- Jeepinator, on 07/14/2009, -0/+15It's rare that you have 4 guys on one team that are completely capable of winning the Tour overall. Team Astana members are in 4 out of the top 5 standings overall. That is absolutely unheard of, especially by stage 10. This team is in a unique situation. From what I have seen while watching the Tour, Lance isn't doing anything that Contador wouldn't do to him. Lance takes opportunities and runs with them. If Contador isn't there to take advantage of a break-away or something, then Lance will be. When Lance needs to be a real teammate he is.
- BobSagetFan, on 07/14/2009, -9/+24GO LANCE!
***** THE FRENCH - chesstwin, on 07/14/2009, -1/+15Not if he is still up there with the best. If he can stay top 5 after the Alps then he's basically one of the best out there still. No reason to retire.
- Wildthing, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8Maybe it's because I know many people who have been affected by cancer, some surviving some not, but Lance is such a great reminder that sometimes you can overcome obstacles that life throws at you and go on to do remarkable things. I bet he wakes up every morning looking forward to the pain in his legs that riding brings simply because he knows that he was supposed to be dead but he said "***** YOU" to cancer and became the record 7 time Tour de France winner.
Keep hope, people who have been affected by cancer. - sychodan, on 07/14/2009, -1/+9Livestrong Lance, livestrong.
- UnterDenLinden, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8That made me laugh. Thanks!
- fragMasterFlash, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7Lance refuses to fade away. He rides the like the grim reaper's cancer wagon is chasing after him.
- Wareznuke, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7Attention whoring for his cancer awareness and research program.
- useraccess, on 07/14/2009, -0/+6Yeah, when they catch up to him!
- Ajjah, on 07/14/2009, -1/+6Except for the fact that he was tied for first place, and is now sitting in 3rd because he was back stabbed by Contador on an ill-advised attack that he could not chase down, because it was his teammate.
- ericdano, on 07/14/2009, -1/+6Lance is on his game. Wait till Stage 20. That is where everything will be decided. He will win that stage. He pretty much said so.
- Wareznuke, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5literally a nut.
- Wareznuke, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Uhhh... Lance in 37 and has the physical abilities of a Nazi-ubersoldat.
- stoeckd, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Also: Contador is Spanish.
...but ***** the French. - blaxbb, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4uhhh.....5 out of 9 (top 5 except Kloden) of Astana's riders in the tour are former riders of Team Discovery, Johann Bruyneel's team. The new Astana is pretty much a reborn Discovery without Hincapie.
- mhf03, on 07/14/2009, -1/+5Man is a Beast
- Barackalypse, on 07/14/2009, -3/+7No way, a rivalry with another guy trying to win the same race as him?! Next you're going to tell me Venus and Serena Williams feel the same way when they're in a match against eachother.
- Stavrosian, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4You know he's actually wildly popular in France, right? Don't take your cue from their media and sports administrators any more than you would want them to take their cue from yours.
- topgigmedia, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Congrats... must uninformed comment of the day!
- warMen, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3he's 37
- Erebos, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Team Astana is also the most heavily tested team by the anti-doping agency this year, especially Lance.
- cyrix, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3The difference here is that these teams usually have riders built around a leader. Right now Astana has two men vying for that leadership role, armstrong and contador. The other riders are there more for support to help their lead rider win the race for the most part. Road racing is fickle as hell, but it is heavily reliant on team dynamics and while Astana in general is performing amazing well, problems might arise later.
- Kinneas12, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3That pic belongs in a 4chan meme.
- cyrix, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Stavrosian is right though. The french people have been highly supportive of Armstrong in this tour. They've had up banners showing support and they know he's brought back enthusiasm to the race.
“The thing I respect about him is, he sets himself a goal, and keeps going. He trains like a madman—more than the French,” says Sénéchal Béranger, 24, an engineer and amateur cyclist.
“In the past he was a bit arrogant, but now he’s more likable,” says Raymond Danet, 61, enjoying a beer in front of a Tour broadcast Thursday. “I think others will change their opinion of him.”
