L.A. Times sports writer reveals he's Transsexual
sports.espn.go.com — A veteran sports writer for the LA Times said in his column Thursday that he is a transsexual. Mike Penner told readers of his struggle to embrace his gender and said when he returns from vacation in a few weeks he will be known as Christine Daniels. He did not say whether he was having surgery or why he's changing his last name.

Publicly announcing, to sports fans, that you're going to be losing your balls and becoming a woman... well, it takes balls.
I hope the GLBT community gives him props for raising awareness.- rAid135, on 10/12/2007, -17/+43Only because sports has become so homophobic
- shanthp, on 10/12/2007, -26/+9He joins the ranks of Jillian Barberie.
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -62/+21A medal? Why? He's not doing anything remarkable, he's changing his gender and being loud about it. Why do you think there are so many homophobes out there? Rubbing things in their face that they aren't comfortable with.
waiting to be called a homophobe in.... - TheAkolyte, on 10/12/2007, -12/+32Mmmm... nothing more heterosexual than patting your sweaty friends ass after a nice long "work out."
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -52/+16No one is ever applauded for being overtly heterosexual so why claim someone should be awarded for 'coming out' about being a homosexual? I don't see why it should be made into such a huge deal.
- poedguy, on 10/12/2007, -13/+57Please do some research, there's a massive difference between homosexuality and transsexuality.
- OUChevelleSS, on 10/12/2007, -29/+7No, he doesn't deserve a medal.
It's fine that he is what he is, but keep your private business private and you won't have people complaining or caring, and then you won't complain about not being cared about. - kflasch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18@bobcrotch:
Admitting something like this is not rubbing it in *anyone*'s face and I fail to see how it could be interpreted as such unless one wants to play the victim.
It is remarkable to come out as transgendered (or homosexual as you also mention) because our society is still relatively intolerant of it, especially the sports community. While I look forward to a society where being transgendered or homosexual is not considered remarkable and widely accepted, that day is not here yet. It is still difficult. I wouldn't say she seriously deserves a medal, but I am proud of her for not having to hide it. - eitheehstsergei, on 10/12/2007, -27/+2i dont see why this guy or girl or thing (it) deserves any medal. *it* is only doing this because *it* wants people to know what its new alias is. not because he wants to be a beacon of light for all transexuals in distress to follow. that and pity of course. it definitely wants pity. dont kid yourself, its not trying to be a hero, it doesnt have the balls to do so, literally. hahahaha
- tidu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I applaud him for being open about his decision, but the very fact that we all think this is "news" contradicts our ideas on how these actions should be common or at least let be, instead of having a fuss be made about them.
- KuntaKinte, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Will Marv Albert do the same? YYYYYYESSSSSS!
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6"It is remarkable to come out as transgendered (or homosexual as you also mention) because our society is still relatively intolerant of it"
By that logic if i went out and killed someone i should be praised since people are intolerant of murders, or maybe i should molest a young girl, people are intolerant of that too. I support this dudes right to waste his money on unneccesary cosmetic surgery but i dont need to hear about it. - gmillerd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3While money cannot buy love and all that and he might be at peace, he just destroyed his 'real world' self. I hope he has a new gig somewhere that's viable. I am not sure a 'my last 40 years' bio-book is going to pay the bills.
- kflasch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@benitojuarez:
Well first and foremost, remarkable doesn't necessarily mean praise. Check out a dictionary.
I certainly was not saying someone should be praised for just doing something uncommon. Some things, however, are uncommon but should be accepted by some peoples' standards. Society does not stand still and lo and behold, those of us that want it to change for the better will be happy when it does.
And you don't need to hear about it? Give me an effing break. The news is full of things that people might not want to hear about. I fail to see how you are put out by reading a sentence. You could have ignored it but you chose to pursue it by commenting about it. It's the same ***** as people thinking it's being rubbed in their face. - JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -55/+11So being "open minded" entails the support of freaks who feel the need to physically mutilate themselves because they're too whiney about the way they were born? I'm not closed minded, they're just weak.

- shin_en, on 10/12/2007, -19/+3I thought transexual meant you just cross dress? Isn't it supposed to be transgender?

- Fhionnlaoch, on 10/12/2007, -27/+17There is an extreme disconnect with reality when one simply becomes a woman by believing it or by mutilating one's genitalia. I, for one, refuse to take part in cognitive dissonance.
