- Pinkertinkle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10They should fish for great whites, not pansy salmon sharks.
- OutThisLife, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13Crazy white people.
- duniyadnd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Salmon sharks - more info about them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmon_shark
"Although salmon sharks are thought to be capable of injuring humans, there are few if any attacks on humans. There are, however, reports of divers encountering salmon sharks as well as salmon sharks bumping fishing vessels." - JAVandiver, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10These guys are my kind of stupid! Where can I sign up?!
- drunkmuppet, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Shark bait, hoo ah ah!
- rishdeep, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6They catch the fish and then let it go. They don't want to eat the fish, they just want to make it late for something.
- Frei, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Soon they will grow bored of this and seek bigger game. Then will have a nice story on the darwin awards to read.
- holysocks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5so hunting sharks is ok, but dolphins are a no no?
- theRealKlaatu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I have no problem with fishing for food, or catch and release, but sharks are not an "infestation." Are the oceans "fish infested?" Are the woods "bear infested?"
- Puppetfunk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This is how hunting animals should be. Instead of huge boats we fish from tiny kayaks. Instead of guns we sit up in trees and when an animal comes by we stab it with a knife. That's how a real man does it.
- poseitom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5seriously i wanna see that on tape, bro
- SeaMowse, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11Wow. My husband owns a Prowler kayak. Wait'll he sees this - he'll get a real kick out of it!
- HotWingBias, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I like how he has his feet dangling in the water.
- ryodoan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I imagine once it gets a hook in its mouth it will have no qualms against ripping that fisherman a new one.
- virtuality96, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4These guys aren't the worlds first I saw a show on Discovery were the host stayed with this tribe and they went hunting for reef sharks on wooden planks.
- Koosti, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Fishing shark the size of your boat with no safety gear. When did bungee jumping become a wussy sport?
- axis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Look up Tembin Shark Callers. That is the real shark hunters in kayaks. There was a show on the Discovery channel about a month ago with this tribe, only two of them left in the world who hunt in this fashion. It was remarkable and they do it for the right reasons, not to impress chicks.
http://www.theimajicaexperience.com/pages/tembinsh ... - NSResponder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ok, is this a hoax, or are these guys really a bunch of Darwin award applicants?
-jcr - lazyfisherman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3If you're going to kill sharks, I suppose this is how you should do it. Close-up and personal, no big boat to assist you. The sharks look pretty tough but when you read about them, they're Salmon sharks and apparently not too aggressive with humans. Let's see this with young Tiger Sharks, Makos, Hammerheads, Blue Sharks and Great Whites.
- bstolzberg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3it's all fun and games until the killer whales show up.
looks like a lot of fun! ::adds that to his dream come true list of alaskan experiences:: - scallon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4These guys spent hours out on kayaks and killed two sharks (they let the other two go) and you are worried they are hurting the shark population? Man, if all fisherman hunted the way these guys do sharks would thrive!
- ElectroOverlord, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Good one brother Bloat!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yeah definitely, what badasses.
- ookxtreme, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1well i have a kayak; however, there are no sharks in Lake Erie!! Damn... some bad wama-jammas on kayaks.....love the taste of shark....
- indicas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think you might be referring to those "shark callers." These kayaking guys don't have ***** on them, they catch sharks on home made rafts. The rafts are pretty much just a bunch of branches.
http://www.theimajicaexperience.com/pages/tembinsh ... - enginbeering, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That depends on the kind of fishing. There's nothing relaxing about reeling in a 200 lb tarpon. It sure is fun though.
- enginbeering, on 10/11/2007, -5/+6Anybody who thinks fishing is a boring sport for old men hasn't been deep sea fishing.
Or doesn't like drinking beer. - SilentSpyder, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Fishing isn't suppose to be fun it's relaxing. Reading a book isn't fun either. Maybe extroverts can't understand.
- fatlip, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7i still think the concept of fishing is kinda ***** up. offer a fish food, then kill them. i bet if someone poisoned these dudes' steaks, it would be considered "***** up"
- pp7k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually, the balls are minuscule, hence the need to go out and kill a scary-looking animal.
- koji29, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'm not sure if this should qualify as brave.. more stupid. The reason that it's not brave IMO, is because these sharks are not going to coordinate any attack against their attackers. They're quite stupid.. if someone gets nipped, it would be more of an accident than anything else.
Following that logic, I suppose it's just as brave to blindfold yourself and try to cross a busy street. Pretty thrilling, but perhaps not the kind of bravery that should be envied. - jaywon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Yes, the food chain is a horrible, horrible thing
- Nildayan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Man, seeing some of these pictures reinforce just how intimidated by sharks I am. However, I am not a big fan of sport hunting for the sake of the catch (especially if they keep it). I have a deep respect for sharks and animals in general, they just need to stay in the ocean :P
- Cwo655321, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1pics or it never happened.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're right. I fish little 1 -5lbs fish in the river.
- tmbrwolf19, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Man, Inuit hunt for bowhead whales in sealskin kayaks with wood harpoons. Thats like taking on an elephant with a sharpened twig.
- 500fthigh, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3"The sharks were concentrating on feeding on the Pink Salmon and I really don't think they gave us a second thought" - UNTIL WE KILLED THEM . I didn't hear any talk about using the shark for food/bait. Dumbass humans strike again.
- Cwo655321, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1R.I.P. Mitch.
- astrotrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The Media at it again, making these sharks sound big, fearsome, man-eaters. Daily Mail needs to investigate this a bit better. Next thing they will be doing is telling you never, ever open your email for a week due to a virus in an email is going to blow up your pc if you open it.
Anyway... these are Salmon Sharks... and only go after Salmon and Squid... they are are more of a nuisance to fisheries due to being caught with Samon / eating the "catch of the day". There have been no attacks on humans.
These sharks at this time are harmless... next Digg story please. - pp7k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Uh, no not really. Salmon sharks are no danger to humans. They do us (and the salmon) a favour by eating the sick and slower fish. The only danger here is cold water.
These guys are a bunch of pussies doing something that seems to be really macho and dangerous but isn't. I'm sure they're great kayakers, so for them this would be slightly more difficult than shooting lions at the zoo. - Darkroad, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3This is how real men fish
- xtc46, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No, we just happily sit on the top of it.
- spdowling, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1dugg up for the hedberg quote.
- andrewsavage, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Did anyone one read the comments at the end of the article? Completely ridiculous.
- astrotrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yep..more like the Lamer Awards.
- dustyshadow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well it's true that something like 10 million sharks are killed each year. Pointless killing of them isn't needed.
- maci01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Why's he getting dugg down again?
- roprot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0There are places in Australia you can catch big-ass sharks right from the shore - Steep Point in the most appropriately named "Shark Bay", for example, provides not only excellent fishing for Spanish Mackerel, but also one of the few places where I've dared not even once go in the water, having seen the BLOODY GREAT BIG SHARK just swimming around, mere meters away at the base of the deep-water cliffs.
Plus, its more fun to watch the sharks eat the mackerel before the beleaguered fisherman haul them up the cliff face .. ;) nothing quite like watching someone struggle for 45 minutes to land 'alf a fish .. - simonn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0"they do it for the right reasons"
To sell the fins to buy beer?
I grew up in PNG (New Ireland is one of PNG's islands). There is an 80's doco called "Shark Callers of Kontu" (essentially the same area) and they basically catch a shark, sell the fins to Chinese traders and buy beer. Note that the doco did not make this out to be a bad thing - it was the pre-green-revolution 80s after all. -
