- wild, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Digg tards? Really?
"Professional" may mean that you get paid, but sure doesn't reflect your maturity. Maybe instead of being so hostile, you could have just said, "hey guys, I work in the field, and that isn't how it works."
Then some of us would have actually cared about your little mini blog. :) - cantaclaro, on 10/12/2007, -14/+37Wow you digg tards don't know ***** about visual effects...
Look at the camera motion. It's uber smooth which leads me (as a visual effects professional) to believe that this was shot with a motion-controlled camera. Regardless of what color the boards were painted you aren't going to get a good key for the simple fact that the board won't be completely green or even the same shade of green in most places (i.e. you the bottom is in shadow and therefore its almost completely black.)
super_spyder is an idiot, shake and combustion cannot do that (I use shake EVERYDAY, and know combustion like the back of my hand), a Flame can do something like it but it would look like crap and swim (jiggle all around) like crazy.
If you look between :54 and :55 you can get a clue as to how they did it. Basically cutting out pieces of the scene and pasting them together to make a clean plate. Then rotoscoping (animating a mask frame by frame with tweening) the feet of the skaters in each shot, and recreating the shadows of the feet that the board would have blocked, if you look at some of those shots you can see that the feet shadows don't exactly match color-wise.
Regardless its an awesome video and probably took a team of guys a while to do, even with that one very obvious mistake its perfectly executed.
Please learn something about subjects that you try and discuss instead of wasting everyone's time with your *****. - Evoguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20"Yeah Right" refers to the name of the skate vid guys, it's an older Girl Skateboards video, one of the best. Song is Murderers by John Frusciante, awesome. I'm a little curious as to how they got the background plates to the boards in (i.e after they were chromakeyed out).. I doubt they actually had match-moved camera background shots setup for this, so maybe it was a frame-by-frame thing?
Actually now that I watch it again, all of the shots are from stationary cameras, that's pretty rare for a skate video.. so maybe it really was a motion-controlled rig. Pretty cool. - Arkitan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24@Cantaclaro
Yes because I don't know everything there is to know about video editing I'm a tard. You're an idiot, why don't you explain something without talking down to people next time you prick. - TheVetos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Rock on Yeah Right
- super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11a program like combustion, or shake can intelligently remove and replace the keyed object using the surrounding environment
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wish they would've just painted the trucks and wheels green.. then they could have HOVERBOARDS!
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The thing is, even if their boards are painted green that doesn't just let the camera "see through" them. You can do it one of two ways ....
1) If you can make your camera follow the exact same motion path twice, you record it once without the person (or object obstructing the ground) then again with the person on their skateboard. Overlay the two, removing the skateboard using green as the color-key ... leaving the ground underneath.
2) You record the person on their green skateboard, then do a lot of post-production cleaning up the gaps where the green appears on your footage. Computers can do some of the work one you start filling things in ... but there's still a lot of manual labor involved. - ohnnyj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Very cool. They should make a follow up with Back to the Future 2-esque hoverboards (leave the board visible but erase the trucks and wheels).
- calabria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6this would make an awesome shoe commercial
- t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4yeah, this definitely wasn't an easy effect to achieve. they probably only used the green pulled from the boards as a basic matte, and went back in and rotoscoped more thoroughly. not to mention recreating the shadows that would have appeared underneath the board. remember: green screening doesn't automatically fill in the gap left when the green is removed. you have to replace it manually.
- istrikelast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6this is an old Spike Jonze skate video
- bloqmon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I used to live there, for the past 4 years actually and I skated there without trouble. Enough with this sorrow for Israel *****.
- matt0ne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Great vid.
One of the things that I always loved about the skateboarding community was the creativity around the presentation of their past-time: the vids, the boards themselves, clothing & even the ramps they built. I love it & am often inspired seeing it. - Sealab2021, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4At the end of the movie they kind of show how they did it, the cameras are on motorized arms. The Skate boards were also paited green.
- digitaldater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How did they get the paint to stay on the wheels? Wouldn't the paint on the rails come off? Must of touched it up in post.
- daboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Cantaclaro is 100% right. If you watch the ending credits of Yeah Right (With the awesome Fatboy Slim song "Long Haired Freaky People") you see the power motion controlled camera in action. The crew is skating on green boards, and on the balcony above them is a mechanical tripod of sorts.
Even back in my Freahman year of high school, with me only just getting into the visual effects feild, I could see how they did it.
It's not too hard if you have enough money.