- deweyhewson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9If you knew anything about any of it you'd know how much of an idiot you are.
You don't just "choose" to become a man or woman. There's a whole lot more to it than just what you've got between your legs.
Moron... - KalvinCoolEdge, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7So what is it exactly that makes someone a woman? And what about those who are born sexually ambiguous?(1 of every 3000 births in the US) Do they not have the right to choose a gender? If it was your child, would you refuse to refer to it as a he or a she simply because you believe it to be an it? It's not as black and white as you make it seem.
- HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Well Dewey, sweety, there IS a whole lot more to it than just what you've got between your legs.
It's called chromosomes. Little girls have two X's. Little boys have an X and a Y. No amount of slicing and dicing can alter chromosomes. So whether you have a dick between your legs or not, possession of an X and Y makes you male, and possession of two Y's makes you female.
End of discussion. - deweyhewson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Well, it could be the end of the discussion if you were right. But you're not. Let me correct you: two Xs make you a female.
And what about XO, or XXY, or XXXY, or Turner's syndrome, etc.?
There is a HUGE difference between physical sex and gender identity.
1 in 20,000 babies are born with ambiguous genitalia.
1 in 426 babies are born with unusual sex chromosomes
1 in 500 baby boys have an extra X chromosome
1 in 2,000 babies are born with only one X chromosome and no Y (XO)
What would you call those people? "Its"?
For hundreds of years the medical profession, and uninformed people, have tried to force gender on people. It doesn't work. It never has.
Do some research, and then ask yourself if you can still be as cocky with your black and white view of the world. - KalvinCoolEdge, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Jaime lee curtis was born with both an X and a Y chromosome, by your definition that makes her a man. She would probably be pretty offended if you said that to her face however.
- HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Well Dewey, you did call one thing right...two X's make a woman and I stand corrected.
I typed "Y" in haste, but you seem to think that makes the point of my statement wrong. The point of my statement is that chromosomal makeup can not be changed with surgery or a person's "beliefs".
The defects you mentioned are just that ...defects. The people like the clown mentioned apparently don't have any of those defects, they're just nutty. How many women who have their cooters sewn shut or men who have their winkys sliced off have any kind of chromosomal defect? If you can show some kind of evidence of that correlation, I might buy into a little of your argument.
@Kalvin
I refer your ***** statement to snopes.com:
http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/jamie.htm - KalvinCoolEdge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5From your link:
Claim: Actress Jamie Lee Curtis was born with both male and female sex organs.
Status: Undetermined.
So basically you have no point. And regardless, such cases do exist. - deweyhewson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, how about the woman (used to be a man) who I talked to on Tuesday who has had the operation?
How about the twin boys situation, where one had a circumcision go wrong, and lost his penis, so was raised as a girl? He (She) attempted suicide multiple times before the truth was revealed to him. (She) had the operation to become a man, and is now happy with his identity. (Source: "Human Sexuality Today", Bruce M. King)
There are countless cases like those where the physical side of things did not match the chromosomes.
Jjust ask yourself a simple question: Why in the world would somebody decide to make the switch unless there were underlying emotional/spiritual/mental inconsistencies that led to it?
It's not like it is cheap, easy, or a perfect operation.
The new "vagina" does not lubricate on its own. The new "penis" can not naturally get erect.
It's not exactly a corner drug-store quickfix. - iainc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@HarryBauzonia: XX and XY is so yesterday's news, research has moved on a bit. Bet you still think the Earth is flat, don't you?

- mAarontheGREAT, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7it says he's married...i wonder how his spouse feels about this...i assume they've been in the dark about it along with the rest of the world...
that would be a sucky way to head into the weekend :-P- spookyttws, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13My Government teacher in high school was happily married for some 15 years before he went through with becoming a transgender female. His wife then became his roommate. It doesn't change who you are, just how the world views you and how you feel about yourself. Love and support are strong things with the right people.
- bitsyboffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hmm, that raises an interesting question. If somebody is married heterosexually (physically at least) in a locality which does not permit "gay marriage", and becomes trans-gendered at a later date, and the couple stays togethor, does that nullify the marriage.
- boyasunder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@bitsy...
