- mrmod, on 02/23/2009, -0/+10A US cycling event is being recognized by non-cyclists? The world is changing for the better.
- A2Ska, on 02/23/2009, -0/+8It was great to see this on television all week.
- ericdano, on 02/23/2009, -0/+7Astana is going to be insane this year. The Tour they have Lance Armstrong, Levi, and Alberto.......
So much talent...... - theblueprint, on 02/23/2009, -0/+7Glad to have a top-flight race on American soil.
- novenator, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6I've never even heard of this. Thx Surferess
- Surferess, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6Oh DickFace, behave yourself! lol
YW Novenator. It is fairly new, but over 2 million people showed up to watch the ending yesterday which was the most spectators at a "stage event" ever in US history. It is rivaling the Tour de France, unless, of course, you ask a Frenchman. - DaviDTC, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6Astana is going to rule the Tour De France. Armstrong showed if needed he can still content for the win in France. I think it will be Leipheimer though.
- gttim, on 02/23/2009, -1/+5Levi aims for and wins the race that everybody else uses for training!
- guiltyblade, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4over 2 million people went to see it. Almost double the last year cause of Lance. Amazing really.
The funny thing is lance got 7th. 7TH and he wasn't even trying. Its insane. - gttim, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3Levi will not be the team leader for the Tour. That will be Contador or Contador and Armstrong as co-leaders.
- ChromaVita, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3That picture looks like it was made out of lego.
- kenlaw, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3It would have been even better if Versus had accurately estimated the length of each stage. If you did not watch live, then you missed the finish of most of the stages.
Astana is stacked to WIN. - Hincapie, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3will be a good tour de france for sure!
- apio, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2rivaling the tour de france?
lol
they want to move the toc to the second half of april, but can't because few serious riders would prefer california over the spring classics.
and for the ones training for the giro the trip would be too far.
it's really good to see so many people visit the toc, even in horrible weather, but it's never going to rival against any of the big european races. - xr56n44, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2low blow, and ignorant assessment. the CA tour was LOADED with the who's who of cycling this year. this race is rapidly growing in scope and is now the premiere cycling event in the USA. outside of the 3 grand tours (FR, IT, SP) this is maybe the top race, and if it's not, it will be soon, like next year even.
did you happen to see the number of people coming out for the mountain stage? it was as much of a carnival atmosphere as the TDF. if they made this race a 3 to 4 week event, it would instantly skyrocket to the status of grand tour. - gttim, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2By something happening to Contador, do you mean like Lance's pump getting caught in his front spokes?
If Levi does the Tour, he will be a domestique. - Imagine3, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2Yeah, I have my money on Contador. But I am going to make a prediction that something will happen to him in one of the first mountain climbs. Then Lance will take over.
Is Levi even doing the Tour this year? I thought I heard something about him skipping it. - mccrew, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Speaking as one who braved the rains in Santa Rosa to see the finale of stage 1, it was a great race to follow. What made it all the more interesting this year was that several of the riders were twittering the whole time (lancearmstrong, Levi_Leipheimer, ChristianVDV, TomLPeterson, dzabriskie, and ghincapie to drop a few names). It was fun to peek behind the scenes and hear from the riders directly.
My favorite tweet: Christian Van De Velde, after winning the most aggressive rider award on Saturday remarking about Sunday's final stage, "I don't want to go to school today." - kwilms, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1http://twitpic.com/1n70h - Horner, Levi, and Lance at the finish.
- trer, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1http://sports.yahoo.com/sc/gallery;_ylt=Ai.URtKGg_ ...
Lucky guy, Levi! Would love to see those two babes naked... - youjettisonme, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Andy Schleck weighs as much as an 11 year old girl. He can't TT. The winner will come from the Astana camp or else Cadel Evans will finally break through. Still, Contador is close to untouchable right now so either Armstrong pulls out some TTs that mimic his TT domination of 4 years ago, or some whacky inter-team tactics happen like when Cunego fluked the Giro several years back and left Simoni scratching his head.
