- jimbod, on 06/24/2009, -0/+14This system rocks! It was a major motivator to get me running, and yes, I taped my Nike+ sensor to my New Balance shoes and it worked fine. Sorry Nike.
- afrokinger, on 06/23/2009, -0/+11My New Balance sneaks came with a little cylinder cut out for Nike+. It's interesting how something that simple is influencing major brands.

- dvsbastard, on 06/24/2009, -0/+8I know... Which is the reason why I mentioned it... I just chose not to mention any specific application, simply because there are plenty of great apps depending on the phone platform you are using...
- inactive, on 06/22/2009, -1/+9What will Nike think of next?
- mooninite, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7It's already been done. Nokia Sports Tracker app does all what you described and has been around for over a year.
Nike, and Wired as usual, are behind the times. - dvsbastard, on 06/24/2009, -3/+8It's a great innovation... but a mobile phone + GPS + the right application can tell you all that (and more) all while providing you with live data, without restricting you to one pair of insanely expensive shoes...
- Isocene, on 06/24/2009, -1/+6You don't need to buy expensive shoes. You CAN get nike shoes that have an insert for the sensor inside the shoe, or you can get the $20 sensor and attach it to your shoe.
I opted to get a pair of nike shoes for $79 this weekend and logged my first run. I used it with the new iPhone that has the nike+ technology built in now. - kaji823, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4It's a cool system, but Nike shoes are terrible for your feet! Especially Shox. Elevated heel and padding FTL :(
barefoot running ftw! I wish I had this chip in my vibram five fingers, but I don't really do that much distance running - pjbarnoy, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Personal Imperial
- xerigen, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4I just bought a small velcro pouch, put the nike+ sensor inside and then velcroed the pouch and sensor to any pair of shoes I want.
- jesburger, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4OMG we're like soulmates now
- d03boy, on 06/24/2009, -1/+4Glad someone actually knows wtf they're talking about.
- gutistg, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3People tend to think in terms of tangible things, they don't respond well to abstractions.
- RadiatedAnt, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Nike+ FTW! I'm doing a 20:13 minute 5k thanks to the little wonder :) reaching for 19 now
- d03boy, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3It's because it was built by a man that raises cattle.
- Eisen4, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2Noone is the last name of the runner featured in the article. Read it before you criticize digg troll. Besides don't you think it's somewhat strange for it to read "No one knows that thanks to Nike+"
- dreamache, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2I use RunKeeper on my iPhone, which I attach to my arm with an arm band. It provides me with vocal reads outs of time, distance, current pace, current 1 mile run time, etc - and also automatically uploads it to your account at www.runkeeper.com and provides a time-based graph along side a google maps view of your track, in which you can see your speed vs. time vs. elevation.
Damn cool stuff. - ronfez, on 06/24/2009, -1/+3Garmin Forerunner >>>>> Nike Pedometer
- navidb, on 06/24/2009, -2/+4Nike has such an intangible, something not there but you feel it, kind of image in peoples minds. Some its evil, but for me I don't know how to describe it, they just seem so damn cool.
- Barackalypse, on 06/24/2009, -1/+3I always knew runners had some sort of internal brain wiring problems, but when they said the most popular power song was "Pump It" by the Black Eyed Peas it really drove home just how messed up they really are. Of all the motivational and driving songs they could have picked the most chosen one was that? Of course what can I expect from people overpaying Nike for offering something with substantially less functionality than a GPS datalogger.
- d03boy, on 06/24/2009, -0/+2All of the Nike shoes I've bought already had the hole built in. It's under the sole of the shoe.
- akatsuki, on 06/24/2009, -1/+3I was sad to see that Nike+ didn't go any further. I think Natal will be sweet at a gym - it could, for example read the weight you are lifting, evaluate your form and count reps for you. I've used some machines that do range of motion and count reps, but it would be nice to get some good metrics.
I've been using a Forerunner cause I want my routes.
The iPhone, when it supports a HR strap, bike stuff like cadence and power (basically ANT+Sport support), will be great. - foomojive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Everyone I've ever met who has a nike+ says it's great but they're still trying to get it calibrated just right. It never gets completely calibrated so that it accurately portrays distance. Also at the moment until they re-release the watch system it requires an iPod with a connector port so no ipod shuffles and no going without your iPod.
I got a garmin forerunner 305 on amazon and that thing is the bomb. I can glance at my wrist and see my current pace in real-time - a HUGE training aid in any kind of run. I can set up audio alerts on distance, high and low pace, and time. i can race against a previous time I did on a course and get a cool little animated guy showing me how far behind or ahead i am. I can set up complex workouts like reps and intervals. The GPS antenna works great and only goes out when i'm under a roof, although when it goes back on it does the math and figures out your pace in between. It's water-resistant and it comes with a heart rate monitor and can also snap on to a bike with a kit or go in a swimming cap for tris.
