- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Calling Tyson a Neanderthal is an insult to Neanderthals. The Neanderthals buried their dead with flowers and reverence. They cared for the sick, and tended wounds. They were a cultural powerhouse that lasted 100,000 years - we've only been around 28-35,000 years - and we have better global climate across the board. Neanderthals were supreme hunters & the masters of taking down BIG game. Tyson is a ***** pussy compared to the Neanderthal. How many more times can I type Neanderthal in this comment? Neanderthal.
- Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19"I truly hate fighting," Tyson said. "I've got a bad taste in my mouth."
Am I the only one who finds that slightly amusing? - richpav, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Tyson was a full-fledged neanderthal even before he became a boxer. Of course, I only say that because I doubt he reads Digg. (But if you give him a box of crayons, he might at least be able to color it in.)
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"punch and grope, punch and grope thats all I was taught"
- kirashira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13How do you blow 300 million dollars? Honestly. At least stash some in a swiss bank account.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15As opposed to being "Just another freak show" period?
- doctornkul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14It must be from Holyfield's ear.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9wow, i always imagined him having the intellect of Drederick Tatum, but for some reason, i feel really really bad for Mike. Not pity or sympathy, but something else, I don't know. He seems more human now, more.......connectible to. He doesn't want to fight anymore, even though he's good at it. People want him to do the only thing they think he can do. Who knows, maybe when he was younger he used to be a master of making Crystal Radio's, or maybe he enjoyed listening to radio jockeys and always wanted to be one. Just because he marvels at boxing doesn't mean he should be FORCED by people to do it.
I don't know, it seems kinda like, maybe we're the ones to blame for all of this that has happen to Tyson? I have no clue at all why I'm saying such things, but it feels like we corrupted him, forced him around as our little monkey to do tricks, or in this case fight. He seems like a real person underneath all that muscle. Man, if I were rich, I'd leave a check for 2 million under Mike's door with a note saying "Never fight ever again, achieve your dreams, prove everyone wrong"
me thinks i could make an Oscar-worthy script out of this.......anybody know Charlie Kaufman's agent?? - r00tus3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Proof of the fact that a fool and his money are soon parted.
...at any rate ... I thought Tyson was getting into porn ... - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@ jasgeo :
> Besides, boxing is pretty mellow compared to the likes
> of Ultimate Fighting.
you are wrong on that account. boxing has been shown to be demonstratbly the most dangerous sport. ultimate fighting is full of blood and such, but for many reasons, those fights can never go as far as to cause as much chronic or fatal damage as boxing does.

High incidence of chronic brain damage in the non-heavyweight categories, all because of repeated blows, often over 12 rounds of 3 minutes each! UFC events have none of these characteristics. In Ultimate Fighting there are no rounds, therefore, combatants cannot take a breather every 3 minutes to come out fresh and swinging repeatedly. This single factor is enough to reduce the risk of serious injury by a wide margin. In most cases, even the fittest athletes cannot muster up enough strength to be a serious threat after a few minutes of continuous action. There are no gloves, so a fighter's hands are not protected from delivering 500 punches per fight. Moreover, a hard punch landed by a bare knuckle can easily open up a cut sufficient to terminate the fight (Contrary to popular opinion, boxing would be a much safer sport in terms of chronic brain damage if no gloves were worn). There are no lower weight categories: The lightest weight class typically consists of participants who are at or near the 200 lb. limit.
- snip - - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18This is why I am opposed to boxing as a sport. It reduces human beings into something approaching neaderthals.
How many times do you see an interview with an ex boxer and its easy to see how badly their brains were damaged from years of fighting. They all speak slowly, often unintelligibly, and are quite clearly very very slow.
It's a barbaric sport and the money involved is ridiculous, especially when it's being given to people who couldn't manage a piss up in a brewery.
What a waste of millions that could do to charities or more deserving people but it goes to semi-morons who waste it on drugs, women and booze. - q3ctf4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"How do you blow 300 million dollars?"
I can't figure this out either. He went overboard thinking his money won't ever run out. Having math skills of a first grader probably doesn't help either. At least invest some of that money somewhere. Stupid. - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Are "we using quotes" too "much" in "the" title"?"
- funnycigarettes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5it's not that the "sweet science" is all that debilitating in general...it's just that some boxers just don't know when to throw in the towel
- dbug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Ah well, he's 40, he had a more eventful live than most people and he had it all. I don't feel sorry for him.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In a way I do feel sorry for the guy. The leeches and hangers-on, including Don King, stole most of this guy's money in one way or another. Now I know Mike blew a lot of it on stupid stuff but it's prteey evident that Mike's confidence lay in people who were only making money off him. If he did ignore warnings to slow down and rejected these, then it's his fault as much as anyone's.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He's just mad 50 Cent now owns his large mansion here in Farmington,CT. I will admit though, he looked pretty damn good in his last fight before he twisted his knee. When he got knocked down, he could've gotten back up, but he just gave up. He's a quitter...
- Soniti, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You guys all forgot he's a rapist as well.
Wife beater and rapist, and you guys feel sorry for him because he ran out of money?
Just goes to show: You can put the right spin on ANYTHING to make someone look like a victim.
~Soniti - AdamWeeden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2don't forget bite!
- spartanking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These exhibition boxing matches will probably take place in Pride FC. At a joint press conference in Las Vegas it was announced that Pride had signed a contract with Tyson. The rumour was that he would participate in 10 exhibition boxing matches.
I imagine his opponents will be people like Butterbean, Tank Abbott, and the like. - Mazgazine1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Umm, that quote about fighting HAS TO BE false, because he just signed on to PrideFC, an MMA association in Japan..
P.S. Can't wait for the Pride US debut!! - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man, i feel bad for Tyson and I admire him in many ways, even if it is for his weakness and how he is coming to terms and realizing his wrongs and how the whole celebrity superstar industry is all decadent... and all this without turning to some dogmatic religion for brainwashing and yabbering on about it
- DooDah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2he's a f**kin wife beater.....BAD MAN, he deserves nothing, and this deserves no digg, who cares, this aint news. its bullsh*t gossip.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@jellygraph:
Way to watch UFC for the last decade and a half.
"In Ultimate Fighting there are no rounds, therefore, combatants cannot take a breather every 3 minutes to come out fresh and swinging repeatedly." Actually, there ARE rounds and the fighters ARE given a chance to take a breather. Most fights are 3 rounds unless they're championship fights for belts/titles, in which case they are 5 rounds. However, the potential for permanent damage is lesser than boxing, due to the addition of submission TKO's. By putting your opponent in a chokehold or any other number of holds, you can force your opponent to tap out.
Just wanted to clear the air for the other 5 of you that don't watch UFC. :) - charlietuna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You got a problem with Neanderthals?
http://www.funnyclipcentral.com/content/geicocaveman3.php - dallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've heard that when he was a kid the only thing he loved to do was raise pigeons. He only got into boxing because he was poor and could make easy money doing it. That's what I heard anyway

