- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -8/+88The results were delivered to the review committee via their AOL account. They were disheartened by the announcement: "You've got male!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+24I think he said "ASIAN" not "AVIAN".
- aegis9975, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18If this runner really is a woman, it must be the most offensive possible thing to be accused of being a man and be stripped of the medal you won.
- Chakz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I was gonna say look at that adams apple, but after seeing Ann Coulter...*shudders*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I thought all of these issues had been resolved by the 2002 film "Juwanna Mann".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juwanna_Mann - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18If you have a Y chromosome you're a male according to my definition...I don't know about the rules of the Asian games...
- TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12With a 1280x800 monitor and the new Digg layout it seems like the description simply says "An Indian runner who won a silver medal in the women's 800 meters at the Asian Games failed a gender test and was stripped".... Nobody wants to see some transexual indian porn if they're going to watch a sport.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The dude behind her/him finds this really funny.
- ro0ke, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17I think it's as simple as... that chick is a guy.
- Morsetlis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I think she just has aneuploidy, or chromosomal abnormalities.
- DRTED, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15After this stunning loss, there is a bright side...he was just cast to play the lead role of Mrs. Doubtfire, in "Mrs. Doubtfire 2, Big Trouble in Mumbai"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8so if a guy cuts his plumbing off he's a female?
- Siroro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/6161691.stm Is this a related story?

"That's not the point, you idiot. He was pointing out the fact that X and Y aren't universally the letters used for chromosomes. Certain species have W and Z, etc. So you can't always say that male=Y chromosome."
That's not the point either (idiot, since you seem to think that's the conclusion when one misses the point). He specifically used the word "heterogametic". In humans, there are two kinds of sex chromosomes, and whatever you call them, females have two of the same kind, whereas males have one of each. Thus male gametes (sperm) come in two kinds (heterogametic), whereas female gametes (eggs) come in one kind. In birds, it is the other way around. It has nothing to do with whether you label them X, Y, W or Z. - illyriah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It is most likely an intersex condition; the article said she had too many Y chromosomes, which I took as she had XXY or some variation.

Although it could mean other things too. - discofuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There goes my chance to win an Olympic gold medal. I was planning to tuck my penis in between my legs and pose as a woman. Well there's that and I'm completely out of shape and not particularly good at any sport, but I can still beat a woman, right?
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6IT'S A TRAP!
- kelbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Bender? Is that you?
- bcool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7yeah it looks like someone just said 'penis' or 'vagina' and he just couldn't keep it together.
(hehe vagina...hehe) - efesar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I wonder what this really means? Does it mean that official governing institutions have questions about the "black and white" notion of gender? Is it possible that they are actually legitimizing the idea of a transgendered spectrum in the human species (and by extension, other animals)?
- mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I doubt it's a transsexual; you'd imagine the surgeries would mess with their bodies too much to be athletically competitive, and recovery would play hell with their training. My guess is that it's a case of androgen insensitivity syndrome; there's a medical condition in which suppressed hormones cause a person to look fully female externally while having XY chromosomes (they also are sterile and have internal reproductive system abnormalities.) I feel pretty sorry for them if that's the case; this might well be news to them as well as the testing committee. If so, it'd be a horrible way to find out.
Here's the wiki page on the disorder:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complete_Androgen_Insensitivity_Syndrome - RichesToRags, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media said Sounderajan almost certainly never had sex-change surgery."
I love the quote above from the article. What the hell does "almost certainly" mean??
Sounds to me this person is almost certainly a male. - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Or maybe a hardcore Buddhist.
- TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was just about to switch water companies, what does that make me?
- JasonHofmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's "at a loss FOR words." Ok, I'm better now.
- Jelfish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The title is wrong. It's the *sex* that was questioned, not the gender. Gender is a social construction (masculine versus feminine), while sex is defined by genetics (male, female, etc). Genetically, it turns out that intersexuals (humans whose sex chromosomes are not XX or XY) are actually relatively common. Biologist Anne Fausto-Sterling, who studies sex and intersexuality, concluded that 1.7% of births resulted in an intersexual child, which, if you think about it, is quite high. That's 5.1 million people in the United States. Note that just because you're intersexual doesn't mean you don't look like either a male or female in every-day life. Also, not all intersexuality results in abnormal sexual organs. But with that number, it's not surprising that complications could arise in sex-specific organizations like sports .
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If he does that, he's still got outer plumbing. It's just missing a pipe or two.
- mitrovarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, sometimes it is that hard. If the person you're testing has complete androgen insensitivity, they'll have those boobs and a vagina you test for. They'll also have undescended testes, XY chromosomes, and will lack a uterus.
- TGKnIght, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Notice the nervously smiling guy in the back of the pic? That's his husband :)

Racism much? - nexah3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4At least no one's said, "I'd hit it." yet..
- Moeface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Futurama anyone?
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Doesn't necessarily mean that she is a dude. There are a number of conditions that would make her appear to be a woman in every aspect but DNA. Males have chromosomes XY. Women are XX. Someone could have extra chromosomes (XXY, XXX) and still appear to be a woman. Also, she could actually have male chromosomes (XY) and be immune to testosterone, which would make her appear to be a woman. I am sure there are many other conditions that would do the same thing.
- nepawoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so what's the right word when you don't know whether it's a he or she?
- agentmaxwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Hail, hail, Ribonia, a laaaaand I didn't make up."

Ed Wood first brought us "Glenn or Gelnda"...then ..SNL brought us "Pat"
Now.... **flutes and drums playing** 20th Century Camel presents -> "Shanta or Shanti"
** Lou Reeds' "Take a walk on the wild Side" plays throughout the trailer **
He wanted to be a She...so he could win a race against women...
But another He found that She was a He... and said...** song lyrics sing "take a walk on the wild side" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2show some heart *****..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was a report here that she infact had some problem regarding puberty. For a 25 year old, she had not attained puberty, and her parents were too poor to rectify the condition..
I dont understand why the Asiad committee should pass out such a blatant ruling for this... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How so? It was not intended to be derogatory. The runner has failed to comment. The association is saying that it cannot award the medal to this person because they are not female. It was stated that the runner had no previous sex change operation.
What does that leave me with? Physically, it's still unclear what the natural sex is (hermaphrodite, maybe?). No reason to get upset. - Joeymarshmallow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yep, that's probably it, that's the most common variation of the chromosomes (XXY). She probably didn't know anything about it until now, it's happened to a few runners over the years, it's devastating because they are basically told some 25 years into their life that they're not the gender that they thought.
- Touchdown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2How exactly do they test for this?
- skull24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder what other genetic screening test they do?
- DianeOfTheMoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or, the more likely scenario....she is mostly likely intersexed, and already came with a vagina and such.
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1sad.
- ChillyWilly5280, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HBO documentary on the subject of trans-gender, inter-sex, etc... for those that don't realize that it is not necessarily a clear cut, black & white issue.

- whiffen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Must have been the facial hair that gave s/him away...
- vniow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Standard chromosomal patters don't always apply...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intersexuality#Biological_causes_of_intersexuality - CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No, if he cuts his plumbing off he's just a guy without a penis. Well, that and a complete moron. But more to the point, if you have your penis removed, you would then have to have all of the "plumbing" for a female be put inside you (trying to stick with the analogy here), now wouldn't you?