That's actually happened, in Texas, I believe. It also depends on the local law about determining sex after a sex change. Some states go by chromosomes, and some allow you to change the gender on your records. - catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I also wonder why he's changing his last name. It sounds like a porn name or something.
- HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I don't see how it could nullify a marriage because no one can really change their sex. Sure you can change your physical appearance but you can't do a damned thing to change your chromosomes.

Typically when you make the change you are required to take hormones (either testosterone or estrogen, depending on the sex you are assuming), and also "live" as the opposite gender for 1-2 years to give those around you time to adjust.
I don't know if Mike Penner did either one, but in general that's how it works.
In short, kudos to him for having the courage. - mal1964, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4life is kinda funny you just don't know from day to day. you could wake up tomorrow and said to yourself i think i cut my dick off today

Changed his sex in 2006. Story: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/03/20/DDGR9HQ5S11.DTL
About mid way down:
"Klaus, 41, is one of an estimated 12,000 transsexual women in the United States, a population that's not only growing but inching toward social acceptability. Felicity Huffman won a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination this year for playing Bree, a hapless sex-change candidate in the comedy "Transamerica." And Larry Wachowski, one of the co-directors of "The Matrix" film trilogy and producer of "V for Vendetta," has changed his sex and is now living as Lana Wachowski."

No one can change their gender.
You can cut off body parts, you can sew chunks of meat on, you can take hormone injections, and wear high heels and a wig. None of those things makes you the opposite gender. It only makes you a freak; like Michael Jackson.- lazyc0mmunist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Nice personal jab at Michael Jackson, who happens to not be transsexual, nor in any way related to this story.

- poedguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Once again, people are commenting on topics they have no knowledge of. Gender is not what's between your legs, it is what you see yourself as.
- kiyyik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Oo yeah! We are *everywhere*! Aboogabooga! >;)
Seriously though, this is really somethin'. Coming out as trans is a real mother when you're a boring old computer nerd, but being someone in the public eye--and the Happy Testosterone Land of professional sports, yet--that takes some serious overii, y'all. More power to'er.
Actually, it's not too much of a surprise. A lot of us--particularly the generation that didn't grow up with the intarweb and community support structures now in place--did tend to overcompensate on the look-how-manly-I-am* scale. I've known former ultimate fighters, firefighters, mechanics, motocross racers, hot rod restorifiers--it's like a damn cigarette ad. And don't even *ask* about the number of former soldiers. My utterly unscientific poll put about between one-half and one-third of the trans-folk I know as veterans. M'self included.
As for the people insisting that one's gender is fixed at birth between your legs/in your DNA, well, congrabulations. You are now on an intellectual par with the state of Kansas (which has established a legal precedent to that effect). Mazel tov. Fact is, if you wanna talk about fixed genders, you spent the first six-twelve weeks of your existence as a girl. Happens to everyone. Around eightish weeks in, you may get a note to your body and your brain both that says "OK, go be a dude." Unfortunately, sometimes one or the other of them gets the note but the other one doesn't, leaving to mass confusion & a lifelong harsh. It's interesting to note that in the case of M2F's such as myself, a study in the Netherlands found that we had physically female brain structures, particularly around in the hypothalamus. This was regardless of whether we'd been on the 'mones or not, btw.
Anyhoo, more power to 'er. I know what it's like to come out in hostile territory, but you do kinda get to a point where you just gotta either deal with it, or give yourself a nice set of ulcers and twitch-itis as you try to hold it all in for twenty years and then ya pop.
Oh. And y'all who are talkin' about her "Cutting her dick off"? Yeah, that's not how it goes. It's much, much worse. So be good, or Auntie Kelly will go into *excrutiating* detail. And I'll do it, too, kids: I gots the slide projector and the 3-D glasses right here. Don' push me on this.
K
(* *grunt* *grunt* *scratch*)- miyakohouou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any link to the studies on the brain structures on pre-HRT transe people? The last studies that I have read exclusively looked at the structures of people who had spent a significant amount of time on hormones.
- sherwinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do you have to write like a moron?