- nadalbg, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Always the best!
- DenverMadMax, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Contador is definitely the main man for the long tours of this team. Armstrong is going to be warn from doing so much in the season beforehand (i.e. the Giro) and Contador is in his physical prime.
- mrfanboy, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1"It is rivaling the Tour de France, unless, of course, you ask a Frenchman."
It needs a new date if it's ever going to rival the likes of the Tours of Romandie, Germany or even Ireland, let alone the Tour de France. It was a good course, but there was very little competition for Leipheimer (For the third year running) in the end as for most it is a training ride and will stay so if it remains in February. - immatellyouwhat, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1I'm not fat though so err wrong.
- xr56n44, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1i've noticed that only really fat people make comments like that, probably because they can't feel their sit bones through all that blubber. but who can blame their ignorance, because when they sit on a regular chair it looks like saddlebags. on a bike it would look like jowls on a bulldog. LOL
- fujiubear, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1sorry man, lance was definitely trying. levi dropped lance (and the rest of their field) up the climb before santa cruz, and smoked lance in the time trial by almost 90 seconds. lance is a hero of mine, but is not in grand tour shape yet. he probably will be in the giro d'italia and the tour de france, but will still lose to contador.
- gttim, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Did you not notice that most teams were not going for the GC win? Did you not notice Cancellara going home because he had the sniffles- it wasn't worth jeopardizing his classics season? Tyler Hamilton had not even been training because of his mother's illness? The only other guys in shape were the Australians, because this happens to be the middle of the race season in the southern hemisphere. This is February, for God's sake. Nobody who is going to be a serious contender for the Grand Tours or other important races is going to try and peak for this!
This is the middle of base training time for cyclists. They are not in racing form. This was expressed in interviews by almost every team. Nobody, except Levi, had targeted this race. Sure it is great for California, and lots of people attend, but it is nowhere near the top race in the world outside of the Grand Tours. That is just a ridiculous statement. There are many European races that will always be more important than the ToC. There are one day classic and short stage races that will always be more important. This is a nice American race, but it is an American race. - novenator, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1Me092, is that you?
- xr56n44, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1cyclists are the most strictly drug tested athletes in the world. EVERY leader (including jersey winners) of EVERY stage gets tested, plus most of the next closest competing riders, AND a good bunch of the rest of the field is random tested. that's why they catch so many. Lance has NEVER tested positive despite being the most drug tested athlete in the world. Levi has never tested positive either.
now let's talk baseball, like who are the other names on that list of 104 where A-Roid's name was leaked. i'll bet we find out soon, and that will shift the stereotype for doper from cycling to baseball players. - Imagine3, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1It will never rival the Tour de France, but it is going in popularity and I do think that one day it will surpass the popularity of some of the other smaller stage races in Europe. But, yeah, it is not going to survive France, Giro or Spain.
- mborys88, on 02/24/2009, -0/+0Lance has filled a void I couldn't quite place in last years season of cycling. It was great that Sastre won the TdF. I couldn't think of a more deserving rider. But Lance is back! Everyone in the peloton is going to be out for blood in every race Lance participates.
- xr56n44, on 02/23/2009, -1/+1no he is not going to win. plus both schleck brothers have already been questioned about doping. i'm guessing andy and frank are much more likely to follow in floyd landis' footsteps than lance armstrongs.
- Hincapie, on 02/23/2009, -1/+1george hincapie ftw
- apio, on 02/23/2009, -1/+1andy schleck is going to win
- salinemist, on 02/23/2009, -1/+1CHRIS HORNER FTW!
- youjettisonme, on 02/23/2009, -1/+0Don't sleep on Kloden.
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -3/+2How do you content?
- immatellyouwhat, on 02/23/2009, -2/+1Looks like he had to clench his ass to make it through with those tiny seats.
- d4ftpunk, on 02/23/2009, -5/+0If you by talent mean EPO....
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -7/+0stfu, brown-noser
- moosejaw99, on 02/23/2009, -8/+1I wonder if he takes the same drugs as Lance.
