story intro: http://www.forbes.com/2008/10/07/worst-losing-stre ...
---------------------
To generate our list of the worst losing streaks in sports, we looked at every team in Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League to see who had assembled the sorriest losing stretches. No soccer teams made the list, as the worst losing streak for any team is four consecutive years in the young league's history.
Los Angeles Clippers
National Basketball Association
12 consecutive losing seasons (1993 to 2005)
Staples Arena, in Los Angeles, is home to the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers. When you look into the rafters, you see countless yellow and purple Lakers banners celebrating championships and superstars like Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabar. There's almost no red and silver in the rafters.
Golden State Warriors
National Basketball Association
12 consecutive losing seasons (1994 to 2006)
Save for the Warriors die-hards, it's near impossible to name two players who suited up for the Warriors during this time span. However, a return to the run-and-gun style of Don Nelson's early '90s teams helped the longtime NBA laughingstock boost its presence.
Detroit Tigers
Major League Baseball
12 consecutive losing seasons (1994 to 2005)
For more than a decade, the Tigers were the team every club wanted to see on their schedule. In 2003, the club hit absolute rock bottom by losing 119 games, narrowly missing the all-time record for losses in a season. However, shrewd front-office moves and Sparky Anderson's managing helped reshape the club into a contender.
Milwaukee Brewers
Major League Baseball
12 consecutive losing seasons (1993 to 2004)
The Brewers were able to secure the wild card this year thanks to a bevy of young talent, which ended their playoff drought. In 2005, the club had its fist winning seasons since the early '90s. Milwaukee is one of baseball's smaller markets, putting the Brew Crew at a disadvantage when it comes to signing high-priced talent.
Chicago Blackhawks
National Hockey League
14 consecutive losing seasons (1946 to 1960)
Something that must always be considered when ranking losing aptitude is circumstance. The Chicago Blackhawks are one of the NHL's original six franchises and, for years, there simply weren't that many teams in the nation's hockey league. The team made a strong break break from its losing streak, however, by winning the Stanley Cup in 1961.
Detroit Red Wings
National Hockey League
14 consecutive losing seasons (1973 to 1987)
Detroit is known as Hockeytown, USA, for the fans' devotion to their Red Wings and the team's 11 Stanley Cups. However, in between championship runs in the 1950s and the 1990s, the team put up years of dismal performances.
Detroit-Ft. Wayne Pistons
National Basketball Association
14 consecutive losing seasons (1956 to 1970)
Yes, Ft. Wayne, Ind., is 150 miles away from Detroit, but even if you crop the losing streak to the Detroit years, it's still 13 straight seasons. Young Pistons fans who have seen the team win three world titles might not be aware of the team's former doldrums years.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
National Football League
14 consecutive losing seasons (1983 to 1996)
During the period between 1983 and 1996, the Buccaneers repeatedly put together abysmally bad seasons. They had three two-win seasons, one three-win season and one four-win season. The bright orange uniforms and the fact that they traded away future hall-of-famer Steve Young didn't help.
Philadelphia-Kansas City Athletics
Major League Baseball
15 consecutive losing seasons (1953 to 1967)
It's rare to find a team that never posted a winning record during its entire existence, but the Kansas City Athletics were that team. After losing their way out of Philadelphia, the Athletics posted losing seasons every year they were in Kansas City. Things only changed for the yellow and green once they settled in Oakland.
Vancouver Canucks
National Hockey League
15 consecutive losing seasons (1976 to 1991)
In 1994, it looked like the Canucks were going to win the Stanley Cup and turn around hockey's worst franchise. But after losing game seven to the New York Rangers, the Canucks did everything they could to resume their losing ways. Since 1994, the team has looked much more like the '76 to '91 bunch.
Sacramento Kings
National Basketball Association
15 consecutive losing seasons (1983 to 1998)
At the end of the '90s and in the early 2000s, the Kings were the second-best team in basketball behind the Los Angeles Lakers. What made this standing more impressive was the turnaround it represented from the longest stretch of losing seasons in the history of professional basketball.
Philadelphia Phillies
Major League Baseball
16 consecutive losing seasons (1933 to 1948)
The Phillies have lost more games in their history (10,098) than any team in the history of modern athletics. A significant chunk of them came during this period--which includes the Great Depression and World War II--where owner Bob Carpenter changing the club's name to the Blue Jays in an effort to make fans forget how bad the Phillies were.
Pittsburgh Pirates
Major League Baseball
16 consecutive losing seasons (1993 to present)
The Pirates used to be a powerhouse in the National League East. While they didn't win a World Series in the 1990s, they were contenders for three straight years. Pittsburgh fans still had the memories of the 1979 world championship team, but then the team got rid of Barry Bonds and started a 16-year race to rock bottom. It's the longest current losing streak in professional sports.