- kiyyik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, miyakohouou, this is the most comprehensive link I've found to the current survey of the whole question:
http://www.hemingways.org/GIDinfo/research.htm
The research I was referring to was the 1995 'Nature' study that came out of Holland, this guy:
http://www.symposion.com/ijt/ijtc0106.htm
Apparently their data set was small, but included people who had dosed-up on 'mones right to the end, as well as people who had gone off the stuff for over a year prior to death, showed the same significant change (BST* approx. half the size of an average male one, in keeping with the standard size of female ones), and a self-identified male with an adrenal tumor that gave him high estrogen levels whether he wanted them or not had the normal male-sized BST. Also, further studies (see the top link) suggest that the BST size is fixed in utero by present androgen levels. So apparently that, plus the sheer difference in size, means that apparently they are pretty confident that post-natal hormone regimens are not a factor per se.
(* BST=bed nucleus, stria terminalis. Part of the hypothalamus and an important player in determining sexual behavior)
(As I side note, sexuality did not seem to have an impact on BST size; a gay man would have the same size as a straight man, for example.)
Anyway, the link above goes way the hell more into it than I could in a post like this. It's fascinating reading, though. I've taken to disagreeing with the DSM IV which categorizes GID as a psychological disorder; to my understanding it's more of a birth defect with psychological symptoms, among others.
Anyway, hope this answers your question.
Sherwinn, sorry about that. I get in a certain mood and tend to descend into dialect. Blame the hormones.
K
- mattmoto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Uh, good for him... I guess.
While I think that decision is disgusting (Your not REALLY a woman, you've just chopped your genitals off, screwed around with your body, and put massive amounts of hormones into yourself) it is his decision to make, not mine. I wish him luck, and I hope it doesn't interfere with his sports writing career. - xmuzik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1his happens alot more frequently that what most people want to admit to, & if I recall correctly it was either Plato or Socrates that wrote about an ancient civilization of people that were born with both male and female genitalia

- CMOSLogic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Transgendering is like any other disorder: the fact that it ***** up your life, taking up all your time, and is a genetic disorder striking one in several hundred doesn't make it glorious.
Any genetic trait which doesn't lead to fast thinking, deep thinking, a steady and sober frame of mind, and a body that can throw off loads of infections, and function at a high rate, and for extended times, is nothing more than a disorder.
Everybody has them, because there's never been enough science to know what makes for good breeding.
You can take a chihuahua and have it bred into an enormous animal capable of dropping a bul elk in a series of generations: it's known to be a fact of nothing more than chemistry and there's no 'magic' to being an anomaly.
Breeding always has been a science: mankind just hasn't chosen to be cognizant of it.
There are a lot of people out there who live VERY VERY horrible lives due to being one of those 'one in 66' or '1 in 1,000' and i personally don't think the queen knows wtf it's doing by promulgating trans-gendering as a worthwhile answer to much. Maybe for himself, but not for society and not for many individuals who won't have the money to ever get anywhere with transgender therapy.
A society wherein it's understood, that if you breed this > to that - - and you come out with 'the other' is needed, and needed desperately. Of course to the same effete insane people who practice transgender parades also claim that eugenics of itself is an awful thing.
pfft. I've seen more than one person die from awful, AWFUL genetic disorder. and believe the ***** OUTTA ME, when i tell you, that *****'s disorder isn't jack diddly squat compared to the REAL bad boys of genetics.
If he's born transgendered big ***** deal; and screw him and his big announcement: not because he didn't need to make it: but because it doesn't change anything but his life. That's it. Big ***** deal even a dog will get out of the rain and that's what this guy's flame is: one dog, getting in out of the rain.
Finally it's neat to note that in U.S. society, sexuality has become something that goes along with the rest of existence: but the fact is, it'll take OVER one's existence and wipe out your life - with a disease so bad you can barely dream: a type of Herpes, Herpes 4, is the #1 or #2 killer in the HIV syndrome known as AIDS.
Your sexuality is MUCH more important than having a good time, or even feeling good about yourself due to it. When you start to be a whoring slut, you're done - not to insist this guy is, i seriously DOUBT he is.
Then there are those nagging personal issues that exist whether the rest of society does or not, which come from living as a slut. Over and over and over, thinking since sex feels so good you don't have to watch it's effects, get's rubbed into a society's face which denies - or to be more kind, just loses sight of that fact.
