss you! We'll miss you indeed. THANK YOU from all the Pakistani cricket fans around the globe! - sid0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5^^ he's right. One day when our team wins we call them gods; the other day, when the team loses, we destroy their houses. It's mind-bendingly stupid.
- bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5umm noo. Dont you dare take anything away from me. The effigy of Greg Chappell was burnt in my country not Pakistan. Dude we're the masters of effigy burning
- sathias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I wonder how many people in Pakistan bet on Ireland to win? It certainly happened in the WC before last when Pakistan lost to Bangladesh.
- mukund, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I feel sorry for Pakistan and Bob. But I wonder what will happen to Greg Chappel?
If he doesn't die naturally he will be beaten to Death by Chappals(Kind of foot wear) if India Crashes out of the World Cup early becuz of loosing to Bangladesh.
India lost to Bangladesh in a similar fashion as Pakistan Lost to Ireland.
Both Bangladesh and Ireland are Relatively new to Cricket and so were taken lightly.
I think It was foolish on part of Pakistanis to Take Ireland Lightly as Ireland made Southafrica work hard for their victory in a previous Warm Up match. South Africa, one of the top 3 team in the world cup was crying at their scoreboard when it was 86 for 8 something.
The Point is Ireland proved that they are a good team against South Africa. Pakistan should have taken this as a warning.
Nevertheless I am happy that Pakistan is Out of WCup. :) But very sad about what happened to Bob.
This is a Big Loss To CRICKET... which is our Religion. - mikev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You're retarded.
- Rooster99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As a big cricket fan this came as a real big shock to me! Granted there were a few controversies that followed them around but I really dont think one can attribute the state of Pakistani cricket soley on him. Pakistan has been a team in turmoil for some time now. This is a real tragic outcome and its sad whether it was suicide, murder or natural causes.
RIP - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Tr33fiddy - Imran Khan is a douchebag...like you.
- Bonzodog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bob Woolmer died of Stress, basically. he was found unconscious in his hotel room, and rushed to hospital, where he later died. Although the exact cause of death is yet to be determined, he was known to have diabetes, and high blood pressure.
Pakistan Lives for cricket. They eat, sleep, and breath it. Losing the game to Ireland (where I live), was a massive humiliation to the team, and they are going to be publicly ridiculed from the government level down. The entire Selection committee has already resigned. The team are gong to need police protection when they get home, as people there will not be beyond physically attacking them. Bob knew he would have to go back to Pakistan with this, and it is thought the stress killed him. - Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9It's about time someone exposed the seedy underworld of cricket.
- decay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Someone's death is not a chance for you to be funny.
- mets91, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5One of the greatest coachs in Cricket..
You will be greatly missed...RIP.Bob Woolmer - BrewmasterC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sad. Reminds me of coach Oz : http://www.drake.edu/oncampus/archive/060200/images/Gary%20Osborn.jpg
He was the head women's track coach at Drake University. (home of the Drake relays) On the way back from the conference championships he noted he wasn't feeling to well. Around 3AM the next morning he died of a heart attack. - bluechips23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Certain sad events like this just remind us that sports, no matter how big the stage may be, is just sports. No one should die because of it. Sports are supposed to entertain people, not kill them. Things like this just hit us on our face and remind us how precious human life and happiness is and how to appreciate what we have.

- Bonzodog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1An Update:
Bob Woolmers death is now 'Suspicious'. - pritamgola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its very shocking, foreign coach has to think thousands time to coaching Pakistan or any south Asian country after this incident.
- Y2JCrisis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Cricket? Nobody understands cricket. You gotta know what a crumpet is to understand cricket.
- servicingyou, on 04/26/2009, -0/+0very shocking.
http://www.cricandcric.com - macaca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1First of all I don't see any connection of Pakistan losing and him dying. He was a great coach indeed. Well, Pakistan lost because of two reasons, a) they took unseeded Ireland for granted and b) they don't have a great players in their team, Because of the politics in Pakistan where true genuine players are never get selected in the team. You have to be an influential person to be in a team. History is proven in the past about cricket and politics' corruption. It all depends which caste and what region you are coming from. If you are a Mahajeer ( a migrant who migrated from either India or Bangladesh) forget about it. Truly speaking, Pakistan and India has a lots of talent in their country where you start playing cricket on streets at the age of 5

- kotram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RIP Woolmer.
Woolmer has been the backbone behind the success of many teams. I don't think that this loss has anything to do with his death. He has seen the loss of S/A to Aus few years back in the world cup. That must be a more shocking thing to him than this loss. - FazliS85, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3noo...just a retarded comment

Yeah, that person was Andrés Escobar, but he was a defender:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andr%C3%A9s_Escobar - ogore, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Yeah it was suicide. No foul play here unless his suicide note was faked
- zackz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Ok. The only reason pakistan even has a cricket team is because India has one. Like every aspect of their life, they live in India's shadows. Consider this: India decided to hire a foreign coach, pakis followed. India decided to name its team 'team india' guess what? Pakistan wanted one too 'team pakistan'! If India decides there'll be only three balls per over, I'm sure what'll follow
- Kyle660, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Dude...I don't think Tr33fiddy can hear you all the way down here. Try the reply button.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3While we are on the topic of cricket... Aussie!!! Aussie!!! Aussie!!!!
- Tr33fiddy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1rofl! Don't get pissed at me if your team skirts on the line between fair and cheating. Don't think it's my fault that your cricket board thinks results are more important than the integrity of the sport. Don't swear at me thinking I was the one who buried their drugs tests.
Even your own ex-players are embarrassed with your players, team and board.
Deal with it. - LonesomeFighter, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1It sucks. But some countries take it seriously. In certain places entire teams are killed for losing. Hell, wasn't a soccer goalie once killed cuz the ball bounced off his head and it scored on his team? He didn't deserve to die. But, this is another reason why I only play for team America.
I would hope Bob Woolmer died naturally, but I would not be surprised if he was killed over the game. - SavageBlackCat, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Allah's will has been done. Death to the infidel.
- amoo3, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6Im not much of a cricket fan, but isn't that the same as football or baseball in America? I mean come on, isn't it like over a billion dollars to put a commercial on the Super bowl?
It may be different in terms of the people (Who also have money riding on the games) but business wise it all the same...
Although I do agree that no one should die... - Amorn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Yep