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He'll probably soon get his own reality show from MTV and all will be back to normal
- RichWT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I cant believe SI didnt realize tyson just got signed with the largest MMA org in the world, hence the training.

- brachiator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@samfold -- indeed, my sentiments precisely. And extra points for the not-often-enough-used pissing contest / brewery line.
Maybe the solution beyond banning prizefighting as a matter of public policy is to require every fan to undergo a heavyweight beating and live in squalor for a year. Every promoter 2 beatings and 10 years in squalor. Hell, these people's appetite for watching other human beings destroy each other might rapidly diminish.
@jasgeo -- I'm awestruck by your masculinity and comfort level with your Oedipal problems. Nothing is quite so impressive as a guy whose first thought in an argument is about mom's panties. I'm usually busy working to come up with a retort, but you, ah, you have the luxury of pondering the maternal crotch! Congratulations... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the sign read, "Hear Brutus talk like Breanne"

thats false, there are 3 5 minute round for each professional ufc fight, but your right about boxing being worse. the worst injury sustained in an octogen in the ufc's stint history is a broken arm, where as death has occured in boxing matches. - utdrew182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I heard that when one of those $$$ sports cars he use to drive ran out of gas he would just get out, throw the keys in the seat, and call a cab.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spread that out into a 3 page treatment on yellow legal pad paper, & I'll have the ***** right on the phone.
- kounavi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i think i'll have to aggree with richpav and dbug.
- 0v3rk1ll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Poor bastard. Back then, he was THE MAN, and nobody could stop him. It's a shame things turned out this way for him.
- spamalope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1george foreman.
- squeekster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure I've seen an episode of The Simpson's where "Dredrick Tatum" is reduced to shilling for a casino. Life imitating art? And how does one go about blowing 300 mil? I imagine he had some "help" doing that... whatever, I feel for the guy, in his prime he was something.
- moronikos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Becomes"? I thought it was already a done deal.
- JeffreyLebowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By the looks of that pic, I thought they had unveiled a new wax display of Tyson at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. That's f'd up that it was actually Tyson in person. F'd up.
- ziptiespec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some of Mike's most memorable verbal spewage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pOE_9E8bpI - Duke218, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its sad really, but he has no one to blame but himself. Well, and Don King.
- NorCal05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I really want to feel bad for him. I can't, though, with the wife beating, the rape, biting Holyfield's ear, and everything else. I think he just doesn't have the mental ability to deal with the fame and success he had. Maybe if he had stuck to a simpler life none of this would have happened?
- EvanY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think it's so bad that Tyson has taken this tack. I'm sure it's quite lucrative and it's not even close to some of the more embarrassing moments in his life. He also has an international commentating gig (on boxing) and recently had a European visit at no expense to him. While he was reviled by many during his career he seems accepted and liked in his "retirement." I think he'll be OK but I hope he doesn't do anymore tattoo's on his face.
