- rey1867, on 10/10/2007, -3/+49how many other people never expected cricket news to be on digg ?
- bluechips23, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24And my mom asked me to stop playing cricket and study hard to get a "proper job" with may be $50k only per year. Hmmm.
- TheSexyGeek, on 10/14/2007, -5/+28"NO ONE! And I mean NO ONE Anywhere in the whole world gives a CRAP, GET IT INTO your thick head, only the stupid morons ruled by the scum British know what the hell cricket is.
Now if you want to see some real sports: Watch Soccer, Baseball, Football, ICE Hockey."
You're an ass. Cricket is a popular sport in most countries OUTSIDE the US. But like many, you seem to think that America is THE WORLD(tm). By the way, Soccer is called Football everywhere but America because. . . well. . .they use their feet. Why do you call American Football 'football'? Kicking is a relatively minor aspect of the sport. - bluechips23, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22A sport that is actually better and more interesting than baseball.
- harisha, on 10/10/2007, -0/+19It was intresting to see a Cricket news getting on Digg Home page...
- fatherus, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20I bet all this is just coz they beat Pakistan in a final... :)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Apparently Cricket is the second most watched sport in the world behind Football/Soccer.
- mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15I think cricket has the biggest audience solely because India and Pakistan are cricket-crazy. That's over 1.5 billion. Add Australia, South Africa, England and lots of other nations. No one gives a ***** about ice hockey.
- Sajentine, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15The finale was a great match and the India boys really put everything into it.
- Rethcir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12I'm probably the only white american who likes cricket. But I do like it quite a bit. I wish the US could get a competent team together, or at least show the world cup on espn2 or something.
- MisterSam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Well lets consider the countries where Cricket is popular: UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Scotland, Ireland, The West Indies, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Netherlands, Nepal, Argentina, Namibia, Uganda, Zaire,
Now, where is baseball popular.....erm the USA.. Japan, Korea, Taiwan.. + some countries in South America
New York Times - Cricket is the worlds second most popular sport, after soccer (which the United Kingdom also invented) http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9E0 ... - JackLow, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11This came into my email earlier in the day
Q: Why did misbah ul haq hit the final ball into the area he did?
A: He thought there was no fielder there.
Little did he realise that in every corner of the world, there is an Indian already there!!! - navster15, on 10/10/2007, -0/+766 Diggs (so far) says you're wrong...
- akf2000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Fascinating article, they're minted, thanks for submitting *from otherwise disgruntled Pakistani*
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8No, theres two of us
- mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6http://www.*****.com
- mizraabianz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yea good to see cricket on digg, although I am Pakistani and we lost in the final, I must say it was best world cup after many years. India Vs Pakistan is always a great game. Congrats to Indians.
- nakp88d, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7And beating Australia in the semis!
- dealsdealer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5not just you ....
all mother's did the same ...
hence , we ended up digging stories ... - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You do know that the worlds richest team is not from F1, baseball, football, hockey but cricket. Team India is the worlds richest sports team with a revenue in excess of $500 million.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5and south africa before that and before that it was england and before that it was Pakistan.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9american football is just rugby for girls
- c2kris, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Like any other Indian, I'm also thrilled by the win.
But the sad part is that only Cricket players get this much attention/respect. No other sports players get this kind of Prize money. Sania Mirza is an exception, but I guess being a good looking female is one of the reasons for her fame and endorsements.
Hope this would change in future. - Sabretou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4*****. Indians write 'very important person' perfectly fine. VVIP stands for Very, Very Important Person.
Proof: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_Important_Person - gerran, on 10/10/2007, -1/+51 lakh is about $2550 US. So:
"7) Sahara India has announced to give flats (worth Rs 25 Lakhs) to each cricketer"
25 * 2550 = $63,750. Each player gets a house/condo worth $63,750. - hiPpymIck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4i like this one..