Molestings and rapes, using people for cum-catchers then leaving them to whatever swells up in a society like the cancers of AIDS. Value on people who aren't the classic 'beautiful people' dwindles off to nothing, creating ANOTHER class of people whose psychology isn't all that super.
Societies that can master acting very straight get magic effects: you don't know how to measure it: but something appears. That magic effect is called integrity; which comes from something called self-respect, and self respect is integral to having a sense of self worth: that one is inviolate, and therefore feels strong in resisting ***** barked by idiots with 14 and 16 grades of formal education, but no long-term wisdom about what happens to societies.
In case all you "stop being so straight'' queenies are wondering wtf i'm going to say to justify any of the above, here is how it works: and this, is a PERFECT example in CRYSTAL clarity: it is THE EXACT meme i'm speaking of: a society which believes if it continually asks for LESS scientific behavior it'll get MORE:
and sexual straightness in a society is the ULTIMATE scientific behavior because it produces exactly, THIS:
40s: the Greatest Generation. Sexually straight they produced the best numbers socially ever seen. Anywhere. Across the board with few exceptions.
60s: FREE LOVE generation: social numbers begin to plummet. Everybody's getting high or learning to ***** and masturbate with others. Government runs amok while people learn, not to govern: but to simply pretend governance of the self isn't important; "we've hired a guy to run the country, let's *****".
Gives birth to? the AIDS GENERATION. the previous generation of idiots and themselves both denying anything profound in one's sexual expression as a CULTURAL MEME die off at the rate of 25 *M*I*L*L*I*O*N*. the most educated society in the world, SET OFF A FLASH FIRE of ....VENEREAL DISEASE? How is that POSSIBLE?
oNE answer ONLY can justify it: they were WRONG. Bad ***** wrong. 34 million now live in the time bomb known as HIV. one mistake or none at all, you can be dead in 8 months. 20 years later, -AIDS HAS NOT BEEN CURED and HIV was discovered to be a lentivirus: a RETROvirus that will mutate on you before you get back from ***** lunch. Ooops, sexual freedom fighters ***** up? or just a fantastically bad stroke of luck?
Any apologies yet from the SLUTTING WHORE COALITIONS for the 25 MILLION DEAD SO FAR and the 34 SICK RIGHT NOW? no? pfft what a buncha *****.
Now, you have a generation of 'sexually more liberated' whores, bisexuals and sluts of various stripe: directionless, wondering what a philosophy is, stopping to ***** their neighbor's wife, or husband, jacking off while their entire culture runs along on autopilot: driven not by principles, or philosophies of a third of a million great thinkers, or even DECENT thinkers: but by an industrial military complex which simply rations how much of their own money they can keep.
while the very same effete and sexually ambiguous 'wise men' in the left-wing intelligentsia keep claiming more sexual satisfaction gives greater philosophical power.
These are the same tepid ***** who won't endorse even raising a hand- much less a gun -against the mass murderers who occasionally seek out places where they figure there's lots of unarmed people.
It's not necessarily about the students: but not even 16 and 20 grade levels of education make one teacher qualified to save the lives of the children he/she is entrusted with.. hmm.. Another disastrous social decision: everybody be disarmed and really effete: the bad people will be held magically away by our incredible lightness of being.
the ''I HID UNDER MY DESK'' generation; tattooed and pierced whores and sluts, bisexual and homosexual, all hiding under desks while they claim to study at the highest levels of philosophical and ENGINEERING comprehension: HOW SYSTEMS WORK. But reduce themselves to the point where in their estimation there should be no account for self defence against madmen. We'll pretend there aren't any bad people the way we pretend there aren't any bad sexual diseases that ruin the fun & games.
Nations of sexually free people include :
American Indians. See any around?
Canadian Indians: See any of them?
Inuit: endangered culture?
South American Indians: How long did it take the Spaniards to flip their culture on it's back with swords and determination and nothing more?
African Aborigones: can you say Rhodesia, South Africa? Can you say AIDS on the AFrican Continent?
What if white people wanted to simply wipe black folk out and take Africa and put in a tourist center. Easy killin.
Australian Aborigones: no sexuality structures enforced/encouraged/discouraged. whatever you wanna do, do it. Well, the more disciplined white people who were more careful about whom they'd breed with, did what they wanted to do: wiped em out.
GONE. ALL, GONE. Sexually free societies are as easy to blast apart as a styroroam cooler.
