- newmanator77, on 07/12/2008, -1/+44I tried to ford the river and lost 300 pounds of food, 450 bullets and two family members but it was still better than paying some indian $5 to help.
- bjs3171, on 07/12/2008, -0/+36"I played the game without knowing that the Oregon Trail was actually fiction. After a college professor spent two weeks lecturing on the history and the complexities on the trail"
am i the only one confused by this? and it wasn't fiction at all. unless he thought he was controlling actual live people? - LZeppelinJ0, on 07/12/2008, -1/+23We ran out of meat and wound up having to shoot Timmy for food. Well it turns out Timmy had cholera and everyone got sick and died.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+20My wifes family was in the first group of eleven families to come to Oregon City, the famous Baker Cabin is her great, great, great grandfathers house and it still stands. The pioneer bloodline is so strong in her family they all live way too long in my opinion, but only the very strongest and healthy could survive that trip. She has incredible heritage. Myself, I'm pure mongrel with no heritage.
- billbugger, on 07/10/2008, -3/+20that website hurts my eyes.
- dipndot, on 07/12/2008, -0/+14notice how after he took the time and effort to write a long-winded, heart-felt blog about a computer game, he had to re-establish his manliness at the end by saying he went on to play many sports in high school and college. ha! he's a closet computer geek.
- MaryCait, on 07/12/2008, -1/+14The ole family ranch is right next to the Independence Rock site.
Bless you, Apple IIe, with your Oregon Trail, Odell Lake, Number Munchers, LOGO, Mad Libs, that racecar game, the one where you make paper airplanes and fly them....
Boy oh boy did I get my education!!! - Myztry, on 07/12/2008, -0/+12Well done. Although why would you attempt something that you thought was fiction...
- Jenadae, on 07/12/2008, -0/+9DOS abandon ware version of Oregon Trail :D
http://www.classic-pc-games.com/pc/educational/ore ...

http://www.dosbox.com/ - BurningSky, on 07/12/2008, -1/+9Sally got dysentery and died...
Oregon Trail ftw..:-) - CoolJammer00, on 07/12/2008, -1/+7he didn't do anything.
hard fail - str3ama, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6now I can hunt for squirrel and moose (although you can never carry all the meat) in my spare time.
- Dracominor, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6
http://www.virtualapple.org/oregontraildisk.html - rjseals, on 07/12/2008, -7/+12It pissed me off to know end only being able to carry 100 lbs of meat of a buffalo.
- rapcrap187, on 07/12/2008, -0/+4Haha classic this Oregon Trail and Number Munchers and Kings Quest 5 kept me in elementary school. We even convinced the computer teacher to let us come in before school and play the games, (since computers were just getting big most of us didnt have one yet)
What made oregon trail great

"Jed died of starvation what would you like to do"
"Give Jeb a proper burial?" O
"Throw Jeb in the river?" O
"Leave Jeb for the vultures?" X
"You killed 3500 pounds of meat, you can only carry 40 pounds" - MtheoryX, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3I miss Battle Chess.
- LacY, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3OMG, every time I mention Number Munchers, people look at me like I'm crazy. I *loved* that game. That and Oregon Trail = filler for any free time in Elementary School.
- Merlaak, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3That struck me as well. I think it was just a typo as he says it's fiction then goes on to tell us all about how it was a real trail.
- lintmonkey, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3Maybe he should've skipped the sports, and paid more attention to his English professors.
- Darrion, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3There should be a Oregon Trail: The Movie! It would be the movie based on the game based on the actual trail.
Then we can get Uwe Boll to direct, and by the way he does things he would probably have it set in Montana against Vampire Dinosuars. - TheYar, on 07/12/2008, -0/+3The original, original Oregon Trail was monochrome and you got to shoot Indians. You are for-real old school if you played that one.
- sq2shooter, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2That guys voice makes me stabby.
- str3ama, on 07/12/2008, -0/+2someone always died of dysentry. And I always got tricked eventually into viewing one of the tourist attractions with the PC Speaker music.
- island, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2You have died of Dysentery.
- wvstephens, on 07/12/2008, -1/+3haha I remember hacking the text in this game changing words like Oxen to whore and other cuss words when I was in like 5th and 6th grade.
- mwalker05, on 07/14/2008, -0/+2know it didnt
- mdoom, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Wow..when i saw this posted on digg, I wanted to actually go get my Apple ][e out of a box and play oregon trail, but heh, this'll do. :-)
- stuffradio, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Cross Country Canada ftw!
- rowjimmy, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1it's funny, there's a *****-ton of indian "porn" that isn't actually porn, but rather frames from bollywood movies where the heroine's white-robe clings a little bit showing off her bust-line.
search "hot mallu auntie" on google for laughs. - bdbr, on 07/12/2008, -1/+2Probably the "fiction" part of it is the notion of a real trail. More likely people just took the same general route (with lots of minor variations), and very little of it was distinct enough to be called a trail.
- MtheoryX, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1You know, there is a reason why Indian people are stereotyped and disliked by many people.
I suspect the reason is people like you. - Abjure, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1His voice, it reminds me of Will Farell playing Harry Caray.
http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/14862fadb0 - zephyrnug, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1i loved this game in elementary/middle school. i always died of dysentery - seems to be how it goes.
- bdbr, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I suspect that walking the trail today would involve a lot of trespassing...but I guess a few days in a Nebraska jail would make for a good story.
I did some mountain biking on the Barlow Pass. I can't believe people took wagons on that (my bike didn't make it out in one piece!). The funny thing about it is, the trail ends at a historic TOLL GATE. Yep, after walking 2,000 miles they had to pay a ***** toll! Was that in the game? (I never played it) - allothersnsused, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I'm glad I'm not the only person that noticed that.
"To be completely honest, I played the game without knowing that the Oregon Trail was actually fiction."
....riiiiight - donna1234, on 10/19/2008, -0/+1Raise your hand if Oregon Trail kept you in elementary, middle, or even high school
http://www.e-uuu.com - LacY, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1You could take the toll road or ride down the river.
- BitKid, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1Reader Rabbit FTW...oh and don't forget the superior Super Munchers.
- bitbytebit, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1that would be awesome
- chevyorange, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Oregon Fail.
- bipolarruledout, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Did gen Y ever play this? Did they even still have Apple II's? I know there have been many versions of oregon trail but crappy Apple II version I think is the one that will always be remembered when you think of the game.
- BossKey, on 07/12/2008, -0/+1I thought he meant that the depiction of the trail in the game didn't represent the real trail all that well.
- mstachiw, on 07/12/2008, -1/+1The 'Bob Ross' of Oregon Trail?
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -10/+10fat ebbsite certs fly thighs.
- Memnochxx, on 07/12/2008, -2/+2Didn't read, text was too small and eye hurty.

- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+0other people played number munchers? and odell lake? and LOGO?
all along i thought i was the only one... - nate7181, on 07/12/2008, -1/+0haha true that!
- henrymiller, on 07/12/2008, -2/+1Here's a band based entirely on that game:
http://www.myspace.com/organtrail - Trax852, on 07/12/2008, -2/+1thought I'd never say it but I want my 5 minutes back.
The intro was good, so I watched the video.
how long does one have to look at a Oregon Trail marker?
And those weren't ruts, I've heard people who have lived near the trail that say the ruts were knee high in places -
