- apathy9, on 08/08/2008, -3/+742...Before coming to the Olympics, Moussambani had never seen a 50 m (160 ft) long Olympic-size swimming pool. He took up swimming only 8 months before the Olympics and had practiced in a 20 m (66 ft) pool at a hotel in Malabo....
- jasonliman, on 08/09/2008, -4/+423Sport is all about not giving up.
- phlamingtoad, on 08/09/2008, -3/+402The fact that 95% of us are probably afraid to speak in public because of fear of looking stupid, and this guy went in knowing that he was going to look terrible. He still went through with it; bigger man than I.
- briansearles, on 08/09/2008, -7/+396He kicked the ***** out of the other two guys.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 08/09/2008, -1/+354Since then he's improved considerably. His current best is about 10 seconds behind the world record.
- icyfire111, on 08/09/2008, -28/+336those commentators were a bunch of douchebags. Seriously, the guy comes from a place with literally nothing and instead of supporting him or at least shutting up they think it's very clever to make fun of him. I think it was commendable of the guy to at least try.
- noahgelman, on 08/09/2008, -9/+272I was cheering and shouting for him near the end hoping he would break the New Guinea record. That was awesome
- knightblade2oo4, on 08/09/2008, -0/+246http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Moussambani
the story is a lot more incredible than you'd think. - Taiyaki, on 08/08/2008, -11/+242You're my boy, Eric Moussambani, my boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- spencenaz, on 08/09/2008, -5/+231Hey, at least we can feel reasonably confident that he wasn't doping.
- Hockey13, on 08/09/2008, -17/+225Yeh, the way this story is presented in the video is pretty pathetic. This was one of the most inspiring moments I've ever seen in an Olympic competition. The commentators were idiots.
- poorlilmonkey, on 08/09/2008, -1/+190At least he had enough balls to enter the Olympics with professional swimmers without ever seeing a pool that big
- Kinneas12, on 08/09/2008, -22/+193Terrible taste, them laughing and making jokes like that. That's a wonderful thing to see; the human spirit.
- angie1234p, on 08/08/2008, -19/+182You almost feel sorry for them....to train that hard and lose it over something silly like that
- Mzungu, on 08/09/2008, -27/+188those commentators are *****
- MikeyMoose, on 01/30/2009, -12/+138Moussambani shows the true spirit of sport. The announcers are *****.
- Kale27, on 08/09/2008, -1/+109He was in the Olympics. I was not.
Him > Me. - NRay7882, on 08/09/2008, -1/+108The girls laughing are annoying.
- T440, on 08/09/2008, -11/+111Although I laughed, he still did a lot better than I could do.
- domomike, on 08/09/2008, -27/+126I didn't think it was funny... "Hey guys! Lets make fun of the guy from the horrendously poor country!"
Just the fact that he swam at that time shows how terribly underprivileged his country is. That's not something to laugh at. He's brave to do what he did.
As a matter of fact, I bet ton of Digg users were made fun of during middle school or high school PE. Many people in New Guinea don't even have a middle school or high school to attend at all! - domomike, on 08/09/2008, -6/+100The guy learned how to swim in a hotel swimming pool... The only pool he had any access to in his very poor country. Those commentators are truly ignorant idiots.
- robopuppy, on 08/09/2008, -17/+99Watch this with the sound off because you'll probably enjoy it a lot more
- domomike, on 08/09/2008, -3/+81Why did someone digg you down? I agree.
Probably 80% of us were made fun of or picked last in PE and we hated it. Can you imagine growing up in a terribly poor country, learning how to swim in a hotel swimming pool, entering the olympics to represent your underprivileged country, and then being made fun of by millions of people around the world? Give me a break. - overt, on 08/09/2008, -11/+89And everyone thinks Americans are arrogant. We, Australians, are the arrogant ones. But we seem to get away with it.
- Battletoadz, on 08/09/2008, -8/+73As a swimmer throughout all of high school, i've seen my share of people who get done 1-2 min after all the other racers have finished. I don't particularly see whats so LOL'ish about this clip. All i see is some guy trying his hardest to beat a record time for his country, even though he probably knew he was going to get creamed by the other swimmers in the same heat. Thats inspirational.
- ZeeZee2k, on 08/09/2008, -1/+62He's a winner in my book
- Jforsyth89, on 08/09/2008, -2/+60You know it was just one guy who ***** up at the start...and then the guy next to him panicked and thought that he had missed the start.
- DteK, on 08/09/2008, -4/+57that guy has broken more official records than I have. that was sweet.
- samorado, on 08/09/2008, -7/+56agreed, especially since he cut his time in half by the time the 2004 olympics rolled around...shame these commentators had to bash on him, i'd like to see them jump in and try to make it 10m w/out having heart palpatations
- quomen, on 08/09/2008, -0/+48Agreed man. His time might have been slow, but he carried himself like a champ. Mad respect for being able to do that in front of an audience of millions.