I wish I could find the exact quotes by several members of the French media outlets, but they were overwhelmingly positive remarks. - Brassbud, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2You saw him repressing me, didn't you?
- SPRFRKR, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2One of the better twitter feeds he personally updates: http://twitter.com/lancearmstrong
- fascistpig, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3But he also won the Giro d' Italia in 2008 and the Vuelta de Espana (too lazy to do the tilde). He wasn't allowed to compete due to a doping scandal with Astana in 2008, but most likely he would have won that too. Also, during the 2007 tour, Contador was in the white jersey, meaning he was the best young rider, and not the Discovery team leader (that would have been Levi) so he had less support from the team until he started to become a contender. If Rasmussen didn't get kicked out of The Tour, he would have placed 2nd in his FIRST Tour de France.
- icndvl, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2The guy is in his late 40s winning tour de frances, I'm in my mid 20s and get tired walking up the stairs...makes you think.
- Wareznuke, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2Alberto only won the tour in 2007 because Rasmussen was disqualified for alleged doping.
- Jeepinator, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Unfortunately the sport is plagued by doping. This year we know that at least Lance hasn't been doing any sort of doping. I have good faith in Levi, too, but then again I trusted Tyler Hamilton as well.
- sobe4u8k, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Anyone who knows a scratch about both of those athletes knows that this comment is ludicrous.
- sobe4u8k, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2Lance and Levi FTW. Contador is almost as bad as Cavendish selfishly speaking. His dick move at the end of stage seven was the last straw for me, and what did lance the seasoned vet do, just let him have his glory. but Contador still isn't in yellow. Just goes to show, backstabbing might get you close to the top, but they sure as ***** won't keep you there, this isn't Lance's first rodeo. Vive le tour de Lance!
- FattyCorpuscle, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Dat Lance?
- erkokite, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Way to completely underrate Mr. Armstrong.
- Stavrosian, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2Unfortunately, when one team is performing so well it raises uncomfortable questions. Especially when that team is Astana and we know the uncomfortable facts in their not-too-distant past (being forced to withdraw from the Tour in 2006 because more than half of their riders were implicated in a doping scandal, again being forced to pull out in 2007 after Vinokourov was busted for blood doping, two other riders being sacked for blood doping, the team being barred from the 2008 tour because of the endless string of doping scandals.)
Still, they're under new management. Of course, that management is Johann Bruyneel, and there have been suspicions about the surprising ease with which his teams have made it through the race in the past. Here's hoping that he's the luckiest guy in the world and everybody who rides for him just happens to be a preternaturally gifted athlete. - kwilms, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1I've been trying to follow the tour by watching the replays at night. Contador vs Lance is a fun plot line.
- cyrix, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Ah, I found the quote from the reporter:
But hearts are melting toward the old guy, even French ones. One French reporter stood up Tuesday and said, "Lance, in four days, you have brought more excitement back to the Tour de France than we had in four years here." When the French start admiring Armstrong, you know the worm has turned. - lichnor, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Soccer (in the US) is envious.
- sobe4u8k, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1I'd Digg it twice if I could.
- mweels, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2You missed the drug enforcement dicks that have give him ***** all day long - for his entire career.
- topgigmedia, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1and riding with a broken clavicle this year as well.
- cyrix, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1dat ass.....
- stoeckd, on 07/14/2009, -2/+2CNN fail... it's Alberto Contador, winner of the 2007 Tour de France, not 'Carlos'.
- Riggaberto, on 07/14/2009, -2/+2i hate digg users so much, I can't believe this comment is dugg positively.
- inactive, on 07/14/2009, -2/+2They're using some good *****. That's for sure.
- Presbyterian, on 07/14/2009, -0/+0Wait sorry, which guy are you talking about?.
- thaprinze, on 07/14/2009, -4/+3Next year too?? The man is nut!!
- scsikiddy, on 07/14/2009, -3/+2No-one has said it? Lance Armstrong is a douche!
- DudeOfJustice, on 07/14/2009, -1/+0I'm not buying this. Armstrong and Brunyeel decided who was winning this thing months ago. Half of the Tour is mind games, and they're playing mind games with us and the other teams.