What's cool is you can import garmin forerunner data to SportTracks, the most awesome sports software ever. I got the google earth plugin so as soon as I import the day's data i can play back my run in 3D with speed mapped to color of the line and relative elevation displayed in 3D on the map. Plus you can select multiple runs and race them against eachother. It has a full training log with flexible chart reporting. It also uploads in one click to buckeyeoutdoors.com, a really awesome training site that auto-posts to twitter.
Nike+ is good for "motivating" you to run but I'm already motivated by my running goals. I need something to help me reach my goals better, not just something that records my total distance and time and tells me "good job." Kudos to Nike for making a easy and cheap system with a great web site, but a Garmin Forerunner is much more useful for me. - SecretAsianMann, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1All three of us!
I did the same thing till I read the article. - dignation, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Last names are weird, man.
- KingGorilla, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1I wonder how digg will handle this guy. ***** you
- Gatchaman, on 06/24/2009, -1/+2Been using the Nike+ sportsband for almost 2 years now. The online challenges and personal goals really keep you motivated to keep running.
- fragMasterFlash, on 06/24/2009, -4/+5Stats whore? Try gadget whore. A $10 pedometer and notepad would have gotten the job done.
- woofers07, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1I think a RTFA is in order here.
- askantik, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1It was made out of cattle, too, more than likely. The kicker is that the sneakers cost $90 and they paid the dude like 50 cents to make them. That's what makes them cool.
:) - orville1151, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Sorry.
But at least I caught my error right away and admitted it.
I should get at least a little love for that. - skipvt, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Gee, I don't know, but I can't wait to pay for it.
- JJ2K1, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Oh that's awesome! I liked the technology from Nike, but as a long distance runner I must say Nike makes some of the worst running shoes, so I never thought I would be able to use this technology.
- blankoboy, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Does it use the iPhone's built-in accelerometer for this? Frankly I see no need for the Nike+ device as the current iPhone/iPod Touch should be able to record similar data using it's own hardware.
- 1hrSleep, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1+1 to Vibrams!!
- gvlax50, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1"But what we've learned from companies like Google is that if you can collect enough data, there's no need for a grand theory to explain a phenomenon." - Even in an article about Nike, Wired still can't hide it's boner for Google.
- volcompimp, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1I use Nike+ & I'm lookin sexy. No joke. Already lost about 30-35 lbs, then started using Nike+ & about a month & close to 70 miles later I finalyl hit the 40 lb mark. Every time I get sick it messes up
my routine, need to get back into running. Took about a week or so off - askantik, on 06/24/2009, -2/+2***** Nike.
- AstroZombie138, on 06/24/2009, -1/+1Doesn't work with the iPhone though which is too bad. I have a Polar HR system which uses IR to transmit my stats back to my computer which is a pretty decent system.
- toddhh, on 06/24/2009, -0/+0Garmin Forerunner != Nike Pedometer
For those who already own and run with a supported ipod/iphone, dropping $29 on a Nike+ gives you a lot of functionality for a lot less than a Forerunner. - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -0/+0I dunno. More homely sneaker designs?
- aadsfasdf, on 06/24/2009, -3/+2I dont use the nike thing but lugging around a phone while jogging sucks.
- bonofosho, on 06/24/2009, -2/+0And yet Nike still made money because you used their sensor. They kinda win either way... until new balance comes out with their own sensor that is
- crossmr, on 06/24/2009, -7/+2"225 pounds when she was pregnant, has settled in at about 145." apples and oranges. Pregnancy weight compared to post-pregnancy weight is idiotic. They should be comparing her pre-pregnancy weight to her post-pregnancy weight. Pregnancy weight usually comes off easier and quicker because it was gained for a reason.
her stats don't quite make sense. 145lbs 1 hour running at 6mph = 661 calories burned (I realize she was heavier to start with, which means more calories burned) 48 hours @ 661 calories/hour is 31728 calories. If she started off heavier, she should have lost much more (225lbs at 6mph for 1 hour is 1025 calories), but they're showing she only lost 28672. Depending on how quickly she shed the weight she would have potentially lost thousands of more calories. Seems like the stat tracker is not adequately adjusting calories burned for weight. - inactive, on 06/24/2009, -7/+3Sweat shop metrics, how many calories the kids burn that make your shoes.
- orville1151, on 06/24/2009, -7/+1Oops. Never mind.
