- Maynza, on 12/26/2007, -4/+95um what happens when the other guy isnt doing the "dance" and instead throws a round house into his blindfolded ass :/
- inactive, on 12/26/2007, -3/+80Ok cool enough.. but how much was rehearsed?
- xxTazxx, on 12/26/2007, -1/+60Kombotan relies on set movements, like a dance, and therefore the blindfolding is simply a proof that the person has learnt these steps properly. TBH it has little use in a fight, however practising the routine will over time increase the users natural blocking and attacking as it will become second nature. The sticks themselves are quite powerful, but in a modern society not much use since you'll most likely be attacked on the day you don't have the stick.
IMHO, any martial arts (well most) can be useful in a real fight as long as the person is dedicated to the training and the martial art itself is a martial art and not something totally made up, i.e. controlling people with your will. Muay thai for one (which I do) is extremely effective, again only if the person has the determination and balls to sticking through training. - ClaudiuUSA, on 12/26/2007, -6/+62K-K-K-K-KOMBOTAN BREAKER
- everfresh59, on 12/26/2007, -5/+43At least I know not to mess with blind Filipino's next time I'm in Manila.....
- Alexwo1, on 12/26/2007, -4/+42i call Shenanigans. It doesn't look like the student is actually trying to crack him in the face. In most parts it looks like he followsthe teachers moves. I Think if i had to i could connect a stick to his face if he had a blindfold on.
- inactive, on 12/26/2007, -1/+33Presas is a very famous name in Phillipino escrima arts. He was doing what is called heaven pattern and I could do it wearing a blind fold too. Once you get it down it is no big deal. I think its great to do a video but it wasn't all that tough. If you attacked the guy in the video UFC trained or NOT he would in short order kill you. Escrima does not teach submission they use knives, eye gouging and wind pipe strikes. They do NOT allow eye gouging or wind pipe strikes in UFC...and that would be the end of you. Lots of knives...I know I trained in Sacramento California for some time under three different Guro and Grandmasters. Escrima and Serrada are weapon arts...not meant to be empty handed but it all translates to empty hands. UFC is great but the US Navy Seals do not learn UFC fighting they learn ESCRIMA AND SERRADA....how to effectively use a knife.
- fkr3, on 12/26/2007, -15/+44Let's see him practice not-looking in a UFC match...
- wedges, on 12/26/2007, -8/+31can't wait to see a Pinoy character in Tekken
- noots, on 12/26/2007, -5/+27then indy walks up and shoots him with a gun.
- r0b0, on 12/27/2007, -0/+20I can't believe you took the time to write that out, then respond to yourself.
- Brainclone, on 12/26/2007, -3/+18Filipino martial arts students start with escrima sticks, then they graduate to hand to hand combat after learning the footwork and more importantly how the stick bounces away from a block and how to re-direct it back at the opponent. The fighting in the video heavily relies on this knowledge to determine were the next blow will be coming from. It becomes extremely difficult when you are fighting a Filipino that comes from a different school, with different footwork and style.
- vhold, on 12/26/2007, -2/+16It looks especially bad at 0:44, where the guy in the red jacket doesn't even really attempt to kick him, but just kinda lifts his leg and holds it there for a moment waiting for it be grabbed right as the narrator ironically says "the outcomes are unpredictable"
- wrzhydr, on 12/26/2007, -2/+15i doubt i could do that without the blindfold..two moves in and i'll be on the floor, crying for mom.
- mortigon, on 12/26/2007, -0/+13Why in the world are you wasting your and everyone elses time with these idiotic posts? You're even creating new user ids so you can type more idiotic posts. Go find something to do, you aren't funny.
- Myztry, on 12/27/2007, -0/+13"Patty cake patty cake, baker’s man" with attitude!
- jonmlm, on 12/26/2007, -2/+15awesome. keep it that way. let's hope it doesn't get over exposed and ruined like muay thai.
- jamesmorad, on 12/26/2007, -9/+22mmbaho ma pek pek mo
- Hoxie, on 12/26/2007, -1/+13hell, i bet most digg users would be on the floor without the blindfold.
- sat0shi, on 12/26/2007, -6/+18All of it.
- KoZo, on 12/26/2007, -2/+13Im a Filipino, and I never heard of Kombotan.