Sexual mores have RARELY accompanied a people in any kind of sociological uplifting: more problems getting solved than forming.
Sexual freedom is THE MARK of a society to look for in judging if it will be able to dominate another, or if it will be plagued by ALWAYS larger numbers in things like *destructive VENEREAL outbreaks: "oh, don't be so square, you say?"
Check the 25 million dead and 34 waiting in the stairwells right this moment. Don't say ''that's not what happens", bitch. Its what YOUR SEXUAL FREEDOM FETISHING brought. Oh yea don't believe it didn't get those who actually PREACH sexual freedom a LOT harder worldwide. They're always the FIRST to go in venereal outbreaks.
*corruptability and trustworthiness issues from top to bottom: between lovers in tiny hamlets all the way to nation traitoring whores, sex can be used to sway ANYbody, if just HAVING sex for no other reason than 'we felt like it' is considered proper and 'enough'. WHORES seduce MORE HONEST PEOPLE at times JUST TO GET THEIR WAY. That's a fact.
On and on you SEXUAL FREEDOM whores preach about how no values must be good values, because you don't want them, and you're bold; -but you're also ***** stupid. As is exhibited by your entire spectrum of SEX AS HOBBY society's dismal, social numbers.
People who understand what the ***** is up in a society don't need a ***** bible to tell YOU: you're ***** idiots without the slightest comprehension of the value of sexual straightness in a society.
YOu won't listen -you barking mad ***** dog? Keep barking. I'll be back when you're dead from aids.
While your'e barking at ME for being an ass, your SEXUAL PARTNER is laughing at you and PLAYING YOU OFF to ANOTHER WHORE without any ***** morals.
Enjoy the rest of your dismal and miserable, philosophically hollow rebellion, bitches. It's about ALL you're gonna have because nobody respects a ***** slut; so you aren't gonna know real respect.
Or real wisdom as you claim - -ONE thing causes ANOTHER - -and are WRONG: Time, after time, after time, after time.
Pfft. Queen gets penis split and folded back into a mess called a fake vagina, takes massive hormone doses, and primps like a ***** canary.
Big deal. Nobody cares.
And your 'gender issues' typically comprise one TINY fraction of genetic disorders. Get over yourselves.- KingChango, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you must have a lot of time on your hands.
- KalvinCoolEdge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Come on man, you're obviously intelligent, you don't have to pepper your diatribe with insults. Try taking a deep breath and calming down before posting, this shouldn't make you so angry.
I agree that this man/woman has some kind of disorder, but she shouldn't be put down for it. The fact is she has found a way to cope, and we should all be happy for her. - SNAFUDAY, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Hmm, I remember somebody else preaching about breeding, purity of bloodlines, and the destruction of inferior bloodlines. Wasnt his name Hister or Hitler or something like that? He was a rather integral part of the 30's and 40's too. The funny thing is all those cultures you mentioned were not destroyed untill they had contact with the "Proper" western civilization. You see, they were "weaker" then the europians that decimated them not because of breeding but because they didnt spend centuries immersed in nothing but disease, famine, and constant brutal warfare. They were already at the level of most americans today, they did not preach distruction of those different then them and they struggled to keep their homes and enviroments in a state of balance. And as we did to all those cultures 500 years ago, a new group who feels they have to help the heathens return to proper values, struggles to kill us en masse. This cycle of attempts to return to whats "proper" is a misguided and cynical view of the world. Your basic argument shows the underlying flaw in your argument, genetic disorders do not appear in a single lifespan of a species. They can show up in large numbers during certian generations and not others but the flaws themselves take many many many many generations to propigate through the species in such a way that they would be something common enough for anybody to take notice of. Free sex did not cause the ratio of gentic disorders to go up, it caused the number of babies to go up. There is still the same percentage chance of somebody being born with autism or tay sachs as there was 100 years ago, the difference is the worlds population has quadrupled, thats all. Oh and the only reason the 40's were so "straight" is that the social stigma that arose from any deviations from the social norms prevented anybody from talking about their desires, actions, or retarded children.

Tim seemed more perplexed than most as I nervously launched into my story.
Finally, he had to explain, "I thought you said 'Trainspotting.' I thought you were going to tell me you're a heroin addict."
