- soulonfire928, on 07/21/2008, -2/+26That's all the reason I need not to compete in a triathlon...though pure laziness is my main motivator.
- webkami, on 07/21/2008, -0/+4de-motivator?
- sup4141, on 07/21/2008, -2/+39Nice picture to go with the story.
- hdar3415, on 07/21/2008, -0/+21That's not the picture I chose, but I guess Digg liked this one better.
- OpCzar, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5Kinda looks like Kevin Rose "home rowing" a guy in the face... from a distance.
- CLAWC, on 07/21/2008, -10/+3"See? Told you running was bad for your health.' That sux though
- MalTheObscure, on 07/21/2008, -3/+3He was swimming, dumbass.
- disrupter, on 07/21/2008, -12/+2No cause of death, no digg
- DeskFlyer, on 07/21/2008, -1/+6When the apparent cause of death is not known, they normally have to do an autopsy....be patient.
- Mootabolife, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3It's apparent Jeff Mathis killed him.
- shutaro, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Autopsy faster!

- 2Deluxe, on 07/21/2008, -4/+9Poor guy, he probably died doing something he loved though :-/
Meanwhile - Oi, Oi, Oi.- cjshamrock, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Dugg for the Oi!
- sockpuppets, on 07/21/2008, -14/+10Did he drop any good loot?
- Puffles, on 07/21/2008, -3/+9An armor set with +5 movement speed. Weak defense rating, though.
- TimPV3, on 07/21/2008, -12/+3Hope his teammates aren't still waiting for him.

- IglooBurner, on 07/21/2008, -2/+1You can have relay triathlons too. Its very possible that he might have teammates. But relays for anything less than a half ironman is kinda pointless.
- shortkid422, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4I'm surprised there haven't been more (and glad there aren't) considering how hard the athletes push themselves. RIP.
- leladax, on 07/21/2008, -4/+7at 27 we become fragile.
- ripple123, on 07/21/2008, -3/+6SHUT UP! YOUR WRONG! wrong. So wrong. I don't wanna hear that. Mostly cause im 26. And your right.
- troon, on 07/21/2008, -0/+12On the bright side, at 27 we learn how to use apostrophes.
- kilodelta, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5so true (me = 32 years old and completely broken)
- Millsee, on 07/21/2008, -0/+6me = 35
*****. - TheNakedChef, on 07/21/2008, -2/+4The only thing that's fragile is your mind. I'm 30 and going for 31 and I take my motorcycle to it's and mostly my limits and push it beyond those limits. I train in gym 3 days a week strenght/power/olympic lifting and I've just joined a dragon boat racing. I'm at my peak now after wasting most of my previous life on computers. And I do all of this besides having 3 knee surgeries (soccer) and bad hernia in my leg.
If you feel that you are broken/*****/useless, that's what you will end up being.- IglooBurner, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2I've been doing dragonboat for the past 9 years, its an awesome sport, very competitive, and challenging. I love every part of it, especially traveling all over to race. I'm from Metro Athletic Dragons from NYC, we get our asses handed back to us every year by the Canadians, kinda sucks, but one day.. we'll beat them.
- TheNakedChef, on 07/21/2008, -0/+3Dragon boats seems to be a good sport and I'm going to keep doing it, especially since I can't run it's my cardio alternative, it also gives a good buzz, not as good as riding bikes, but not much can compare.
- r00tus3r, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Wait, a hernia in your leg? Is that even possible? Yikes.
- TheNakedChef, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Yeap, in the muscle that moves my foot up, forgot it's name, just means that membrane around the muscle is split and the muscle spills out a bit, it's only visible when the muscle is contracted. It reduces the strength of the muscle, range of motion and especially endurance. It's a bitch, but I've seen worse things. Life's too short to worry about such stuff, there are too many things to do and see to let it slow me down.
- IglooBurner, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2U'd be surprise, most of the better tri athletes are well over 35... those older guys are freakin fast man.
- shutaro, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1At 27 we become Italian?
- ripple123, on 07/21/2008, -3/+6SHUT UP! YOUR WRONG! wrong. So wrong. I don't wanna hear that. Mostly cause im 26. And your right.
- rayjitsu, on 07/21/2008, -3/+4Just sad.... All that exercising and cardiovascular fitness for nothing.
- ripple123, on 07/21/2008, -12/+6Its always nice when joggers decide to die without me swerving to run over them.
- shutaro, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1But then you don't get the 500 points for hitting them...
- monstarmike, on 07/21/2008, -9/+2He's the only one they found floating in the Hudson river? Perhaps he was there to sleep with the fishes?
- fr3ddie, on 07/21/2008, -9/+2He should have tried competitive eating instead.
- tom6a, on 07/21/2008, -1/+2Peter Shankman was planning on competing in the tri but had to drop out at the last minute.

