Unfortunately Florida has had a really crappy summer (light wind), and a few people apparently couldn't help themselves with the winds coming up with the storm, and then this happened. It was obviously a massively bad call on his part, and, if he survives he may deserve the idiot jokes. But bear in mind that he's in critical condition, close to death, so perhaps the blooper video with circus sound affect thing can wait until he's pulled through. Just saying, don't be a dick.

- final_sound, on 08/20/2008, -0/+15ya you have quick releases, but when things go that bad it happens way to quick to do anything. after he got drilled into the sand the first time he was either way to shaken up or knocked out to react and pull the release. he a) shouldn't have been out in those conditions, and b) should have had his hand on the release as he was coming in to land the kite. you're usually really reluctant to pull both of your releases because you don't want to lose/destroy your $1500 kite, and more importantly clothesline everyone(hurting a kid would be my worst nightmare) on the beach downwind of you, but in those conditions you've got to be ready to cut it loose.

I must have driven by just before this happened. I was driving North on A1A on Fort Lauderdale Beach yesterday afternoon just about where you can first see the ocean from the road. The same place where all those Hobie Cats are usually parked on the sand. There were 3 kite surfers out there then. They were going in all kinds of directions. I believe every time there is a tropical storm here there are always people getting injured on the beach. I hate to wish ill will on people, but if someone does something this stupid, and then they end up seriously hurting or killing themselves, well that's what happens when stupid people do stupid things. What pisses me off, tho, is when ***** like this guy end up taking other people with them. That's why I have a rule. If I see someone doing something at this level of stupid, I get the hell out of there. In my book, the people on the beach dodged a bullet by being stupid enough to have been in striking distance, but lucky enough for him not to have killed them.
Example: Fourth of july several years ago. Dude decided it would be a good idea to start putting the firecrackers inside whatever trash objects were lying around. I left as soon as they started getting that stupid (drunk). The next day I heard it took them several hours to pick all the glass out of that dude's face. It is quite possible for experienced kite surfers to go out in 40 mph+ winds but if you end up on land you are doing it wrong. It there is lighting or hail out, it is a different matter obviously.
EDIT: upon watching the video again, is he really even kite surfing? Nowhere in the cnn video do I see a board. He might just be using a large para kite and getting picked up because there is so much wind. - SquigglyP, on 08/20/2008, -0/+4I hope english is not your native language.