More info on the ending credits song: The audio sample "long haired freaky people need not apply" comes from the song "Signs" by the five Man electrical band, an old 70's hippie soul group.
i do way too much research behind skate videos when i watch them. I guess it happens when you actually MAKE them, and not argue about this king of things, thinking you're right about stuff you don't use yourself. - green1152, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not exactly one of the best skate videos, but a very innovative one. I like it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4the dust cloud was awesome.
- tomisina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that's a pretty harsh way to say that... but it's funny because the name has underscore 2 appended to it... apparently the prior submit had the same name...
- yourowndisaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh ***** the first part was done at my old highschool right across the street from me..
- tomskag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thsi is by far one of the more influential skate vids out.
i got this one a few years back its directed by the one and only SPKE JONZE!!
truly badass - ydt89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A bicycle might be easier, and still look preety cool. I could see lots of interesting things being done with this method.
- mykoleary, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not just green screen work, there are no skateboards in the shadows eitehr. Can;t make them green...
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I havent seen it before and I think it's great.
- ViktorVaughn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the order might be wrong for that. I think they shoot, recording the camera motion the whole time, wait until they get a good take, clear everyone out, then shoot the backing plate with the recorded motion. If you notice, there are no dolly shots, it's all tilts and pans from tripods, making capturing camera motion that much simpler, in both equipment and execution, and less expensive.
A lot of shots are shot at a low enough angle that you won't see shadows or the light is so flat there are no shadows. The shot where he kicks up the dirt comes to mind.
Still, pretty amazing. There are some great compositions with a lot of elements and a lot going on in the backgrounds. - danglerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1someone's frickin talented with Shake...these kids are young, Hollywood look out!
- Axim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Cantaclaro is obviously a pretty big deal.. nothing like a dude that doesn't fully know what he's talking about acting condescending to randoms. combustion could easily do something like that, you would overlay the footage with the skaters in the scene then run the footage without them in the background, key a mask to the boards that would effectively punch a hole into the layer behind it, leaving the bare pavement where the boards used to be. this would be super difficult if they didn't have motion tracked cameras but as is it's not rocket science here chief
- wookiekiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great song. Frusciante rules.
- oopspoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"5-0, 5-0 shuv, front blunt, front blunt shuv".
As with Gold Fish and Mouse, Yeah Right! Still holds upto the standards of todays skating. the Lakai Video with be just like that except with *giddy like a school girl* Cairo Foster and Rob Welsh in it. - DRTtom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1O YA!!! THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!!!
- JohnnyRad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hah good thing Spike Jonz is now an unknown or known as "some guys". sad day.
the opening credits for this skate video by Girl ("Yeah Right!") are even more awesome, and the video features actor Luke Wilson skating. entertaining and worth a rent. - darkmotion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Old but great :)!
- lozaning, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3anyone have links describing how this is done?
would love to try it out on stuff, ie cars with no wheels - knightblade2oo4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3yep i remember watching this video in zumiez thinking it was the craziest ***** ever.
- LastDays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the John Frusciante tune makes the video.
- wirah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What an original idea! Great stuff !!!
- modarius, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This is the 3rd time I've seen this on digg. Come on, guys.
- ViktorVaughn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They made chroma key green wheels, you can make wheels pretty much any color, right? Green stain on the board, chroma green tape, green paint on the trucks.
The only thing that's kind of a bitch is getting the shadow of the skateboard out. I'm pretty sure that has to be erased frame by frame and by hand. - adigggirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I meant Owen Wilson. My bad.
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Michael J Fox ain't got nothing on that.
- gaijin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5But if I submit a story that's already been on the front page, doesn't that mean MY submission will make it to the front page, too?!?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Now if only they could digitally buckle those baggy pants so we don't have the displeasure to see their butt sticking out.
- adigggirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember watching this on DVD a few years ago. The best skate video ever, imo. The music for this part was actually scored by Jonze's brother to fit the action. You should check out the rest of the DVD. Luke Wilson is in it talking skate smack. Totally worth it.
- jennyluca, on 03/09/2009, -0/+0i Love this Video ! Very nice... Check out these http://www.kids-dynamite.de
- jaymzv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1P-rod is sick.
- digitaldater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1When you do green screen are you able to digitally color your original video green in post and and then overlay your other image, in this case would be the exact same image.
Maybe that is how they took out the shadows.
All you would have to do is digitize the shadows green and you could be sloppy about it too.
Why am I asking here? Someone has to know! - SulFuRus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Right, this is a Spike Jonze's video.
This video is actually made with Rotoscope Technique. -