- Funpolice2050, on 07/21/2008, -0/+11Digg the grave. Bury the body.
- JaRail, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5I recently lifeguarded the ITU's world championship in vancouver. Some of the swims one morning were called off by the lifeguards because of sketchy conditions (large waves, cold water, etc). That was at a world championship where people knew how to swim. That sucks for everyone but people understood that safety absolutely must come first, even with international media watching you can't cut corners. We can't jump to any quick conclusions here until the autopsy is completed and we know what symptoms would have been visible to lifeguards. But even so, he went unconscious and the event staff had to be notified by other competitors.
I wasn't there so we can only trust the reports we have but so far that sounds like a hole in their coverage. They need eyes on everything scanning constantly. It's not rocket science. You zone it up and watch it like crazy or have people on paddle boards/kayaks/whatever following the packs right up close. You have a system where the first responders can pass people off to power-boats and go straight back to guarding up close and personal. That's an over-simplification but you get the idea. No holes, ever. Even when half a dozen people go under in different places at the same time, as can happen in mass starts, the system needs to work such that reconfigurations happen and holes are covered in less than 15-30 seconds roughly. To any lifeguards from this event, this is not directed at you. I'm speaking to those who might want to understand how guarding the water for an event like this works. I have no specific knowledge of this particular event and understand completely how it feels to have something like this happen in your community/facility. It's not fun. I'm sorry for the family, friends, and everyone this affects.
I greatly enjoy triathlons and hope this turns out to have been due to a medical condition rather than an accident. It's not easy to put on something of this magnitude so there are many people at that event who deserve a lot of credit for jobs well done. Either way though, I hope this will help spread awareness and education for safer events in the future.- trevorsnyder, on 07/21/2008, -1/+4Why does safety have to come first? I thought we lived in the free part of the world? Why can't people take some risks if they feel like it?
- rasensio, on 07/21/2008, -0/+5I'm ex triathlete from Argentina. Here we are very sad for this event. To all the diggers who say about the water conditions I will tell you that I ran with rain, freaking big waves in the atlantic and 110 degrees in a river. The :not that great: weather is usual. The important thing here is that the lifeguards and canoe boys must be alert 110% of the time in the water to help anyone with problems. Anyone can fall. Runners must be responsible of take care his own health doing all the required medical exams. I think that the NY triathlon organization has no responsibility on this event.
My Condolences to the family here. - Risingashes, on 07/21/2008, -4/+4Is there a reason that we should care specifically about this guy? People die every day from accidents and we are supposed to morn someone who deliberately put themselves in a dangerous situation?
Where is the 'Man, 23, dies in an unfortunate tumble down some steps' article? The 'Man, 64, died from a heart attack' article?- elithebest, on 07/21/2008, -3/+1Another wise-ass trying to sound like an intellectual on digg.
- ProUSADigger, on 07/21/2008, -1/+0An itellectual on digg? Now THAT'S funny.
- daRoach, on 07/21/2008, -3/+1Because this is the first time in the eight year tradition that anyone has died competing in the triathlon. Didn't you read the article, hell it was in the description of the story.
- elithebest, on 07/21/2008, -3/+1Another wise-ass trying to sound like an intellectual on digg.
- matthewrex, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2EXERCISING KILLS!
- alperea, on 07/21/2008, -2/+11Maybe he thought it was a dieathalon
- Antimatter85, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1This is horrible, and I love you for it.
- CherrySmith123, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1What a way to go....sad ;(
- diggdiggdug, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I have done many Triathlons and this is exceedingly rare. Most tris take a great deal of preparation and training to prepare. So by default competitors are in very good shape and healthy.
- GPSCenter, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1And the moral of the story is, it's always better to watch a triathlon than be in one.
- HanSolo69, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Was he actually in the triathlon, or just another run-of-the-mill corpse of an Argentinian?
- ProUSADigger, on 07/22/2008, -0/+0Way too young to go.
May his family find peace. - jblifestyles, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1So sad.
- MysticSavage, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1What happened, did they put the swimming last?