Freaking slide shows. - skywake, on 10/08/2008, -0/+7What does you wandering have to do with anything?
- Bwackv, on 10/08/2008, -0/+7Buried for being the worst interface on the internet. You'd think Forbes would employ subtler methods to squeeze out every last advertising dollar possible.
- freeridstylee, on 10/08/2008, -0/+5Every f----- Detroit team except the f---- lions? wtf
- Exekutor, on 10/08/2008, -1/+6***** Forbes
- malonie, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4just like the World series?
- PGPirate, on 10/08/2008, -0/+4Must stop with the ***** slideshows
- Xerone, on 10/08/2008, -0/+3My poor Pirates. *cry*
- Wreckage, on 10/08/2008, -0/+3The Detroit Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons are there...... But the Lions don't even get a honorable mention.
Worst record in the NFL since hiring Millen (now fired) 8 years ago.
Bleh - steech, on 10/08/2008, -0/+3What about the Washington Generals? They had a 2495 game losing streak!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Generals - fugularity, on 10/08/2008, -0/+3I'm gonna have to go ahead and, agree with you there.
- BadAshe86, on 10/08/2008, -0/+3The Texas Rangers with this century's version of Harry Frazee as an owner as destined to be on this list soon. With Tampa Bay possibly on its way to the Series, could Texas be the last team to have never gone to the big dance?
- Capisano, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2I feel ya.
I still go to 20+ games per year but man, it's hard to love them. - MisterEX, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2Sorry that you're forced to wander the world with your un-athletic body.
- mordeci, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2Lions were an average team in the Barry Sanders/pre-Matt Millen era. Had a winning record 5 times in the '90's. Post season is another story. They've only won 1 post-season game since 1957.
- BXRWXR, on 10/08/2008, -1/+3That's a lot of FAIL.
And by that I mean that dam slide show masquerading as a website. - mcphatty, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2I love that Detroit has three teams on this list. I was honestly suprised to not see the Lions on there. But hey, look at the Pistons and the Red Wings now!
- pennvneff, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2Notre Dame football, when the hell was the last time they won a bowl game?
- cheeseisnogood, on 10/08/2008, -0/+2I knew for sure the Rangers were going to be on here. We really suck and I don't we're ever going to the world series.
- fugularity, on 10/08/2008, -1/+2Only one player on the Knicks will be on this list?
- mraymond80, on 10/08/2008, -1/+2Kinda weird seeing the Red Wings on there being that they have won 11 Stanley Cups, the third most in the NHL...
- malonie, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1My New York Knick would be on the list in the future. I will bookmark this one so I can see the list in 15 years. Sad
- bentman78, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1They're in third right now under Manly and Melbourne.
I really hope the Storm don't win. Still 40 years in the comp and no titles is pretty bad. - Vanda, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1You know the grand final was last Sunday right, the Storm got smashed if that helps 40-0.
- hagbard69, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cronulla_Sharks
- fugularity, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Obviously you didn't even read the headline...BUT, they were not the best team in baseball, because the best team in baseball wins the world series... 116 Win Seattle Mariners anyone???
And even if you consider the team with the most REGULAR SEASON wins as the "best" the Angels were that, not the Cubs. - fugularity, on 10/08/2008, -2/+3..or maybe the rest of the world's ***** teams get away with it because nobody gives a ***** about them?
- Gustomucho, on 10/08/2008, -1/+2F Forbes
Los Angeles Clippers
Golden State Warriors
Detroit Tigers
Milwaukee Brewers
Chicago Blackhawks

Philadelphia-Kansas City Athletics
Vancouver Canucks

Pittsburgh Pirates - malonie, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1lets put an S on it, happy now?
- nofate2029, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Oh, those poor Clippers. Still, I'd give them up, and the Angels for a Football team to come back to LA.
- fugularity, on 10/08/2008, -1/+2So you're "sure" Japan could come up with a team, even though you "don't know much about baseball"?
huh??? - Vanda, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1Some of the tries in the second half were beautiful mate. Grab a copy when ever you can.
- bentman78, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1I live in the US so my news get's here slow. Also, I've been watching Guinness Premiership/Currie Cup..
I like rugby union as well.
I'll have to see that game. - dandyrubich, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1I'm very sorry to say I live in Pittsburgh and call myself a Pirates fan. I've stopped buying tickets the last two years because their just not worth it anymore. They will never compete if they don't spend money.
- pennvneff, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1You gotta ***** head coach
- Xerone, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1I don't agree that the best team in baseball is necessarily the one that wins the World Series...
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/07/07073 ... - RJLaframboise, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1Kind of funny to see the Red Wings in there considering they're the only dynasty left in the NHL.
- cyrusuncc, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Thanks for the link.. i didn't realize that the Generals actually won a game!
- geoffreyireland, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Dugg for http://images.forbes.com/media/2008/10/07/losingst ...
- metapop, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1anyone who knows EPL, just take a look at my avatar...
worst start since 1912. most american teams were in diapers in 1912. - manicleek, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1...in America
- Fleagleman, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1So kill me for being so particular, but isn't a "losing streak" a string of losses put together without a win? These teams are just bad teams, but they've all had more than just a few wins in the those timeframes.
Shouldn't this be called, "Lousiest Teams in Sporting History?" - rodeo40, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1Buried for no Cincinnati Bengals!
- cubanhawkeye, on 10/08/2008, -0/+1What about the Cubs? Seriously they haven't won a world series in a 100 years and they don't make the list....COME ON!!!
- Coreyc150, on 10/08/2008, -0/+0I was at the last pirates playoff game... I was six and I still hate the braves, big time
- fugularity, on 10/08/2008, -1/+1because there are other teams in the world who could beat the red sox?