- mgyqmb, on 08/09/2008, -3/+49A quick hint to you geographically challenged diggers -
Equatorial Guinea is on the west coast of Africa. Papua New Guinea is located north of Australia. They are not related. - inactive, on 08/09/2008, -8/+51Exactly. Screw these announcers and ***** the kid that posted this with LOL for his petty diggs. Most people are afraid to try and this guy did.
When I ran cross country a really fat kid would compete. At the beginning of the season everyone would laugh(myself included) when he came 5 minutes after the last finisher. But by the end of the season when we realized this kid wouldn't give up and kept getting better he had fans from every school rooting him to the finish line. I realized and learned something from him, and it was that nature might define a big part of our abilities but potential doesn't mean jack because most people won't try.
Perseverance is one hell of a quality - oSallyo, on 08/09/2008, -9/+52Eric the eel was the was one of the most memorable moments of the Sydney Olympics. The crowd cheered for him the whole way.
Roy and HG (commentating in the clip) and their show The Dream was the other memorable moment. They were a nightly comedy show during the olympics about the olympics.
People's comments about them in this thread are way off the mark. They were very funny, loved by the Australian public and by the, with Olympians, with many of them wanting to be on the show.
Every night of the Sydney Olympics I stayed up to 3 in the morning to watch them (even though I had to go to work the next morning), they were hilarious.
Check out their commentary of the gymnastics in Sydney 2000.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dream_with_Roy_an ... - se1zure, on 08/09/2008, -1/+43"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."
- The Olympic creed. - quomen, on 08/09/2008, -10/+50I agree. I want to throw the announcers in the swimming pool and watch them swim. Being chased by sharks. Sharks with frickin' laser beams on their head.
- uselessaccount2, on 08/09/2008, -14/+54I`ll probably get dugg down for my comment, but ***** everyone who laughed at that guy. He did his best and showed true spirit out there. Absolutely nothing funny about this. And ***** those announcers.
- homah, on 08/09/2008, -15/+54I can't believe this isn't fake.
- inactive, on 08/09/2008, -14/+52I did not find anything particularly funny about this video, so the laughters and rude commentators confused me.
You people mocking him think you could swim 100m at all, let alone doing it in record times? - drethedog, on 08/09/2008, -4/+41Respect.... He's a better man than most of us....
- Obsession88, on 08/09/2008, -1/+32Wouldn't giving up while swimming be called drowning?
- Murdats, on 08/09/2008, -4/+34this was a comedy show created at the time of the Olympics, why would they be serious when they are hosting a comedy show.
and it is pretty funny still, mainly because he was the only one swimming. - barnsaton, on 08/09/2008, -7/+37I feel bad for the two guys who were disqualified. You can hear the audience and the announcers laughing at them throughout the whole video.
- Dagarik, on 08/09/2008, -0/+26They wern't the real announcers, they were from an Aussie after hours olympic show where the hosts just made fun of everything olympic related. I used to watch it every night.
- ToadLeg, on 08/09/2008, -8/+34Oh, come on, this was funny. They were talking about how funny it was, and weren't just mocking Eric Moussambani. For example:
"Look at this tumble-turn as he gets into it - Yes! - A little bit slow, but he's got the right idea - he's got the mechanics of it down Roy"
And what did they say about the others when they disqualified themselves:
"Did you hear the 'get set' there Roy? I don't think I heard anything"
Equatorial Guinea is just new to the Olympics; they're not babies. - katyslp, on 08/09/2008, -7/+32Equatorial Guinea...just sayin'.
- CrazyChair, on 08/09/2008, -20/+45Jesus Christ. It was a sports comedy talk show presented by two comedians who created characters that parody sport commentators.
Why take it so seriously? This reminds me of people who get all bent out of shape by stuff Jeremy Clarkson says. - inactive, on 08/09/2008, -16/+40Or practicing.
- chrisbosh123, on 08/09/2008, -7/+31I don't get it.. he showed spirit and heart and thats all that matters. Imagine someone trying to compete for figure skating while living in Las Vagas all his/her life, you'd have to go miles just to get to an ice rank and still have the courage to try and qualify. Kudos to him and his courage.
- LordoftheLoo, on 08/09/2008, -2/+24Well Mike, the thing is some people (or in this case countries) don't have the proper means of training their athletes. It's not like he came from America, or the UK, or any well off country, he came from a place where the only way he could train was in a place far from suitable for the olympics. Its not a story of some jerkoff showing up to the olympics without training, its about a guy who despite no actual training for the 100m, decides to put it all on the line for his country.
- ulmedas, on 08/09/2008, -2/+23Why feel sorry for them? Part of their training is getting a good jump without disqualifying yourself.