- jonmlm, on 12/26/2007, -3/+13seriously, i'd love to see him break some collar bones with his escrima sticks.
- Omis, on 12/27/2007, -0/+9No way, I might get shot.
- ataylor32, on 12/27/2007, -1/+10Pinoy = male
Pinay = female - sdcarter, on 12/26/2007, -1/+9ha, you said titi
- jordan314, on 12/26/2007, -3/+11It's just a pattern
- catalysis, on 12/27/2007, -1/+9I don't get why everyone thinks that UFC is the ultimate test of combat styles. It has rules which dictate the fighting style. If the fighting were real or to the death, the matches would be completely different. It is just a sport that people train for and it's a totally different goal from most martial arts.
- bogomill, on 12/27/2007, -7/+14UFC is a sport. Escrima and Serrada is real, life-or-death, kill-or-be-killed combat with knives, sticks, and other weapons. Bas Rutten aside, I would love to see your UFC fighter get ripped apart in a street fight by one of these guys.
- chicken59, on 12/27/2007, -0/+7no way, seriously?
- uberism, on 12/26/2007, -8/+15LOL, spiritual amulet that gives you more power after time passes by.
- 0ceanic, on 12/26/2007, -5/+12i am not convinced that it is not choreography.
- techlyc, on 12/26/2007, -1/+8K.Fed was a kickboxer?! That explains so much...
- LeeSoong, on 12/26/2007, -2/+9It would be cooler to blindfold BOTH opponents ,
and then let them wack at each other with sticks
- my prediction is it would look like an episode of Jackass... - interrelate, on 12/26/2007, -0/+7FACT: The word, "kombotan" came from the English word "combat."
- zarcolitic, on 12/26/2007, -0/+7I'm from the Philippines and I've never heard of this. Thanks submitter. :D
- benguild, on 12/26/2007, -2/+8I closed it after he started talking about his magical amulet, and how if anybody saw it, the amulet would lose its power...Uh...Kay.
- qazwsxedc30, on 12/26/2007, -3/+9I am 100% sure it is fake
- boombye, on 12/26/2007, -0/+6You should get out more often.
- rkettner, on 12/27/2007, -1/+7Sorry to spam under the top thread... but nobody else has mentioned this yet...
Anybody notice that at the 2:15 mark... after he knocks the guy down, he looks right at the reporters face and follows if for a second or two (WITH HIS BLIND FOLD STILL ON)? Wondering how well that blindfold works... - boombye, on 12/26/2007, -0/+6Well you're pretty much right, but I don't know why you're getting dugg so I dugg you up. Apparently there's some bitter nerds on here who gawk at the idea that anyone on here would know what they're talking about when it comes to this stuff..
- inactive, on 12/27/2007, -0/+6@editorresponse & bogomill, Not to detract from the coolness of escrima/kombotan at all but Militech (one of the pioneers of UFC) is currently training special forces in Afghanistan.
- markperia, on 12/27/2007, -0/+5The amulet thing (its called "Anting-anting" in the Philippines) is pretty much *****. Its based on superstition, but I myself have one given to me by my Grandad. I just hold it as a keepsake and nothing else. I myself have studied Arnis (a faction of Kombatan) till I was 16 and the amulet never did give me any superpowers.
- Angrysock, on 12/27/2007, -0/+5You still suck just as much... I just hope you know that.
- boombye, on 12/26/2007, -0/+5I have a filipino friend or two that carry those around in their trunk, it's not a replacement for anything. Those are one of the main weapons used in Kali/Eskrima
- wisam, on 12/27/2007, -0/+5Actually, you're worse of him. In your attempt to mock him, you managed to come out with the most disgusting and disturbing comment of the day.
- TheCount, on 12/27/2007, -0/+5I'm pretty sure he breaks the combo.
- seiha, on 12/26/2007, -1/+6ORLY?
- bieber, on 12/27/2007, -4/+9WTF are you talking about? Bare-knucle, no holds barred fighting is just a sport, but dicking around while blindfolded is real combat? Straight out of bizzaro world... :/
- jonmlm, on 12/26/2007, -5/+10yea, rehearsed/practiced for about a lifetime
- crackedplastic, on 12/26/2007, -1/+5No amulet, no flavor crystals. Hey, that's life.
