- jsebrech, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3If you want to feel like a jock, become good at a sport that tickles the nerd gene. What do nerds like? We like systems of rules that produce non-obvious conclusions, so we can feel we've achieved something by fully understanding the consequences of the rules. We also like jargon, code language, the stuff only the people in the know actually can understand. Finally, we like sequences and order, especially to understand and memorize, because our minds have an intrinsic need to see the deeper pattern to things.
For me, this turned out to be karate. It satisfies all of my nerd cravings. But it can be any sport. But I also play football, basketball, and baseball on my high school teams and play golf most weekends, so I'm also a bit of a jock. I'm not sure I could choose between the two if I had to.