9) Air India and Indian Airlines announced out-of-turn promotion for some cricketers including Dhoni, Uthappa, Gambhir and Harbhajan Singh. They will also get a steep hike in their salary.
win a World Cup - get a promotion at work
could someone explain the Crores and Lakhs..is it millions and thousands
(i dont think Indians use commas to separate thousands in written nos.
like Westerners do.. so im not sure) - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4sania is not an exception. India has been a pro tennis nation for quite a while now. Leander and Mahesh Bhupati have had their share of fame too because of tennis. Hock is ***** boring and we just suck too much at football.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Come on, don't you think you are going a little overboard? They didn't will the real world cup just a minor one.
- edithsan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The picture is amazing!
- jeffgrado, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Is this on par with ODI winnings?
- mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I personally think it's great you made and ass of yourself a second time.
- DevlinD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Considering they were a complete mess at the real world cup, this is unbelievable!!! Actually both India and Pakistan did horribly at the world cup.
Congratulations to India!! I know they were having a rough go of it for a little while and in a country where cricket is as INSANELY popular as it is in India it sure does a lot to spike national pride. I had the opportunity in Mumbai to be walking around Connaught (sp?) and there was an Indian cricket player in the Adidas store. Needless to say the streets were jammed (the actual store was locked with the player inside) and everyone was going crazy. Even when the cricket player came out there were the police with their crazy ass whipping sticks (the looked painful but as they swung them all the Indians just ran away laughing, then almost immediately returning to the same spot they had vacated) making a path for him.
I say this in almost every post that involves India but I will say it again. Damn I love that country!! - trenchfever, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Seriously, if you guys had a proper team, you'd beat the ***** out of the rest of the world. Why do I think so? It's well known that south asian cricket is more about politics than the game. Plus if cricket gets more internationalized, I think the odds of match fixing would go down. Match fixing is a serious problem in cricket.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6seems like digg is field with them too. :p. shout out to my desi hommies. vande mataram.
- nakp88d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Your clueless about Indian cricket aren't you?
- blogger55, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And Z+ Security Cover is the highest security given to any person. Only a few people in India receive that. It's not typo error. Refer to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Security_categories_i ...
- Sabretou, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Hi, did you know that Digg has a threaded reply system? Digg's comment system isn't even that bad.
- mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21 Lakh = 100 thousand
1 Crore = 10 million
We do use commas, first one after 3 digits (thousands), and then every 2 digits (100 multiples).
So it goes:
1,000 = thousand
1,00,000 = lakh
1,00,00,000 = crore
and continuing on to arab, shankh, maha-shankh etc. which are seldom used. - algorhythmix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2crores = 10 million, lakh = 1/10 million
- jasg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2when will US start participating in intl sports ?
US cricket team is really Bad..every one in US is narrow minded when it comes to cricket!
if one wants to compete and win then they should start playing intl cricket.
NFL, baseball is played within US..no intl Matches at all : ( !! - perilousone, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Very interesting! I'll have to give some credit to the Economist (magazine) since until I bought my first copy a few days ago I had never heard of Twenty20. I'd go watch a Twenty20 match if they had one here in the US (iff it were in my town, of course).
- nakp88d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2sadly,you are right.
- digrboi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+210 lakh=1 millon
1 crore=100 lakhs - Deguello, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The one thing they forgot to mention is the immense amount of ASS these players will be getting....Oh yeah Durka Durka Splooge!
- tony4moroney, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2match-fixing was a minor problem that existed in the 90s. ever hear of stories recently?
- Kelmon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sorry, what's "baseball"?
- diggablestory, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1heres more info on the business by another blogger - claimed Joshi - http://optimicician.blogspot.com/2007/09/t20-champ ...
- nakp88d, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thats really an understaement!
http://www.bigstarcricket.com/bs/business/article_ ... - dubbleenerd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1given a conservative estimate that the average annual income for india is around $500 a year (mean), and even with a steep contrast in metropolitan versus rural incomes, average starting salaries in the cities are around $3000 a year - which makes a condo worth $63,750 really valuable. Even more so, since housing costs in Indian cities scale much more with time, and Mumbai (formerly Bombay) for example, has one of the highest real estate prices in the world (thanks to demand/supply).
- trenchfever, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Which by Indian standards is pretty high.
